These are all the songs that topped the pop chart that year and what is interesting to me is that all but one performer (John Waite) was a consistent hitmaker in the 80s. No one shot wonder type acts this year or fluke hitmakers in the bunch:

I can't think of any other year like this with no fluke acts topping the survey (there was at least one who got to #2 though- anyone remember Somebody's Watching Me by Rockwell?)

and didn't Ray Parker Jr lose the copyright case for Ghostbusters, so technically it wasn't even his hit, because he ripped it off ?

Depends on what you consider a hit. Top 40?

Deniece Williams had a #1 duet with Johnny Mathis in 1978 with Too Much Too Little Too Late, a top 10 on her own with "It's Gonna Take A Miracle" in '82 and hit #25 with her debut single in '77, "Free". She's had many more hits on the r&b charts.

Ray Parker Jr. had 12 top 40 pop singles, 5 of which hit the top 10, including songs billed to his group, Raydio. "You Can't Change That" and "A Woman Needs Love" are two of the more popular titles.

Billy Ocean had 11 top 40s, 7 of which hit the top ten. Caribbean Queen, Loverboy, When The Going Gets Tough, There'll Be Sad Songs and Get Outta My Dreams Get into My Car all peaked either #1 or 2.

First it was the Tina Turner song, then the John Waite song.
