well, they've only really had one big single (they've had some rock-only hits, but The Reason was the only major crossover hit), so I wouldn't quite consider them overrated the same way someone like Britney, Justin or Usher is
Jrnygrl 07-27-2004, 11:37 PM Okay I know I am going go get bashed for this, but Michael Bolton has to be the most overrated solo singer ever. This man sounds like he is gargling glass when he tries to hit the high notes.  :barf: omg: ohno:

diezman 07-28-2004, 02:48 PM Nickelback - They sound just like most other posers in the same genre. I'm glad I don't hear these clowns on the radio much anymore
The White Stripes - I can't understand what all the fuss is about. I guess if THE GOSPEL OF ROLLING STONE says someone is good then people will flock to the stores. Jack is a very good guitarist but Meg needs to find another day job. She's no drummer - sorry
Dave Matthews Band - Sure, good music if Dave would just shut up and let someone else sing
Dixie Chicks - no doubt these ladies have tremendous talent. Natalie's voice makes me want to stick my thumb in my eye however
Oh well, enough hatred for today- it's really not my nature
Superstar 07-28-2004, 02:54 PM Usher-him and JT are hust trying to be Michael Jackson
¤I Love Clay Aiken¤ 07-28-2004, 03:49 PM Dave Matthews Band
Usher
Eminem

OMG I totally forgot about DMB. I don't understand why people love them so much..
Dean Winchester 07-28-2004, 06:43 PM Usher - he had some good songs in the past, but nothing he's done this year merit's his superstar status, and IMO he does not have the artistic worth yet to bash Madonna. Give me her worst album over Burn and Confessions
Norah Jones - he album was pretty cool the first time, something a little different, but now that genre's been maxxed out
Clay Aiken - I don't get the hype. If he's your idea of rockin, check out Barry Manilow and Michael Bolton
Avril Lavigne - she's not bad for pop, but people need to stop calling her a rock artist
Jessica Simpson - started out being a bad Mariah wannabe, but got worse once the dumb tv show hit... and now she's doing really bad remakes all the time. It's sad that Robbie's Angels couldn't make it here... yet Jessica's version is a smash.
Puff Daddy/P. Diddy/Puffy Combs whatever - singlehandedly responsible for destroying the MTV empire in 1997. Once he took off, MTV moved to Times Square, stopped playing music-related programming, and has decayed into the garbage it is now. Plus, he stole so many superior songs to do for himself.
Dave Matthews - just not that damn good. Who needs 10 different live albums of his? I find it funny he's still huge while Hootie & The Blowfish are all hasbeens now.
Michael Jackson - I know... what!?!?! He WAS good, but two great albums over 20 years ago doesn't quite merit the God-like treatment he gets from todays 20-something r&b and pop stars. For two great (Thriller and Off The Wall) and one OKAY (Bad) album, he's had so much crap in the years since. Everyone wants to be him... if Justin and Usher aspired to be Prince instead, I bet their music would be better. Plus, considering the stuff from the past year, why would anyone still wanna be just like him?
Hilary Duff - proof that exposure to 12 year olds and a good publicity team can make ANYONE popular.
Britney - she has her share of catchy songs, but all in all, she is a hack, and she really shouldn't still be around (the expiration date for a 16 year old pop vocalist generally is usually 2 years).
¤I Love Clay Aiken¤ 07-28-2004, 06:49 PM Buffy reminded me: Norah Jones. When an artist is overplayed or praised so much, it makes me turn against them. They do that with shows too, which is why I never watched Friends- when it gets so overexposed and stuff, it just totally turns me off.
Nighthawk76 07-28-2004, 07:24 PM Creed: the lead singer wanted to be Jim Morrison really bad, but was certainly no Morrison. The band themselves were a cheap rip off of Led Zeppelin.
Dave Matthews Band: I can't stand his voice.
Hootie and the Blowfish: I was one of the few who never jumped on this band wagon back during 1995-1996.
Dannii Minogue: has only about a quarter of the talent of her more famous sister. All her songs sound the same, IMO.
Billy Joel: As I posted on the Billy Joel thread, this guy is a poor man's Elton John.
Justin Timberlake: many people talk about how he has grown as an artist, but his music is still pure bubblegum pop.
9121522516113 07-28-2004, 07:44 PM Um... I dunno, I listen to everything. But I'd have to say that Dashboard Confessional is overrated. but I do listen to them... i just don't think that they're as good as people say they are.
SBTB Geek 07-29-2004, 02:35 AM Janet Jackson- I never found her worthy of her "icon" status.
Mijada 07-29-2004, 06:38 PM Nirvana. I like them but I do think they are overated.

She's not a ****ing Britney Spears "I'm a SLAVE 4 U" "HIT ME BABY ONE MORE TIME".
Why don't you try listening to her CD's and not her singles. Shes rock, damnit.

I have, it's a nice catchy pop song. I've heard REAL "women who rock", Avril is a pop singer in comparison. Not a bad pop singer, but one nonetheless.
Some people think pop ONLY means Britney and Christina... there's more types of pop music than that. Good Charlotte are very much a pop band as well. Avril and Good Charlotte sing power-pop music... NOT rock.

exactly, if Radio Disney plays it... it's NOT rock.
¤I Love Clay Aiken¤ 07-30-2004, 03:22 PM I dont think J.Lo is overrated, I just think shes over exposed.
TheGreatPretender 07-30-2004, 06:42 PM Beyonce Knowles.
Pretty much all of what's popular today.
Kristina 07-30-2004, 07:09 PM Originally posted by Avril's Sk8er Boi
listen to Sk8er Boi well, that's not one of her harder songs but compared to REAL pop acts... it is hard rock. Losing Grip, Unwanted, Forgotten, Nobody's Home, Take Me Away, Together... well, actually her second album is a lot harder than her first, there's a lot of different styles in it. Let Go was mostly pretty poppy, Avril has said so herself. But she's definitely not like Britney Spears, she's a rocker. I don't like when people act like (BuffySlayer, for example) she is some kind of fake teenybopper trash, it's just not true.
And BuffySlayer must base things on image, even if her image was "fake" he admits to liking her "good pop music". That's ridiculous if her wearing bracelets and dark eyeliner interferes with his opinion on her "good pop music".

I know, random board, the irony.
Dean Winchester 07-31-2004, 02:30 PM I find it funny that calling Avril overrated gets more responces than someone who calls Nirvana overrated.
Nirvana made 1000 times the impact that a Radio Disney poseur ever could make. (now, I don't say I completely disagree with Mijada's opinion as people began to overexaggerate their importance after Kurt's death, but still something is seriously wrong if people are questioning Avril's overratedness and not Nirvana's), what the hell is wrong with today's youth that they've already forgotten about Nirvana? A band who paved the way for all the artists who influenced the artists who influenced Avril
Nighthawk76 07-31-2004, 03:03 PM Though I am a Nirvana fan, I think that Nevermind was one of the greatest albums ever recorded, I do think that they are a bit overrated to be honest. Many people speak like Nirvana is on the same level of importance as The Beatles and Led Zeppelin, and that is just plane absurd. Kurt was a very talented songwriter, but he wasn't exactly John Lennon or even Jim Morrison. And I think that it's probably important to remember that to the teens of today Avril could be rated as far more important then Nirvana. It's not that there is a problem with today's teens, it's just that they think diffrently and have different musical tastes them kids of ten years ago did. That's the way that it has always been. I'm sure that if I asked my dad he would think that Nirvana are of no importance what so ever. It's easy for us "older" members (and I use the word "older" very loosely because being 28 next Thursday makes me far from being old) to easily dismiss people like Avril or whoever, because these artists are not aimed at us. We don't take them seriously because we are not supposed to. This music isn't being made for us. Just like my dad thought grunge was a joke. Though I could care less about Avril and her music, I feel that some 16 or 17 year old has the right to say that she's important and that we need to respect that, because to this age group an artist like Avril is as important to then as say Guns N' Roses were (and still are) to me.

16 and 17? try 11 and 12. When I was 16-17, that was when Hanson and Spice Girls and Backstreet Boys were big... and NOBODY that age would be caught dead listening to them. I figure Avril is the same way to today's 16-17 year olds.
Nighthawk76 07-31-2004, 05:53 PM I just picked the ages of 16 or 17 because that's how old I was when Nirvana was popular. When Spice Girls and Hanson were big I was already in my early 20's. I'm sure though that Avril means more to teens today then Hanson and Spice did to teens in the late 1990's, and that she is regarded as a more serious artist then they were. Hanson and Spice's audiance was probably like 5 or 6 years old. All I was saying is that one age group doesn't always "understand" the music of an other's.
Nighthawk76 07-31-2004, 05:56 PM Is it just me or is Avril the source of constant debate around here?:D

I WILL BE 18 YEARS OLD IN A COUPLE MONTHS. I AM NOT 11, FOR THE 50TH TIME.
and as for your little theory, my mom listened to the spice girls, she collected stuff of them, she loved them. and she was in her 40's. kthxbi.

I know Dukey said this about a month ago, but since the subject has been bumped back up. I'm gonna reply.
But while I hate the likes of Avril and Hilary, I LOVE Maroon 5 and really like Franz Ferdinand. Those artists I doubt are aimed at my age group but yet I can still enjoy them, yet the likes of Avril and Hilary I just cannot stand.
