I'm waiting on my replacement set too. :( Petrie Malone 07-19-2004, 10:21 AM I just got season 5 for my b-day, but I haven't watched it yet. (I'm still working my way through the Season 4 Set.) The posts you guys have submitted aren't too reassuring, so now I'm a little worried about my own set! Are there particular episodes you noticed problems, or was it just the general quality of the whole season set? If it's certain episodes, I would really appreciate knowing what episodes and what's wrong with them. I'll check out those episodes A.S.A.P! Thanks so much guys! Kurt Carrie 07-19-2004, 11:42 AM I had most of my problems with discs 1 and 2. The episodes Uhny Uftz, The Ugliest Dog in the World, Odd But True and Viva Petrie all had awful white flashes all over them. I also noticed that with disc 5, sometimes the picture would freeze up after some episodes and extras. Lolac 07-19-2004, 12:57 PM My problems were with discs 3 and 4. I couldn't even watch "Bottom of Mel Cooley's Heart" or "Long Night's Journey Into Day." My DVD player couldn't even read them. I also had white flashes, but I don't remember which episodes. Lolac  SawgrassSteve 07-19-2004, 02:07 PM Strange Story: After posting "No Problems" on my dvds, I'm watching "The Curse Of The Petrie People," this morning, and suddenly, about half way through, the picture freezes! I'd watched it before with no problems. Then it continues to play, but really choppy. I advance it to "From The Bottom Of Mel Cooley's Heart," and five seconds into the ep, it freezes solid! After panicing and looking for my receipt (found it!) I decided to clean the disc and try it again. I did (nothing fancy, just wiped it with the cotton shirt I was wearing), and it's been playing just fine. I'm going to run through all of my S.5 discs again, but I have a feeling we may all have some dusty, staticy players from all of the watching we're doing. Steve Dorothys BestPal 07-19-2004, 04:01 PM I had similar problems with another disc set, Friends, . I purchased a Maxell Lense cleaner for about 15 bucks. That seemed to do the trick. Anytime I have a lense start to freeze or skip, I run a cleaning cycle and after that its all good. I have had some problems with this current disc set, not a bad as others. I am at work now. So I have to run. I will expand on the details later :) Lolac 07-19-2004, 07:52 PM I tried the disc cleaning trick with my set and it didn't work. I hope my replacement set isn't defective. I am going to try the laser cleaning kit just for general use. It's not a bad idea. Lolac  algebra74 07-19-2004, 09:31 PM Wow. I never thought about that. I just received the Mary Tyler Moore Show--First Season Set in the mail today, and two of the discs were scratched, and an episode froze in the middle. I thought, "that's it!". I bet 50% of my DVDs have been returned and exchanged. I had no idea that they had these cleaning discs for DVD players. I may have to check it out and go get one. It seems as though even the smallest scratch on a DVD causes a major problem when viewed, and so I just about lost hope in DVDs all together, thinking that they are too easily damaged. This sure is great news! However, I do find that rubbing a CD or DVD with a cloth usually causes more scratches. With my S. 5 set, discs one and two worked fine with no found problems, but discs 3, 4, and 5 all suffer from picture freezing and random colored blocks appearing on the screen. Jan Anderson 07-20-2004, 03:27 AM 2. No problems so far, but this whole cleaning problem is a bit strange. Normally, a dvd should play just fine even if the disc is not in perfect condition. Just look at the discs you get when you rent a dvd. Often full of scratches and fingerprints, but still plays ok. However, I have also encountered the same problem with new discs a couple of times, and if there are no technical flaws, it seems like a gentle cleaning sometimes does the trick. If you use a cloth, just remember to use a really soft one and gently wipe the disc from the center and out in a straight line, never circular. |
