View Full Version : The 40 Worst Sitcoms Of All Time---Unbiased and ranked by merit
About a year ago, I published on this site a list of what I considered to be the greatest sitcoms of all time, ranked and rated in a logical, unbiased manner, considering such options as length of service, its position in the ratings, the number of Emmys it received, and where it placed on the "Jump The Shark" scale. If you don't remember, the eventual winners, chosen from almost 200 sitcoms from 1951-2003 were " Cheers", "Frasier", "The Simpsons", "Mary Tyler Moore", and "MASH". Those shows were at the top of the list. The following thread will concentrate on those that were at the bottom.
In ranking each show, the point system worked like this:
1. Years on the air: number of seasons X 10 + number of episodes.
2. Year end ratings: 20 points for a #1 series, 19 points for #2, etc.
3. Emmy Awards: 25 points for each Emmy Award won in each major category (Best Series, Acting, Writing, Directing).
4. Jump The Shark: Number of episodes - the point at which a show jumped. Ex: if a series had 200 episodes and it 'jumped' at around Episode #150, the formula would be 200 - 150.
Now before I present the final list, I have to make a slight adjustment. For point #1 I decided to count only those series that ran for more than 100 episodes, for a few reasons. First, if I counted all the sitcoms that aired for a couple of years or less, it would take me a very, very long time to figure out where they belong. Besides, some of them were very good, like "The Honeymooners", while others still enjoy a wide audience in syndication, like "Gilligan's Island", "The Partridge Family", and "The Monkees", to name a few. Some folks love them, others hate them, but people will still watch them no matter what. Under this system, "The Honeymooners" would rank in third on the list, and even its most severe critics would have a hard time believing that the show is really that bad. So with that in mind, I present to you my official Top 40 (or should that be Bottom 40) list:
1. MY FAVORITE MARTIAN
2. CHARLES IN CHARGE
3. BLOSSOM
4. WEBSTER
5. LOVE AMERICAN STYLE
6. STEP BY STEP
7. HANGIN' WITH MR. COOPER
8. THE DORIS DAY SHOW (1968-73)
9. THE HOGAN FAMILY
10. TOO CLOSE FOR COMFORT
11. FAMILY AFFAIR
12. FAMILY MATTERS
13. FULL HOUSE
14. GOMER PYLE USMC
15. DHARMA AND GREG
16. THE FRESH PRINCE OF BEL-AIR
17. AMEN
18. THE PATTY DUKE SHOW
19. GOOD TIMES
20. OZZIE AND HARRIET
21. WHO'S THE BOSS?
22. HEAD OF THE CLASS
23. MCHALE'S NAVY
24. GIMME A BREAK
25. THE JOEY BISHOP SHOW
26. DENNIS THE MENACE
27. THAT GIRL
28. SPIN CITY
29. THE BRADY BUNCH
30. BECKER
31. MR BELVEDERE
32. I DREAM OF JEANNIE
33. KING OF QUEENS
34. GROWING PAINS
35. RHODA
36. THAT 70S SHOW
37. MR ED
38. 227
39. ELLEN
40. DOBIE GILLIS
As I mentioned before, some of these shows I actually love, like "Family Affair" and "The Brady Bunch" and it saddens me to see them on here, while many of them are well-deserved in my opinion. I've also counted 5 sitcoms on here that I've never seen before, so I have no idea of how good or bad they really are, including #1 pick, "My Favorite Martian". How bad could it have been to find itself ahead of such worthy losers as "Charles In Charge", "The Hogan Family", and most of ABC's TGIF lineup from the 1980s and 1990s. I'll leave that for you to decide and debate.
EmoJoe 07-14-2004, 02:50 PM Full House?
I Dream Of Jeannie?
Growing Pains?
Whos The Boss?
The Brady Bunch?
The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air?
Family matters?
Family Affair?
:eek2:
Dean Winchester 07-14-2004, 02:58 PM I agree with most of the list besides Ellen
Some people here may like Full House, but you gotta realize FH is to sitcoms what a movie like Ace Ventura is for cinema; it might be funny, it might be cute, but it is NOT good, there's a difference between good and entertaining. Britney Spears has some music that is entertaining, but it is not good in any sense of the word.

I'd make an exception for Ellen and take it out of the list since it was such a groundbreaking show.

Nighthawk76 07-14-2004, 03:27 PM Charles In Charge IS NOT one of the worst shows of all time!

I always wonder:
If its such a bad show than why did it last 8 years?

It lasted so long because people were entertained by it. But just because something is entertaining doesn't mean it's good quality.

I didn't say it was BAD. I just said it isn't good IMO. FH is a cute and entertaining series. But there's a difference between that and "Good". A "good" series is something like Cheers/Frasier, MASH or The Simpsons, the type of show that is more than just entertaining, but actually award-worthy, whereas a show like Full House is just entertaining, but not something you'd ever expect to be up for a "Best Comedy" Emmy. You can like something yet realize it's not a good series, tho you like it. I can admit that Facts Of Life was cute and entertaining, but NOT something that is Emmy-worthy. Shows, movies and music can be good for different reasons. I may prefer Madonna's debut album to Ray Of Light, but I accept the fact that in all actuality, ROL is technically a superior album.

But if entertains people so much that it can last over 5 years then how can it be so bad to be put in the top 40 worst sitcoms?

well, this list was about cheesy, right? FH was a cheesy show, regardless of how entertaining it may have been

That's what I'm wondering too. It makes no sense to call this list the worst sitcoms of all time when there aren't even series that ran for less than 100 episodes included.

I wondered about that too. But I suppose the list only deals with sitcoms that didn't fail right away.
Dean Winchester 07-14-2004, 04:08 PM well, every show on this list was successful. It was shows that ran over 100 episodes, so to last 5 seasons (which most shows hit their 100th episode somewhere around season 5), ratings have to be decent.
How many sitcoms have run over 100 episodes? I'd say there's been maybe 100-150 at the most (does someone like Pavan have a list?). Sal compiled points through stuff like Emmys, ratings, and also where fans of the series generally agree the show "jumped the shark". When you count stuff like Emmys, this list isn't too surprising, as these were shows that while audiences may have loved them, critics DIDN'T.
the guy who compiled this list said there are shows on here he loved, but statistics he used placed them so low

tvfan0101 07-15-2004, 09:16 AM The problem with this list (or any list like it) is that none of the criteria have anything to do with a sitcom being horrible or bad.
A good show can be on for a very long time or be cancelled after a short time; the same can be said for bad sitcoms.
Length is not a factor.
Neither are ratings. Everyone knows that ratings have very little to do with the quality of a series. How else would you explain reality TV? I would imagine even people watching the stuff would admit it isn't very good, just entertaining.
And don't get me started on Emmy Awards. The same shows, the same Emmy, over and over again. It is rare for shows that are deserving to actually win; shows that have won before are more than likely to win again and again until they end.
The fact that "jumping the shark" is included is just laughable. The "jump the shark" notion is, by definition, biased by the fact that it is subjective and opinions will differ.
And really, I know that the originally poster mentioned that ranking sitcoms that were under 100 episodes isn't feasible, but can any "worst sitcom" list really be complete without My Mother The Car or The Ugliest Girl In Town?

Because ABC believed in the show. Notice how Full House was a complete flop in the ratings in it's first few season but ABC still renewed it. It was in a way a safe show for them. Was it a major priority to them? Probabaly not as they had Roseanne at the time which was their #1 show for six seasons followed by the equally successful Home Improvement. Also Full House had a lot of younger viewers something the more popular Roseanne and Home Improvement might've lacked.
barwars 07-15-2004, 03:50 PM I like about half the shows on that list.... but I understand when they're considered some of the worst.
But you cant possibly make a list like this without including short lived shows.

Of TV Show Analyzer's list of worst shows, these are the ones I like. Some I even love. The ones in bold are the shows I LOVE.
And as for "Full House", I happen to think it's a great show. I don't include it in my top ten or anything. Back when I was younger that was the show to watch. I couldn't wait til Fridays so I could watch it. Now I watch it and think alot of it's corny. But I still manage to find some very funny jokes in there. I think Danny, Jesse and Stephanie were the funniest characters in the show. However, I do agree with some others that "Full House" is on a different level as some other shows. It, in my opinion, goes with Saved by the Bell, Small Wonder and The Brady Bunch.

I agree for the most part. I was a pre-teen when Ful House was in it's heyday, so of course I loved it. Looking back on it, it's like "what a cheesy show!!!", but still, it did have it's funny moments. With Full House, I think it's about youth. If you liked the show as a kid, there's a chance you might enjoy certain moments as an adult. But it's not something that if you hated it as a kid, you'd like it any better as a grownup.
I think what makes people make so much fun at FH is because what it's responsible for.... unleashing both Bob Saget (who wasn't so bad on Full House, but was about the all-time most unfunny comedian on AFV) and the Olsen Twins onto the world.

I'll agree with AFV. He wasn't funny on that show. As for the Olsen twins, I only liked them in "Two of a Kind." I think that John Stamos is a naturally funny guy. He was great in "Theives." But like all the other shows I watch in their original run, it was cancelled way too soon.
Another thing about Full House that my older sister and I always laugh at (In making fun of the show) is when the final scene comes and they play the serious music while the family members learn a lesson.

Full House did reach number 11 one year, and the top 25 a few times, so it couldn't have been a total flop that was on just because some ABC exec wouldn't cancel it.

Same here. I watched this show when I was 12 and I still watch it 12 years later. And I still enjoy it. Like Adam said, I now see a lot of the things they did as more corny now, and I see what an insufferable brat Michelle was toward the end and how that ruined the show...but I still like it. I still love SBTB too. And it's corny just like FH.

Friends hasn't won that many emmys, in fact they've been snubbed more often than not, I would say Fraiser, ELR, and SATC are the ones who monopolize the emmys.

well, explain why a show like Arrested Development, which is under #100 in the season rankings was nominated for Best Comedy?
the reason Friends has Emmys is, whether you like it or not, it was a decent show. I don't care too much for MASH but I understand why it has so many Emmys. Just because you don't like a series doesn't mean it's not any good. I don't care for West Wing but I will admit that from the episodes I've watched, it was very well-written and can understand why Emmy people like it.

exactly! Friends won once, in a season which most Friends fans considered to be it's renaissance season. It's not like it won 4 or 5 seasons. I know it's very fashionable to bash Friends, but even if you don't like the show, I don't see why that'd be one people would single out, considering a lot of people loved it, as well as critics who wrote it off at first came to embrace it's charm. Is it the best sitcom of the past decade? hell no. But does it deserve the scathing and beatings and comparisons to shows like Full House it gets? No way.
I do think S&TC has deserved it's Emmys tho, even tho it's unfair Sarah Jessica Parker has always been the one to win for the show, when I think it could be argued that Kim Cattrall was who made the show what it was. However, to label it among "Best Comedy Series" this year as a joke, as any fan of Sex can attest, the show became a freaking drama in it's last season.

Totally agree w/ what you said about Friends. but just wanted to point out that Sarah Jessica Parker has NEVER won an emmy. She has won Golden Globes and possibly SAG. but never Emmy. In fact Emmy has never given any SEX girl the win. In supporting actress Catrall and Nixon have been beaten by ELR's Doris Roberts and Will and Grace's Megan Muhlelly every time. Kristin Davis just got her first nomination this year. In fact the shows Emmy track record isn't that great either. its only won Comedy Series and Tech nods. never won an acting award.
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0159206/awards Here is Sex and The Citys complete award coverage.
Sarah Jessica is the most hyped and overexposed of the sex cast but shes never won an Emmy.
Of all the shows the dominate emmy i'd say Everybody Loves Raymond and Will and Grace are the worst offenders. ELR seems to win no matter what kind of year it has. Patricia Heaton, possibly the worst actress on tv right now wins even with a tape where she has very little to do. All she does is scream and shriek the entire episode (every episode) about how shes right and Rays wrong and she gets emmy after emmy after emmy. Doris Roberts hasn't shown range or sbutley the entire run of the show and she has not 1, not 2 but 3 Emmys and 4 nominations for ELR.
And Will and Grace is nominated every year. even if it had a bad season. Sean Hayes and Megan Muhllely used to be funny but their characters have become such cartoon characters that its almost sad yet they still get nominations.

And Will and Grace is nominated every year. even if it had a bad season. Sean Hayes and Megan Muhllely used to be funny but their characters have become such cartoon characters that its almost sad yet they still get nominations.
I agree on both counts. I have never been a regular ELR viewer, but I've seen a couple shows, and each time, I was waiting for Patricia Heaton to impress me since they make it out like she's this amazing comedic actress, I didn't see it. Jack and Karen used to be hilarious but now they're just doing the same jokes they did 3 seasons ago, it's boring.

well, explain why a show like Arrested Development, which is under #100 in the season rankings was nominated for Best Comedy?
the reason Friends has Emmys is, whether you like it or not, it was a decent show. I don't care too much for MASH but I understand why it has so many Emmys. Just because you don't like a series doesn't mean it's not any good. I don't care for West Wing but I will admit that from the episodes I've watched, it was very well-written and can understand why Emmy people like it.
Did I say strange things don't happen? It's great that the Emmy committee opened their eyes and looked past the top ten.
Yes, Friends was decent, but I don't think it deserved all the Best Comedy noms it got. It was cookie-cutter a lot IMO. It only stood out because so many people made a huge deal out of it.

Friends hasn't won that many emmys, in fact they've been snubbed more often than not, I would say Fraiser, ELR, and SATC are the ones who monopolize the emmys.
Fine, I was wrong, but you get my point. Replace Friends with Will and Grace, a show that certainly does not deserve a Best Comedy nom this year.

Exactly.
I think Scrubs deserves it more.
or Friends or Frasier.

True, I hate how so many shows can monopolize the emmys :(

It's like with the Yankees.... people hate them because they win so much.
Not because they suck.... but because they're good.
Im in luck.... I happen to like shows the Emmys love.
(and the ones they snub)

I don't really hate the shows that get nominated, I just hate how they can monopolize the emmys, even if they have had a sucky season they get nominated. I mean almost the whole freaking cast of ELR got a nomination but Ray Romano

If it weren't for Ray Romano and Patricia Heaton.... I would like ELR.
But their voices make it unbearable.
So.... I agree with your anger there.

Maybe next year another show will get a chance.

if every character from ELR died in a car crash... EXCEPT Doris Roberts... I'd be a fan of the series

I'm surprised Frasier and Friends didn't get more this year, like "farewell" nominations. Oh well, I just hope S&TC wins for Best Supporting Actress, I can care less about the rest.

Which is weird.... because as a fan of his, I honestly dont think John Ritter wouldve gotten a nom if he hadnt died.

I was but also wasn't surprised about that. The only thingI don't get is why he'd be nominated as a "Best actor" when he only lived to appear in 3 episodes this season. I think if anything, the Emmys should make a Lifetime Achievement Award and have Amy Yasbeck and Jason Ritter come up and accept it for him.
