View Full Version : Strange side effects of painkillers?
Kay Scarpetta 07-15-2004, 07:28 PM Heyyyyy everyone, got a quick question. I'm on Tylenol with Codeine for my shoulder, but it doesn't really help pain wise. All it does is knock me out and make me have the strangest dreams. Last night I slept on the couch, and when I woke, I was hallucinating that there was a guy in my kitchen. Has this kind of thing or similar ever happened to anyone?
So today I told my PA that it wasn't really helping me, and he gave me a prescription for Vicodin. It's stronger for my pain, but I don't know if it's going to knock me out and make everything weird again. I should do some research on the internet or something...
If you guys were on any kind of painkillers, what were you on? Any suggestions? Have you ever had strange dreams or anything induced by medicine?
God, maybe it's me, maybe I'm just strange
dawsongirl 07-15-2004, 08:05 PM I've never been on a painkiller long enough. But Paxil does occassionally give me strange dreams. Not hallucinatory, but bizarre...and recurring. And I wake up thinking they're real a lot more than I used to.
Kay Scarpetta 07-15-2004, 08:58 PM anyone else? I'm desperate for answers here, guys

Well... since you're desperate, I'll bs my way through this topic.
I wasn't going to post because it's never happened to me with painkillers or any other drug. But like Cathy, I have known people to have strange dreams while on Paxil. I don't think it's unheard of for it to happen with Tylenol with Codeine either.
You may just have had an adverse reaction to the Tylenol with Codeine for whatever reason, and Vicodin might give you a completely different reaction. It's not uncommon to be knocked out with painkillers if you're knew to them, so Vicodin might do that to you too. It's a different drug than the Tylenol with Codeine, of course, so I would try it. You may not have any problems with weird dreams. And it might not knock you out either.
dawsongirl 07-15-2004, 09:26 PM Check out www.webmd.com too. They have a drug database. It probably says something about side effects.
Although everyone is different. I've never seen anything on Paxil and Benadryl not playing nice, but damn...one night, I took it and I couldn't sleep to save my life. I felt like jumping off the walls.

Kay Scarpetta 07-15-2004, 11:33 PM Thanks so much guys! I appreciate it, really. Unfortunately, I can't get my Vicodin filled until tomorrow morning, so I'm stuck with the Tylenol w/Codeine for tonight. :(
Janice 07-15-2004, 11:36 PM Watch out for that Vicodin Karly...very addictive. It's a narcotic. I'm sure it will be fine for a while though.
Sorry to hear you're still in pain. Get better.
Last winter, I had a really severe cold, and the doctor prescribed Robitussin with Codeine (aka the best cought syrup ever).
Pretty much all I did those three days was sleep. And yes, I did have some crazy dreams.
As far as Vicodin goes, what Janice said. :) Feel better soon.

That sucks. :( If you take the Codeine for tonight I hope it doesn't give you too much trouble...
When you've had the Vicodin, let us know how it worked out. I'm hoping you'll react just fine. Plus... it's usually better for pain anyways. :)

Yeah... my mother really didn't want me on the Vicodin, because of the high risk of addiction. Lord knows, that's all I need right now. Another addiction. But I'm keeping an eye on myself.
And thanks ;)
