Here are my choices for the top five coolest animated series opening credits:

5. The SUPERMAN cartoons of Max and Dave Fleisher---With the cosmic backgroud and our hero streaking thru the sky like a hyped-up comet, followed by the boisterous (and BEST) Superman theme ever (eat your heart out, John Williams!), these cartoons capture the essence of who Superman really is...a saviour of the downtrodden.

4. SPEED RACER---That driving musical beat, coupled with Speed in the Mach Five tearing up the racetrack, thrusts you right into the story, even without the nonstop breathless narration that follows!

3. THUNDERCATS---With all the Thundercats (and Snarf) ever-present and ready for battle, and that '80s neo-inspirational theme booming in the background...what more can you say?

2. SPACE GHOST---The least silly of Hanna-Barbera's supehero series, Space Ghost boasts a memorable theme and Gary Owens's heroic battle-cry ringing in your ears, even after the first commercial.

and finally, number 1...BATMAN: THE ANIMATED SERIES---if ever there was a perfect opening, one that told you who the character was and what he was all about, it was this Bruce Timm designed take on everyone's favorite crime-fighter...and no obtrusive logos or producer credits to get in the way of the action!

Well, those are my selections...what about the rest of you? What do YOU think is the coolest openings?

To W.J.Griffith:
Yes, SPACE GHOST was one of the least sillest Hanna-Barbera superhoeroes and even less so for Gary Owens - not just a funny voice..

Anywya mine would be the ORIGINAL ALVIN SHOW, with the big brassy open

Hanna-Barbera's three mid-1960s licesnsed franchises-SINBAD JR.with various shbot of what SInbad and Salty the parrot do all day..(keep it out of the gutter)
ABBOTT AND COSTELLO, very jazzy background and design with the neato ways of showing the Hanna-Barbera and voice artist credits, with the famous BONNNNGGG HB effect channeled thru Disney (by way of UPA TV).
and LAUREL AND HARDY with the four box (BRADY BUNCH-ish) graphic open.

The pre-mid sixties enings, and the Bugs Bunny show various opens, and Spidey as wlell, and Space Ghost.

Also, GUMBY's early clay dissolves into the legend:
A
G U M B Y
A D V E N T U R E

then the middle-to-late sisxties "He was once..." Can't stand the modern onbe...

The LINUS THE LIONHEARTED,
POPEYE and BEANY & CECIL openings were among the best of the smaller studio offerings.Along with..

GIGANTTOR...GIGAAAAANTOR.......

Well, i can agree with a couple of those...Superman, Speed Racer ( well maybe ) < Was known as Gogo Mach in Japan, btw; and certainly the Batman series , but, you old timers might remember the orig HOT WHEELS cartoon? man, best TV theme EVER ( late 60s or early 70s ) and anyone into anime should catch the begining of the orig Catgirl Nuku Nuku series, man Megumi Hayashbara can sing! Well, anyway, cool idea for a topic ;)
