View Full Version : Why were there 2 Maggie's?

Hello all!

Just curious about something. Why were there two Maggie's on DIFFERENT STROKES? Was Dixie Carter fired from the role or did she leave willingly? I personally preferred Dixie in the role as Maggie, yet Mary Ann did well too. If anyone knows, I'd appreciate an answer. Thanks!

This is one of those subjects which really makes you pissed off at Gary Coleman. Gary fired her, and threatened to leave the show if Dixie stayed, he said that she wasn't the right substance that the show needed.

Are you serious? Her departure had to do with Gary Coleman? My goodness, the chump does seem to take himself a little too seriously, doesn't he...

It's too bad. Dixie was great...

I thought maybe it had to do with the fact that Dixie got Designing Women. I believe it started in '85. I could be mistaken though.

No, "Designing Women" started in 1986. "The Golden Girls" was the show that started in 1985.

I still can't believe Gary Coleman was responsible for her firing. It seems I lose respect for him more and more every day...

That is so sad if Gary did get her fired. Everytime I watch "Diff'rent Strokes" with my mom she always says how it is a shame he grew up to be a smart@ss. I don't know Gary though, so I'm not going to say he is a smart@ss, and I'm not going to say he is the sweetest guy in the world. I just find that he was a wonderful Arnold, but it is a shame if he is what my mom said he grew up to be....

Dudley: It's not that I was afraid of getting hurt or anything; it's just that-- well, it's kind o' hard to play the flute with a busted finger.

Gary Coleman and Dixie Carter didn't get along at all. It's a shame because Dixie did a much better job as Magie than Mary Ann Mobely did.

Who did he get along with??? At least justice prevailed. She went on to be a star with a healthier career, and more importantly, she's got respect. You go Dixie!

This is interesting. Where did you hear that, callmetootie?

It's amazing that Gary Coleman had the power to do that, although it's not surprising in one way since Gary was the star of the show.

That was a dumb thing for him to do. It makes the show look stupid when 2 different people play as the same character.

Not to ruffle any feathers here,,,especially the Dixie fans,, but didn't DC also have trouble getting along with Delta Burke on the set of 'Designing Women.' Maybe she should've tried a little harder to get along with Gary who was btw the star of DS long b4 she ever showed up,,,she was after all the adult in this situation.

That being said,,I am not a Dixie hater,,actually thought she was quite funny on DW although imo Delta was the one who carried that show.

Hi Ed.

This is what actually happened. I spoke to Shavar Ross(Dudley) and he said "She was fired by Gary (indirectly). Gary just didn't like her." As far as threatening to leave the show I never heard of it. Maybe. I don't know.

Getting Dixie fired was a great move for Gary because he ultimately wanted the show cancelled. Oh sure there were other factors that led to the show's demise, but the show lost a good chunk of credibility (make that watchibility too) without her.

The situation with "Designing Women" was altogether different. That feud started with Delta and the producers and would have escalated whether Dixie was part of the cast or not. I'm not saying the woman is a saint or anything, but let's give credit where credit is due.

And nothing against Gary per se, but I find myself less and less impressed with him as time goes on. He always seems to blame everyone else for his problems. Even his brushes with the law he mostly blames on the fame that came with being on "Different Strokes". Now who's the one NOT being an adult here? The guy is in his 30s and talks of "Different Strokes" like it was 10 years in Vietnam.

Give us a break already Coleman! A lot of the crap you got into was all by your lonesome and I for one refuse to help you indulge in your own pity trip. You've had luxuries that only some of us can dream about and you're the one who screwed it up. Quit acting like you're a victim already!

That's right. Beyond that, I'm not going to stick up for Gary Coleman, I don't know and don't intend to find out all of the facts. But unless you've lived in his skin, this trashing him to the extent that some of you are is bordering on the ugly side of life. Gossip is oh so easy to throw around.

10? During the whole series? C'mon!

Besides, my criticism of him is of how he is now, not how he was then. He's being a jack*** who wants to be perceived as some sort of victim when he actually set in motion a lot of the crap that happened to him. Pity? I think not...

I have trouble with the characters changing to a different face also. It seemed lide Samantha was being unfaithful to Darren. And John Boy, in the Waltons, when John boy the 2nd came on the scene, I never adjusted to that. He seemed like an impostor to me.

LOL That's Funny, But I Read Mrs.Rae at first didn't want to leave the show, and the only reason she did that show (In the Beginning) was because she was told she'd be back on "Diff'rent Strokes" if FOL Failed...

Yeah let's not gang up on Gary. We don't know what really went on. Personally I could care less who plays Maggie, just as long as they didn't replace Willis, Kimberly, or Arnold. Heck, I wouldn't even care if one of you guys played Maggie.

But you've got a point, the character of "Maggie" is not as important as Willis, Kimberly and Arnold (and of course, Mr. D).

(sighs) We have been through this B4. She was fired. It was a sad thing but it's almost been 17 years since it happened. I Love Dixie too but I'm sure that she has gotten over it and we need to do the same. After all, She went to star in Designing Women a year after her termination. End Of Story.

Mary Ann, I got this information from Shavar Ross, the guy who played Dudley on the show. It's like getting it straight from the horse's mouth.

Thank You Jethro. Mary Ann, do you want to have enemies or something? So far you have critized many on this board. We want to enjoy this board. So on behalf of myself, Jethro, other moderators, senior member and new members. Cut it out! If you want to believe that Dixie went to Designing Women right after Diff'rent Strokes, do it! This is getting dumb. I know who I got my facts from. I don't have any enemies on this board and don't intend on having any. You lash out and call people stupid. We don't want troublemakers and if that is what you intend to do, then quit posting.

Even though I am a man. I could have worn a dress, wig, & makeup & could have played Maggie. I not sure if as many viewers would have thought I would have made a good Maggie. I would have given it 110% though. I personally think I could have filled out the dresses better than Mary ann Mobley & Dixie Carter though.

Plus this topic has gotten off base if the rest of you want to start a new topic about Maggie that's fine because I am closing this thread due to "someone's" behavior. Start a new topic. I will be watching closely, MaryAnn. Any posts you do write that offends others will be deleted!
