It was used in Cocktail. https://www.sitcomsonline.com/boards/showthread.php?t=327670 Music is timeless. The thread received more replies when it was bumped up than it did originally. This was a good bump. It seems silly to start a new poll every two years. People are more inclined to reply to active threads. I don't see how trying to generate some activity is a bad thing. stevea 05-23-2025, 12:35 PM I probably would have voted for Kokomo, but I'll vote for Margaritaville in memoriam. I'll give honorable mention to one not in the poll, Key Largo by Bertie Higgins. opus 05-23-2025, 12:35 PM It seems silly to start a new poll every two years. TJ 05-23-2025, 12:48 PM The reign of Zoneboy is over!! I like him. He's a good moderator. He's kind of a stickler for the rules. I could understand some of them if this section was way more active. JamesG is the same way on the Movies board. He used to delete new posts in threads more than two years old. Enforcing so many rules can kill some of the potential activity. Any thread which isn't locked or in an archived section is still open for business as far I'm concerned. biffbronson 05-23-2025, 04:44 PM I don't see how trying to generate some activity is a bad thing. Maybe I'll spend more time this summer wading through the resurrected 20-year-old threads, to find the more recent ones that were buried in their infancy...! A "rule" is no longer in effect, yet there it is... ;) I didn't realize music, movies and television threads have expiration dates. :) Maybe I should just start closing and archiving 400,000+ threads to keep people happy. If you've been following this board in recent years, this "rule" hasn't really been enforced. It was more of a suggestion or guideline. IMDb never had such a rule. Good luck with your search. I'm sure there are plenty of good threads which could be resurrected. I've noticed some of them get more additional new replies than some newly created threads. A good general topic from 15-20 years ago will still be a good topic today. I don't see the thread creation date as such a big deal. The thread topic and subject matter is more important. biffbronson 05-23-2025, 05:53 PM I was trying to indicate that when a slew of old threads are revived, recent ones become very hard to find. I now use the "Search" function if I spotted a recent thread I haven't yet replied to, but wanted to read or comment in. Ironically, or maybe intentionally, a thread that included a poll concerning a possible limit on the number of old threads bumped at a time or in one day is now thoroughly buried somewhere. The timelessness of music has nothing to do with the General TV discussion forum recently being turned upside down, but recent news about TV does. Obviously since it's your site, you've made a decision and there's not much more to say. I'm not stupid enough to argue with a site owner or administrator. The only thing I wanted to point out is that having to go to "Search" constantly can be an inconvenience to the user -- and that can turn them away or at least limit their activity. No one asked you to close or archive "400,000+ threads." But if I need "luck" as in "Good luck," don't be surprised if the activity you desire doesn't materialize. TJ 05-23-2025, 06:12 PM I can understand your concerns. Like you said, it buries threads too quickly. I recently changed the search results and threads per board to 100 threads instead of the default of 50. I thought it may help people find threads easier. I can't please everyone. I've tried to organize it in a way to make it easier to find threads. There's no easy way to organize 460,000+ threads over the last 25+ years that will make everyone happy. I feel like I have it organized pretty well. I feel like any activity is good at this point. The amount of posts has been steadily declining in recent years. If there isn't a decent amount of activity, then people don't have a reason to return as often. We have only maybe 100-200 members logging in on a daily basis. The only way to limit older threads from being bumped up would be to close them or move them to an archived section. There's no option in the forum software to limit the amount of new threads or replies per member per day. I've spoken to Dude111 about it in the past. I've asked him to limit it to 5 or so threads per day per board. It doesn't really help anyone when he bumps up 15-20 in one section. He needs to use better judgment when it comes to bumping up certain time sensitive threads. He shouldn't have bumped up the "Was TV better to you in 1984 or is it better now in 2004?" thread. It's only good for him to bump up older threads if it leads to more replies. |
