As we all know, Sally wanted "a Fella" badly. She gave the impression that, as long as he's single, she'd take him. She dated that guy from the insurance company in "Who Stole My Watch?" and a mortician in "Anthony Stone," among others.
So what was so bad about Burt Monker, a guy with his own delicatessen business and a definite eye for her in "Romance, Roses, & Rye Bread?" The poor guy couldn't get Sal to give him the time of day. Why not?

Good question.. My feeling is that our Sally liked her men on the taller. I guess Burt was too short :D

That episode always gave me the creeps. Burt almost acted like a stalker. If even Sally rejected him he must have been a real lonesome loser.

As our gal Sal put it, "Just because two people are lonely it doesn't mean if they get together it will solve everything." Obviously Sally wasn't completely serious about her "Gimme any single guy and I'll marry him!" motto.

Personally, I would have liked to have seen Sally get engaged and/or married during the series' run, but seeing her married in the revisited show was good enough for me! As Mary Richards would have said, "Sally 'made it after all!'"

That always bugged me about Burt
too. He was such a sad little
guy leading such sad life that
it just seemed cruel to toss
him off like that. He was as
good as guy as any of the others
and, really, already loved her.
He deserved a chance. The only
thing in Sally's defense is I
think Burt was meant to be more
of an undesireable guy than they
have been allowed to show because
it might have seemed cruel. (Does
that make sense?) Instead he was
just a mild guy and that sorta
makes Sally come across as too
unforgiving, or foolish, or cruel.
It's sad, but I bet most of us
have been on both sides of the
fence on this one. And it's always
sad and embarrassing. I don't like
that episode at all, but it's might
be the most true to life episode
they ever did. There are more Burt
and Sallys in this world than there
are happy Rob and Lauras. And it's
too bad.

That Herman question is a good one.

Upon looking up Mr. Idelson @ IMDB, Herman's listed in just 3 episodes (plus there's a 4th show for Bill, as the bellboy in "Never Bathe On Saturday", in which he gets off a great zinger -- "I knew I wasn't crazy!"). :)

Herman was talked about in many other episodes, so it kind of seemed like he was in many more shows. Which is similar to Barry Morse, as Lt. Philip Gerard, in "The Fugitive" (1963-1967). Morse appeared in just 38 of 120 episodes (not counting the opening credits), but it seemed like many more because he was referred to often (plus supposedly "on the phone", but not seen, in several others).

Interestingly, has anyone noticed that the names "Herman" and "Glimsher" were originally NOT placed together on the show? In S.1, Sally (while doing her nails in the office one day) mentions she has a date with "Herman" (but his last name's not uttered). But during this same scene, Buddy asks Sally about her other boyfriend; and Sally says "Oh, you mean Woodrow Glimsher".

And we also find out that "Herman" was introduced to Sally by Woodrow Glimsher's mother. An interesting twist huh? :)

EDIT -- IMDB's records are not entirely correct here. Because I know Herman was in the episode "Uncle George", but IMDB doesn't list him in that one. Any others they've omitted?

"Uncle George", btw, gives us our only look at "Mrs. Glimsher". -- "My pills, my pills, my pills! Oh, where's my boy??!!" :)

Well according to imdb.com, Herman was in 3 episodes. The episodes they list are "I Was a Teenage Head Writer", "My Husband Is a Check-Grabber", and "Dear Sally Rogers".

I know that I don't remember Herman being in "I Was a Teenage Head Writer" although I could be wrong. If my memory serves me right (and I'm thinking of the right episode), that was mostly a flashback episode, so it makes no sense that Herman was in it.

I know that imdb is missing at least one of his appearances. I know he was in one of the Stacy episodes where he hits Stacy for being on a date with Sally. It seems to me like there are also a few others that they are missing, but my tired brain can't think anymore tonight. Anyone want to add any more to the list?

I know that he appeard in at least four. He appeard in the "My Husband is a Check-Grabber" episode, "Stacey Petire Part I", "Dear Sally Rogers", and that episode with Rob's uncle, where Herman and his mother both appear.

Herman was in 'Uncle George,' where we also got to meet his mother.

You and I must have both tried to post those messages at the same time, Algebra. I got hung trying to do it the first time!

When I was a kid, I remember thinking George could never be Rob's uncle, because they look nothing alike. But now, having just watched the episode, I'd say the present Rob, from "TDVDS Remembered" looks a lot like Uncle George did back then!
