I wouldn't call Amanda Bynes one of the most popular actresses on Primetime tv. First of all her show is very LOW rated and second of all shes is hardly known to anyone over the age of 16.

Now for my list- In No Partiuclar Order.
Jennifer Aniston, Friends
Debra Messing, Will and Grace
Patricia Heaton, Everybody Loves Raymond
Kelly Ripa, Hope and Faith
Marg Helgenberger, CSI: Crime Scene Investigation
Edie Falco, The Sopranos
Alison Janney, The West Wing
Jennifer Garner, Alias
Jamie Gertz, Still Standing
Lisa kudrow, Friends

#1- Paris Hilton IS NOT AN ACTRESS. shes in a reality show. she is simply being filmed.

Heather Locklear is not currently on a show. althought her new show LAX debuts this fall.

Amanda Bynes- See comments in above post.
Its Mischa Barton not Mischia and shes not one of the most popular actresses on tv, her shows only been on for 2 seasons and its only a minor hit.

And its Marg Helgenberger, not Marc Hangelberg.

It doesn't matter Amanda Bynes was NEVER one of the most popular actresses on tv. her show is low-rated, on the wb and shes not even that good. Also shes not that well-known at all, unless youre 16 and read Tiger Beat and listen to old Nsync cds.

Good list except for ANGELA WATSON? WTF? How can you say shes one of the most popular actressess ever? Step-By-Step was never a ratings smash, never got critical acclaim and never got nominated for a single award. And If anyone from that show was considered "popular" or deserves a place among the best ever its Suzanne Somers, but she'd get in for Three's Company. step by step was nothing on the tv radar.

I thought Angela was one of the prettiest actresses to grace the small screen. My choices are based on my personal observations and have nothing to do with ratings or what critics say.

you can tell how much times have changed and how we need some good new series.

even 2 years ago, the top 3 tv actresses at the time have all since walked away from the job, and all 3 were far better than Paris (Jennifer Aniston, Sarah Jessica Parker and Sarah Michelle Gellar would've been the top 3 even in 2002)

well, that was just James' opinion. If you wanna get technical, it's also way too soon for Amber Tamblyn to be on the list, Joan Of Arcadia's only been on for 1 season and it's ratings are about the same as Step By Step was in it's heyday.

But, those were his favorite actresses on tv

True, but the list was called "The Most POPULAR actresses on primetime tv" so the list was misleading. If it had been called "My Personal 10 tne" thats one thing, but he called it "the most popular" which implies that he was going by ratings or critics or something.

Well the tv season just ended so Jennifer wouldn't be off just yet. Also he said it was from "last year" which is odd since The Simple Life 2, Hope and Faith and other shows on the list WERE NOT ON TV LAST YEAR (2003).

I was thinking of Friends as being current until NBC reruns end.

How does Jennifer Garner count as one of the top 10 most popular? Alias isn't even a top 20 show. And where are the Six Feet under ladies?

well, Jennifer Garner is popular. Ratings don't mean anything, Sarah Michelle Gellar was certainly in the "top 10 most popular actresses on television" when Buffy was on, and that series was never a ratings goldmine. I think Jennifer Garner certainly belongs up there, Alias is a huge cult show, which accounts for something. Plus, the filmmakers see enough "Star appeal" to cast her as leads in movies, I certainly think she deserves to be on this list more than Mischa Barton does.

I think popularity is more about impact than ratings.

i.e., Yes Dear scores higher ratings than The OC, but I think most people would say The OC is more popular. It's all about demographics. Shows like 24, The OC, Alias, Charmed and the sort keep scoring well with their intended demographics, so they keep coming back, while a show like Yes Dear, which scored very very well, but just disapointing compared to it's competition on the same night, got the axe.

Dawson's Creek and Buffy never finished higher than #100 in the season ratings (WB/UPN just never gets those kind of ratings), but yet both series, especially Buffy, made huge cultural impacts that even if they weren't scoring Friends-like ratings, people like Katie Holmes and Sarah Michelle Gellar were both still considered television superstars.

So IMO, if you're in a show that is #80 in the ratings and everyone's talking about you, it's probably better than being a timeslot hit in the top 25.

Yeah and thats why pratically every new show launhced on the WB and UPN in the past 3 years (with the exception of Everwood, One Tree Hill and Americas Next Top Model) was CANCELED in that same season.

well, the WB has new ownership, and the new owner SUCKS. He is responsible for canning Angel despite it's best ratings to date, and I wouldn't be shocked if Charmed (which is supposed to go 2 more seasons) gets canned after next. The golden age of the WB was certainly 1997-2001, then they got a new chairman who started getting rid of all the good shows and picking up shows that suck.

Well maybe there were some BUSINESS decisions behind the cancelation of Angel and other shows. ever thought of that? i'm sure he or she wouldn't just cancel a show for no reason there must have been a LEGITIMENT REASON for the cancelations. But you do strike a good point. I may have been a little hasty in calling Jennifer Garner "unpopular" but one of the top 10, i'd doubt it. But you must realize that no matter what being on a show in the Top 25 is still better than being on a show in the bottom 100.

there wasn't. Joss Whedon and David Boreanez were both very pissed off at WB for axing it, even tho it scored it's highest ratings ever in the 2003-2004 season. The final episode of Angel was very half-ass basically as Joss' way of giving the WB the middle finger for helping put the WB on the map, and then they decide to cancel Angel to make way for Dark Shadows... which wound up not getting picked up for the fall schedule. Whereas, on the other hand, Dawson's Creek and Buffy The Vampire Slayer ended because the casts decided it was time to move on, whereas the cast and crew of Angel felt it still had a few seasons left.

Personnally, Im not a fan of Angel (SciFi's never been my thing).... but it definately got the shaft.
As you said Buffy/Angel gave The WB an audience.
Sure it wasnt huge.... but it was devoted.

Well maybe their was a reason not disclosed to the public and perhaps the media has distorted things a bit. a network is not going to cancel a show for no reason. there has to be a reason.
