DollaBill 07-26-2004, 05:42 PM I agree, she seems more serious about this music than ever before. I hope it's her comin out(not like Brit or Chris).
Funny ass signature too:lol:
Dean Winchester 07-26-2004, 05:53 PM why do actors insist on singing? I can't name 3 actors-turned-singers whose music careers lasted past the "wow, look whose singing this song... it's that guy/girl from ______". I feel the same way for the most part about singers trying to act.
Yes, J. Lo did have a successful music career, but at the same time, it also cost her an incredible amount of credibility, people stopped taking her seriously as an actress because she was singing songs like Jenny From The Block.
This is like the late 70's or mid-late 80's all over again. With all these young tv stars deciding "I wanna be a singer too!!!" to cash in on their moment of phase. it's no different than the late 70's when John Travolta, Cheryl Ladd, Lynda Carter and David Soul (and a lot of other ABC stars) decided they wanted to sing, and in the mid-late 80's when Don Johnson, Jack Wagner and Bruce Willis all decided to unleash their inner-rock star on us.
Why would Raven wanna go into music when seeing the laughs and indifference both Phylicia Rashad and Tempestt Bledsoe got when they went into singing?
BowWowsBreezy 07-26-2004, 06:09 PM raven cannot sing, yet she had the odasity to completely kill stevie wonders superstition at the motown 45 concert special :o
no offense to any of her fans
DollaBill 07-26-2004, 06:28 PM Hello, it's called the entertainment buisness!
Actors sing, singers act, it's all about doing what you love. I can't agree that she's bad at it, because it's all about your ears and opinion on what sounds good. If they label themselves as 'entertainers', then I agree they should grasp every are of that genre. She's done 2 albums already(who cares if they aren't platinum), people who come up with the crap that actors can't become singers
Her music isn't horrible, niether is her singing. A little history on the music she's been involved with these past 2 years:
1. The Cheetah Girls Special Edition Soundtrack
Released June 22, 2004
Highest Chart Position: #3 on Top Kid Audio Chart, #9 on Top Soundtracks Chart
2. That's So Raven
Released May 18, 2004
Highest Chart Position: #1 on Top Kid Audio Chart, #2 on Top Soundtracks Chart, #44 on Billboard 200
3. The Cheetah Girls
Released August 12, 2003
Highest Chart Position: #1 on Top Soundtracks Chart, #1 on Top Kid Audio Chart, #33 on The Billboard 200
Certified Platinum and approaching sales of 2 million copies in 2004, The Cheetah Girls is the highest-selling Disney Channel album to date.
Disney albums are known to stay on the charts for months...plus are you saying Raven couldn't succeed at making a hit record, when Hilary Duff has a multi-platinum selling album! Like I said, this is a different time in music history. Doin lame music in the past hasn't taken her down yet, she seems to be as popular as when people first saw her.
raven cannot sing, yet she had the odasity to completely kill stevie wonders superstition at the motown 45 concert special
I haven't heard any complaints about how she sounded yet, I say she sounded great to say she was dancing too. Considering people who always lip sing.

yea, but once again, when actors go into music, it's usually just seen as a cute gimmick during the peak of their careers, and it usually never lasts. Bruce Willis is still a pretty big movie star, but yet he hasn't done a record in 15 years. Hell, John Travolta's still around and he hasn't done any music since Grease (he recorded a few albums before that movie during his days on Kotter). The problem with actors-turned-singers is that the albums are usually just vanity projects, nothing that really stays in peoples minds down the road.
I've yet to encounter an actor-turned-singer who takes the music thing seriously, as something they wish to make a long-lasting career out of.

well first of all, she ain't that popular...the kids charts don't mean much (and 2 million copies ain't that great nowadays) and i won't even begin w/ this...second of all, yes she did suck at the motown 45 concert and everyone i know who saw it would say that sucked is an understatement for that performance, i don't care if raven chooses to cut a record cuz thats her buisness just as long as she leaves the greats alone and doesnt get upset when her album doesnt make the important charts!!!!!!!

I really disagree with that. Acting and singing are two completely different things. That's like saying everyone who plays professional baseball should play professional football, too. It just doesn't work that way.

exactly.
Just because you're a decent actress doesn't mean you belong in a recording studio (Jennifer Lopez)
Just because you're a decent singer doesn't mean you belong in front of the cameras (Madonna, Mariah Carey)

She isn't that popular? So you agree she IS popular, whether you believe it's alot or not. The kids charts don't mean much? Kids charts mean a hell of alot, considering the actors, actresses and singers they support are damn near making more money than A-list actors and singers. 2 million copies aren't that much? Here's something I can laugh at, how many soundtracks with just 8 songs from a cheesy movie can you name that sold 2 million copies??
I'm sure everybody you know didn't see this performance, and I bet it's likely most of the people you know can't stand Raven, so that's an ending to that discussion. All of her albums have made the important charts, frankly she doesn't care because she has other things going for her. She's young, beautiful, educated and talented.

Your opinion is your opinion, but nobody gets to decide what anybody else SHOULD do. I never said anybody should, there was a difference in how I stated my opinion, it's their right. I don't see why a professional baseball player couldn't become a professional football player, it's still a sport!
I really didn't announce this to hear people say "she shouldn't be singing", it was just an announcment. I think if you didn't like her, you shouldn't have responded.

actually, the way record sales have gone downhill, 2 million is very impressive. Only 3 or 4 albums (Usher, Norah and one or two other titles) have made it past the 2 million mark this year in terms of scans. The days of 1999-2000 are long gone.

I don't want to start anything here, but...what? Just because you're good at something DOES NOT mean you're automatically good at something else in the same field, whether it be sports or entertainment.
There may be a few lucky ones who are able to both sing and act, but there aren't many. My point was simply that a person isn't necessarily good at everything that has to do with entertainment just because they can act.
I'm not relating this to Raven or anything...it's just a comment.

Dont' misconstrue what I'm saying, read carefully. I didn't say everybody is gone be good at everything they do, I said we are in no place to say what people should limit themselves to! I don't think you should just always try things you're good at, taking risks is apart of life.

Actors and singers are two completely different things. The only reason annoying teenies like hilary duff get record deals are because they're already actors and obviously their record labels need money. Just because they can act doesn't mean they can sing. If i was an engineer, would that automatically give me the ability and right to become a hair stylist? they're both types of services. :santa2:

Engineers and hair stylists are two totaly different things in what you're talking about, but if you were a hair stylist who wanted to become a make-up artist, it's still in the Cosmetology category. Singer and actors entertain, and I'm sure the buisness they're in is called ENTERTAINMENT industry! So what do broadway actors do that is so different from anybody else in the entertainment industry does? They sing, dance and act! I just don't agree with the fact that people should limit themselves to things because other people think "they shouldn't be doing it".
What am I not touching points with you people on?

As I said, there are the special few who have the talents to both sing and act, but there aren't many. Hey...if you've got the talent, you should branch out! That's just usually not the case.
Basically, I don't believe that actors should automatically think, "I'm in the entertainment business...I can act, sing, dance, write, direct, and produce!" That's what seems to be happening in Hollywood these days.

but the thing is, 99% of the time... it's not that good. I think the reason J. Lo is now considered a joke in Hollywood is about 80% responsible about the music she put out. When she was doing movies like Selena and Out Of Sight, she had respect in Hollywood, not in a Jodie Foster or Meryl Streep way, but people did think she had talent, and people over 12 liked her movies. And then she started doing awful songs (yes, they were hits... but who still likes them? longevity is a major factor. Better to have a song people are still into in 5 years than make your millions and then have the cd relegated to used bins) like I'm Real and Jenny From The Block and her fanbase became progressively younger, and her lyrics got more and more banal, and those same people who thought she was great in Selena were laughing when she flopped in Gigli... because through her crappy music, she destroyed the credibility she had before she decided to open her yappers and try singing.

I can't wait to get this, I love the last one, even though that was 99 and I was 12. Considerably my music tastes have changed, but I'm still gettin it.

seriously, I'd be hardpressed to think of 10 singers-turned-actors who weren't total embarassments
offhand:
Bette Midler
Barbra Streisand
Cher
Diana Ross (but even she had only one GREAT performance)
Bjork
Will Smith
Ice Cube
David Bowie
are the only ones that come to mind that sang (or rapped), then went into acting, and actually gave performances riveting enough that you forget you're watching the "pop star". As much as I love Madonna, with the exception of Evita, she has never been able to give a movie performance where she isn't being "Madonna in a movie", some of her best films she is just being herself.

Dean Winchester 08-03-2004, 04:21 PM for the most part, I think the big difference between singers-turned-actors and actors-turned-singers is that, while there are a lot of bad singers-turned-actressses, the ones that actually do a good job acting actually take the movie biz seriously. Actresses like Cher and Barbra Streisand have given performances in movies that won over people who don't even like their music. Why? because they didn't see going into movies as a vanity thing, but instead "I wanna show the world that I am an ACTRESS".
On the other hand, practically every actor-turned-singer type has never truly taken the music thing seriously, and used it mostly as a vanity thing to cash in on their fame. Someone like J. Lo has had success singing, but she has never been more than a fluff singer, you can tell she isn't in it for any "artistic meaning" nor does she take the music seriously, she was just doing it knowing that she was hot at the moment and wanted to strike while the iron was hot.

Absolutely. I despise Cher's singing voice, but she's really a good actress.
Superstar 08-04-2004, 06:54 AM Yes I agree with you
But in the end of the day she's been doing this for years, its not like she was striking when the iron was hot because her first CD came out in 1993 and her second in 1999. She wasn't exactly popular in 1999. She appears to take this music thing seriously, but as I said before, we'll have to wait and see

well, my post was nothing at all about Raven, but about the countless other tv and movie stars who decide "you know, I'm popular right now, why not go into music?". Because someone wanted to know the difference between singers who go into movies and actors who go into music.
Two examples I can think of as a rare breed of actor who actually does care about the music is Kevin Bacon and Russell Crowe. Both of them have their own bands, and neither of them have ever used the "I'm Russell Crowe, you loved me in Gladiator so check this out" card that someone like J. Lo has. Crowe for example actually keeps a very low-key approach to his music because he wants his music to speak for itself, and wants people to go to his concerts for the music and not him (the band doesn't even have his name in there). But for every Thirty Odd Foot Of Grunts or Bacon Brothers who really are passionate about the music and take it as seriously as they take actor (Russell was once quoted as saying his band is his true passion, but he does the movies to bring home the bacon), there's so so so many more people like Cheryl Ladd, Lynda Carter, Bruce Willis, etc.. who struck music when they were hot, but never intended a long career out of it.
If Raven has been doing it for 11 years, then I think she's serious about it

But for every Thirty Odd Foot Of Grunts or Bacon Brothers who really are passionate about the music and take it as seriously as they take actor (Russell was once quoted as saying his band is his true passion, but he does the movies to bring home the bacon), there's so so so many more people like Cheryl Ladd, Lynda Carter, Bruce Willis, etc.. who struck music when they were hot, but never intended a long career out of it.
Your right, that guy Spike from Buffy..James Marsters I think has a band as well and is low-key about it. I like when actors do that, that they don't go for the record deal etc. and they play small clubs and stuff
vienna waits 08-04-2004, 05:34 PM Theres a clip on Disney where Raven is talking about how her new song is featured on the Princess Diaries. At the end they have her "sing" a little clip. It was clearly fake & lip syncing.. very annoying. If you're gonna sing, SING.

But you don't get, it's just for promotion of the movie, wanna hear her sing live go see a concert or something. There are performers who never sing live, or probably shouldn't. She's sang live plenty of times before, I don't think she needs to if it isn't neccessary.
Superstar 08-05-2004, 06:01 AM Well it wld be nice if she always sang live but....I guess it is just a commercial

yea, what's the big deal. EVERYONE lipsynchs in their commercials, same with their music videos. That's different than not singing in concert.
Superstar 08-06-2004, 07:03 AM Your right.....it wld be rare to sing live in a commercial. At all her performances so far, she has sung live
