View Full Version : This kind of software my Dad's getting
G-Force Glockstar 07-26-2004, 09:23 PM I'm only allowed on the computer one hour a day, and I've always been abusing that privilige. So a few days ago my Dad gave me a final warning and said the next time I go over my limit, he'll take the computer our of my room and I probably won't get it for over 2 years!!
So he said he's getting this software where you can track down everyone you've been on the computer (internet and desktop), and it also tells my Dad how long I've been on it each day.
That means I might not be able to come here anymore because he might not like it here. But I hope he doesn't get that software!!
And I got a question about it. Can that software see your type in your password, and register, and type in a website address?
If you can, tell me all about that software. I'm so disappointed now!
I'm the biggest obsesser in the world, and I don't even get to be on it very much at all :(
When I'm 18, do u think I'll have alot more time to work on the computer?
Or will I have to work alot.
I hope the best then!
Brent88 07-26-2004, 09:34 PM It would help to know what the software's name is.
Anyway... there are programs that track everything you do. You only have to look into the History to see every website you have been on today.
When you get 18, you'll probably either be working several hours a day or be in college and working some. Unless your rich, you won't make it without working. You won't be able to afford a computer anyway. :p
That does NOT mean you won't have time on the computer though. Just look at fellow college students on here and how much they post(like Miss Vicki). :)
G-Force Glockstar 07-26-2004, 09:37 PM Sorry, he didn't tell me the name of the software.

We wouldn't know unless we knew which software it is.. but if it can see you type in your password it won't matter because notice that when you type it in the characters come out as *'s, so he wouldn't be able to see what you type.
Michael [hXc] 07-26-2004, 10:01 PM When my mom threatened to get software for me, she said it can decode passwords. so it might see your password.

dont sweat it so much FullHouseFan8795, just try to stay within your parents guidelines and hopefully they will give you more freedom as you get older and proove that you deserve their trust - or until we know what the name of the proggy is so we can crack it :)

well then that shouldn't even be legal. think of the things people could do with that.

Oh, they aren't legal. ;)

Depends on if you go to college, what classes you take...
Or what job you get...
Or if you have a boyfriend...
Or if you have other activities...
PZelda 07-26-2004, 10:50 PM Eventually, your dad is going to have to break down...When you get to high school, you're going to have those big, lovely papers that are so affectionately called "term papers", or for most people, "research papers". It will require the use of Microsoft Word and the internet to look up information.
And believe me...that takes more than 1 hour/day to do.

Oh, they aren't legal. ;) perfectly legal on your own computers - companies use them all the time too, it's their hardware and resources you are using so it is within their legal rights, as much as anyone dislikes it
(same thing applies to companies that read employee's emails - perfectly legal but wrong)

I'm gonna try to be a script writer for Hollywood as my job, so I'll probably be on the computer all day doing scripts and other fun things that I want! :)
I don't think I'll ever have a boyfriend. All the boys call me ugly, but the girls say I'm pretty.

Anything is possible. And chances are you're not ugly. You're at an age where people's appearance is changing so a lot of people go through a homely stage around 13. Usually people are cute little kids, they go through a homely stage at 12-14, and come out looking good again:)

You don't suppose this has anything to do with it?

Today I had another embarssing moment. I farted in class and everyone giggled and made a gross-looking face.
Has that happened to anyone else?

But if he gets the software and you go over the limit and he takes the computer away, wouldn't that be a waste of money spent on software that will never get used again?

Sterling Holobyte 07-27-2004, 12:59 PM It sounds like your Dad is just looking out for you, FullHouseFan8795. Try not to be too hard on him for wanting to do that. He probably has seen too many stories of kids lured away from their homes by perverts on the internet, and he is scared for you, and rightly so. I have a feeling though that as you get older and show what a responsible person you are(right?:) ), he'll lighten up on the internet rules.
Until then, be glad you have a Dad who cares enough to set rules. Alot of people don't.

It's not because of that. It's because he just doesn't want me on the computer all the time. He thinks I act like computer is my only interest. But I have lots of other interests!
Michael [hXc] 07-27-2004, 02:34 PM Okay, I have an idea. Show him all of these other interests and make it seem like your on here less than you are. that's what i did:)

You shouldn't be on the computer all the time anyway.
I can see your dad's point of view in a way. There's so many bad things on the internet, and he just wants to protect you from that. He probably isn't too keen on you being on a messageboard like this. I'm not saying I agree, but I can see where he wouldn't be comfortable with you coming on here.

Ok! :) Thanks.
Like what hobbies could I have? Other than TV and computer, I like swimming, volleyball, listening to music, being with my friends, and sometimes drawing and coloring can be fun. And I love to write stories!

I've told my parents I've been here before, and that you just talk about TV shows here. I think that's all they know. But I really don't know if they'd like it here. Maybe they would, maybe they wouldn't.
And I know there are many bad things out there, but I don't ever try to get on bad websites. But maybe you mean it differently....

but one thing- when doing these other interests make it seem like you are really interested, not just another way to spend time.

How long will this take to make him know that I like other hobbies too?
Michael [hXc] 07-27-2004, 08:41 PM two weeks should work. but in the meantime try to be able to come here. i can't imagine it without you:(

Chit Chat is basically the only place where bad things are so maybe you should just stay away from Chit Chat.

Ok. Should I even go there and read stuff, or should I just not go there at all?
Well, I gotta go now. I'll try to be back tomorrow!
Bye!

Stay away means don't read it. If your dad really does get this software, even if you just visit, it still shows up in the history.
I am Him 07-28-2004, 01:10 AM How bout you log on, copy and paste what you want to read onto a word file, and read the stuff offline. That way you can read all the stuff online without actually being online that long.
robyrob 07-28-2004, 07:35 AM i was trying to clean-up my sister-in-law's computer yesterday and it actually had a keylogger virus on it (and about three other worms, including the msblast worm) the only way i found the thing was by trying to trackdown some random entries in the system logs, and the fact that the other viruses were making it crash
try bargaining with your dad - say you'll get better grades or read books, or do extra chores in exchange for more computer time, and remind him that he can still take it away if you DO abuse it

Good idea!! I'll try that, but I don't know if it'll work.
