What is your all-time favorite episode of The Dick Van Dyke Show and why?

"It May Look Like a Walnut" (I think that's the proper title), a wonderful sendup of one of my other favorite programs, The Twilight Zone, and the movie Invasion of the Body Snatchers. The scene with Laura sliding down the cascading walnuts is a classic.

The one where Richie discovers his middle name is Rosebud-and Rob explains why.The revelation that it was an acronym is a classic, and there was a slight reference to Citizen Kane after all!

My favorite episodes are It May Look like a Walnut and the one when Rob thinks he is going bald and Never Bath on Saturday.

Tough to make a choice, but I'd say my favourites are "Ghost of a Chantz", "Offensive, Egotistical, Etc." and "Uhny Uhtz". Hope I got the names right! There were so many that were absolutely great.

It's the one where Laura gets her big toe stuck in the bathtub faucet -- funny! It's the only time you ever see her toes, I think. She sometimes walks around barefoot in the bedroom, though.

That would definitely have to be "Racy Tracy Rattigan." Richard Dawson just cracks me up! The scene at Rob's house when Tracy is flirting with Laura, then Rob pours champagne over his head is priceless. It was just on an hour ago and I was so happy!!

I love Ghost of A Chantz and Offensive, Egomaniac etc. but my real favorite, for whatever reason, has always been The Great Petrie Fortune where Rob and Laura find a photograph of Abraham Lincoln in the old roll top desk Rob's great uncle left him. There are some very funny lines and great dialogue in the episode.

Oh God...so many to choose from!! Here are my faves: "Coast to Coast Big Mouth" "Laura's Little Lie" "Curse of the Petrie People" "Bank Book" "My Blonde-Haired Brunette" "Curious Thing About Women" The list really goes on and on! LOL Basically, I tend to prefer the domestic episodes of the series to the more office centered ones (No offense to Rose Marie, Morey Amsterdam or Richard Deacon!) It just happens I'm a Mary fanatic!! LOL

In case anyone is still reading this thread, let's not forget "Long Night's Journey Into Day" where Laura stays home alone while Rob goes on a fishing trip. CLASSIC!

LoL, that was a good episode. I love it when Millie comes back and sees Laura in the bathroom, they both start talking and then Laura says "I'm glad you're here" but the way she cried as she said it made it even funnier.

I'm not certain of the title, but my favorite episode is one in which Rob falls asleep in the Dentist's chair (Jerry's), and dreams he's a sheriff back in the old west. He gets involved in a gunfight with "Big Bad Brady" (Carl Reiner). I believe this was the next-to-last episode in the series. A lot of great one-liners!

Christine0079

That was called "The Gunslinger", it was the last DVD episode to air.

Actually it was the last to be filmed, and therefore in reruns it's the last to be aired, but originaly it was aired second to last on May 25, 1966. The Last Chapter was the last episode, aired on June 1, 1966.

I don't know the title of this episode, but one of my favorites is the ep in which the FBI is staking out one of Rob's neighbors and uses Richie's bedroom as a base from which to spy...Rob tries to act real cool with the FBI agent, and ends up acting real silly...e.g. The FBI agent uses a lot of acronyms and abbreviations for things, and Rob tries to get in on the act by calling binoculars "binocks" (pronounced "binn-knocks', accent on 2nd syllable) and "binos" (rhymes with "Rhinos"). I thought he was just hysterical in this one...

Also, another favorite is the one in which Rob thinks that they brought the wrong baby home from the hospital...this ep had one of the greatest surprise endings of any episode in the history of any sitcom, maybe THE greatest!

One thing about the DVD show is that, IMO, there was never a "bad" episode (although personally, I think Carl Reiner could be pretty annoying when he was on the show).

Oh yeah...thought of one other ep which, with the two above shows, would round out my top three fav eps of the DVD show...

The episode in which Laura opens Rob's mail all the time, and he ends up sending a package home just to see if she'd open it...and it turns out to be an inflatable raft... I LOVE that episode!!!

Now that I've seen all of them, I'd have to say my favorite was "Long Night's Journey Into Day" when Laura and Millie are alone in the house and keep hearing things. I could watch that episode over and over and still laugh every time.

there are so many classic episodes. The three I love most are:
"Ghost of A. Chantz", "Coast to Coast Big Mouth", and "Alan Brady Presents"--the Christmas episode--I always love watching that every Christmas when TV Land does the marathon of Christmas shows. The part of that episode I like most is when Dick and Mary are dressed as Santa's and do the song and dance--they worked so well together!!

yea, I like that scene in that episode, too. (I said scene, not the entire episode. I don't like that) I've alway thought it funny, though, because it's a 22 minute version of an hour-long variety show. (a half-hour show is only on for 22 minutes.) Back then, it was about 28 minutes)

Chuck, off the top of my head I would be hard-pressed to name another one that I like more than any of those three.

And for the record, I too love watching the Christmas episode and think the Rob/Laura routine is the best part of that particular show.

There are so many :) , but I really love "The Curious Thing About Women", where Laura can't resist opening a package and it turns out to be an inflatable boat  and I also like "Pink Pills and Purple Parents", where Laura hosted a dinner party for Rob's parents after taking too many pills. I think Mary Tyler Moore is brilliant! :) I also love "The Blonde Haired Brunette".

My favorite episodes:

I AM MY BROTHER'S KEEPER (March 21, 1962)/THE SLEEPING BROTHER (March 28, 1962)

Featuring the very funny Jerry Van Dyke as Rob's shy, sleepwalking brother who can only perform when he's asleep.

MY HUSBAND IS NOT A DRUNK (Oct. 31, 1962)

A post-hypnotic suggestion makes Rob act like he's drunk whenever he hears a bell. An excellent showcase for Dick Van Dyke's many comedic talents. I saw this episode practically repeated almost word for word on "Perfect Strangers", where it's Balki who pretends to be drunk, but it couldn't hold a candle to the original.

IT MAY LOOK LIKE A WALNUT (Feb. 6, 1963)

A classic episode where Rob has a nightmare where he's being invaded by people from space (like Danny Thomas!) who only eat walnuts and want to cut off his thumbs!

DON'T TRIP OVER THAT MOUNTAIN (Feb. 20, 1963)

Rob returns home from a ski trip with bruises and bandages over his whole body (from tripping over a goat!), and he has a hard time hiding them from Laura.

THAT'S MY BOY??? (Sept. 23, 1963)

Rob and Laura flashback to Richie's birth, where Rob became absolutely convinced he had the wrong child, until he sees the other child's parents in a truly brilliant scene. A true masterpiece from beginning to end.

COAST TO COAST BIG MOUTH (Sept. 13, 1965)

My favorite episode, and one that needs no introduction. Laura accidentally blabs Alan Brady's biggest secret on a TV game show, and the TV legend of Mary Tyler Moore is born. This is about as close to perfection as a show can get!

Favorite episodes, Ghost of A. Chantz, The Masterpiece

Ghost of A. Chantz is a very funny episode. The Masterpiece has a spooky feel to it when he spots the other painting beneath.

They will never get our favorite episodes on a set of DVD's without placing the entire series in order. Most of us have different episodes that we call our favorites. Although I'm sure there are a few of our worst episodes that we could agree on!

I found a favorite to add to my list as well. I recently saw "A Show of Hands" and realized how funny it is! I love when Sally says she has beer and eggs in her hair, and Rob asks why. Sally's like, "I was attacked by a bootleg chicken!" That was just one of those lines that cracked me up!

I have loved just about every episode they made. This show was a "feel good" type sitcom, mainly because the writers gave the public the characters by developing them so thoroughly. We really got to know all of them so well that we felt that we knew them intimately. As far as episodes go, I loved the haunted cabin one, the walnut one and the "Uhny Uhnts", I believe that is. But the one that made me giggle all the way through was the ep where Rob and Laura's parents were both fighting over who would be buried where...everyone had a cemetery plot to give to the Petrie couple. Mory Amsterdam and RoseMarie were in top joke form in this ep..."Buddy's" crack about writing a script for Alan about cememtery plots where he stated, "We could have Alan going into a supermarket to the frozen foods department and asking for any empty boxes" was a complete screamer and the way Sally was jabbing at him to shut up had me howling with laughter! There was also an episode where Laura had to spend her first night alone in her house...I believe this may be the one where Rob and Jerry go skiing...where she's jumpy over every little noise, she had all of the lights on, the radio and tv going - this one, I identified with, since I did this myself when I spent my first night alone after being married! But I've loved them all. This was a "comfort" show, since, though being a mythical situation, you could still identify with the characters and since the writers saw fit to take us so deeply into the charactersm themselves and maintain these same characters on a realistic level. This was the best show ever, with the best writers and a cast that jelled<sp> so well. Long live DVD!!!!!!!!!!!!!
