View Full Version : Songs about drugs?
Janice 08-01-2004, 12:12 AM Some have hidden messages. I've heard that 'Puff The Magic Dragon' is about marijuana.
Ditto for 'Along Comes Mary' (MaryJane) by the Association.
Neil Young's, 'The Needle and the Damage Done', is about the devastation of heroin addiction.

Dr. Jazz 08-01-2004, 12:23 AM That Smell by Lynyrd Skynyrd
and of course Cocaine by Eric Clapton comes to mind. Not to be too political here, but after seeing Fahrenheit 9/11, every time I hear "Cocaine" on the radio I can't keep from laughin'. Those of you who've seen it know what I'm talking about.

david&maddie4ever 08-01-2004, 05:23 PM Not that any of you care about anything country, but Faith Hill's "If You're Gonna Fly Away," written by Pink, is about drugs. Of course, this is country, so the song's just about someone else (a friend or boyfriend, I assume) thinking about using drugs...nothing terrible. :p
The Modfather 08-01-2004, 06:14 PM To Be Young (Is to be Sad, Is to Be High)- Ryan Adams
Steve M. 08-01-2004, 10:55 PM All of these songs are from Family:
"Second Generation Woman" ("Smokes like a man, getting higher than I can. . . .)
"How-Hi-the-Li"
"Face In the Cloud"
All of them were written by original Family bassist Rick Grech, who got so stoned so often, it led to the liver and kidney complications that killed him at 43 years of age in 1990 - long after he quit both drugs and the music business! :(

ABlairican Pie 08-03-2004, 08:00 AM "Rainy Day Women #12 and #35" by Bob Dylan is considered a drug song because it contains lines about "Everybody must get stoned"--but in actuality the "stoned" he's talking about is stoning as a way of putting someone to death. "But I would not feel so all alone....Everybody must get stoned!"
Maybe he's commenting on his role as a social critic and how people didn't like it...and wanted to punish him?

Steve M. 08-03-2004, 10:25 PM Let's all get one thing straight, before someone else suggests otherwise - in spite of Paul McCartney's recent comments, "Lucy In the Sky With Diamonds" was not about LSD - it was about four-year-old Julian Lennon's nursery school drawing, and the other lyrics were inspired by Alice In Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass!
