These are all the songs that topped the pop chart that year and what is interesting to me is that all but one performer (John Waite) was a consistent hitmaker in the 80s. No one shot wonder type acts this year or fluke hitmakers in the bunch:
Say Say Say- Paul McCartney/Michael Jackson
Owner of A Lonely Heart- Yes
Karma Chameleon- Culture Club
Jump- Van Halen
Footloose- Kenny Loggins
Against All Odds- Phil Collins
Hello- Lionel Richie
Let's Hear it for the Boy- Deneice Williams
Time After Time- Cyndi Lauper
The Reflex- Duran Duran
When Doves Cry- Prince
Ghostbusters- Ray Parker Jr
Missing You- John Waite
What's Love Got to Do With It- Tina Turner
Let's Go Crazy- Prince and the Revolution
I Just Called to Say I Love You- Stevie Wonder
Caribbean Queen- Billy Ocean
Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go- Wham
Out of Touch- Hall and Oates
Like A Virgin- Madonna
I can't think of any other year like this with no fluke acts topping the survey (there was at least one who got to #2 though- anyone remember Somebody's Watching Me by Rockwell?)
