TWENTY YEARS AGO

With the leadoff single from the sixth album of his career, Purple Rain, Prince scores his first number one pop hit with "When Doves Cry". It hit the top in only its sixth week on the Hot 100, and is partly responsible for keeping Bruce Springsteen from ever scoring a number one hit, as "Dancing In The Dark" remained at #2. When Doves Cry would spend a total of 5 weeks at the top and 21 weeks on the Hot 100, becoming Billboard's single of the year for 1984. The top ten, and other notes from Billboard's Hot 100 chart from July 7, 1984:

1.When Doves Cry - Prince (Last week - #3)
2.Dancing In The Dark - Bruce Springsteen (LW - 2)
3.Jump (For My Love) - Pointer Sisters (LW - 5)
4.Self Control - Laura Branigan (LW - 4)
5.The Reflex - Duran Duran (LW - 1)
6.Eyes Without A Face - Billy Idol (LW - 8)
7.Time After Time - Cyndi Lauper (LW - 7)
8.Almost Paradise - Mike Reno & Ann Wilson (LW - 10)
9.Heart of Rock n' Roll - Huey Lewis & The News (LW - 6)
10.Legs - ZZ Top (LW - 13)

Legs was the only new entry in the top ten, it replaced Deniece Williams' "Let's Hear It For The Boy"

Making the biggest move up the chart was "She's Mine" from Steve Perry (up 17 spots from #53 to #36)

Making the biggest drop was "Break-a-way" by Tracey Ullman (down an even 30 spots from #70 to #100)

The highest debut on the Hot 100 was Billy Squier's "Rock Me Tonite" (#51).

The oldest songs on the Hot 100 were both ballads that previously hit #1: Phil Collins' "Against All Odds" at #53 and Lionel Richie's "Hello" at #62, each spending its' 20th week on the chart.

Ugh, this message board is making me dislike Prince.

well, I'd say when you consider the amount of posts to threads... Prince isn't discussed 1/10th as much as Clay Aiken, Diana DeGarmo or Evanescence are in here.... I think Prince certainly has a much much bigger and richer musical legacy than those 3 do. I could go on for hours talking about Prince with Vashti and Tvje, I couldn't last 1 minute discussing Clay or Diana or Amy Lee.

Prince isn't the only older artist who people fawn over in here, what about the four lads from Liverpool? how many posts have there been about them in here?

My intuition told me before I even posted this that someone would make a comment like this. In reality, I think I've shown restraint. I'm such a fan, I'd have no problem posting a new Prince topic for every day of the week, but I've decided against going that far. That's why I mentioned other things in the post, so that it wasn't all about Prince. But if a post like this is all it takes to make you dislike a particular artist, that says more about you than anything else.

Forewarning: future threads I plan on posting:

When Doves Cry and Let's Go Crazy in the top 10 simultaneously

Purple Rain album hits #1

Purple Rain movie premiere

Start of Purple Rain tour

Prince blows his nose

Prince buys a new pair of boots

Prince sends his purple trench coat to the cleaners, etc.

But thankfully those Diana DeGarmo, Clay, and Amy Lee fans amazingly manage to post everything in one or two threads, they tend not to borderline "spam" like others.

The Beatles threads can also get overwhelming sometimes, but at least the person who posts those is straightforward and makes it clear that the thread was going to be Beatle related. The only reason I knew this thread was going to be about Prince was because: 1. 1984 (the year he peaked,) 2. Posted by Vashti.

If this is an argument against my thread, I'm not quite sure where you're going with it. By your own admission, you knew going in that it would be Prince related because I'm the one who started the thread. In that case, maybe you should have just ignored it if it was something that would potentially bother you. There are tons of threads on these forums where the topic of the post isn't exactly expressed in the subject heading (which isn't the case here), so I don't get why this one seems to bother you so much. But anyway, thanks for the threadcrap.

I remember this like it was just the other day. The only song here I really like is the Pointer Sisters' single. I'm no Prince fan (Diamonds and Pearls is the only song he sang that I like) but my whole neighborhood in Brooklyn was wild for him at this point in time. When Doves Cry was the top song of the year on both the hot 100 and the r&b list, but the album ranked rather low on both lists, I think it was like in the 20s on the pop chart even though it was one of the biggest sellers for the year. The next year it was #9, so one of the biggest selling albums of the decade was underrepresented on the year end tallies.

I like every single song on the list, even tho I am kinda tired of "Legs".

I don't think pop music has EVER been better than it was in 1984. That was a watershed year for pop music like 1964 and 1991 were to rock.

I agree. I don't know if maybe I was hypnotized back then, but I liked 85-90% of whatever hit the top 40 from the early to mid 80's.

50 Years of Rock - The worst songs of great rockers: Diamonds and Pearls - Prince

Article from Palm Beach Post:

Right now, it's good to be Prince. But I'd like to go back to 1991, when his Royal Badness released this tepid, lazily written ditty of lurve. Can you explain why the genius who penned the brilliant line "I guess I should have known from the way you parked your car sideways that it wouldn't last" was reduced to pap like "If I gave you diamonds and pearls, would you be a happy boy or a girl"? Ugh! It makes me cranky!"
