I have only seen the pilot to Mayberry RFD and that had Andy marrying Helen. This show ran three seasons so it must have been good i just have never seen it. The latter epsidoes on the Andy Griffith show are alright and Ken Berry is good on F-Troop, but is it the same with out Andy and Opie?

....the center of of "MAYBERRY R.F.D." was Sam Jones {Ken Berry}, trying to raise his son Mike {Buddy Foster} and deal with the town and his friends. There are some good episodes, and just as much warmth and dramatic moments as on Andy's show. But, once in a while, Andy's long shadow hangs across the entire series...............

I really liked the show and the theme, the show did teach moral lessons. I wish they would hurry and put the show on dvd, hopefully when they finish the Andy Griffith show season sets.

I got the American Life channel and have been watching it every Sunday. It is a very nice show.

I agree with you on this. I love Mayberry R.F.D. Just as heart-warming and innocent as Andy's show. Ken Berry was a good choice.

I haven't seen the show in years, since a local station used to show the reruns back in the 70s, but from what I remember it was pretty good.

Hi Matt! I'm Sheri from JoAndra's TGIF Gilligan's Island group. How are you? Nice to see you here. I adore Ken Berry as Sam Jones in Mayberry R.F.D. and Captain Parmenter in F Troop as much as I do Russell Johnson as the Professor.

Hugs,

Sheri

Hi ya, glad to see you are doing better. I remember you saying you were having some problems last year.

I've been here a while-lol I need to stopy by TGIF more. I posted something a few days ago, but that was the first time for months

Ken Berry was good in just about everything he did. He was a very underrated actor.

I've never did see this show. It apparently stopped airing before I was born. I watch Andy Griffith Show all the time and I love it! To me, Mayberry RFD wouldn't be as good without Andy, just as the Andy Griffith Show wasn't as good without Barney. It may have been a good show and I may have liked it if I had ever gotten to watch it, but it just wouldn't be the same and it would seem really odd without Andy.

I thought Ken Berry was great and underrated too.

I'm a huge fan of Arlene Golonka ("Millie") so this show is essential to me. I got to see most episodes about 12 years ago -- just great!

I watched this show when I was a kid, but I don't remember too much about it. I know some of the characters from Andy Griffith Show transferred over - Aunt Bee, Howard, Goober, and Emmett. I was just wondering where Aunt Bee was living at this time. Was she still in Andy's old house?

she moved in with Sam Jones and Mike and was their housekeeper.

Fun Fact: The actress who played Romeena, Ernest T Bass' love interest in "My Fair Earnest T Bass" was Ken Berry's wife in real life.

The two seem made for each other

Did Ernest T Bass appear in any episodes of Mayberry RFD? How about the Darling family?

Bass (Howard Morris) did not appear on RFD.

The Darling Family as such did not appear on RFD -- however, beginning with the final season of TAGS, Maggie Peterson ("Charlene Darling") appeared as totally different characters: "Doris" (on color TAGS Season 8) and "Edna" (on RFD).

The final Darlings appearance had been in Season 7 of TAGS, their only color appearance.

A lot of Andy Griffith Show fans complain and have been for fifty years now that the color episodes were not near as good as the black and white episodes and I concur with that. RFD was basically the color episodes without Andy Griffith.

Ken Berry to me was an okay actor. I don’t think he had that much range or maybe he did but his career went the way it did because of his choices. However the man was one of the best dancers ever, basically Berry was to dance was Michael Jordan was to basketball. He did amazing things. He did a bit on Carol Burnett Show I saw once where he pivoted his left foot and glided across the stage with me going “How the “bleep” did he do that?” I have tried with socks and a smooth wood floor to copy that. Nope.

I thought an opportunity was missed with respect to this show. Rather than growing the series, the producers seemed satisfied with just replicating the final three seasons of The Andy Griffith Show. There is certainly justification for doing exactly that, like it or not The Andy Griffith Show in color without Barney was still a massive hit. But in taking that road, RFD never developed into a series of its own. I think RFD might have survived the rural purge if it had become its own show. The series needed to add another comedic character and gently push the envelope a bit with respect to plot development. Remember CBS greenlighted The New Andy Griffith show for early 71 as a midseason replacement for Headmaster, suppose that show had worked, it would have been running at 8pm Friday nights instead of the dead on arrival series "The Chicago Teddy Bears". If RFD had been a better series maybe CBS would have given it a chance in that same timeslot that The New Andy Griffith Show would have been running in.

It's a charming show but it's not the big laugh powerhouse that the first five seasons of TAGS. I don't fault Ken Berry, RFD runs at a slower pace.
