For males, I think it's Frank Sinatra. Some may argue Elvis, but Sinatra was one incredible singer with stature rivaled by none.

I think Barbra Streisand is the most legendary female singer of all time.

Great list BuffySlayer, but I was looking for one for each gender. I should have been more specific.

The greatest male and female legends of all time.

hilary duff. she invented having singing voices edited on the cd's so they'll sound good and get money.

I disagree. Even on the cd, her voice sounds bad, so she didn't exactly do a good job with that invention.

Aretha Franklin is another one. In the black community Billie Holliday is considered a legend as well. These people have all taken on a life of their own that goes way beyond their music. Janis Joplin is another one, although I don't know if its because she died young of a drug overdose or her actual recordings. I don't think any of the acts who have been marketed mainly to pre-teens would qualify (Backstreet Boys, other boy bands, Britney or older acts like Monkees, David Cassidy etc) unless one of them had some sex or drug scandal attached to them or died early or some such thing. Cruel to say, but if Whitney Houston overdosed on drugs and died today she might make a list like this.

if Whitney gets her act together and goes back to making good music (as opposed to JUST WHITNEY), she could make these lists IMO

I know she was being facetious. I was just saying even with studio tricks, there's no helping Hilary Duff. I actually listened to her song So Yesterday once and couldn't believe how bad it was, wondering if someone gave her a deal outright without finding out beforehand if she could carry a note.

seems like all these Disney hacks are given a recording contract along with their movie/tv contracts there. It's a joke

I would say either Frank Sinatra or Bing Crosby.
