I bet Guttenberg comes back for this one.

Another 'Police Academy' in works

New film would be eighth in series
Thursday, July 8, 2004

"Police Academy" has been a successful comedy franchise.

LOS ANGELES, California (Hollywood Reporter) -- "Police Academy" is back. After a decade's absence from the big screen, the cop comedy franchise is gearing up for an eighth installment.

"I felt it was time to start again," said series creator Paul Maslansky. "I saw that 'Starsky & Hutch' and a number of other revivals were doing really well. 'Police Academy' has such a great history. I thought, 'Why not?' "

According to Maslansky, who will serve as an executive producer, the talent from the first seven features has expressed a keen interest in the revival, with Maslansky looking to combine both new and the "original talent" for the next "Police Academy."

"We became very much like a family," he said. "It's is very unusual to have seven films with virtually all the same major cast."

The project is being developed by Warner Bros. Pictures and its Australian joint-venture partner Village Roadshow. The project is out to writers, with the exact direction of the newest installment yet to be determined.

The most recent sequel in the franchise was "Police Academy 7: Mission to Moscow" in 1994. The first "Police Academy" hit screens in 1984, bringing in a domestic box office take of $81.2 million. Then it was a film a year through 1989, with "Police Academy 2: Their First Assignment" released in 1985, "Police Academy 3: Back in Training" in 1986, "Police Academy 4: Citizens on Patrol" in 1987, "Police Academy 5: Assignment: Miami Beach" in 1988 and "Police Academy 6: City Under Siege" in 1989.

Altogether, the franchise brought in more than $230 million at the domestic box office. Maslansky also serviced the small screen with "Police Academy: The Animated Series" in 1993 and "Police Academy: The Series" in 1997.

Didn't each episode of the live action tv series last almost as long as each of the movies? There were only like 9 eps though. I didn't realise Police Academy was only from 1984- how did they make sequels so fast?!

I'm not sure I like the idea- combining new and old talent could end up with a 'Saved By the Bell: The New Class' sort of film- which wouldn't be good at all!

:yippee:

I can't wait to see it whether there are some original actors from the previous ones or not. I own all of them on vhs but I am planning on getting them all on dvd soon.

Great news. Proctor and Captain Harris are the funniest. I wonder what they'll do about Tackleberry, since David Graf passed away a few years back.

Great news indeed. I have the Complete Police Academy DVD box set that came out a few months ago and there is a brand new making-of documentary on all 7 installments. Everyone looks good. George Gaynes looks exactly the same as he did 20 years ago. Lance Kinsey (Proctor) has gray hair now. I wonder if the sales were good for the DVD box set. That may be one of the reasons why they're doing another movie.

didn't Guttenberg leave at the end of the 4th movie because he was a star at the time and he thought his career was really going to go onto better things, and then he faded away to nothingness

I think 7 Police Academy's are enough. I didn't know they made 7 of them. I saw 6 of them & part 6 sucked. I think the best one is part 4 Citizens On Patrol. When Steve Guttenberg quit after the 4th one, that's when they got corny. Part 5 on Miami Beach wasn't that bad. I like Michael Winslow too. He's the black guy who always makes those noises with his mouth.
