View Full Version : Should Lilith have been a regular?
Chambers 07-18-2004, 09:20 PM A short while ago, I would have said YES right away. But I've been thinking lately, and I've decided that less is more. I loved Frasier the way it was. I worship the few episodes that Lilith was in, but I would be afraid that if she were a regular, the show would be more about Frasier and Lilith and less about Frasier, Niles and Martin. Those three were the crux of the show. Had Lilith been around, I don't think Frasier's character would have been able to grow much. I also question how Lilith's character would have to develop if she were a central player. Lilith can be a tad too caricaturish - unlike the rest of the Frasier cast. Even though, in her later episodes on the show, the writers did reveal more depth and showed her to be much more than just an "ice queen." Sure, it would have been really fun to have a Lilith and Frasier show. Yet this would've resulted in stronger ties to Cheers, which may have prevented Frasier from standing on its own. We'd see the same arguments, the same fights...and I'm not sure that would keep us interested for much longer. I'm glad Lilith wasn't a regular. Less IS more.
Brian Damage 07-18-2004, 09:30 PM I say no, it made her appearances more special.
barwars 07-18-2004, 10:52 PM Would've I liked it.... yes.
Would've been as good.... no.
I read the other day that Bebe Neuwirth was proposed to be a regular at some point.
I just wonder if she was proposed when the show began, or later in the series.
Moondance 07-19-2004, 05:55 PM I liked how she showed up unexpected! Every Crane went "AHH!" It was great! - Lilith goes there when the condo needs cooling off;)
Poor Daphne had one of her psychic headaches in season ONE!
"It's one of me psychic headaches...I haven't had a throbbing like this before!" Too funny!
Daphne: Oh, my head!
Frasier: Can I get you an aspirin, Daphne?
Daphne: Oh, no, no, I'm afraid those are useless. This is one of my psychic headaches. There's some kind of negative force out
there. I only get these when there's a clawing at the cosmic continuum.
Niles: Perhaps if someone rubbed your temples—
Frasier: Niles! I'm sure she wants privacy while she contacts the
mother ship.

I was under the impression that she was asked after the show began...but I'm not positive.
Actually go to that site. It's an interview with her, and if I read correctly, she wasn't asked to be a regular.

TG: Did, uh, were you ever asked to be a regular on Frasier?
BEBE NEUWIRTH: (bluntly) No - No, they never asked to be, uh - me to be a regular on Frasier. They don't need me.
TG: (interrupting) But you do make appearances?
BEBE NEUWIRTH: Yeah, I go on once in a while, but they really don't need my character on that show. Gosh, they do such a good...they do such a good job with, uh, um, with this world that they've created. Uh...it's - that's fine.
That interview is from '97, though...so maybe she was asked later??
barwars 07-19-2004, 06:34 PM There was a rumor going around that she was going to join the cast (as a regular) during the middle of Season 11.
They probably wanted to build her up for the finale.
Chambers 07-19-2004, 06:35 PM Oooh, I see. That makes sense now.
barwars 07-19-2004, 06:38 PM I'm not sure if that's true....
but the whole Frasier/Charlotte storyline wouldve just been replaced with Lilith with some slight adjusting.
I know I wouldve liked it more.
Chambers 07-19-2004, 06:41 PM Same here. I didn't like the fact that Frasier ended up chasing somebody the audience didn't really care about.

Oh my! I wish Lilith could've been there more. I didn't really like Charlotte.

BebeSternin 07-21-2004, 08:39 PM I liked Charlotte as a charactor, I really did. But, um..she has no right to be with Frasier.
Although, after eleven years, it is a bit hard to bring back Lilith & Frasier. They just..didn't have a healthy relationship. But it's Lilith. And we all love her. Right?
And Lilith as a regular would've been..really weird. (I've always found it funny though that Bebe wasn't added to the opening credits until season ten, and then taken off by the end of the year, but that's a whole 'nother post.) Just because..it would be too much after a while. And that's already been said. So, I'm done.
Except to say: Aww..she said "gosh!"
calvertfan 07-25-2004, 08:56 AM As much as I love her, it just wouldn't have been the same show with her in every ep. However I wish she'd been in a few more than she was - say at least 4 per season? ;) I look forward with glee to each Lilith ep....but there's precious few of them!
ThirteenInchEscape 07-26-2004, 03:11 AM I said to a friend that I wished Frasier and Lillith would not have got divorced, and the show could have been about their married life in Seattle. She said that the main problem with that was that the main point of the show was how Frasier could not keep a woman.
The show could have been very funny with Frasier and Lillith living with Martin and Daphne because I think that Martin, Daphne, and Roz would all have been very annoyed by Lillith.
The only problem with this, is that Frasier, Lillith, Martin, Daphne, and Frederick all living in one apartment would have been far too much of a full house.
Anyway, there definately would have been some sacrifices, but Lillith is pretty much the greatest female character in sitcom history, so she is worth it
