Has there ever been in the history of movies or TV a more perfect,
funnier, or appealing couple than Dick Van Dyke and Mary Tyler Moore
in the history of movies or TV?
I honestly don't think so. (In fact the best acting teams are usually two men.) But what man and woman were ever better than these
two? They always talk about Tracy and Hepburn but I don't think they were anywhere near as appealing
or sparked better acting from each other than these two. They were better than anybody. Try ranking your favorites. My others would be
Tom Hanks/Meg Ryan, Redford/Fonda,
Gary Cooper/Jean Arthur, and maybe
John Steed/Emma Peel. But I really
think DVD/MTM were the best man/woman acting duo of all time.
Who was better?

I'd hate to say that there is but...there is. Fred and Ginger of course! But Mary and Dick have been compared to Fred and Ginger!

I'd say Lucy and Desi too, but Dick and Mary looked like they truly liked each other and that comes across on the screen positively every time. :)

Personally I think that Mary and Dick looked more like a couple then Lucy and Desi. When I first started watching TDVDS, I thought that Mary and Dick were really married. I watched ILL for years before I found out that Lucy and Desi were really married.

I can definitely see where it might not look like Lucy and Desi were a couple in the later seasons of ILL. The romance was pretty much gone by then (both in real life and on the screen.)

Both Mary and Dick admitted to having crushes on one another and it reflected on screen. But I agree that Lucy and Ricky weren't really as believable. Carl Reiner once said that in ILL, Ricky never "catered" to Lucy. I'm not saying that Rob was Laura's slave boy, but he was one of the sweetest husband ever.

My dream husband looks a lot like Rob. I might even make him watch TDVDS so that he can see how a woman wants to be treated. ;)

I agree they actually seemed like a happily married couple on the set and off but they weren't off. Lucy and Desi's marriage failed though but it never showed on the set of the show it looked like they were happy but... :(

I think the two best couples on television were: Rob and Laura Petrie and Darrin and Samantha Stephens (Though only with Dick York's Darrin)--Bewitched had some very romantic episodes and York and Montgomery had great chemistry together in these shows. Yes, Ricky and Lucy in the early seasons of I Love Lucy would qualify as well. The single most romantic episode in the history of TV (in my opinion) is the show where Lucy tells Ricky that they are having a baby and then Ricky sings "Were Having a Baby My Baby and Me" to Lucy while both of them are crying very real tears of joy. Later seasons you just don't see as much romance between Lucy and Ricky--though I love the first Lucy-Desi Comedy HOur in 1957 where Lucy and Ricky single there passion for one another with drums!!

I would say Lucy and Ricky Ricardo from I Love Lucy. Both were very much in love with each other in the series and they were a cute couple too!

Elizabeth Montgomery and Dick York
were a very good couple. Both were
talented and they actually made each other better. I was disappointed that other actors have said she liked
Dick Sargent better. She slacked off
and was NEVER as good working with him. So, maybe true feelings don't
count as much as acting chemistry when teaming up. Desi and
Lucy really were a top couple and they did improve each other. Chemistry worked. But she and Vivian
Vance were sometimes very nasty to each other and yet had great acting
chemistry. So I don't know. Fred and Ginger had great chemistry but it wasn't really GREAT acting was it?
I don't think Dick and Mary reached
the depth of feeling of being sad,
or longing, or drama that some
couples show (I guess I'm thinking
of Tom Hanks saying "Don't cry, little shop girl" and Meg Ryan's
"I wanted it to be you" while
Harry Nilsson sang "Over the Rainbow"
at the end of "You've Got Mail") but
those feelings don't usually show
up on sitcoms. It's a more even flow.
But I still think average scene for
scene no couple was ever better,
nicer, cuter, or more appealing than
Dick and Mary. But I really love
that Tom and Meg scene. Gee, that
was touching.

My favorite TV couple is Sam Malone and Diane Chambers from Cheers. Although they weren't married, they sure burned up the small screen for 5 years. They had great chemistry, and were quite funny as well.

I agree with you JanLady617 even though they didn't always get along you could tell that they truly loved each other and meant a lot to each other.

I think too that Diane and Sam had
great chemistry. Or really it's Danson
and Shelley Long. They really lifted
each other. Just fantastic. Their peaks
were maybe the highest ever on TV. Really
touching, wild, funny, and dramatic.
She's a fantastic actress and it really
raised him too. But Rob and Laura were
more sane and likeable (to me anyway)
at more times. I read once that a producer of Cheers said they saw that
relationship as ending in a murder suicide but knew they couldn't end it like that. Sam was sometimes sane and the voice of reason, and she was sometimes
annoying, but she deserved better than him. Rob and Laura deserved each other.
But it's hard to disagree if you think
Sam and Diane were the best. Apples
and oranges. And two fantastic acting
teams. And Shelley and Mary are both incredible. The two best ever.

Rob and Laura Petrie was a couple that was believable and can easily be pass for being married in real life. They were in the 60's believable like Steven and Elyse Keaton of Family Ties were in the 80s. The Keaton's look as though they can be married in real life. I heard Meredith Baxter Birney's comment on her on screen husband that she could not have played that role with any other actor within the exception of her real life husband, David Birney at the time. In real life DVD and MTM had some serious issues in their personal lives but on screen they put some chemistry that makes people want a marriage that great.

Lucy and Desi for sure. Not only were they appealing and cute, but sometimes the screen sizzled with their passion. At times they would lock lips at the end of an episode in a way that actors who were married to other people would *never* dare to do. Ai yai yai!

Somehow I always knew Lucy and Desi were married in real life and was shocked when I learned they were divorced. I was even more shocked when I learned they stayed in close touch (and in love) all those years *after* their divorce, until Desi died, even though they were both married to other people.
