Volunteers Help Search for Missing Jogger
Jul. 20, 2004

SALT LAKE CITY (AP/KSL News) -- Family members say they're overwhelmed by the number of volunteers who are looking for Lori Hacking today.

Chad Hacking says the family has not had a lot of sleep after the disappearance of his sister-in-law and says there's been a lot of praying.

The search got under way early this morning for the 27-year-old who disappeared during a morning jog yesterday near Memory Grove.

The woman's brother-in-law, Scott Hacking, said she has gone running about three times a week for four years.

"She's very familiar with the area. She's in very good shape," he said.

Last night, SWAT teams spent the night scouring both sides of City Creek Canyon using thermal imaging equipment, but Salt Lake City police say they didn't find anything out of the ordinary.

Police are hoping for about two-to-three-thousand volunteers to assist in today's search.

Volunteers met at 6:45 am at the Medals Plaza parking lot, which is at 300 West between North and South Temple. Buses took searchers to Memory Grove.

Volunteers were encouraged to dress for warm weather, wear hiking shoes, and bring lots of water.

Searchers are being divided into groups of ten and given a grid map of areas to scour near Memory Grove along with City Creek Canyon.

Lori and Mark Hacking have been married almost five years. They learned last Thursday that she is five weeks pregnant.

They planned to move next week to Chapel Hill, N.C., where Mark Hacking is to attend medical school.

Mark Hacking works the night shift at inpatient psychiatry and usually is sleeping when Lori Hacking goes running. She normally returns home about 6:30 a.m. to shower and get ready for work. "Then I usually drive her to work," he said.

On Monday, he woke up later in the morning and called Wells Fargo and learned she had not arrived for work.

The park and canyon have been closed to everyone but searchers.

There are fliers up around downtown with Lori Hacking's description. She has long curly brown hair, is around 5'4" and has brown eyes. If you've seen her please call 799-3000.

How much do you want to bet the husband will be arrested in the next few weeks?

If he did kill her he is a complete idiot to think that he will get away with it.

...because it's ALWAYS the husband's fault until he's proven innocent otherwise

Oh, I'm sorry. Most husbands turn out to be innocent.

Right.

We all know about the notorious woman snatcher in Utah.
He is a local legend.

If the cops dismiss the husband right off the bat then they are idiots.

yeah it works both ways.

I mean be real, who do you look at first? And look really freaking hard.

The "I was sleeping" story always turns out to be true.

I remember a story where a guy was so fat he rolled over on his wife and smothered her to death!

But not while she was jogging in the woods.

Even to this day I think most of America knows Gary Condit had something to do with Chandra Levy's death.

Don't dismiss what is right in your face.

Obviously.

I know jack squat about this case, but I was just saying how it turns out to be the husband in a pathetically obvious way in so many of these cases.

Let's come back to this when someone is indicted.

What are the odds the sleeping husband is?

This reminds me a little bit of the Laci Patterson case. She was pregent when she was missing. Was it her husband, probably?
And about this case, that's sad. It might have been her husband, it usually is.

I just watched this story on Fox. It's unbelieveable. I don't expect a good outcome, but anything is possible. Remember Elizabeth Smart.

All relatives, particulary husbands, are always questioned and (sometimes) eliminated as suspects, so the investigation can move forward.

Husband of Missing Jogger 'Person of Interest' in Case

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - The families of Mark Hacking and his missing wife were stunned to learn just moments before their news conference that he had not graduated from college or been accepted at a medical school, as he had said.

"We were of the impression that he had graduated from the University of Utah recently, and just found out a few minutes ago that he never applied to medical school in North Carolina," Douglas Hacking, the visibly shaken father of Mark Hacking, told the news conference Wednesday.

The news conference was delayed briefly while police told families what officers had known for at least a day of the discrepancies that The Associated Press had just reported.

Mark and Lori Hacking had been preparing to move within the next few days to North Carolina, where he said he had been accepted for medical schools.

But on Monday, he reported his wife missing, saying she never returned from a morning jog.

And on Wednesday, the University of North Carolina said he had never applied to the medical school.

Also, the University of Utah said he was enrolled at the Salt Lake City university from spring 1999 to fall 2002, majoring in intermediate psychology, but never graduated.

"The police have been aware of that since yesterday and did not share that with us," Douglas Hacking said. "It still doesn't necessarily answer the question, 'What has happened to Lori?"'

It was information police didn't think that the family needed to know, and may not mean anything, Detective Dwayne Baird said.

They said it did not elevate Mark Hacking to the level of a suspect, and Baird said it was "just a piece of this puzzle."

Police Chief Rick Dinse said "There is no question (Mark Hacking) is a person of interest - and he would be regardless of" the discrepancies.

Mark Hacking was to have been at the news conference, but he has not appeared publicly since late Monday. The family had said only that he was in "a safe place and getting the help he needs."

KSL-TV reported Wednesday night that he had been admitted to the University of Utah hospital's psychiatric ward. It said he was not in the ward where he works. The Salt Lake Tribune said he is a psychiatric technician at the university's Neuropsychiatric Institute.

Police officials said they knew where Mark Hacking was but they would not say whether it was at the psychiatric facility. University Hospital also declined to confirm the report. Jen Washburn, a spokeswoman for the family, said only that they had provided no information about that.

Meanwhile, the family of the missing 27-year-old woman feared the disclosures would distract attention from the search.

"The message is that Lori is still missing," said her mother Thelma Soares, tears welling up in her eyes. "We'll work the other stuff out later."

Earlier this week, Mark Hacking said he works the night shift and usually sleeps when his wife goes running. He said she normally returns home about 6:30 a.m. to shower and get ready for work. He said she normally would wake him up to drive her to work.

He said that on Monday, he woke up later in the morning and learned she had never arrived for work. Her car was found outside Memory Grove Park in City Creek Canyon. The park and canyon have been exhaustively searched, with 1,200 volunteers taking part on Tuesday.

Police also have removed items from the couple's apartment near the university. They would not say what they have taken from the apartment, but television news footage showed paper bags, boxes and a box spring being removed. KSL said it saw a computer being taken out.

Police impounded a large trash bin from behind the apartment complex. Baird would not confirm reports that police were looking at a mattress found inside the bin.

Friends said the couple learned last Thursday that she was five weeks pregnant. The Tribune said police said Wednesday that has not been confirmed.

He was "competing" with his successful brothers. So he lies? LOSER.

And how convenient...I'm too stressed...I need hospitalized so the cops don't talk to me.
