View Full Version : Yet Another Cadillac For Me!

Since there are not many car-related threads here (maybe because a lot of S.O. members are too young to drive), I thought I would post a few photos of another Cadillac I recently bought.

I went for a bike ride a few weeks ago and instead of biking to the usual places I go to, I went a different direction (east into Granada Hills). I passed by an auto shop and in the parking lot was a 1970 Cadillac Sedan de Ville. The shop was closed so I had to wait until later to talk to the owner. To save time, I'll skip the minor details. Car has 88,000 miles, new paint, seats and carpet. It looked so good and drove so nice, I couldn't pass it up. The owner was asking $3,000, but he accepted a few hundred dollars less because the license plate sticker had been expired for a few years. This car will replace my '71 Cadillac Fleetwood Brougham (I'll still keep the '76 limousine). It's a California car, originally sold in Santa Clara. It's the 26,016th of 72,958 Sedan de Villes built for 1970; build date is the second week of Nov., 1969.

Anyway, here are some pics:
(Top photo- '76 limo and '70 SDV in driveway.)
(Bottom photo- '71 Fleetwood, '70 SDV in street, '76 limo in driveway.)

That's true... especially '60s and '70s (and '50s) Cadillacs.
Luckily, out here, there are quite a few car shows- a great way to see classic cars.

"I bought you a Cadillac....twice!"

My Grandpa had a '93 Cadillac (before he died) and my Dad and Uncles both thought it was the greatest thing ever, but I never liked it.

I dont think most young people these days like Caddys

I have a '96 Intrepid btw, I prefer newer sedans

'70 would be fine. Perfect for riding on a sunny day with The Beach Boys blaring out of the speakers.

Yeah, but this Caddy has triple the trunk room (20 cu. ft.). And has triple the steel of an Eclipse. (Remember, too, my job is only 4.5 miles away, so mileage is not a concern for me.)

True, but a '96 DeVille weighs at least 800 lbs less. And a '70 has highway (2.94:1) gears. Can do at least 85 mph. in second gear (but I won't try that!). One magazine got a '64 Coupe de Ville up to 97 mph. in 2nd gear!

Make up your mind... do you want a Caddy or a "little deuce coupe?"

I wouldn't try that, there's no way that could be very healthy for the engine. Be like 10,000 RPMs or something!

It looks like the only new Cadillacs the young people today like would be the Escalade.

Wait a minute... I found the magazine. It was a '68 CDV, not a '64 (I'm getting my info mixed up)
Tested by a foreign magazine ("Autocar," 8-15-68)

'68 CDV, with 472 engine, 2.94 rear axle ratio, weighing 4,952 lbs.

Max speeds:
1st........ 60 mph. @ 5,200 rpm
2nd....... 97 mph. @ 5,000 rpm
3rd........ 120 mph @ 4,200 rpm
(The 472 Cadillac engine is redlined at 5,200 rpm.)
You're right, though, no way would I take the engine up to those high rpm's!

The '64 I mentioned, tested by the same magazine, did:
1st.......... 55 mph.
2nd......... 90 mph.
3rd.......... 123 mph.

Congratulations Fleet! The car is mint. It's a stunning looking vehicle. Of course, you may need to moonlight to pay for the gas. ;)

Cool Fleet! It would be extremely hard to get used to driving such a big car again! But I love classic cars! They had personality! Not like the cookie cutters that are out there today!:D That's why I prefer pick-up trucks! It has some metal around it!

Nice cars- it's a shame that you don't see many Caddys around anymore.

It's always fun when you just come across THE car (my dad and I once bought a '41 Willys truck- while 500 miles from home on vacation...that became an adventure and a half).

Thanks, Janice.

Hopefully the gas bill won't be high because I will only put about 4,000 miles/year on it.

I've seen some tests of modern big trucks whose fuel mileage is only in the 10 mpg. bracket. Some of those big SUVs also get only 10-13 mpg.

My mom used to laugh at what some people said when she pulled into a parking lot with her '70 Coupe de Ville and '71 Fleetwood Brougham. The most often-asked question was "How do you drive such a big car?" She usually said, "It almost drives itself." I like what one man said... "Don't tell me you are going to back that big car out of that parking space." My mom responded with "Just watch me." So, she backs up and pulls away and sees the man just standing there shaking his head!

Actually, some of the big cars (like pre-'74 Cadillacs) had "peaked" front and rear fenders... you could see where the car ends, so it's much easier parking it. But, it does take getting used to if changing from a compact to a full-sized car!

Yeah, me too. Only classic cars for me. Today's autos look the same. If you took off all the emblems and nameplates of a modern Toyota, Nissan and Lexus, who could tell which is which?
But take them off a '70 (or '60) Cadillac, Lincoln and Imperial, and they are still easy to identify.

Yes, the big trucks do have a safety factor- more metal and weight.

Yeah, it would be nice to see more classic cars driving around.

A '41 Willys truck? Now that's something you don't see much anymore. That would be a crowd-gatherer at the weekly Friday night car show I go to.

I can't get the song Pink Cadillac out of my head, lol. Any other Cadillac songs? I know there was a 50s group, The Cadillacs.

I'm rambling. File this under:

You are very close... the pics were taken in Granada Hills, which is not far from Sylmar- about 5 miles. You probably recognize the mountains in the background, which can be seen all over the valley.

Oh, yes. There have been a lot of songs with the car "Cadillac" in the lyrics.
On a mailing list (CML; Cadillac Mailing List), someone posted a list of songs mentioning Cadillac- well over 50 songs.
