Hrm...a quick glance leads me to hope that A) John Ritters gets the Emmy and B) Joan of Arcadia gets a few and shakes things up. I don't think either are likely to happen, though, the Academy is really into the same old, same old.

Once again, though, I find myself seriously wondering why HBO/Showtime are considered right along with the broadcast networks. Pay-TV and broadcast are two very different animals and it has always seemed unfair to me that the two are lumped together in one awards show.

Quality acting and storytelling, I think, is gonna be the same whether on broadcast networks or premium cable. Profanity, nudity and maybe violence is the only difference. Broadcast networks may have to bow to advertisers in terms of how far they're allowed to push an envelope, but I don't think it's a given that broadcast networks can't compete with premium cable programs if the material is good enough.

And it is a heck of a difference. Sex In The City is known for what? SEX. No broadcast station could have aired the series; TBS has to edit the episodes down to be able to rebroadcast them. And The Sopranos is all about the whacking and the swearing. Not a chance that could air on CBS.

And as for quality writing and storytelling, HBO doesn't have to worry as much about advertising, ratings, commercials, etc, etc, as the broadcast networks do. Reality TV is replacing scripted shows because it gets ratings -- it doesn't have to be quality. HBO is able to pump out quality programming because people are paying extra to see their shows. Nobody is paying anything extra to see FOX or NBC. Hence, crappy reality shows that millions will watch.

Wow, a good list for a change.

I am very happy to see John Ritter and Bonnie Hunt nominated. Hunt is very deserving and so is Ritter. I hope ABC is kicking themselves for the axing of "Life with Bonnie."

I think it was a given Joan of Arcadia would be nominated a lot. Thank god Friends, & Sex and the City won't dominate next year... Arrested Development SO deserves to win.

I'm pretty happy with the nominees this year I might actually watch. I did watch some last year.

Well, maybe she doesn't hate them, but she definitely doesn't seem to care much. This show totally went to her head. When she was on GH, she signed autographs, kept in touch with her fans, gave updates, etc. I mean, I obviously don't expect her to keep in touch with every single person (though I used to talk to her on AIM back when she was still on GH), but she does nothing now...

I obviously can't speak for Ms. Tamblyn but I would think that switching from being part of an ensemble cast on a soap opera to the lead actress on a network television show would drastically reduce the amount of time you can use to interact with your fans.

It may reduce her time, but I don't think it's a very good excuse. There are many lead actresses who still take the time to do such things.

John Ritter was a good name to hear, but i can't help but feel that he stole someone elses spot. I thought that Matthew Perry would get in.

Great that Kristin Davis got her first nomination ever.

Its sad that Lisa Kudrow and Courtney Cox did not get nominations this year.

Jason Bateman, Mary Steenburgon, Kelly Ripa and Reba McEntire are names i'd have liked to see. but i'm pleased overall.

I would have loved to see Newlyweds: Nick and Jessica get nominated for Reality Show-Non-Competition. but its ok at Least Queer Eye and The Apprentice each scored nods in thier categories.

Ok yeah, the AIM thing is obviously NOT what I was going for.

That is what I meant. People who are much more famous than she is still do all these things. And as for the "hating" thing--we autograph collectors don't take it lightly when people start sending preprints! :mad: Luckily, I got two autographs from her when she was still signing. With all of that said, I would still like her to win.

If AmTamb is not treating fans like she once did it can only be attributed to not having as much time as she once did. She was only a supporting player at "General hospital" and at JOA she is carrying the show. that brings w/it a lot more resposnsobility and she simply may not have the time. don't take it too hard.

John Ritter is going to win for 1 reason.... he's dead. Alliyah got more things when she was dead than when she was alive. I'm not saying he doesn't deserve it, it's ju8st that that will be the main reason he'll win.

Well, obviously someone from HBO is gonna win cause SATC and Deadwood both have 11 noms and Angels In America (is that HBO?) has 21 noms! HBO has 124 noms altogether!

Not really since its her first nomination. The Susan Lucci comment would imply a streak of loosing. if thats what you meant it applies more to Cynthia Nixon or Kim Catrall both who have mulitple nominations.

I meant more from SATC or the Sopranos. No offense since you like SATC, but it seems like they get nominated no matter what. Especially the Sopranos.

well, the only catagory I am really pulling for it in is Best Supporting Actress. Sarah Jessica Parker has always been the marquee name for the show and has gotten her share of recognition, but it's always been Kim, Cynthia and Kristin that really gave the series it's backbone, and none of them have ever gotten any due recognition for their work on the show, so I'm pulling for all 3 of them (tho especially Kim Cattrall), Doris Roberts and Megan Mullahy can both sit back and let someone else win this time, LOL.

Even though I like a few reality shows.... my interest is fading.

My thoughts:

~ John Ritter is a comedy legend and a physical comedy genius. Having said that, and no offense to anyone, but I didn't see anything in the 3 8 Simple Rules episodes he was in this season that would merit an Emmy win. It's wonderful to nominate him as a rememberance and display of gratitude and respect but in all honesty, he should not win.

~ Wonderful to see a newcomer show and actress like Amber Tamblyn and Joan of Arcadia as well as Arrested Developement... maybe it's the beginnings of a movement towards a more fair nominating system than the same ones every year

~ Of all Friends to be nominated, I do not think Matt LeBlanc and Jennifer Aniston were the best choices. Especially not Jennifer (but she DID deserve her win in 2002, she just wasn't that great this season)... I think David Schwimmer actually had the strongest year of all of them

~ Will & Grace is long past the point where it should still be getting nominated

~ Interesting that Ray Romano is the only cast member not nominated from Everybody Loves Raymond... could it be that his wishes to move on from the show are showing up on screen?

~ Once again, the best drama on television, American Dreams gets no recognition whatsoever

Bonnie Hunt's nomination is the only one in the top 10 fields (series, lead and supp acting comedy/drama series) that I have any interest in. I'm just not a fan of Sopranos, S&TC, Raymond etc. John Ritter wouldn't have been nominated if he were still alive today. The nominees in these fields are lilly white (where are The Wire performers, Penny Johnson Jerald and Dennis Haysbert from 24 and CCH Pounder from the Shield? Pounder is the best supporting actress in any drama series today IMHO.) Oh well. At least there are other awards to honor people. Emmy isn't the only game in town.

I wish people would stop saying that. We don't know that. John could have been nominated if he were still alive. IMO he's one of the most underrated actors, and IMO he deserves this nomination.

well, the thing was... 8 Simple Rules is not the type of series that the Emmy people usually award. Most of the people saying this ARE PEOPLE WHO POST ON THE THREE'S COMPANY BOARD, so it's not like they dislike JR, just stating that 8SR is usually a show that gets snubbed by the Emmy people, and also the fact that 3 episodes (tho we all know it wasn't his fault he only appeared in 3 episodes) was not enough appearences to be voted as Best Actor, that they should give him a special lifetime achievement award instead.

I see what you are saying, but am I thinking of someone else, or didn't John get a nomination for 8SR last year or the year before? I could swear I remember him being nominated for 8SR, maybe it was the first year of the show?

A nomination is very nice.

But as BuffySlayer79 stated.... 3 episodes is not enough.

All the actors do is submit like 2 or 3 episodes to be judged on anyways, so why can't 3 episodes be enough? Most actors can win with just one small scene that's really good.

I just feel that its not fair to the actors who worked nearly 10 times as long.

This would be entirely different if John were nominated last year, but he wasn't.

I think this is just a way of honoring him, which should be seperate from "Best Actor"

John was nominated three times for Three's Co. 1978, 1981 and 1984. He won it in 1984. John was also nominated for Hooperman in 1988.

One episode is enough for a nomination, in fact one episode is that does it. When John won in 1984, he won it for the episode "Cupid Works Overtime." I don't know which episode he got the nomination for 8 Simple Rules yet.

Although.... John deserved it more last year than now.
None of his 3 Season 2 episodes were really stand out performances, whereas I remember a few Emmy-worthy Season 1 performances.

Well normally when they make a Susan Lucci comment they are refering to the fact that someone had multiple nominations and lost all of them. Since Susan Lucci was nominated 19 times before finanlly winning the Daytime Emmy on Friday, May 19, 1999. Since Kristina Davis is being nominated for the first time i'm not sure it counts. Whereas Nixon and Catrall have both been nominated several times over.

people say that, but still... 18 episodes of Friends is STILL more than an entire season on HBO, Showtime, USA, FX or any of the cable outlets. People acted like the cast of Friends got so lazy over doing just 18 episodes, but that's still 5 more than we get on any of those channels a year

I'm glad John Ritter was nominated, but my favorite show is Monk so I'm rooting for Tony Shalhoub.

Nope. Melrose Place never got a single nomination in its 7 year run. And rightfully so as much as i LOVE Melrose Place it simply was not emmy-worthy. And Kristin Davis was just awful on Melrose Place, she really hammed it up.

Melrose Place DID NOT get critical praise. it did get a lot of attention, but not praise, theres a big difference. MP is not the type of show the critics normally praise. In its hey-day MP was on the cover of many magazines and got a lot of attention and great ratings but it was never really critically praised. It didn't get nominated because it was over-the-top and just bizarre, i loved it but its not the type of show that gets major awards. in fact just about the only thing ever praised about MP was Heather Locklear who got MANY Golden Globe Nominations in her career.

And i could be wrong but Dallas and Dynasty got a lot of nominations in their time. In fact i think Dynasty holds the record for show with the most nominations without winning a single award. Soap operas were big in the 1980s and got some nominations. Add to that Knots Landing which got several nods in its time.

The only dramas getting major nominations in the early 1980's were Hill Street Blues, St. Elsewhere, Lou Grant and Cagney And Lacey shows that were rarely ranked.

As for Melrose Place, I stand by what I said. I read possitive reviews of the show in newspapers and in TV Guide praising the show and urging viiewers to give the show a chance and this was before it got all the headlines. It was not long after Heather Locklear joined the show.

I'm not saying that the show never recieved positive attention. i know it did. but thats a far leap from being a critically acclaimed show that deserved emmy awards.

I'm not a big fan of The Emmy's anyway. I haven't really watched a whole show in 15 years. All the shows that get nominated for the most part I don't like especially in the comedy category. The Drama category is a little better but its still the same shows for the most part. In my opinion if a Critic or in this case critics say a show is good than that is critical acclaim. But then I never really carred what they say. They might guide me to watch a show initially but I make the decision if I like it. I more or less agree. I like a lot of the older emmy winning shows. I can sit through episodes of almost all the best comedy series nominees up to the mid80s, but these current shows are not my cup of tea at all. The dramas aren't all that thrilling to me at the moment, but I'd agree they are a bit better than the sitcoms. If I were stuck visiting a boring friend and he had the TV on I'd rather watch the dramas like 24 or CSI than Will and Grace or S&TC. Sopranos' subject matter turns me off.

As for the critics they like what they like based upon their lifestyles. I'm still waiting for someone to explain to me why Mary Tyler Moore Show is considered the best comedy of all time and I'm looking for an explanation other than "great writing, great writing", I'm looking for specific details. I occasionally watched Seinfeld but not much even though I liked it more than a lot of other 90's comedies. I liked MTM but it wasn't the best comedy ever. I still give that to All In The Family. The Dick Van Dyke Show was also very critically liked but even though it was okay, I was never that wild about it. In fact I liked DVD in Diagnosis Murder better. I agree with you about Arrested Development. I have tried to give it a chance because everyone says its the best new comedy out there. I just don't like it and don't find it funny.

Don't these awards come out this weekend? I have to admit that I haven't been keeping up with the nominated shows and I don't know which episodes the actors from the series are competing for so I can't accurately predict who will win what, but a few off the cuff comments:

Best comedy: I've never seen Arrested Development, but the way the critics are raving over it and the fact that Ron Howard is so well liked I would not be surprised if it wins although no freshman series has won this award since 1988

lead actor comedy: I dunno. John Ritter was well liked and all, but his series isn't an emmy magnet. Maybe Kelsey Grammar or another win for the guy from Monk

lead actress: I don't know what the consensus is on Sarah Jessica Parker's acting skills, but this is her last chance to win for this role. Bonnie Hunt's show isn't up for a lot of awards like the others so I don't think she would win.

supporting actor: Jeffrey Tambor seems like the winner

supporting actress: Kim Cattrall? Doris Roberts has won 3x in a row. I suspect Catrall will win instead

I don't know if writing and directing were already given out at the technical awards

drama series: The Sopranos never wins and the West Wing always wins even though I have read nothing but commentary on how West Wing has declined. Maybe 24 will win instead and Keifer Sutherland could win best actor

lead actress drama: Edie Falco?

supp actor and actress drama: I've never seen Deadwood so I have no opinion on those performers. I wouldn't be surprised if Drea deMatteo wins since her profile in the industry is very high at the moment and that almost more so than raw acting ability helps people win these types of awards.

Congrats also to the Amazing Race, which proved that it's still the best reality series on the air. I was ecstatic when it won, and it got a very nice round of applause from the audience. Maybe it's not permitted, but I would have thought they would have plugged the season finale on Tuesday

another funny thing, except for Alison Janney, all the major acting awards went to shows that are no longer on the air (The Practice, Fraiser and Sex And The City)

Bodes well for some variety at next year's awards. With SATC, Frasier, Friends and the Practice gone and probably no new Sopranos episodes within the eligibility period, there should be a few new nominees next time around. Though I can see Everybody Loves Raymond getting some farewell nominations, possibly NYPD Blue along with West Wing if this is the last year for that show too. I hope SFU's Michael Hall gets a nom, and I think Kiefer deserves a win for 24 already.

From what I understand.... The Practice isn't a big name with Emmys.

Im glad The West Wing lost. Frasier keeps it record of 5 years as Outstanding Series.

Also.... I loved the "finale" montage.

I'd think Joey has a better chance at nomination than George Lopez. Maybe a strong year for Bernie Mac. He missed out on the actor nomination this year.

I've never desired to sit through an episode of West Wing. For those who have, is Alison Janney such a phenomenal actress that she deserves to win 4x? All the photos I have seen of her clutching her emmies show her with this shocked look on her face.

A lot of this year's winners were a long time in coming: Sarah Jessica and Cynthia Nixon waited 6 years, The Practice ran 8 years before a lead player won, Sopranos waited 6 years to win best series and Michael Imperioli has been waiting a while. Frasier's regulars had a 5 and 6 year gap in between wins, which is very rare in these awards. Except for Carroll O'Connor in All in the Family I don't think anyone else had such a long gap between winning for the same role in the same show.

All in all I am not shocked by any of these winners, some were unexpected like Cynthia Nixon, but none were shocking. Shocking would hsve been Mariska Hargitay and CSI winning top prizes.

Well Allison Janey has been nominated almost every year for like the past 5 years, has won 4 times, Sex and the City is nominated almost every year, and hasn't Cynthia Nixon won before? I though SJP did too?

Frasier is nominated ever year.......

I assume you never watched George Lopez, because it is smarter, funnier, and more witty than the 2 lame Joey episodes so far.

Sarah Jessica Parker and (I think) Kim Cattrall have won Golden Globes for the show, but it is the first time Sex won any acting Emmy's.

Which is kinda sad as season 6 was the worst season and that's the year Sarah finally wins for.

I wasn't talking about my opinions on those particular shows. My post had to do with what I'd think Emmy voters would likely select. But concerning your assumption, yes I've seen the George Lopez Show.

Not to bash her work, since I have never really seen her perform, but when I think of the West Wing and Alison Janney I think of Martin Sheen as the lead actor and she and all the others as supporting players. I guess some roles in some shows are a bit arbitrary and can be nominated in either category.

if I recall correctly, Martin Sheen is actually given the "and Martin Sheen" credit... so he is not THE lead, tho one of the more important parts

Is Janney billed first in this show or are the actors besides Sheen listed in alphabetical order? The way the emmies nominate her you would think the show is more about her role than Richard Schiff, Bradley Whitford and the other players, besides Sheen.

The AND STARRING credit at the end can be for either someone who is considered a second lead like William Daniels in St Elsewhere or Veronica Hamel in Hill St Blues or the most prominent or highest paid supporting player such as Marla Gibbs in the Jeffersons or Tom Bosley in Happy Days.

One interesting note about billing orders in main titles (someone correct me if I am wrong as I only watched Dallas a few times) but I remember Larry Hagman's name appeared in alphabetical order not first or last, yet he was clearly the lead player and eventually the highest paid one in that cast.

That's correct. I think that even though JR was the breakout character, they still considered the show an ensemble show. For their entire runs, "Dallas," "Knots Landing," and even Lorimar's shorter-running soaps "Flamingo Road" and "Homefront" credited their cast in alphabetical order. I know that neither DLLS, FR, or HF, used "and" for the last person, but I'm not sure about KL's openings. I know for the first opening they used (1979-1981), they didn't use it (Joan Van Ark, one of the show's biggest and most important stars, was credited last for most if not all of the time she was on. Her last name is Van Ark so she was last).

Aaron Spelling's "Dynasty" and Lorimar's "Falcon Crest" used credits that showed the order of importance of the characters. I think a season after Joan Collins joined DYN, they put into action the long-running "and JOAN COLLINS as ALEXIS" credit at the end of the sequence. FC used "and SUSAN SULLIVAN as MAGGIE" at the end of theirs.

Spelling's "Melrose Place," however, used a combination of both. From 1993 to 1999, Heather Locklear, clearly one of the most popular actresses on the show, was credited as a "SPECIAL GUEST STAR." She recieved the "HEATHER LOCKLEAR as AMANDA" credit too. When Locklear first joined, she was really just a Special Guest Star, but the ratings sky-rocketed and she stayed with the show, but the credit stuck.

Heather Locklears credit stuck because it was a contract perk. Since she was undoubtely the star of Melrose Place they had it in her contract that she got a billing that would stand out from the toher cast members and the "And Special Guest Star Heather Locklear As Amanda" credit was born.

On 90210 when Luke Perry returned he too got billed as a special guest star it read "And special guest star Luke Perry as Dylan".

I haven't watched this awards show in years. I think that the nominations are boring but there is a bit of unpredicatability to who actually wins, more so than the Academy awards. The minute the Oscar nominations come out you can see the winners a mile away. The grammies are omewhat less predicatble depending on the category and the competition and I don't follow the Tony awards.

Very few of the show's I watch ever win and this year none of them did.

West Wing, Sopranos, Will and Grace, Sex and The City, Raymond, Frasier, The Practice have been dominating these awards for years. The last time I was happy to see something win was 1998 when The Practice won best drama for the first time and it wasn't a big hit as yet and wasn't stale and Andre Braugher, Christine Lahti, Gordon Clapp and Camryn Manheim all won series acting awards for the first time. To me the guest winners are more interesting than the people who win in the regular categories.
