View Full Version : When & How did you discover Moonlighting?

I was curious with all the younger fans over here, when and how did you discover Moonlighting? I am an original fan who tuned in the first night that The Pilot aired as had seen ads for Cybill Shepherd's new series and I was intrigued. It hooked me in right from the start. I became a regular viewer back then, never missed an episode unless it was an absolute emergency and even bought my first VCR to start taping the episodes so I could watch them again and again.

So tell us, when did you first start watching ML?

Hey Cindy!!

I think I alredy said this somewhere, but I don't remember. Well, I used to watch the show when I was a kid. Maybe I was 9 or 10 years old, and now it's pretty obvious to me that it was alredy a rerun in my country.

Well, now I'm almost 22. And what I remembered about this show, was that I loved it because of Maddie's and Dave's disscusions, because of the "scene chases", and all that. I rememberd I used to laugh a lot with the show. But of course, having that little age... I didn't remember any of the episodes. I had a general idea. But no specific episodes in my mind.

So I was thinking about this show, mmm like 3 or 4 months ago, rememeberinh how much I used to like it when I was a kid, so I looked it up in the emule, and I found a lot of episodes available so I download them!! And... I got HOOKED!!!!!!! Oh, my god, that was pure magic!!!!! I become an obssesed ML fan.

So now I keep trying to download more eps (my mom is sick and tired of me, cause the pc is in her room, and she has to sleep with all the noise, as I always leave the pc on, hehehehe. But hey! She also loves ML) I have like 30 or more eps, but I want them all!!!!!

Well, basically, this is my story, hehehe. Kisses to all!!

Cindy! You're alive! :woohoo:

Okay...now for my story which I'm sure I've told a zillion times. :D

I think it was about three years ago, and my mom just happened to flick on "Between a Yuk and a Hard Place" on Bravo. She was going on and on about how great the show was and how I would just love it. So (to humor her ;)), I sat down and watched it. I immediately adored it and absolutely fell in love with Davey. :biglove:

After that, I started tuning in every day, routinely setting my VCR each morning before school. About a year later, ML was taken off Bravo, and I was stuck with one episode, "And the Flesh was Made Word," which I still play every once in a while, just for old time's sake.

THE END. :smurf:

I can't remember how old I was but I know that I was young though when I saw it. I can't even remember if I watched the Pilot either. I just don't remember what season I got into first. I bet ya'll can tell that I have not seen this in a long time. One reason is it never came on for repeats here. But I would be happy to see this show again though.

Oh my god, the pressure...my first posting on this site. I can't take it...
Moi? I got into Moonlighting way back when it started. Growing up in Sydney I drove my friends and family crazy trying to be David Addison . Never missed an ep. Never. I think 'cause it was on during my mid teens it was an important show for me and gave me a kind of confidence. Love/d it!!Never pressure

This is a great topic. My answer will probably surprise a couple of ML fans. First of all, I have been a Cybill fan since the late 60's -- no surprise. BUT I was not a Moonlighting fan from the beginning. I remember seeing the pilot and I loved it. I watched it because Cybill was going to be in it. I was pregnant at the time. I gave birth to my first child in the early spring of '85 and my life has not been the same since. She was born mentally and physically handicapped, so for the first year of her life, I basically had no life. Because of all the stress, my body simply gave up and I developed Graves Disease of the thyroid. SO 1985 and the first half of 1986 was a nightmare (and a blur) for me. I was sick, in shock, and stressed out -- BUT then, one Tuesday night, I had the time and energy (after having my thyroid removed) to watch the greatest show ever -- Moonlighting!!!!!!!!!!! I had never seen such chemistry on the television screen (or the Big Screen). I don't even remember which episode it was. All I knew was that I couldn't get enough of the show. I actually would count the days until the next Tuesday so I could watch my most favorite show ever. :happyface So,19/ 20 years later, I am still a huge Moonlighting fan. My tapes are in such terrible shape that the thought of having them on DVDs makes me a happy camper. The tracking system on my VCR from the 80's stunk big time so basically I can only hear most of them.

Sorry if I bored anyone.

Hey, Kolchak! Welcome to SO and the Moonlighting board! My name's Lauren.

This board is usually way more active than it is now, but one of our favorite members is on a week-long vacation. :( It'll get more lively once she gets back.

Hope you stick around!

Bore anyone??
Ofcourse not!
Heck of a story Kis, but there's always hope and ........ Moonlighting!!
I have the same feelings about the show as you have!
This show can make u happy when you're totally depressed!!
It always worked for me! And I still wonder how it can be that two total strangers, a man and a woman that you don't even know, can make your life so much happier!
It's obvious how well these two do their jobs!
I've seen Bruce live once and now it's time to go and see Cyb in the flesh!
Just want ONE chance to say how much I like to see her on the screen and maybe even more in real life!
Started watching the show in '86 when it aired in Holland for the first time, was obsessed then and still am.
Think it will never change.
It's an addiction.

thanks guys.
there is just a lot of stuff being talked about that i have no knowledge about, like somebody's website, fan fiction, and all that. and please beleive me, i go to 6-8 message boards everyday and really don't look at the actual websites. i am on the boards so much. so i don't really want to add to the list. that plus writing for another.
so i just come around here and the other numerous forums on this site. not everyday, as traffic is slow at the other forums. but i do look elsewhere. but i do come to this ML one everyday.
as for starting threads, i usually add to what others start. i do sometimes, but it is not often.
i'm glad to see this thing has taken off. and with so many international posters too. that is great.

I almost forgot I was Dutchie over here haha:lol:

Okay, here is the answer to the question: When & How did you discover Moonlighting?

Well, first of all, I was addicted to the show Mad About You with Helen Hunt. There was one episode with Bruce in it. He had an accident while filming a new movie so he was in the hospital.
I didn't know him back then (you're probably thinking: HOW IS THAT POSSIBLE!?!?). My mom was also watching that episode and she said: Hey, that's really Bruce Willis!

That was the first time I heard his name and saw his face:rolleyes: After a while, Mad About You stopped airing(I even cried about that:crazy: ) A few weeks (maybe months) later I was very bored and started watching tv. Suddenly I saw a man on the screen, together with a woman. It where Bruce and Cybill!

I started watching it because of Bruce, but I recognised Cybill her face as well (I think from the movie called While Justice Sleeps).
It was the episode called "Lady in the Iron Mask" and the scene was on the roof of that hotel when they find out the woman is really a man. I thought that scene was so romantic. I thought it was a movie so I started to look in the tv-guide and saw it was called Moonlighting AND that there was another episode the next day.

When I saw a few episodes of the show, I never wanted to miss it again. I started to look for information about the show and that is how I arrived at davidandmaddie.com and later at BW.com and Cybill.com and here hehe (I'm a busy girl hehe)

Later, Veronica (the one who aired it) was going to stop airing. So the last wekk they showed Moonlighting every day! I didn't notice it at first and when I found out, the first episode I saw was Lady in the Iron Mask AGAIN lol, that was fun! :D

so, that's my story

greets Steph

Yippee!! I am so glad I started this thread because we have learned so many interesting and wonderful things about people and their own personal ML stories. I love the mix here of original airing fans and recent converts....and of the U.S. fans and the International fans...how some of our experiences concerning discovering ML are different since those of us in the U.S. were exposed to so much more of the media frenzy about the show and all the delays and reruns while waiting for new episodes.

Ok I'm not a young fan anymore but I was when I started watching!
I think I told my story before but I will do it for the last time because this thread is especially for this topic.
I started to watch the show in ' 86 or '87 when it first aired in Holland.
The first episode made me really laugh out loud so I liked it immediately.
But I wasn't hooked yet, that was later on when they got closer and closer. (after 6 or 7 episodes)
I had a girlfriend who was addicted also and together we used to play scenes from the show. Bought the same sunglasses that B and C had on the show and made photo/scrapbooks ( I bought every magazine with B or C in it) which I still have.
I even styled my hair the same as Maddie (well at least I tried!)
Every week after watching the show we called eachother analyzing the whole epi, giggling and quoting them. This was real romance!
I didn't have a VCR yet so I taped some of the epi's on cassettes!Just so I could hear their voices.
I saw all of the episodes and I started taping every episode on my VCR later on in the nineties when we had reruns in Holland.
Now I have all the epi's on tape except for 3 or 4.
Can't wait for the dvd's!
I had the luck to see Bruce in real life in Amsterdam in '92 and now 12 years later I finally get the chance to see Cyb in London in real life too!
That means sooo much to me!
I wasn't a very active fan anymore the last 10 years but now with the Internet I fell in love with ML all over again and it feels the same like when I was 15!! I got all my tapes from the attic and I am watching them over and over again now.
Love these two! They're beautiful in every way!

i started watching moonlighting during the last bravo run.
i had inherited this house that was completely filled with decades worth of junk and had hired this 'illegal' who had just crossed the border from mexico a couple of days before. he was helping me empty out the house.
when i took a break the first day moonlighting was on and it was during a take a left at the alter episode. i did not like it, but the man helping me was a true moonlighting fan. he said if i could get threw the (his words) crumy 4th and 5th seasons-iwould see a true gem)
he also insisted that i tape the show.
well, we would watch it everyday, threw seasons 4 and 5 and then season 1 and part of 2 (i said this house was filled!) and i loved it from season one and will be forever grateful to him. and i have all the episodes on tape!

hmm... i dont precisely remembere when i discovered Moonlighting... it was aired when i was a kid and my sister (who has 4 years more than me) was a real fan, she would watch it every week...

so sometimes i would watch it with her... it was a long time ago and i dont remember a lot of episodes

but then it stopped and when they did re-runs it was always at night. like this summer, they made reruns of the first season but it was after midnight !!! i tried to follow but my vcr doesnt work and i am a big sleeper :p

in fact, if now i want to rediscover that series it is because thru the years i grew a big Bruce fan and i heard so much on ML, i am getting curious

I've only just seen this thread, and thought I'd add my story...

When Moonlighting first aired in the UK in about 1986, my sister (who's 5 years older than me) used to watch it every single week without fail. I didn't notice it at first much, but as it got into the third season I started to really fall for David Addison and ended up shouting at the TV to convince them to admit they loved each other!! :D

By the time 'I am curious...Maddie' aired, I was addicted. Like lots of people, I hadn't seen a lot of the epi's for years, but last year got addicted all over again. It's great as there are lots of epi's that I never saw, especially in series 1 and 2.

I credit watching Moonlighting with not only introducing me to Bruce and Cybill's wonderful talents, but also to my love of Motown and soul and introducing me to the music of Billie Holliday as well!!! :happyface

Hurrah for Moonlighting!!!

Basically I was off school sick one day and i just flicked through the channels then I saw David Addison ... ;-) Its kind of annoying though because it starts at three everyday and i get home from school about half past, so i only get half an hour a day. Still better than nothing! xxxxxxxxxx

Mul - I really got into mowtown and Jazz (especially Billie Holliday and Ella Fitzgerald) through ML too!

And Chelsea - my ML story is virtually the same as yours - I got a freeview box and was flicking through during half term. And the first episode I saw was Atomic Shakespeare too. I wonder if we were got hooked at the same time!!

Yes, Leanne, you can record freeview! You just have to make sure that your video is on the right channel (mine is the video channel) and that your freeview box is set on abc1. I've often gone out for work and forgotten to change the channel back to abc1 after watching something on another channel the night before.

... and that your video is technologically capable. My video refuses to recognise the scart connections from either the TV or the Telewest box so I can only record channels 1 to 5 :(

But I am not too sad as I still get to watch Moonlighting every Sunday afternoon.

I also realise that I have never answered this question. I saw some of the later episodes of Moonlighting as a teenager. I watched in my bedroom on a tiny black and white TV when I was supposed to be doing homework :D

Then I forgot all about the show until last year when I spotted the box set of videos in a shop and decided to treat myself. That lead to discovering the online Moonlighting community and then abc1. I am even more hooked now than I was first time round

That's a pain Tamm, that you can't hook up your video to record on freeview. I managed it by fluke, I think. I have so many wires and scarts back there, I have no idea what's going where, but I dare not touch anything as I have no idea where to put things back. If it ain't broke...

That's just sooo cool Gem! Now everytime I hear songs like "Stormy Weather" or some of the soul stuff by the Temptations etc, it makes me think of Moonlighting. And I can never listen to the Ronettes' Be My Baby without hearing heavy breathing in the background!! :o

There are quite a few songs from Moonlighting that I personally associate only with Moonlighting. Some of them are:

Respect
Stormy Weather
When A Man Loves A Woman
Blue Moon
Good Lovin'
Be My Baby
I Told You I Love You...

Any Motown song reminds me of ML.
Especially Smokey and Aretha...oh and the Temptations...

Thank goodness they were able to get all the song rights for the DVD release. It would haven't have been the same without the music. I ordered my dvd's this morning. I was feeling a bit down as I had to say goodbye to my form class yesterday because it was their last day before they leave school to sit their exams, so that cheered me up a treat! I can't wait for it to arrive now!

I believe I watched it the first day it aired on RTL Plus in the late 80s. I was a teenager at that time. I even remember staying up all night to watch a Moonlighting marathon and I had never done that for any other show. I just remember me sitting in the bed, my mom knocking on the door saying 'what you are still up..get some sleep you're supposed to go to school in less than two hours", I believe it was a Saturday morning and I couldn't sleep I wanted to watch the big bang scene but when it was over, I had a smile on my face and fell asleep...

I remember one Tues. night my aunt was visiting(always thought she was so cool growing up) and she had us turn the channel to ABC so she could watch Moonlighting. It was not on that night and she screamed, was soo upset it was not on. I thought wow it must be a great show. I don't think I had even heard of the show at that time but I watched it the next Tues. night and was hooked from then on. Think I was about 11 at the time.

I was a fan from the beginning in 1985. I was fifteen and in high school and i just loved Bruce from the beginning and I've loved him ever since and i just love Cybill to( but in a different way LOL) I had pics n my locker and collected pics of them from the tv guide and magazines. Still have some and i've been adding to my collection again. I think the chemistry is what drew me in. I've always been such a hopeless romantic since this show. No other couple in tv comes close to them or tv show for that matter(Buffy and Angel are second and third is Ross and Rachel for me). I believe that Bruce and Cybill had the amazing chemistry and thats what made David and Maddie's chemistry. This show always made me feel better and still does(until the last season i guess :)

Hi Guys,

Just wanted to introduce myself...My name is Kara and I'm from Long Island. I've been a Moonlighting fanatic since 1985. I started watching with my mom when I was kid and just fell in love with the characters. I still compare every tv/movie couple to Maddie and David, and no one has ever come close. Anyway, I just wanted to say hi and to tell you how much I am enjoying these discussions.

i can't remember my very first show, but my first show on tape is Bride of Tupperman, which still holds a fond place for that reason.

i date back (i think, based on what i remember seeing) that middle area between first and second season -- b/c i clearly remembered seeing most of the first season, and all of second, but not the pilot -- that was new for me when i bought the first video release of it in like 86 (which was my first vcr tape purchase along with the movie clue -- in my young pre-teen years i was apparently obsessed with detectives).

I had the clipping book (largely pirated from back issues at the local library. i know, that's not quite legal, but was a teen obsessed), and the big bruce poster on the blue background. while most of my friends where bonkers over kirk cameron (which i never got) bruno was my boy. i even saw blind date and hudson hawk on opening day. cybill, too, was a fav, and i saw chances are on opening day.

Have all eps on tape, even the dreadfully spinal tap return of bruno show from hbo, and still know way too much of the dialogue by heart. there should be new more productive stuff in my brain, but no. it's ms. depesto poetry and fragment GCC dialog. However, makes me seem REALLY witty at parties!

I even had named a wild lizard on the front porch "ms. depesto" so i could yell to it as i walked in the door "ms. dee-pest-toooooe!"

yes, sad state, but remember i was 12. :)

Oh I think I know the poster with the blue background you are talking about. I had it too and that was the picture I used to draw my own Bruce poster with a pencil and a piece of paper...I'm a very bad artist, trust me, but that was the only picture I remember I showed to my parents and they said, well, my mom did, hey that's Bruce Willis the guy from "Moonlighting", I think I did a good job..

Hi all,

I still have that Bruce poster :) My friend got it for mr for my tenth birthday. I can't believe I still have it, but it's in pretty good shape. Caitybelle, I just wanted to say I saw Chances are when it came out too. I think I dragged my friends more than once. I was 12! And I have Blind Date on VHS. The 80's ruled, and I tend to block out the 90's :)

And yes, sticking random Moonlighting dialogue does go over well.

P.S. Yeah, what was it w/ Kirk Cameron? All my friends loved him too. Didn't get it... Bruce all the way!

I'm pretty sure my blue bruce is still floating around too -- along with a giant blind date poster (the one with the potato chip stuck to his forehead).

Ok, here's one. On the night they played "I am curious" I actually had my knock off dave raybans (the ones with the silver nose piece) and a pom pom so that i could (wait for it) cheer for david. We'll set aside the fact that today i am absolutely mad for mark harmon, and just appreciate that I was seriously against seeing him continue on moonlighting by that point. Ya'll remember how many damned eps we had to wait? It was like MONTHS. crazy. hence the deviant pom pom behavior.

Ah sweet youth. I did however find subsequent obsessions in Next Gen, X-Files, and Jag. However, none with the surefire obsessive bravado that moonlighting had for me. I can't remember too much dialogue from any of those, but moonlighting, oh yeah sir i do say i did say.

V. V. Handy at parties, indeed.

Now that you mention it, I loved the 80s but hated the 90s up, 2005 is the first year that seems to prove to be a wonderful and most of all successful year. The music was great, we had wonderful TV shows and movies at that time, Atari, not too many computers were around so we had our games we played in the backyard ;) like throwing record chips to the wall, collecting stickers and things from bottles and sticking them on posters, playing cards...trying to fight the 'big, curly hair' , shoulder pads...

I totally agree...kids don't have any real imagination anymore. We had to make up games and it was fun. Now they just stare at a screen with those video games and that's it. And yes, the 21st century is turning out to be a lot better than the final years of the 20th.

hi its laura a again
well im one of the originals fans from way back in 1985 when it first aired.
i was thirteen at the time and bruce was my first real crush and still is 20 years later even though im a married woman with three kids sad ha ! ,i was just transfixed by them both and had never seen anything like it before on tv. I would tune in every week but because in the UK they aired after the US all the story lines were leaked out so we knew what was going to happen. Correct me if iam wrong ,its been a while but i think they were shown on the following monday in the UK,anyway all you would hear about in school the next morning after each episode was "did you see moonlighting " and how gorgeous they both were.
The morning after Im curious maddie we had a group class discussion on whether they should have slept together and where the relationship could go from there,we all knew that cybill was pregnant so we were curious on how the writers were going to deal with that ,anyway we all had great fun discussing it as well as us girls swooning over bruce and how sexy he looked in that episode ( well actually every episode ) .
Sorry i must be going on a bit! Ive just bought the dvds of seasons 1 & 2 and i think they are FANTASTIC !i have probably watched every episode at least three times( well maybe not the Gillain one - Knowing Her-) .Even now watching the sexual chemistry between bruce and cybil gives me butterflies in my stomach. What an apthrodisiac!!
When ever i want to spice things up in the bedroom with hubby and me i just watch Im curious.... and To heiress.... wow hot stuff !!
Well thats my story how and when i discovered Dirty Dave and the Big Blonde ,,bye for now

I just read this thread and noticed that many of us were preteens when Moonlighting came out. None of my friends watched moonlighting, and they thought Bruce was ANCIENT. I was laughing so hard reading Caitybelle's posts...I love the fact that she put on her faux raybans and got out her pompom to cheer for David!

I was in jr. high and EVERY tuesday my best friend would call right after the show started just so she could hear me freak out about how I COULD NOT TALK! (Being twelve, the idea of NOT answering the phone just wasn't an option, apparently...)

I used to sit about three feet from the tv, so as not to miss a single detail and I would SCREAM at the TV. It wasn't a tv show...it was an EVENT. I too had the blue Bruce poster, in fact, I had an entire Bruce wall. I forced my friend to memorize the whole "yay I say, but why do you bray..." speech so that I could do Bruce's part. And my little brother still can say the "man with a mole on his nose" rhyme. Poor guy!

I don't even want to guess how many times I slow forwarded the kissing scenes in order to dissect every hidden nuance...

My dad worked for a radio station and actually got tickets for Bruce's concert (I think I was 14 by this time) and for a few, blissful hours I thought I was going. Then my parents realized it was 18 and over only, and no amount of tears, hysterics, or door slamming (thanks moonlighting) would persuade them that I could get in. So I didn't get to go. For months, I was inconsolable, convinced that they had ruined my chance to meet and marry Bruce Willis.

Ah, to be 12 again!!

Its funny how so many of us were 12 or 13 when we first saw ML and virtually all of us had major crushes on Bruce!! I think he was my first serious crush, so much so that for several years, I wondered why all the boys at school couldn't have the same wonderful smirk and those eyes!!!

Actually to this day, Bruce as he looked in about 1986-87 is still pretty much an ideal for me, watching ML as a teenager was obviously influential on my tastes!! Though I gotta say, I don't meet any men who look quite like that...darn..

I'm the same age as Bruce so I definitely wasn't a teenager when ML aired.

I did not have a crush on Bruce per se - I guess had a crush on Bruce and Cybill together (and still do to this day). I found them so attractive together as a couple. They were at ease with each other from the first seconds on screen. You could feel the SIZZLE when they first looked at each other. It's as if they were made to be together. I always found it interesting that throughout Moonlighting, they were joined together - when they walked, shoulders and arms were usually touching, even in season 5. You don't see that on other TV shows. I also loved the way Bruce would touch the small of her back when walking or standing.

I do try to see everything each one of them acts in, but the truth is nothing holds a candle to Moonlighting. To this day, if they get too close to another actor/actress on screen, it feels like they are cheating on each other to me. Someone, please get my meds.

I know what you mean Kismet, even tho I love watching Bruce and Cybill in other films/TV, ML was the best!

I loved what you said about them being joined at the hip - I always loved the way that they held hands when they were running after the criminal, and the way Bruce touched Cyb's back or she touched his arm. It just looked so warm and affectionate... :D

I've never seen such wonderful chemistry between two actors as I saw with those two, it was special.

I watched every episode from the pilot down to maybe the last four or so in Yr. 5. I remember being psyched up about it from the very beginning, reading previews, calling my friends, and we all loved it from pretty much the word go.
