And as promised, here's my new fic. This takes place in 1993, before CD and Nate met.
------------------------------------------------------------------------

"I'm sorry, Nate. I really am. But this isn't working anymore," the young woman said. She was folding her clothes and putting them into a suitcase. Nate Basso tried to close the suitcase in an attempt to stop his wife from leaving. His heart had fallen to his gut, his throat had a lump in it, and he fought back tears. Even since becoming a Vice officer for the SFPD, he had never been so scared.

"W-w-why? Why can't we try to work this out?" he pleaded.

His wife stared at him with her sad brown eyes. "We both know why, Nate. We haven't been happy for at least 2 years now. We want different things. This just isn't working anymore, and we shouldn't keep wasting our time trying to force a square peg into a round hole."

Nate stood with his arms across his chest. "But we've already put 4 years into this, Molly! 4 years! And besides, I still love you!"

Mollly buckled shut her suitcase with a click. She stopped and looked at his sad face. "I love you, too, Nate. But please don't make this any harder than it is. I had to let you go a while ago. Now please just let me go, too." She blinked back some tears of her own, but a few still escaped and trinkled down her cheek. She took the pearl ring off of her finger and held it out to Nate. "Here. You can give this back to your grandma. Maybe Irene will want it someday."

"Molly, you don't have to. That's yours. I gave it to you."

"Yeah, I know. At our junior prom. I remember. But it should stay in your family."

Nate nodded, because he knew she was right. "So, this is it, huh?" he asked defeatedly.

"Guess so," she replied.

Molly started to pick up her suitcase, but Nate stopped her. "The least I can do is carry your suitcase our for you," he said. They walked in silence out to her car, and Nate put the suitcase in the trunk. "Where will you go?" he asked.

"Oh, I'm moving in with my sister for a while, until I find my own place. I'll send my dad for the rest of my stuff."

Nate opened up the car door for her, and she climbed in and sat down. "Will you at least call me and let me know how you're doing?" he pleaded.

Molly smiled. "Yeah, sure. Well.....have a great life, Nate."

"You, too, Molly," he choked out and tried to force a smile. He watched her drive down the street, off into the night rain. Raindrops showered him, but he remained there, just getting wet. "Goodbye, Molly," he whispered. Then he thought, '22 years old....and my marriage is over.'

~~~~~~~~~~
On the other side of town, 24 year old CD Dankow was making out with her fiance, Paul, on his sofa. CD started to feel a little uncomfortable, though, when Paul's hands moved beneath her shirt. "Paul....Paul, stop. You know I'm not ready for this yet," she said. Paul didn't listen, though, and kept kissing and pawing at her. "Paul, come on, stop. I mean it. I don't want to do this yet." CD was starting to get a little scared.
Paul said, "Awww, Candy baby, don't hold out on me. You know you want to."
Then CD flashed on a memory from 9 years before. It was a memory that she tried to never remember, but every once in a while popped into her head. She almost started to resign herself to Paul. Then she remembered that, after all, she was a cop. CD pulled one arm across her chest and jabbed Paul off of her.
Paul clutched his side. "Ow! Damn, Candy, what the hell was THAT for?!" he yelled.
CD started feeling guilty and doubting herself. "I'm-I'm sorry, Paul. I didn't meant to hurt you," she stammered.
"Well, you DID, you bitch! Now look what you did---I'm going to have a bruise now!"
"Awww, I'm so sorry," CD replied and hugged him. "Let me get you some ice for that."
"You'd better!" he retorted.
CD went and made an ice pack and brought it to Paul. "Well, I'm going to go now."
"Yeah, whatever," he replied and turned his attention to the TV. CD looked at him sadly, and left.
Wow, everybody, thanks for all the replies! Here's more! :)
---------------------------------------------------------------
Nate went to bed, but he couldn't sleep. All he could do was lay there and stare at the ceiling. He didn't really feel sorry for himself---he felt sorry for Molly. He knew that he could have been a better husband to her. He thought back to all the times she had begged him to cut back on his hours at work. How many times had she sked him to spend time with her, only to have him say that he had a gig or a stakeout or that he had to hang out with his buddies. He'd always thought that she would understand, find something else to do, and they would be OK. He had always just assumed that she would always be there waiting for him to come home. He hadn't listened to her warnings of their marriage being in trouble until it was too late. Nate now realized what she had been talking about---the train wreck called Nate Basso.
The next morning, Nate walked into the Vice Division of the SFPD. He knew what he had to do. He didn't even bother talking to the sergeant that he reported to---he went straight to his Captain. He paused at his own desk along the way, and took a long look at it. "Nate Basso---Officer" it read. A picture of Molly sat atop the desk. He had held her close to his heart---she was his high school sweetheart, after all. But a distance had grown between them. They had grown up differently. They had grown up, period.
'Well, it's time I grew up for real,' Nate thought and knocked on his Captain's door.
"Come in," the Captain replied.
"I....I-I have to talk to you," Nate carefully began.
"Uh huh," the Captain replied, but kept his eyes glued to the computer screen.
"And I've been thinking....now, don't get me wrong, I love being an officer and all and I'm proud of the work we do...."
"Spit it out, Basso," the Captain said.
"I don't think I can be in Vice anymore."
That got the Captain's attention. He stopped what he was doing and looked up at Nate. "You what?!"
"I just don't think I can be here anymore. I'm not cut out for it. I want a transfer to another division." Nate was scared. He didn't know what would come next, but he knew that he couldn't keep going where he was headed.
"Look, Basso....you're a great undercover officer. One of the best. Why don't you think about this some more? Maybe you'll change your mind."
"No, I'm sorry, sir, but I have thought about it. And I've decided that this job is just turning me into someone that I don't like. Someone I don't even recognize. I've turned into this hotshot, like I'm on the cast of 'Miami Vice.' All I'd need is a pink shirt and turquoise pants and I'd be ready to go. I need to go do what the other officers do. I need to have to face victims and their families. I need to see what it's like on the outside world for a change."
The Captain remained silent for a moment, thinking. "Well, if there's no changing your mind then...."
"I'm not going to change my mind."
"....then I guess I'll see what I can do for you. I'm not promising your dream job, though."
"No problem, Cap. Whatever it is, I can handle it. I just need a change."
--------------------------------------------------------------------
That same morning, CD went into work at her division, the Felony Division of the SFPD. She had started out on patrol a few years earlier, but now assisted the Inspectors and Lieutenants at
her Division. Officially, her supervisor was Lieutenant Kate McCafferty. The two had become pretty good friends, and CD always enjoyed how much she learned from her.
CD went to her desk, still obviously troubled about what had happened with Paul last night. She thought she had been so sure that Paul had crossed the line, but then with how he reacted when she kicked him off of herself, she wondered and questioned herself. She knew that he had a temper streak in him and a wandering eye, but she always reasoned that it was just talk. He was usually so sweet to her, and even when he did get mad at her, he always apologized afterward and gave her a gift. So, CD would just dismiss it, forgive him, and forget about it.
Lieutenant McCafferty had CD do some paperwork for her, so that’s how she spent most of the morning. Mid-morning, a floral delivery man brought her a bouquet of carnations, courtesy of Paul. CD looked at the bouquet and smiled. She opened the card, which read,
“Sorry about last night, Candy baby.
Let’s just kiss and make up.
I’ll pick up for dinner after work.
~ Paul”
“Awww, that fiancé of mine is so sweet,” CD murmured aloud.
That got the attention of one of her co-workers, Officer Jinny Exstead. Jinny spun in her chair closer to CD’s desk. “Who’s sweet?” Jinny asked, eyeing the carnations with a look of skepticism on her face.
“Paul. We had a fight last night, and he sent me flowers to apologize.”
“Carnations, huh? Whew, big spender,” Jinny chuckled.
“Well, we’re trying to save for the wedding. I don’t mind. It’s the thought that counts,” CD replied with a contented smile on her face.
“Oh, yeah. When is the wedding?” Jinny asked.
“December 4th. Six months,” CD answered.
“Cool,” Jinny replied. She had her own opinions about Paul DeLorenzo, but was happy for CD. She turned around and got back to her work.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Nate finished out the rest of the work week at Vice. He fortunately didn’t have any open cases that he was currently working undercover in, so he just tied up lose ends. He was looking forward to and yet nervous about his eminent transfer. It was very hard on him to lose his marriage and change jobs at the same time. He had called Molly and told her that he was getting out of Vice, in the hopes that she would see how much he was trying for her. He had a bad feeling in the pit of him stomach, though, the Molly had made up her mind, and wasn’t coming back. He knew that they hadn’t really had a marriage for over a year now, but it still hurt.

Friday afternoon, Nate began to clear out his desk. He had 2 boxes: one labeled “Work” and the other labeled “Home.” He sadly placed the framed picture of Molly in the “Home” box, knowing that he probably wouldn’t need that at work anymore. He was just wrapping up, when a man in a black suit, white shirt, and blue tie entered the Division with papers in his hand.

“Nate Basso?” he asked the room.

Nate looked up from his desk. “I’m Nate Basso. What can I do for you?”

The man handed him the papers with no expression or empathy, then turned on his heel and walked out again. Nate looked at the small stack of papers in his hands, hoping that they were not what he thought they were. Then his eyes travelled over them, and he knew the truth. He couldn’t believe that Molly would actually go through with filing divorce from him. He thought that perhaps she just needed a break, and would be back in a week or two. But with the papers that signaled the end of their marriage in his grasp, a little tear slipped from the corner of Nate’s eye. ‘He couldn’t believe that she hadn’t even told him about filing—that he had to find out from her lawyer. “A LAWYER. A damn lawyer. I find out that my marriage is being killed by a complete stranger. Well, thanks,” he muttered. ‘Been nice knowing you, Molly,’ he thought to himself.

Nate folded the divorce papers up and stuck them in his jacket pocket. Then he went to say his goodbyes to his buddies at Vice, with promises to get together again soon. Then he went to his Captain’s office. “Hey, Captain. I was just about to get going, but I just wanted to thank you again for all your help. You’ve given me so much opportunity and experience here. I know that wherever I go next, my connections and undercover work will come in very handy.”

“I hate to see you go, Basso. But I understand. We all need a change sometimes. You will be missed.”

“Thanks,” Nate replied.

“But speaking of where you go next, I have an answer for you.”

That alerted Nate’s attention, and he focused on the Captain. “You do? That’s great!”

“Yeah. I put the word out with the other Captains all over the city, and you wouldn’t believe the response. Now, this is totally up to you which one to choose, but knowing you, I think you’d like the Felony Division option best.”

Nate’s face lit up. “The Felony Division? Wow. That’ll be perfect!” Nate was actually kind of exited now. He’d of course heard about all the great work they had done at the Felony Division, and he couldn’t wait to join them.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Monday morning rolled around. CD woke up, got dressed in her uniform, and went in to work as usual. Little did she know that today someone would enter her life, who would turn it upside down.

Meanwhile, Nate also got up, put on his uniform, and headed to his new Division for work. He had been told to meet with the Captain, who would then inform him of his assignment. Nate entered the office, to find the Captain behind his desk, and a 40-ish woman with red hair seated in one of the chairs opposite the desk. Nate eye’s sized up the room and its inhabitants. He was so nervous, but took a deep breath. “Hi, I’m Nate Basso. You were expecting me?” He held out his hand to the Captain to shake, who accepted it.

“Nice to meet you, Officer Basso. I’m Captain Tom Micelli, and this is Lieutenant Kaitlyn
McCafferty.”

Nate looked to the Lieutenant, who smiled and extended her hand. “Great to see a new face here, Nate.”

“Thank you. I’m excited to be here,” Nate replied.

“Please, take a seat,” the Captain said. Nate sat down in the chair beside Kate. “As you know,
this is Lieutenant McCafferty. She will be your immediate supervisor. You job here will be to
assist her, as well as other lieutenants and inspectors in their investigations.”

Nate smiled. “Sounds great!”

“Good. Now, there are many officers here at this Division, but we do like them to have partners for their own protection. I’ve assigned a partner to you.”

Nate nodded. He’d had partners before, so it was no big deal. He just hoped that he got someone that he got along with and did his fair share of the work. “When do I get to meet him, then?” Nate asked.

“Well, your partner is actually out canvassing at the moment, but will most likely be back soon. You could go out there yourself, if you wanted to, to help,” the Captain said.

“Um, OK,” Nate replied.

“And oh, by the way.....your partner isn’t a ‘he,’ it’s a ‘she,’” Kate added with a smirk.

Nate looked at her in surprise. “Oh, OK, cool. So what’s her name?”

“CD Dankow,” Kate replied.

“CD?” Nate questioned with a curious look on his face.

Kate chuckled. “Yeah. But I’m sure you guys can talk about that later.”

Nate decided to make a good impression and go on out the crime scene that his new partner was working at to meet her, and see if he could help. He’d forgotten to ask what she looked like, so he didn’t know what to look for. The crime scene was where a child had been kidnaped, and their were uniformed officers and plain-clothed commanders swarming the area. Nate scanned the crowd, hoping to see someone who would call herself ‘CD.’ ‘This is silly,’ he thought. ‘How could someone look like a name?’ He spotted a figure, though, that made him forget what he was there for. His eyes fell upon a female officer. The tall, willowy, blonde form took his breath away. Nate lost time for a few moments as he gazed at her. Then he snapped back into reality. ‘Geez, man, you’re still married. Snap out of it,’ he thought to himself. Nate decided to go up to someone and ask if they knew who this CD Dankow person was. “Hi, I’m looking for an Officer CD Dankow. Do you know her?” Nate asked an officer.

“Yeah, she’s over there,” he replied and pointed to the blonde.

Nate knew that he must be understanding wrong. That couldn’t be his new partner. He’d never be that lucky. “I’m sorry, who are you pointing to?” Nate asked.

The officer pointed again. “The tall blonde in the uniform, over there,” he replied.

Nate couldn’t believe his ears. He swallowed hard. “Thanks,” he squeaked out. He smoothed his hair, straightened his uniform, and realigned his belt as he walked towards her. CD was talking to a witness and writing down information. Nate stopped a few feet short of her and watched her. She seemed so confident, like she had been doing this forever and had no worries whatsoever.

CD finished talking to the witness, and noticed someone out of the corner of her eye. She looked over at the person who was standing next to her. “Hello,” she began. “Are you waiting to talk to someone?” She noticed that she hadn’t seen this man around the office before, but that wasn’t unusual. There were so many police in San Francisco, that she met people all the time who had worked there their whole careers.

“Um, yeah, I mean, no. I mean.....I’m here to meet you,” Nate stammered nervously. He didn’t know why he was so nervous. He’d been doing stuff like this since the week after he graduated high school. He thought it was strange how his stomach was doing flip-flops now.

“Uh, you are? You’re here to meet me? What can I do for you?” CD asked.

“I’m, uh, here to help you. Lieutenant McCafferty sent me.” He showed his badge. “I’m your new partner, Nate Basso.” Nate extended his hand to her.

She took it and smiled. “Oh, I see. Yeah, I heard the chief wanted to get everybody partnered up around here. Something about safety, I guess,” she laughed. Nate smiled back at this beautiful woman. Even behind the uniform and her long hair being pulled back, he could tell that she was a knockout. “CD Dankow’s the name, by the way,” CD offered.

“Yeah, I heard. It’s great to meet you.”

CD couldn’t help but keep smiling. She knew that she had to get back to work, but she just wanted to talk to this guy. Not only was he easy to look at, but he had a way about him that she liked. Finally, she said, “Well, we can talk more later, but I’ve really got to get back to work here right now. There’s a 6 year old kid missing.”

“How did it happen?” Nate asked, getting out his notepad and pen. CD gave him the details that she had so far, and then they again went their separate ways to finish canvassing. Each couldn’t help but peek over at the other every once in a while, though. A feeling of suspense about what awaited them hung in the air.

Thanks for the replies! Well, I was going to post on my other fic tonight, but I left the damn notebook somewhere, and Deirdre requested more of this, so this is what you get! ;) :D
------------------------------------------------------------------

CD finished at the crime scene, and glanced over at her new partner's direction. She'd heard something about getting a partner, but wasn't really expecting it today. Still, she had to admit that she could have done a lot worse in the partner department. She wasn't quite sure how much she should involve him, though. She wasn't used to sharing her work with someone, and having to consult them and sometime submit to how they would like to do things. CD walked over to Nate. "Hey, um.....I'm done here, so I'm heading back to the Division."

Nate looked up from the work he was doing. "Oh, OK. I'll meet you there soon then."

CD smiled, nodded, and turned to leave.

Nate watched her. Then he spoke up, "And maybe you can show me around when I get back?"

CD turned as well. "Sure," she replied, and then got into her squad car.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
CD went back to the Division, to find an empty desk next to her own, which itself had been moved from its original location. 'What the hell have they DONE with my desk?!' she thought and gritted her teeth. She went over to find Leiutenant McCaffety. "OK, first a partner, and NOW you move my desk to make room for HIS?!" she demanded.
Kate sighed and looked at CD tiredly. "CD, you know that the Chief has been wanting everyone to have a partner, and that includes you. And I hate to say this, but as a woman, it's especially important for you to have a partner."
"I can't believe you would say something that sexist, Lieutenant," CD replied and crossed her arms. "I thought you were different."
"I AM, CD. But I'm also realistic. Even though we women are just as smart and able as men are, it's just not as physically safe for us out there. But even saying that, even the guys need help out there, too."
CD sighed. "OK, OK. But why does he have to have his desk next to mine? Why did you have to move my desk?" CD countered.
Kate was getting frustrated. She had so many other things that were more important to worry about, such as the child who had been kidnapped. "CD!" she yelled. That shut CD's complaining up.
"Fine. The desk can stay. He just needs to remember his place, though," CD grumbled and returned to her desk.
Kate rolled her eyes and went back to work.
A few minutes later, Nate came walking into his new Division. "Hey, I found it! Fooled ya, didn't I?" he joked to CD as he approached her desk.
CD couldn't help but smile. "Yeah, this building is pretty big, isn't it?" Then she glanced over at the empty desk across from hers. "Um, I think that desk is for you."
Nate looked at it. "Yeah, I think you're right. I'll move my stuff in there later. But, uh, first can you show me the ropes of the office?"
"Yeah, sure," CD replied. She got up and showed Nate the various offices of the Division, the interrogation rooms, the copy and fax machines, the lounge, and of course, the vending machines. They worked a little while longer on the case, until it was lunchtime.
CD felt her stomach growl and checked her watch. 'Oh, crap,' she thought. She'd forgotten the time, and she was supposed to have met Paul for lunch 5 mintues before. "Hey, Nate, listen.....I would ask you if you'd like to join me for lunch, but I'd already made plans with my fiance for lunch. I've got to get going, because I'm late already."
Nate was a little surprised to hear that she had a fiance. "Oh, OK, yeah, sure, no problem," he replied. "I'll just grab a sandwich or something, and I'll see you later."
"Great," CD said, picked up her jacket, and rushed out the doors.
'Fiance?!' Nate thought to himself.
Okey doke, I guess some people want more of this.....;) ;) This isn't much, but here's more. :D
---------------------------------------------------------------------
CD rushed across the street to the Anchorside to meet Paul for lunch. She ran inside and scanned the restaurant, and spotted Paul sitting at a window table looking rather ticked off. CD quickly walked towards the table and sat down opposite him. “Oh my gosh, Paul, I’m SO sorry I’m late.” Paul just picked up his menu and started reading it, ignoring her. CD noticed and tried to smooth the waters. “You see, I was busy working on this case, and I lost track of the time.....”
“Save it,” Paul curtly replied. “You’re late again.”
“I’m—I’m sorry,” CD mumbled.
“You should be,” Paul grumbled and glared at her..
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

‘Fiancé?’ Nate wondered. He was kind of surprised at that. He just hadn’t pictured CD as being engaged. ‘Ahh....new love. How sweet.....hopefully they don’t have the same problems Molly and I had,’ he thought to himself with a sort of sad smile on his face. ‘All the good ones are taken.’ Then Nate decided to take a break for lunch, himself. He hated eating alone, but he needed to eat, so he thought he’d just go to the Anchorside to get a burger to go.

Nate walked into the restaurant and went over to the bar. He put an order in for a burger and fries and coke to go, and then sat down on a barstool to wait. Always the curious type, his eyes scanned the restaurant for anyone he might recognize. He thought he spotted his new partner, and did a double take. He squinted. Sure enough, that was her. Then Nate looked at the guy she was with, assuming that he must be the fiancé. ‘Hmm, he’s not much to look at.....’ Nate commented to himself. ‘But he must be a great guy if CD agreed to marry him.’ Nate couldn’t hear their conversation over the buzz of the diners, but he did notice that neither of them looked very happy. In fact, Paul looked rather mad, while CD seemed a little upset. Nate just hoped that they were having a small misunderstanding, and everything would be fine again soon.

Just then, his order was ready. Nate paid the bill, picked up the paper bag and drink, and quietly left before CD could notice that he had seen them.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
45 minutes later, CD went back into work. Nate had finished is lunch, and was putting all of his desk stuff in order. “Hey, I’m back,” CD said as she walked towards her desk.
“Hey, did you have a good lunch?” Nate asked, trying to not let on that he had seen them at the Anchorside.
CD sighed. “Um, yeah, it was fine. Did you get something to eat?”
“Yeah, I did, thanks. I just grabbed a burger. The Captain assigned us to some more field work for the afternoon—we have to go investigate some leads that got called in.”
“Oh, OK,” CD replied. She sat down and stared at her desk. She appeared to be worried about something, like she was in her own little world. Nate was a little worried about her, but figured it was none of his business. Well, at least none of his business yet. Once he got to know her a little longer, maybe he’d ask, but for the time being, he decided to keep his questions to himself.
Nate stood up, picked up his black SFPD notebook, and stood by the desk. CD still stared at the blotter on her desk. “CD? You coming?” Nate asked.
CD looked up at him. “I’m sorry, what?”
“The case. We have to go check out those leads, remember?”
“Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah. Sorry. I was just a little distracted,” she replied and quickly gathered her things.
“Don’t worry about it,” Nate said and followed her out.
LMAO, Deirdre! :lol: Yeah, maybe she will later, but for now, you haven't seen anything yet! ;)
OK, I hadn't planned on posting anything more tonight, but the board is SO DEAD right now, that I just feel it's my duty or something. ;) ;)
------------------------------------------------------------------
The missing child was found late that night, due to a tip that CD and Nate investigated. The next day, they were assigned to a new case. Nate was enjoying the challenge so far of his new area of police work. It was different and demanding, but he thrived on that.
That day was very busy, so Nate and CD just had a quick bite for lunch in their police car while doing field research. Nate decided to take this opportunity to get to know his new partner better. He took a bite of his sub, chewed, and swallowed. “So.....you’re engaged, huh?” he asked.
CD’s mouth was full, so she nodded. After she swallowed, she said, “Yeah. The wedding is December 4th.”
“That’s cool,” Nate replied. “Holiday weddings are nice. My wife and I thought about having a December wedding, but decided to do it sooner because we didn’t want to mess with it at Christmastime.”
CD was surprised to hear him say that he had a wife. She hadn’t pictured someone so young and good looking as being married already. “You’re married?”
Nate grimaced. “Well....technically, yeah. I mean....we’re getting divorced, but it isn’t final yet, so.....yeah.”
CD sympathetically nodded. “I see.” Then she looked at him. “Sorry to hear that.”
“Sorry to hear that I’m getting divorced, or sorry to hear that I’m still technically married?” Nate couldn’t resist baiting her.
CD immediately and loudly replied, “I’m sorry that you’re getting divorced, OF COURSE!” She slightly smiled and blushed.
Nate tried to suppress a snicker. “Oh, OK, just had to clear that up.”
They sat in silence for half a minute, each lost in thought, until CD said, “What happened?”
Nate sighed and stared out the windshield. Even though CD hadn’t specified what, he knew what she was talking about. Even though this was only their second day on the job together, they seemed to understand each other pretty well. “Well.....a lot of stuff happened. We got married really young. We started drifting apart. My wife, Molly, saw it coming. I just acted like it wasn’t happening til it was too late.....and now, even though I’ve tried, she’s made it pretty clear that it’s over.”
CD nodded in understanding. It was obvious by how this man talked about his wife that he had really cared about her. Thoughts of her own upcoming marriage swirled in her head. “That’s too bad about you and your wife,” CD commented. “I think Paul and I are going to be OK, though, thank goodness.”
“That’s great,” Nate replied. “So he treats you right and does special things for you and appreciates you, that kind of thing?”
CD’s eyes slid over to look at Nate. “Um, well, yeah.....I mean, he’s not the romantic type, and we do have our arguments, but I know he cares about me.”
“Arguments?” Nate asked suspiciously and raised his eyebrows.
“Well, sure. Doesn’t everybody?”
“Yeah, I guess so. It’s just that there’s different types of arguments. But as long as they’re over little things, it’s no big deal.”
“Yeah,” CD replied. She stared out the window again and sucked on her straw. Little did she know, though, that someone had been watching her for the last several minutes.
“That’s great,” Nate replied. “So he treats you right and does special things for you and appreciates you, that kind of thing?”
CD’s eyes slid over to look at Nate. “Um, well, yeah.....I mean, he’s not the romantic type, and we do have our arguments, but I know he cares about me.”
“Yeah,” CD replied. She stared out the window again and sucked on her straw. Little did she know, though, that someone had been watching her for the last several minutes.
CD went home to her empty apartment that night. It had been a long day at work, and she only wanted to eat some dinner, take a hot bath, and go to bed. She walked inside in the dark, hung her jacket on the coat tree, and started to take off her holster belt. Then noticed from the corner of her eye that a light was on in the next room, which sparked her curiosity. She moved a few steps to the living room and was shocked to see Paul sitting there, smiling, on the recliner. “PAUL!” CD exclaimed. “You scared me!”
“Hey, Candy baby,” Paul replied with the same sickly sweet smile. “What, aren’t you happy to see me?”
“No, no, of course I’m happy to see you. I just wasn’t expecting you.”
“Why? Were you expecting someone else?” he inquired.
“Who else would I be expecting?” CD replied.
“Oh, I don’t know.....your boyfriend, maybe?” Now Paul was glaring at her.
“My BOYFRIEND???!!! What the HELL are you talking about, Paul?! You know I’m faithful to you! You know I’m not like that!”
“If you don’t have a boyfriend, then who was that guy that you were having lunch with in the car today?” Paul accused.
“Oh my God, please. I can NOT believe you’re seriously accusing me of having an affair. He’s my PARTNER, for crap’s sake!”
“Stop lying to me, Candy. You don’t have a partner.”
“So he’s new! What is WITH you, Paul?!”
“Nothing is with ME! I just don’t want to lose my fiancé to some donut-eating, trigger-happy COP!”
CD shook her head and sighed. ‘I can’t believe this,’ she thought to herself. All she wanted to do was spend a quiet, relaxing evening at home alone, and she was dealing with this. “Look, Paul. I’m going to explain this as nicely as I can. I AM a cop, OK? So I AM going to be working with OTHER cops, most of which are MEN, for the rest of my career! Nothing is going to happen, alright sweetie? You know I’m committed to you.”
Paul nodded. “OK.....I guess so. Give me a hug?” he extended his arms out to her.
CD smiled and nodded. “Yeah, sure.” They hugged, and CD overlooked what had just happened. She drove herself crazy always forgiving him so quickly, but she didn’t know what else to do.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Nate sat alone in his empty, dark, and lonely apartment that night, thinking. He’d done a lot of that lately. It was all too ironic to him that he used to have so much demand on his schedule when he was married, but now that he had the time for his wife again, he no longer had one. Nate stared at the phone next to him. He knew that Molly was probably still living with her sister. A feeling of loneliness came over him. Nate picked up the phone and dialed the number. On the third ring, a voice said, “Hello?”

“Molly?” Nate anxiously asked.

“Um, no. This is Maggie. Is that you, Nate?” came the reply.

“Uh, yeah....sorry. How are you, Maggie?”

“I’m OK, thanks, Nate. But I really don’t think Molly would want me talking to you.”

Nate sighed. “Can I talk to her? Is she home?”

Maggie sighed as well. “I don’t think that’s such a good idea......she’s still pretty hurt.”

“I know, I know. I’m sorry. But could you PLEASE put her on the phone? I really need to talk to her.”

“Nate, look. She doesn’t want to talk to you, OK? Could you please just let it go?”

“Please, Maggie? I’ll just talk to her this once, and if she still doesn’t want to talk to me again, then fine, I’ll let it go. But I really feel that I need to give this one more shot.”

Maggie gave a little huff. “FINE! OK, but just this once, got it?”

“Got it,” Nate replied with a feeling of relief.

He waited half a minute, and then heard a familiar voice. “Hello?”

“Before you hang up on me, just hear me out, please?” Nate quickly pleaded.

“Geez, Nate! Just leave me alone! It’s over!” Molly angrily exclaimed.

“I know, I know, it’s just.....I had to tell you something. I had to tell you that I thought about everything you said, and I quit Vice.”

--------------------------------------------------------------------

He waited half a minute, and then heard a familiar voice. “Hello?”

“Before you hang up on me, just hear me out, please?” Nate quickly pleaded.

“Geez, Nate! Just leave me alone! It’s over!” Molly angrily exclaimed.

“I know, I know, it’s just.....I had to tell you something. I had to tell you that I thought about everything you said, and I quit Vice.”

“I know. You told me before.”

“So? Doesn’t that mean anything to you?” Nate replied.

“Quite frankly, Nate, no. I mean, I’m flattered that you’ve done so much to reprioritize, but.....it still doesn’t change anything.”

Nate’s voice slightly trembled. “Why not?” he whispered.

“Look, Nate, sweetie.....I didn’t want to have to say this and hurt your feelings, but.....I just don’t love you anymore.”

Nate paused for a moment to regain his composure. “OK, well, that’s that, I guess,” he briskly and coldly replied. “You don’t love me anymore.....fine. It doesn’t hurt my feelings,” he lied. He kind of expected to be torn up inside, but all he could feel was.....emptiness. And after all those years together with Molly, he began to wonder if he even knew what love was anymore.

~ A Week Later ~

“So the judge says, ‘Considering the circumstances, I find you not guilty. But I gotta ask, what did the eagle taste like?’ And the guy replies, ‘Well, your Honor, it tasted like a cross between a whooping cran and a spotted owl,’” Nate said in the punchline of the joke he was relating to CD. They were walking down the sidewalk in a busy part of the downtown business district, on their way back from lunch. He looked at her expectantly, with a cocky smile on his face.

CD just stared him in the eyes. “And?” she asked.

“And that’s the end of the joke!” Nate laughed. Didn’t you get it?”

“Yeah, I did, it’s just......never mind, Nate,” she chuckled. “It was kind of funny, though.”

“Thanks!” Nate replied with a grin. He loved trying to make CD laugh. He hadn’t been too successful at first, but he was beginning to grow on her. So far, he was glad that he had switched to the other division, because he got CD as a partner. There was just something about her that he found intriguing and inviting. Not to mention the fact that she was blonde and leggy and hot. Nate had to keep reminding himself that she was engaged. She didn’t talk about it much, and he found it so easy to forget.......

“So when are we due at the jeweler’s?” CD asked.

“1:30. That’s when the shop owner said the guy should be back from his lunchbreak,” Nate replied. They were being sent undercover to a jeweler’s whose owner thought that one of his employees was taking prospective customers and selling them black-market diamonds in the back alley of the store for a big cut of the retail price.

“OK, then we should hurry back to the division to get changed and head over the jeweler’s,” CD said. Nate nodded and off they went.

A half hour later, Nate and CD were dressed in their own casual clothes and getting ready to go into the jeweler’s. Lieutenant McCafferty was stationed in her unmarked squad car, supervising the bust. Other backup officers were scattered around, hidden as well. Nate and CD had been nominated to act as the customers, as they were the right age to be in the market for a diamond engagement ring. Diamonds were this guy’s alleged specialty. CD had done some undercover work before, but not a lot, so she was a little nervous. Nate, however, was of course smooth at it from his years in Vice. He had actually become quite a good actor from it.

“You ready?” he asked CD as they walked up the sidewalk to the door.

“Yeah, I guess,” CD replied and gave a nervous smile.

“If you aren’t comfortable with it, don’t feel bad to let me do the talking. I’ve done more of this type of thing than you have. I mean, you can do as much as you want to, but don’t feel you have to do half of it.”

“Geez, Nate! I can handle it, OK? I may not have done as much undercover stuff as you have, but I have done this kind of thing before. I’ll be fine.”

“OK,” Nate replied. They were now at the door, and he quickly opened the door for CD before she had the chance to open it. CD looked at him a little surprised. “After you, honey!” Nate said as if they really were an engaged couple.

“Um, thanks,” CD replied and stepped inside of the store. She didn’t quite know how to respond—she knew that they were supposed to act like a real couple, but she also realized that opening the door for her was something that Paul never did, and they were actually engaged.

Nate followed her inside. When he caught up with her, he lightly placed one hand on her back as they approached the counter. They both noticed the owner was the one standing at the counter. The owner looked up at them from his work. “Is it time?” he leaned in and whispered. He was pretty sure that these were the cops he had been told were coming in. He had been told that they were both tall, young, and attractive, which they certainly were.

Nate and CD both nodded at the man, who wrapped up what he was doing and called out to the suspect. “Hey, Guido?”

A young man who looked like a poster boy for the mob emerged from the back room. “Yeah?”

“I’ve got to make a run to the bank. Could you wait on these customers, please?”

“Sure, Mr. Van Buren. No problem,” Guido replied and smiled. Then he turned to Nate and CD. “Welcome to Van Buren jewelry. What can I do for you today?” With that, Mr. Van Buren picked up his strong box, receipt folder, and bank book and headed out the back door. He gave a slight nod over his shoulder to CD and Nate as he left.

Nate made eye contact with him. CD noticed, but kept her eyes glued to Guido so he wouldn’t become suspicious. CD said, “We’d, uh, like to look at some diamond rings.”

Nate looked back at Guido, and then CD. He put his arm around her waist and smiled. “We’re getting married, and I’d like to buy this wonderful lady a big, beautiful ring.” CD couldn’t help but smile back at him. No one had ever called her a ‘wonderful lady’ before. She knew it was all just an act, but still....

“Oh, I see. Congratulations! When’s the big day?” Guido replied with a grin.

CD paled. They hadn’t discussed that before going in. “Um----“ she said.

Nate didn’t miss a beat. “It’s December 4th,” he happily replied. CD stared at Nate in shock. She didn’t know if he had just picked that date off the top of his head, or if he remembered that that was the date she was marrying Paul.

“Wow, that’s nice. That’s a nice time to get married. Where’s you reception?”

CD decided to answer this one. As long as Nate was telling the date of her own wedding, she would just give the other details of her wedding. “Bayside Country Club.”

“Anyway,” Nate said to get the topic back to the diamonds, “We’re looking for something in the 1 to 2 carat range. What have you got?”

At hearing the potential big sale that a diamond that large would give, Guido’s eyes lit up. “Oh, right this way....” he led them to the counter on one side of the store. It was full of many different types of diamond rings. He started pulling out some rings for CD to look at. “Now, we usually don’t have the right size of the ring in stock, but we can order it for you. Do you know what your ring size is, ma’am?” he asked CD.

“Yeah, I’m a size seven,” CD replied.

Nate noticed the price tags on the rings. He was glad that the city was picking up the tab for this one. He decided to steer the conversation to the task at hand. “Um, are all of these diamonds this size this expensive? Do you have any special deals or anything?”

Guido smiled. “Well......ordinarily, they are this price. This is an exclusive diamond outlet. But.....for my preferred customers, I might be able to arrange something.

Nate switched into his smarmy, street-wise Vice persona. He leaned across the counter and gave a little smirk. “So, what does it take to be a ‘preferred’ customer?” he whispered.

“I like your style, man,” Guido replied with a smirk as well. Then he narrowed his eyes and whispered to Nate, “What about the blonde?”

Nate turned and winked at CD, and then turned back to face Guido again. CD felt a little flutter stir inside of her as Nate winked at her. She was so impressed of this man’s ability to deal with the low-life of the city, as though he was one. She knew he wasn’t, of course, but he was able to just blend right in with them. Nate nodded at Guido and smiled. “Oh, her? Ehhh, she’s cool. Totally cool with it.”

“My lips are sealed,” CD added, trying to play at least some part in this whole operation.

“OK, well, then....meet me behind the store at 7. Bring cash. All you gotta do is keep quiet. And THAT, I will add, is very important.”

“OK, yeah, sure. We’ll be there at 7,” Nate replied.

“Make that 7 sharp, buddy. I won’t hang around long.”

“Got it,” CD said and grabbed Nate’s arm to pull him out of the store. She didn’t want to be around that dirt bag anymore than she had to. But somehow, having Nate there with her made her feel safe. Nate nodded at Guido and walked with CD out of the store. CD gave a hand signal to Kate, and then she and Nate got into their unmarked squad and drove a couple of blocks down to radio everyone. They didn’t want to risk blowing their cover by talking to anyone close to the store.

After they got done reporting the status and making arrangements for the 7 o’clock appointment, Nate looked over at CD and said, “So, CD my fiancé......” He winked at her. “We’ve got about 5 hours til we pick up on this again....what do you want to do in the meantime?”

Hmm.....THERE'S an idea. ;) ;) :D

After they got done reporting the status and making arrangements for the 7 o’clock appointment, Nate looked over at CD and said, “So, CD my fiancé......” He winked at her. “We’ve got about 5 hours til we pick up on this again....what do you want to do in the meantime?”

CD tried to suppress a smirk. “Back off, Jack—I’m only your fiancé in front of the perp.”

Nate grinned. “Mmm hmmm......”

CD smirked. “What do you mean, ‘mmm hmmm?’”

“Nothing,” he replied with a big grin. “So, are we going to go do something, or what?”

“Um, yeah, I guess we could go do something.....like what did you have in mind?”

“I don’t know. Maybe we could put our uniforms back on and pull over some kids and watch them pee their pants!” he laughed.

CD laughed hysterically. Nate watched, pleased and amused at her reaction to his joke. She held her stomach as she laughed. When she was done, she wiped a tear from her eye. “Oh my gosh, Nate, you crack me up!” Nate just kept grinning. “Yeah, that would be fun to do,” she said. “But I actually was going to run some errands after work today, and now I won’t have time to. Would you mind going with me? If not, that’s fine. I can just go by myself.”

“No, I’ll go with you,” Nate quickly replied. “What do you have to do?”

“Um, well, I have to return something at the mall, pick up some stamps, get a few things at the grocery store, and, um.....hell, I can do that tomorrow.”

“What?” Nate chuckled. “Go tanning?” he laughed.

“No,” CD chuckled.

“Come on, what? You have me dying of curiosity now!”

“Get a wax,” CD said in a quiet voice. Nate exploded with laughter. “See? I knew I shouldn’t have told you!” CD said and crossed her arms.

Nate tried his best to suck it up. Then he reached over and gave her a side hug. “I’m sorry, CD. I’ll be serious now. Please tell me it’s just an eyebrow wax, though, or I’ll have to start laughing like a 12 year old boy again.”

“Hmmmpf!” CD mumbled and still held her arms across her chest. “It’s just the eyebrows, Nate—you can stop worrying. And by the way, that’s not the ONLY time you’ve acted like a 12 year old boy.”

Nate looked at her with his puppy dog eyes. “I’ll make it up to you, CD.”

“Yeah, sure,” she replied and rolled her eyes.

~~~~~~~~~~~~
Nate “helped” CD with her errands. He acted like he was a help, but being a man, he of course made the experience take longer. Still, CD didn’t mind. Secretly, she really enjoyed spending time with him. He just had this charismatic way about him. They could talk for hours and hours about everything from their favorite flavors of ice cream, to deep conversations about life. Not only did Nate seem to care about her, but he also seemed to be truly genuine. In just the short time Nate had been CD’s partner, she found herself wondering how she ever worked
Nate “helped” CD with her errands. He acted like he was a help, but being a man, he of course made the experience take longer. Still, CD didn’t mind. Secretly, she really enjoyed spending time with him. He just had this charismatic way about him. They could talk for hours and hours about everything from their favorite flavors of ice cream, to deep conversations about life. Not only did Nate seem to care about her, but he also seemed to be truly genuine. In just the short time Nate had been CD’s partner, she found herself wondering how she ever worked
without him.
The last stop was the mall so CD could return an outfit. As they were walking out of the store, Nate said, “Would you like some ice cream?”
CD looked at him and smiled in surprise. “Um, yeah! I’d love some.” She felt her heart skip a little beat at that.
They went down to the food court, and Nate ordered a double chocolate ice cream cone for himself. Then he turned to CD and asked, “What would you like?”
“Um.....a mint chocolate chip cone, thanks,” she replied, a little surprised. Nate got out his wallet to pay for their ice cream, and CD tried to stop him. “No, Nate, let me get it.”
“No, no, it’s fine,” he replied and paid the clerk.
“Are you sure?” she insisted.
“Please, CD, it’s ice cream! I think I can spare that, OK?”
"Well, OK, then. Thanks," CD replied.
They got their cones and sat on the edge of the waterfall fountain. They sat in yummy silence while they licked their cones and listened to the rush of the water behind them. They happily observed two small children toss pennies into the fountain with joy. The children laughed and clapped their little hands at the excitement of it. Nate pulled some change out of his pocket and tossed a coin into the fountain. He slightly smiled as he watched it drift and then sink to the bottom.
The corner's of CD's mouth turned upwards. "Why did you do that?" she asked.
Nate's cheeks turned pink and he smiled at her. "To make a wish, of course."
CD looked at him with skepticism. "What did you wish for?"
"I can't tell you," he replied with a devilish grin.
"Why not?"
"Because if I tell you, it might not come true," Nate said. CD stuck her lower lip out and pretended to pout, but laughed. Nate then said, "Here," and handed her a penny.
She looked at the penny and then looked at him. She then gazed at the water for a moment silently made her wish, and tossed the coin into it. Nate grinned. CD tried to keep from smiling and stood up, shaking the crumbs off of her lap.
"Did you make a wish?" Nate asked.
"Oh, definately."
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

The sting operation went down an hour later. Nate and CD successfully nabbed the diamond salesman, and sent him on his way to county lock-up. It had been an exhausting bust, but they were happy that they accomplished what they had set out to do. They walked out to their patrol car and Nate gave a big sigh.

"What's wrong?" CD asked.

"Oh, nothing. Just tired."

"Yeah, me too. We should be, after our day."

"Yeah. Guess I'll see you in the morning?"

CD nodded. "Mmm hmm.....but, um.....would you want to grab a bite to eat before you go home?"

Nate lifted his eyebrows in surprise. "Um, yeah, sure. I was going to stop somewhere to get some dinner, anyway.....so yeah. Where do you want to go?"

CD smiled. "Anchorside?"

"Sounds good to me. Let's get out of here."

~~~~~~~
After enjoying dinner with each other, Nate and CD finally decided to call it a night. They were both now so exhausted from their day. They walked across the street to the SFPD to get their cars. Nate walked CD to her car to make sure she got there safe. They stood next to her driver's side door and said goodbye. "Well, I guess I'll see you tomorrow, then," CD said and smiled.
"Yeah, see ya," Nate replied. He had enjoyed the day so much. Everyday he liked this woman more. He'd never met anyone like her before.
"You did a good job today, Nate," CD said.
"You, too. And it was an honor playing your fiance."
CD chuckled. "Thanks.....well, goodnight," she said. Then she hugged him.
"Goodnight," Nate murmured into her hair as he held her in his arms, even if it was only for a fleeting moment.
A month passed, mostly without much event. CD and Nate loved working together more every day. Neither discussed it with the other, of course, but each felt that a special bond was forming between them. CD found herself comparing Paul with Nate more and more, to her own surprise. And to surprise herself even more, she began to admit to herself that Nate surpassed Paul in many ways. She also kept shoving off more of the wedding details on Paul and her mother. She wasn’t sure exactly why, but she just didn’t find any pleasure in planning the wedding anymore. It was now just 3 months away....and it was just coming up too close for comfort.
Meanwhile, Nate had mixed feelings about CD’s wedding coming up soon. One part of him wanted the wedding to be done with, so he wouldn’t have to think about it anymore, while the other part of him wanted for it to never happen at all. Every day that passed, Nate couldn’t help but fall more in love with this incredible woman.
Late one afternoon, as CD and Nate were wrapping up work for the day, CD casually asked Nate, “So, Nate, have you gone out with anyone yet? You know, since your divorce?” Her eyes slid over to watch his reaction.
Nate looked up in surprise. “Um, no, well, I mean, um.....I’m actually not officially divorced yet, so I just haven’t felt like it, I don’t know.....”
CD chuckled at his nervous response. She cut him off by saying, “That’s OK, Nate, I understand. I know it’s got to be tough to get back into the scene after a marriage ends.”
“Yeah.....well, it’s not like I’m still crazy about Molly or anything, it’s just.....” Nate trailed off, not wanting to say what he wished he could say with every fiber of his being.
CD watched him with very observant eyes, and then said, “Well, I was just wondering if you would be interested in.....”
Nate looked at her with big eyes. “What?”
CD fought to suppress a smile. “If you would be interested in meeting my girlfriend, Deanna?” Nate’s face fell at disappointment, but he tried to cover it up. CD continued, “She’s smart and pretty and has a great sense of humor.....and so you wouldn’t have to meet her alone, you two could double with Paul and me.”
Nate wanted to say no. There was only one person that he wanted to date—and that person he could never ask. But then he started thinking....and thought that maybe seeing someone else would get his mind off the inevitable. “Well, I.....I guess so. Yeah, sure, why not?” Nate replied.
CD smiled and nodded, but on the inside, she felt a little let down. ‘Why do I feel sad? I ASKED him to go out with her.....’ she thought to herself. “Great. I’ll set it up,” she said. Then she picked up her things and left for the women’s locker room to change. Nate let out a big sigh, folded his hands behind his head, and stared at the ceiling.
~~~~~~~

That Saturday night, Paul came to CD’s apartment to pick her up for the double date. It would be the first time that Paul would meet Nate, so CD was a little nervous about it all. She was in the bathroom, putting the last touches on her makeup, and she heard the doorbell ring. “Coming, honey!” she called out as she fixed her earring and walked to the door. She opened it up and Paul walked inside. “Hey!” she said with a smile.

“Hey,” he replied. “You ready yet or what?”

“Um, just one more minute. I’ll be right back,” she said and turned back towards the bedroom to get her shoes. She returned quickly, but apparently not quick enough for Paul.

“What took you so long?”

“I was only a minute, Paul,” she replied, a little surprised.

“You do this all the time! You keep me waiting every damn time!” he muttered.

“I’m-I’m sorry. I don’t mean to.”

Then Paul looked at what she was wearing. She wore a bright pink skirt that stopped just above the knee, with a sleeveless black turtleneck sweater and black high heeled sandals. Her long blonde hair was down, with the front and ends in soft curls, framing her cherubic face. “Is that what you’re wearing?” he asked in disbelief.

CD looked down at herself, and then back up at him. “Yeah, why?”

“Do you want to make me look back or something?” he replied.

CD looked at him again. He was wearing jeans, sneakers, and a t-shirt with a beer ad on the front. “No, I’m not. I just never have much opportunity to dress up, so I thought I would tonight,” she replied cheerfully. She smiled and walked over to him to kiss him on the cheek. She had to slightly bend down to kiss him, as with her shoes on, she was taller than him.

That, of course, did not go by unnoticed by Paul. “And you’re wearing PUMPS! I thought we talked about those, Candy!” he exclaimed angrily.

“Geez, Paul! Can’t I even decide what SHOES I wear?! What’s wrong with them?!”

“You know that they make you taller than me. It doesn’t make me look very good. What guy worth anything is shorter than his girlfriend?”

CD had to bite her tongue at that remark, as there were so many ways she could have retorted to it. ‘Maybe you AREN’T worth anything, Paul,’ she thought to herself. Then she realized that he had not referred to her as his fiancé, but his girlfriend. “Look, Paul, I really don’t want to fight tonight, just for once. Let’s just go and have a nice dinner with Nate and Deanna, OK?”

“Fine,” he muttered.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

Paul and CD met up with Deanna at the restaurant, and they sat at the table waiting for Nate. Unbeknownst to them, he was a little late because he had tried on about 8 different outfits, trying to find just the right look—hip yet sophisticated. He had only ever dated one woman before—and the last time he was nervous about a date was when he was 16.

Nate finally arrived, about 10 minutes late, and rushed inside. He scanned the dining room for CD. When he spotted her, he then walked over to the table, trying to put a big smile on his face. “Hey, sorry I’m late,” he said as he approached the group of three.

CD’s face lit up when she saw him, and felt her heart lift. He always did that to her whenever he entered the room. “Hey, Nate! And don’t worry about it.”

Nate smiled at her graciousness. “Thanks,” he replied. He smoothed his tie and took the remaining seat, between CD and Deanna.

CD began the introductions. “Nate, this is Paul, and this is Deanna.” She gestured to each of them as she said their names. “Paul, Deanna, this is my partner, Nate.”

“Hey, nice to meet you, Nate. I’ve heard a lot of great things about you,” Deanna said with a wink, as she extended her hand to Nate.

Nate blushed a little. “Uh, thanks,” he replied quietly.

Paul just looked Nate up and down. He had a defensive look on his face. “So......you’re Nate.”

“Yeah.....” Nate said slowly and nodded. This guy kind of weirded him out. “And....you’re Paul. Nice to meet you.”

“Wish I could say the same,” Paul replied coldly.

Nate swallowed hard and glanced at CD, who had her nose buried in the menu. “Hmmm, the beef bourguignonne sounds good!” CD announced, keeping her eyes glued to the menu.

Nate glanced at the front of the menu, and then quickly leaned over to CD. “CD, hun, the menu’s upside down,” he whispered in her ear.

CD’s eyes got big, and then quickly flipped the menu the right-side up. “Thanks,” she whispered in return.

“So, Nate.....you’re a cop. How do you like it?” Deanna asked with a curious smile.

“Oh, I really like it. I mean.....some days I wonder why I went into it, with all the crime I see, but....I like the challenge.” What Nate was thinking, though, was, ‘And getting to spend every day with the most amazing woman I’ve ever makes it worth while, too.’ Nate’s gaze moved absentmindedly from Deanna to CD. She was busy reading the dessert card in the center of the table, and didn’t notice his eyes being cast on her form. Nate couldn’t help but stare at her. She looked so pretty, especially in her new outfit. She always looked pretty to him.....but tonight she just looked.....special. It was almost as if she had dressed for a first date, herself.

Deanna noticed that she’d lost Nate’s attention. “Um, Nate, did CD tell you that I was first runner-up in Miss California?” She crossed her tanned legs and flipped her long, straight chestnut hair. Nate still stared at CD, not noticing that Deanna had said anything. “Nate?” Deanna tried again.

CD noticed Deanna trying to get his attention and turned to look at him. “Nate, I think Deanna asked you something,” she said with a little smirk and pointed to Deanna.

“Oh! I’m sorry,” Nate replied and directed his attention at his date. “What did you say?”

“I, um, just asked if CD had told you that I was first runner-up for Miss California.”

“Wow, that’s nice.....” Nate replied and smiled. She could have been Miss Universe, for all he cared. In his eyes, she still wasn’t as beautiful as CD.

Awwww, thank you so much for the sweet reply, Lisa! :) Heeeeeeeere's more! Well, I was going to wait another day or two, but I wrote a TON today, and it just keeps getting better and better, so I just HAD to post more tonight! :D
-----------------------------------------------------------------------

After the group was finished eating, Paul stood up and said to CD, “I’m going to go get the car.” He then turned and left the dining room.

A few seconds later, Deanna said, “I think I’m going to visit the ladies’ room before I go, OK?”

CD and Nate both nodded, and Deanna stood up and left for the restrooms. That left just CD and Nate at the table. CD sighed and said, “Well....so tell me....it wasn’t that bad, was it?”

Nate smiled. “No, it was fine, CD. I don’t think your friend and I hit it off, but it was a nice evening.”

“No, it wasn’t, Nate. Paul was a jerk to you. I’m sorry he was like that.”

“CD....” Nate groaned. “Don’t apologize for him. If he’s a jerk, that’s his problem, OK?” He looked into her eyes.

“I know...” CD sighed. Her shoulders slumped.

“CD.....can I ask you a question?” Nate asked.

“Sure. What?”

“What do you see in Paul?” Nate looked deep into her eyes.

CD felt as though Nate could see right into her heart and soul. “I-I-I....what do you mean?”

Nate sighed. “I mean, why do you stay with him? He treats you like crap. I’ve tried to not say anything for a while, now, when you’d tell me stories about him. I didn’t want to make a judgment before I met him....but now I’ve met him....and I just don’t get it.”

“Well, I don’t know.....I mean, he gives me gifts, and he always apologizes after we fight....”

“CD, guys SHOULD do that. But what makes him special?”

“He told me he loves me.”

“But.....do YOU love HIM?” Nate laid his hand on hers. He felt so earnestly for her. He just wanted to give her everything she could ever want, and he was certain that Paul was not on that list.

CD stared at him with big, round, blue eyes. A part of her wanted to fall into his arms and tell him everything—and the other part of her wanted to act like everything was coming up roses. She didn’t know what to say. Should she say yes? Maybe? She knew deep down that she didn’t love Paul as she thought she should. But oh....it was too embarrassing to admit it to anyone, now. She would look like a fool—or so she thought. “I...I...I guess I do. I mean, I really care about him.”

“But you don’t love him.”

“Nate, love alone isn’t enough to sustain a marriage. Love doesn’t pay the bills or mow the lawn.”

“So, in other words....you’re marrying Paul to split paying the bills and mowing the lawn?” Nate persisted.

CD was starting to get ticked off at Nate’s.....honesty. “Look, Nate, this is absolutely none of your business! Just leave it alone!” she snapped. She hated that he was right.

Nate sighed and stood up. “Fine.....sorry if I crossed the line.”

“It’s OK.....I mean, you have a point....just....leave it alone, OK?” CD crossed her arms and looked away.

“I’m just going to use the restroom....maybe go check to see if my date fell in or something.” Nate grinned, trying to get a chuckle out of CD.

It worked. CD looked at him and giggled. “Yeah, you do that. I’m sure the other women in there will be thrilled to have you walk in on them.”

Nate chuckled and left for the restroom. He walked into the mens’ room and stopped short when he saw something through an open stall door, that was the last thing he expected to see.

Wow, you guys are good! ;) :D
--------------------------------------------------------------

Nate chuckled and left for the restroom. He walked into the mens’ room and stopped short when he saw something through an open stall door, that was the last thing he expected to see.

Nate’s eyes grew to the size of saucers and quickly stepped behind the restroom door, but still inside the restroom. He couldn’t believe what he had seen. There were Paul and Deanna, all over each other, making out like there was no tomorrow. Deanna’s shirt was almost completely removed, and they were groping all over each other. As Nate waited for it to be over, rage consumed him. He wanted to kill Paul DeLorenzo—that bastard who was cheating on CD. Nate’s CD. That precious, trusting, innocent woman who sat waiting at the dinner table, alone, as her fiancé and one of her best friends carried on not 20 feet away. How dare anyone do that to her?

“Come on, baby, we have to get back before she gets suspicious,” Deanna whispered playfully into Paul’s ear.

“OK, just one more for the road,” Paul replied, and from what Nate could distinguish from the sounds of it, sucked her face off one more time. Then Paul said, “So you’ll come over again, later?”

“Yeah, sure, baby,” Deanna replied and smiled. “I don’t think I’m going to get any action out of that Nate guy.”

Paul chuckled. “Yeah. And as long as Candy has this ‘I’m not ready yet’ whine, I’m not going to get anything out of her, either. She must thing she’s a damn princess or something.”

Deanna giggled. “Frigid princess is more like it!”

At those last few comments, something inside Nate snapped. He jumped out from behind the door, just as Paul and Deanna emerged from the stall, grinning. Filled with rage, Nate lunged at them and grabbed each by their shirts. Paul and Deanna shrieked with shock and fear, as Nate then slammed them up against the wall. “You cheat on a cop?! Try meeting the cop’s PARTNER!” Nate screamed at them. “REAL smart move!” Then he looked at Deanna. “YOU! Get out of here and I hope to GOD I never see your face again!” he yelled at her, and then shoved her towards the door. Deanna immediately ran out the door. Then Nate looked back at Paul, and grabbed his shirt with both hands. He slammed his head against the wall. “You BASTARD!” Nate screamed at him.

A look of terror washed over Paul’s face. “Nate, I beg you, PLEASE don’t tell Candy!” he pleaded.

“You bet your fat ASS I’m going to tell her!” Nate yelled in his face. “And her name is CD, you moron! She HATES being called Candy! Maybe you’d know that if you listened to her for 2 freakin seconds!”

“I-I,” Paul stuttered.

“NO, MY turn to talk. I think you’ve done QUITE enough talking for tonight!” Then Nate punched him. “You think that cheating on a woman as amazing as CD is cool? Makes you a real man? GUESS WHAT??!! I’ve got news for you! A REAL man would appreciate all that’s been given to him—a REAL man would never need another woman, because he’s got a PRINCESS of a bride beside him! And you know what?! CD IS a princess! She’s a goddess! If I were marrying someone like CD, I’d place her where she belongs—on a THRONE! And I wouldn’t care if we NEVER had sex—because I’d be sharing my life with her, and that would be enough!”

“I-I-I’m sorry, Nate.”

“Yeah, tell that to CD! You disgust me. Get out of here,” Nate said and shoved Paul towards the door and let him go.

Just then, the manager of the restaurant entered the restroom. “What’s going on in here?!”

“It’s alright, now, sir—I’m a cop, and I had to take care of some business,” Nate said and flashed his badge.

“Oh, OK, officer. Please continue.”

“That’s OK, I’m done now. Thanks,” Nate muttered and followed Paul out the door. CD stood next to the table, staring with huge eyes. She’d heard shrieks, Nate screaming, then had seen Deanna run crying out of the restaurant.

Now Paul rushed over to her and grabbed her hand. “Come on, we’re leaving,” Paul ordered and started to pull her with him.

“We are?” she asked, following him. She looked with big eyes to Nate, who ran towards her.

“Don’t go with him, please, CD! I have to tell you something!” Nate pleaded. Paul was pulling CD out the front door of the restaurant, and Nate trotted along next to them.

“Nate, we’ve already talked! I thought we discussed this!” she replied and rolled her eyes.

“No, wait! CD!” he insisted. Nate put his hands on CD’s shoulders to stop her. The three of them were now standing out in the restaurant’s parking lot. Nate caught his breath as he looked sincerely into her eyes. “I caught Paul cheating on you, just a minute ago.”

“WHAT?! What the HELL are you talking about, Nate?!” CD yelled.

“I went into the mens’ room, and there was Paul, making out with and groping a woman....that wasn’t you.”

CD didn’t know what to believe. She did trust Nate, but she also trusted Paul. She didn’t want to believe that Paul would do this to her. “Oh, come on, Nate! With WHO?!”

Nate sighed sadly. He didn’t want to have to tell her that TWO people she cared about had done this to her. “Deanna,” he whispered, and looked away.

“Candy, don’t believe him! He’s lying, I swear he is!” Paul shouted angrily. “The bastard has some problem with me----look at this black eye he gave me!”

CD looked at Paul’s eye, which was now red and swollen. Then she looked back at Nate. “You PUNCHED him?!” she demanded, in shock. “What the hell is your problem, Nate?!”

Nate felt the situation spiraling out of control. Not only did CD not believe him, but now he was getting worried that she wouldn’t want him around anymore. “CD! I beg you, please believe me! I punched him because he was cheating on you!”

CD looked back and forth from Nate to Paul, and then back to Nate again. She felt deep down that Nate was the one telling the truth, but didn’t want to admit it to herself. “Look, Nate....I don’t want to talk about this tonight. I’ll call you, OK?” Nate’s shoulders slumped in defeat. He wanted so badly to protect CD.....but she wasn’t letting him. CD turned back to Paul. “Just take me home. I want to go now.”

Paul started walking to his car, but looked over his shoulder as he went. He flashed an evil smirk at Nate, then winked at him as he put his hand on CD’s ass. Nate felt something boil up inside of him again, at that, but didn’t do anything. He just had to hold his rage in as he watched them go. Then Nate got into his car and drove home.

-------------------------------------------------------------------

Nate walked into his dark, empty apartment and threw his coat on the sofa. The thoughts from the evening kept spinning through his head. He had a whole mixture of emotions run through him: anger, sadness, hopelessness, worry, and love. During his scuffle with Paul that night, he had realized something he’d suspected for a while now—that he loved CD. Nate went into the kitchen and grabbed a beer from the refrigerator. He popped off the cap, walked back to his chair in the living room, and sat down.

~~~~~~~
Meanwhile, Paul drove CD home, and then walked her to the door, hoping that she’d ask him in. CD unlocked her door, opened it, and then turned to say goodnight to Paul. Paul was leaning in and closing his eyes, obviously trying to get a kiss out of her. CD took a step back. “Good night, Paul,” she said.
Paul’s eyes flew open again. “What, I don’t even get a good night kiss now?” he whined.
“Look, Paul, I’ve had a very confusing evening, and I just need to clear my head, OK?
Paul’s face turned red. “Fine. Just fine!” he angrily replied. “I guess I’ll just leave, then, if you don’t trust me!” Then he turned around and left in a huff.
“Paul....I didn’t say that....I just need to be alone....” CD called out after him, her voice trailing off. Paul heard her, but ignored her and just kept walking.
CD walked into her apartment. She put her face in her hands in despair. Then she remembered something Nate had said—that the other woman was Deanna. CD didn’t want to believe it, of course, but the cop side of her felt that she needed some answers. She picked up the phone, and dialed Deanna’s number. It was busy. CD thought for all of 3 seconds, before she decided to do a little stakeout of her own. She got into her car and drove over to Paul’s apartment building. She sat inside the car, around the corner from the front door, and waited. This was nothing unusual for her—she had sat in dark cars for hours before on stakeouts. This time, though, was different of course—it was for personal business.
After waiting for 10 minutes, CD started to feel a little sleepy and yawned. She knew she had to stay awake though, and keep watch. She looked down at herself. ‘Damn,’ she thought. ‘Should’ve changed out of this get-up before coming out to do this.’ When she looked up again, she saw Paul standing on the sidewalk by his complex’s front door, hailing a cab. She wondered why he was hailing a cab instead of driving his own car, but then realized that he must have wanted it to look like he was home for the night. A taxi stopped, and Paul got inside. CD watched it pull away from the curb and drive off. She let it get about half a block away, and then started following it herself. She didn’t want to risk getting too close, and Paul catching her. After a couple of minutes, she was almost certain where Paul was headed—Deanna’s.
CD followed the cab to close to Deanna’s place. She pulled over onto a side street nearby and watched. Paul paid the driver, got out, and started walking up the front steps. Deanna opened up the door and flung her arms around Paul’s neck, and they kissed. Deanna jumped up and wrapped her legs around Paul’s waist and they stumbled inside the door, kicking it shut after them. Tears sprung to CD’s eye and rolled down her cheeks. She quickly wiped them away, not wanting to let herself cry. ‘Now what do I do?’ she thought. That’s when she turned her car around, realizing that she needed to talk to someone—the only person she could talk to about this.
CD followed the cab to close to Deanna’s place. She pulled over onto a side street nearby and watched. Paul paid the driver, got out, and started walking up the front steps. Deanna opened up the door and flung her arms around Paul’s neck, and they kissed. Deanna jumped up and wrapped her legs around Paul’s waist and they stumbled inside the door, kicking it shut after them. Tears sprung to CD’s eye and rolled down her cheeks. She quickly wiped them away, not wanting to let herself cry. ‘Now what do I do?’ she thought. That’s when she turned her car around, realizing that she needed to talk to someone—the only person she could talk to about this.
Nate sat in his apartment, just finishing his second beer. He decided to go get ready for bed, so he took a shower and put on his boxers and a t-shirt. Just as he was pulling the t-shirt over his head, he heard a knock at his door. Nate sighed and trudged to the door to answer it. He heard another knock, only this time harder and quicker. “I’m coming, already!” he yelled through the door as he unlocked it and opened it. What he saw astonished him.
“Hey,” CD said quietly. She stood before him, still all dressed up, but wearing a jacket as well.
“CD, hey,” Nate replied. He was stunned. Happy to see her, but stunned. “Um, do you....want to come in?” he asked.
“Yeah, thanks,” CD replied and stepped inside. She looked around. “Nice place.”
“Thanks,” Nate mumbled. “Make yourself at home.” CD sat down on the sofa, and slipped out of her jacket.
“Can I get you anything to drink? I was just having a beer, if you’d like one.”
“No, thanks, I’m good.” CD looked around a took a deep breath, trying to muster up what she wanted to say.
Nate kept thinking how strange this was. He sat down in his chair next to her. “So.....you didn’t come here to take a look at my place, now did you?” he said with a smile.
CD smiled. “No, I didn’t. I, um....needed to talk to you.....I needed to talk to you about what happened tonight.”
“Listen, CD, don’t worry about it. I shouldn’t have punched Paul out, no matter what he did or didn’t do.”
“No, Nate. You did the right thing. I’m actually really glad that you punched him out.”
“You are?” Nate asked in disbelief.
“Yeah......OK, look, when I got home tonight, I kept thinking about what you said. For some reason, I just felt this need to check into it. I don’t know....if anyone else had told me, I wouldn’t have believed them, but you.....I don’t know. You’re different. You’re so different from anyone I’ve ever known. I trust you, for some reason.”
Nate gazed at her with much care in his heart as she spoke. “Well, that’s good.....because I only want what’s best for you. I care about you. I trust you, too.”
CD’s eyes caught his gaze, and then looked away when it came too close for comfort. “I.....I don’t even know why I’m here. I shouldn’t be burdening you with my problems. It’s not like you can do anything about them.”
“CD, you can come to me anytime, anywhere with any problem. I’m here for you, OK?” Nate said, and CD nodded. Then Nate continued, “Oh, and I think I did a pretty good job of doing something about your problem already tonight.” He smiled and gave her a little wink.
CD couldn’t help but grin in response. “Yeah, you did at that.....I guess I just need to think about what I want to do now. I just don’t know.” Nate felt a little deflated at that last remark, but dismissed it as just the emotions from the evening. He didn’t want her to ever go back to that jerk again. “Well.....I guess I should be going. It’s been a long night,” CD said and stood up.
Nate felt some disappointment that she was leaving already. He stood up as well. “You sure you can’t stay any longer?” he asked.
CD nodded. “Yeah....I really think I should go now. Thanks so much for everything, Nate.” She pulled him into a big hug. “You mean so much to me.”
Nate again felt her warm, soft body in his arms. Her hair brushed up against his cheek, and he could smell her sweet, heady fragrance. “You mean a lot to me, too, CD,” he replied.
CD pulled back and smiled at him. “Well.....goodnight, partner.”
“Goodnight,” Nate replied. He held the door open for her as she stepped out, and then closed it behind her. He stood on one side of the door, his forehead leaning against it, and his hand on the doorknob. On the other side of the door, CD just stared at it. Her hand, too, was on the knob. They both stood there for about 10 seconds, thinking. Then, at the exact same time, both turned the knob and pulled it open.
“Mind if I come in?” CD purred, breathlessly.
“I thought you’d never ask,” Nate replied and quickly pulled her into his embrace as their mouths crashed together in a fury of passion.
“Goodnight,” Nate replied. He held the door open for her as she stepped out, and then closed it behind her. He stood on one side of the door, his forehead leaning against it, and his hand on the doorknob. On the other side of the door, CD just stared at it. Her hand, too, was on the knob. They both stood there for about 10 seconds, thinking. Then, at the exact same time, both turned the knob and pulled it open.
“Mind if I come in?” CD purred, breathlessly.
“I thought you’d never ask,” Nate replied and quickly pulled her into his embrace as their mouths crashed together in a fury of passion.
They felt the electricity course through their bodies at the instantaneous impact of the kiss. Their tongues explored each other’s mouths, while their hands explored everywhere else. Nate’s kisses began to trail down CD’s neck and shoulders, and she gripped his hair with her hands in ecstasy. She grabbed the bottom of his t-shirt and pulled it up over his head. Then her hands slid down his firm, muscular biceps and chest. Nate’s hands slid up underneath the back of her sweater and toyed with the hooks on her bra. “I can’t believe this is happening,” CD murmured against his lips.
“Me neither,” Nate moaned.
“Nate......” CD groaned. “Nate.....maybe your bed would be more comfortable to continue this on.”
“Mmmm.....I agree,” Nate mumbled and swept her up into his arms. He gazed into her soulful eyes as he carried her into his bedroom and placed her gently on the bed. CD quickly brought her mouth to meet his again, and grabbed him by his shoulder to pull him down with her. “You are so amazing.....” Nate breathed against her soft, pink skin. Her touch felt so tantalizing against his own skin. It was so soft and smooth and beautiful, just as Nate had imagined. In fact, better than Nate had imagined. CD’s fingers softly raked up and down his back. She couldn’t seem to get close enough to him, and wanted to feel him inside of her. This was a surprising yearning for her, as she realized that she hadn’t really wanted to feel that ever, since her rape 9 years before. But that memory was now temporarily deleted from her mind, as all she could think about was her and Nate being together. Nate gripped the bottom of her sleeveless turtleneck and slowly tugged it up and over her head, revealing her now unhooked bra. Nate then pulled the lacy black bra off her chest, revealing her breasts. He was speechless at the sight of her beauty. He couldn’t help but lower his head and kiss all over her chest and stomach. CD groaned at his touch. His hand slipped beneath her skirt, causing her body to shudder in pleasure.
“Oh Nate.......” she moaned between heavy breaths. Their bodies glistened in perspiration from their body heat. CD slid her hand into his boxer shorts and began to pull them down. “Take me, Nate.....take me.” Nate smiled, kissed her again, and removed the last of her clothing before they became one.
~~~~~~~

An hour later, Nate laid asleep, while holding CD tightly in his arms. He was in blissful slumber, his mind in the dreamland of all things sweet and loving. CD just slightly dozed, drifting in and out of twilight sleep. The moonlight shone in from the window, and streamed across her eyelids. She felt secure in Nate’s strong, gentle arms, and looked at him. She couldn’t believe that she had done this—she hadn’t even done this with Paul yet. And yet, it felt so right—as if this is they way things were supposed to be—and she was coming home. She cared for Nate more than she liked to admit to herself. In fact, she couldn’t imagine her life without him.

CD gently pulled herself from Nate’s embrace. She grabbed a blanket from the foot of the bed and wrapped it around her nude body. Then she approached the window and gazed out at the night lights of the moon and the city. Off in the distance, she could make out the familiar lights of the Golden Gate Bridge. Time seemed to stand still as she enamored herself in its beauty. The next thing she knew, a familiar presence approached her side. She looked up to see Nate’s smiling, caring face as he wrapped his arms around her. No words needed to be shared between them—all they needed was to look into each other’s eyes to communicate. CD settled into his arms with ease. They fit perfectly together—as if they had been made for each other.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

The next morning, CD woke up and felt a weight on across her middle. She looked and saw an arm, and then looked at who it was attached to. She looked at Nate’s peaceful, sleeping face beside her, and thought of how happy he looked—which made it so much harder for her to tell him what she needed to tell him. She dreamily thought about the events of the previous night—they had been so sweet and wonderful, like a dream. It was like a precious treasure, but CD couldn’t help but feel the pangs of guilt of sleeping with Nate while she was technically engaged to Paul. Unhappily engaged, but engaged nevertheless......

CD slid out of the bed quietly, and pulled her clothes from the night before back on. As quiet as she tried to be, Nate awoke, though, with a little smile. “Hey,” he whispered happily.

CD grinned and tucked her hair behind her ear. “Good morning,” she replied.

“You look beautiful in the morning,” Nate murmured.

CD smiled a little embarrassed smile. “Thanks. You’re looking pretty hot yourself, there.”

Nate grinned wide. “You hungry?”

CD wanted to just go and avoid talking about what she had to talk about, but decided to stay a little while longer anyway. “Um, yeah. Do you have anything in the apartment?”

Nate chuckled. “What, you just assume that because I’m a young guy who lives alone, I don’t have any food in the house?”

“Um, yeah,” CD replied with a chuckle.

“Well, most of the time, you’d be right. BUT, I do actually have some cereal and fresh milk for once.” Nate propped his head up with his hand, leaning on his elbow.

CD laughed. “OK, well, then, I’ll meet you in the kitchen.” She turned and walked out of the room.

Nate just watched her walk away with a blissful smile on his face. He was so much happier than he had been in so long, and he knew it was because of CD.

A few minutes later, Nate joined CD out in the kitchen, where she was pouring orange juice. She offered a glass to him. “Thanks,” Nate replied and took the glass from her hands. Her hand brushed against his, and they each felt a little shiver at that. Nate put the glass down on the counter beside him, leaned in to CD, and lovingly kissed her. CD melted at his touch. It made her think for a moment that she never wanted to let go, and never wanted anyone but him. After they separated again, CD gave a smile and opened the cupboard. “So, corn flakes it is, then?”

“Yeah, Nate replied. He got two bowls out of another cupboard, and a jug of milk from the refrigerator. He set them on the table and poured the cereal. CD brought over two spoons, and they began to eat in silence. Nate noticed that CD’s mascara was smudged from her night’s sleep, but thought it made her look even sexier. After a minute, Nate said, “So, did you want to do something tonight?” CD gave a long, stressed sigh. Nate himself was stressed at that response. “I’m sorry, did you have plans?” he asked.

“Nate....” she sighed again. “You do know that I’m still engaged to Paul.”

“You don’t mean to tell me that after everything that happened last night, you’d go back to him?!” he replied in shock.

“I’m not going back—I never left. As special as last night was for us, it shouldn’t have happened.” CD forced herself to look at Nate’s heartbroken eyes.

“But CD—why would you stay with someone who cheats on you? With someone who’s supposed to be your friend, no less?!”

“Look, Nate, I don’t know that I’m going to stay with him.....but I do know that I just need some time alone to think about all of this. I also need to give Paul a chance to explain himself.”

“Hell, I’LL explain Paul for you! He’s a two-timing, no-good jerk, who is nowhere near good enough for you.”

CD couldn’t help but give a little smile at that. Nate was so sweet to her. She hated herself for doing this to him, but she felt that it was what she was supposed to do. By now, she was finished with her cereal and got up to put her bowl in the sink. She had to blink back a few tears, and then turned back to walk towards Nate. “Well, you’re probably right, but I just need to think, OK? If I need anything, I promise I’ll let you know.”

Nate nodded. He felt a lump in his throat. He stood up and hugged CD. “I’m going to miss you like crazy.” He also wanted to scream out that he loved her, but swallowed it.

CD smiled. “I’ll miss you, too, Nate.” She kissed him on the cheek, and then walked to the door. Before she left, though, she turned around once more. “And Nate?”

“Yeah?”

“Thanks,” she whispered with a soft smile.

Hmmm, well, Kelly, that Paul is looking better and better all the time to me....;) ;) j/k! Actually, though, I think I'm the biggest CD/Nate shipper on the PLANET, lol, so don't worry about it too much...:p
------------------------------------------------------------------

CD went home again to her apartment and went straight to the shower. The thoughts of the previous night ran constantly through her mind. The ones that ran the most, though, were the ones of her and Nate’s lovemaking. She almost couldn’t quite believe that it had actually happened. It was just too exciting and amazing to be true, and yet she knew that it had happened. Whenever she thought of Nate, her heart lifted. Yet, whenever she thought of Paul, she just felt a mixture of anger, sadness, and confusion. She was so confused. This was the man that she was supposed to be spending the rest of her life with, and he was cheating on her already. Not only was he cheating on her, but he treated her like dirt. This was something that she tried to find excuses for, but she found it becoming harder and harder to excuse. CD finally asked herself, ‘What do I really want?’ She had to think about it for a moment, but her heart cried out its reply. She knew that all she really wanted to do was erase Paul from her memory, and crawl back into Nate’s arms and life.

After CD dressed for the day, she knew she couldn’t take being all alone all day. She didn’t want to talk to anyone, but she also didn’t want to be alone. CD decided to go take a long walk by the Bay.

When CD returned from her walk a couple of hours later, she approached her door just as a delivery man was leaving a magnificent arrangement of exotic, fresh flowers. CD drew near her door, and the man looked at her. “Are you CD Dankow?”

“Yes,” she replied in surprise.

“Well, delivery for you.”

“Um, thanks,” she said and picked up the vase. It was gorgeous. She unlocked her door, walked inside, and placed it on her coffee table. Then she opened the card. It read:
CD,
You mean the world to me.
I am so lucky to have you in
my life—just to know you.
Please, please, give ‘us’ a
chance.
Always,
Nate

CD smiled as she read the card. Her eyes misted a little, and she had to blink back the moisture. She didn’t want to admit it to herself, but she knew that she had fallen for him. In fact, she had almost come to a definite decision about the ‘us’ that Nate was talking about—and it was a decision that they would both be happy with. Then she heard a knock at her door. “Nate?” she wondered aloud, assuming that it was him. She opened the door without checking the peephole as she usually did, as she was just expecting it to be Nate. A smile spread across her lips, lighting up her face, but it quickly disappeared when she saw who stood before her.

“Candy.”

CD swallowed bitter disappointment. “Hello, Paul.”

Paul stood before her, holding a small bouquet of grocery store flowers. “Candy, I’m so sorry about last night. I really am.” CD just held herself, her arms crossed. “These are for you,” Paul said and extended the flowers to her. CD reluctantly took them, and Paul shoved past her and walked right into the living room. He spotted the huge bouquet from Nate that was in the living room as well. “I see someone else beat me to the punch.”

CD couldn’t help but mentally add, ‘He beat you to the punch for lots of other things, too.’ Finally she said, “Paul, what are you doing here?”

-----------------------------------------------------------------

Finally she said, “Paul, what are you doing here?”

"I came to talk to my fiance, of course!" Paul replied in shock.

CD shook her head and turned away. "Paul, please don't call me that anymore---fiance. I'm not even sure if I still want to go through with the wedding at this point."

"What the hell are you talking about, Candy? You're scaring the crap out of me!"

CD turned around again to face him. "Good!" she yelled in his face. "You should be scared, after what you did to me last night!"

"What are you talking about? I don't understand why you're so upset about what your jerk partner said about me at the restaurant. You know it's not true." By now, Paul was so experienced at lying, even he began to believe his own lies.

CD was so upset and horrified at Paul. She yelled at him, "OK, first of all, don't you dare call my partner a jerk again. And second of all, you know DAMN WELL what I'm talking about---and it IS true! Don't you dare try to lie your way out of this one, Paul DeLorenzo---I followed you and caught you and Deanna!" She was now shaking her finger in his face.

Paul was truly shocked. He was nearly in tears, as he realized that he had gone too far this time. "Candy, Candy, I......." he was at a loss for words.

Tears rolled down CD's cheeks. Her jaw was set. She pulled the ring off of her finger and thrust it at Paul. "Here---take your damn ring. Why don't you give it to your girlfriend, Deanna?!"

"Candy! NO!!! I don't want Deanna! I want you!" he pleaded desperately.

"If you want me and not her, then why the hell did you sleep with her? She's my FRIEND, for crap's sake! Or at least she used to be....why couldn't you have picked someone I didn't KNOW at least?!"

"Candy, please, I am SO incredibly sorry. It was so stupid and meaningless. I was so stupid. Please, baby, I beg of you---please don't shut me out now. Please give me another chance---I promise that this will NEVER happen again, ever. I want to make this up to you. I want to make it right again with us. I'll do anything it takes."

Paul reached out for her, but she hesitated, and then slowly pulled back. "I don't know, Paul, I really don't. I mean, I want to trust you----I really do. But how can I trust you again after you cheated to me? After you lied to me? How do I know that you won't do that again?"

"Candy, I don't know, but I'm going to try my best to prove to you that you can trust me. There's nothing that I want more in this world than that. Deanna doesn't mean anything to me. It was just.....nerves about the wedding---that's all. I promise."

CD studied his face for signs of dishonesty. Even though she was expert at detecting lies in criminals, she had a much harder time detecting lies from those in her personal life---or, at least she didn't WANT to detect lies from those in her personal life. "Paul.....I just don't know. I'll have to give this some thought. I need time to get through this."

"That's fine, baby, that's fine. Take all the time you need. Whenever you're ready to talk, you know where to find me. And in the meantime.....I'm going to try my best to make it up to you, OK?"

CD nodded reluctantly. "OK," she whispered, her head down. "I think it's time for you to go now."

"Alright....." Paul replied and stepped to the door. Then he stopped in the doorway. "I really am sorry, Candy."

"I'm sorry, too," she replied, and shut the door.

CD was dreading going to work the next day, but she went anyway. She was going crazy without having something to concentrate on. She walked into the division, nervous about seeing Nate after all that had happened that weekend. She saw him talking to another officer by the coffee bar, and her heart skipped a beat. She wanted him so badly, and yet at the same time, never wanted to see him again. Nate’s eyes met hers as she walked past him. “Hey you,” he said with a smile that lit up his face. “Talk to you later,” he mumbled to the other officer and followed CD. “I missed you,” he whispered and came up close next to her.

CD just smiled at him. Oh, how she loved this man.....even the sound of his voice gave her goosebumps. “Hey,” she replied and tucked a loose strand of hair behind her ear. “I missed you, too.” She had actually entered the division that morning with the intention of requesting a different partner for the day, but just after their brief encounter, that thought was the furthest thing from her mind. She did scan the room, though, to see if anyone was watching them.

“So, have you had enough time to think? Do you want to go out tonight?” Nate whispered with a sexy grin.

CD slyly smiled. “Follow me,” she whispered and led him into an interrogation room. Once they were both inside, she perched herself on the edge of the table and wrapped her hands around the back of Nate’s head to pull his lips to hers. Their tongues collided, and their bodies pressed against each other. “I want you,” CD breathed against Nate’s lips. Nate grinned and his hands slipped between the buttons on her uniform and began toying with them.

After a few more seconds of this play, CD suddenly pulled back. “What’s wrong?” Nate gasped, out of breath.

“I-I can’t do this.”

“What do you mean? We don’t have to do this now, we can wait til tonight,” he offered.

CD looked deep into his eyes. “No, it’s not that....I just can’t do THIS, period....God, I’m such a slut,” she mumbled and slapped her forehead.

“NO, you’re not!” Nate exclaimed and took her hands into his. He gazed into her eyes. “You are NOT a slut. You aren’t Deanna.”

“But don’t you see, Nate? I’m as bad as she is! It doesn’t matter that Paul cheated on me.....that doesn’t give me license to cheat on him. His actions don’t excuse my actions.”

Nate just stared at this woman with the heart of gold. Here she was, mad at herself for giving her philandering fiancee a taste of his own medicine. “CD....you are not as bad as Deanna OR Paul. You’re not bad at all. You’re perfect.” CD blushed at that, and gave Nate a little smile. Nate continued. “PLUS....” he said with a grin and a wink, “you wouldn’t be cheating at ALL if you told him that it was over.”

CD slyly smiled at him, but then looked down. A few tears started rolling down her cheeks. “I do care about you, Nate....more than I want to admit. But...”

“But....” Nate repeated.

“But...there’s also this part of me that wants to give Paul another chance.”

Nate put his hand on CD’s. “What did Paul say to you?” he asked.

CD was shocked at how well he knew her and the situation. “He, um....he said he was sorry. He said that it was a mistake, that he wanted me and not her, and that it would never happen again.”

Nate just shook his head. He couldn’t figure out why he couldn’t make this otherwise brilliant woman see the light. He knew that he would have to come up with some plan.......he might have lost the battle, but he was determined to win the war.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

As the following weeks progressed, Paul managed to put on a good act and pretend that he had changed. He wined and dined CD in an attempt to win her back—and away from Nate. CD, not wanting to shake anything up, also pretended that everything was now fine. Deep down, she knew that it wasn’t right, but it was easier to ignore that inner voice than to follow it.

Nate, meanwhile, stood by and watched as his heart broke over and over. There were times when he thought it would be easier to just request a new partner and move on, but there was always something holding him back that he could not explain or understand. It was a force bigger than himself—he just could not turn him back on CD or a possible life with her, no matter what he did—the magnetic force to CD was too powerful. He resigned himself to just always being her friend and being there for her.....in the hopes that maybe, someday, she would come back to him.

~ December 1, 1993— 3 Days Before the Wedding~

CD’s girlfriends had thrown her a bachelorette party, and it was now winding down for the night. All evening, Kate had noticed that CD seemed quiet, as if she was always distracted by something on her mind. Kate had been noticing that CD’s behavior had been different for months now—stressed, quiet, introverted— but she had just attributed it to the stress of the job and pre-wedding jitters. But now, even after an evening of fun and excitement, when CD should have just have kicked back and had a good time, she was still tense.

They were now at Kate’s house, where the party had ended up. All the other women gradually left, and then CD started wrapping up her things to call it a night as well. CD smiled at her lieutenant and reached for her coat as she said, “Thanks so much for putting this all together. I know everyone had a lot of fun.”

Kate smiled back, but hers was a smile of a more curious nature. “That’s great, CD. I had a good time, too.....” she paused. “But I did notice that someone wasn’t having as much fun as I thought she probably would.”

“Oh, really?” CD asked, concerned.

“Yeah....she’s been pretty tense in general, lately. Do you know her?” Kate asked, her eyebrows up.

CD’s cheeks flushed. “I-I don’t know who you’re talking about.”

Kate sighed and sat down. She patted the spot on the sofa next to her. “I think you do know, CD...... Sit.”

CD sighed and sat down next to the older red-haired cop. Kate was not even quite 40 yet, but she seemed like a mother to CD. CD always listened to what advice she had to give. “Look, Lieutenant.....I’ve just been really stressed out lately with the wedding and all. It’s no big deal.”

Kate knew that it was a bigger deal than that. She wasn’t stupid; she had heard the rumors floating around the office. She had also seen with her own eyes how Paul treated CD......and she had also seen how CD and Nate looked at each other. “CD...I’ve been at this job a long time. I know when people aren’t telling me the truth, OK? So, if you don’t want to talk about whatever is bothering, that’s fine. It’s your own business. Just tell me, and I won’t say another word. BUT.....I get the sense that you do want to talk. Am I right?”

CD paused for a moment, and then her face turned into a grimace. “You should be a detective.” Kate smiled. CD continued, “Lieutenant.....did you have second thoughts when you married Louis?”

Kate chuckled. “HELL yeah, I had second thoughts. And everybody told me to not marry him. My parents, my sister, my friends....among others.”

“Do you wish you’d listened to them?”

“Yeah. I wish I’d listened to them. I could have saved myself a lot of trouble and pain. I mean, don’t get me wrong, it happened for a reason, as everything does. If it had not been for marrying Louis, I wouldn’t have had Amanda, and I probably wouldn’t have gone into police work. It all worked out for me in the end.....but everyone is different. Everyone needs to decide for herself what is best for her life.”

CD hung her head. “That’s what’s so damn hard......I don’t KNOW what’s best for my life. It’s all so confusing. I mean, on one hand, Paul can be so wonderful and charming when he really wants to be. But then, on the other hand....there are times when he can be the world’s biggest jerk...and that’s always when I want Na....nothing to do with him,” CD replied, trying to cover up her slip of the tongue and true feelings.

Kate smiled to herself as she studied CD’s response. “Can I tell you a story?” she asked. CD nodded. “I have this friend on the force, an inspector from another division. We went through the academy together. When she was about your age, she married this guy, a real bum. He was a jerk to her—cheapskate, anger issues, cheated on her, you get the picture. So she ended up divorcing him after several years of struggling, unsuccessfully, to make him a normal person. After they finally separated, she met this other guy. He was everything that her ex wasn’t: sweet, caring, protective, faithful, worshiped the ground she walked on. They ended up falling in love, of course....and now they’re so happy. They have one of the most caring and compatible marriages I’ve ever seen.... But to this day, my friend still wishes that her second husband had been the one to walk into her life first.”

CD listened intently to the story. She felt as though Kate was reading her mind, knowing exactly what to say. No more words needed to be exchanged about the topic. Both women knew what they were talking about, without needing to come right out and discuss it. The story gave CD yet one more thing to consider....and less than three days left to decide.

~ The Night Before the Wedding~

On one side of town, CD tossed and turned in her bed. A feeling of dread festered deep within her. Her stomach churned, and she could feel a migraine headache coming on. The more she tried to convince herself that all this was was pre-wedding jitters, the more distraught she became. She rolled over onto her side, and her eyes fell on a framed picture on her dresser. Nestled among the other frames was a picture of her and Nate, dressed in uniform and grinning from ear to ear. CD was looking straight ahead at the camera, while Nate’s gaze was fixated on her. ‘Look at how happy we were there,’ she thought to herself. Nausea overcame her and she made a run for the bathroom.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Meanwhile, a few miles over, Nate also tossed and turned in his bed. He felt as though his world was closing in on him. Part of him wanted to chase after her and beg her to be with him. The other part of him told himself to let it be, as it must be what she wants, and if he really loved her, he wouldn’t dump his feelings on her at the last minute. Nate’s sweating became profuse, and he got up to get some cold December air. As he crossed through his kitchen to get to the balcony, he glanced at the bulletin board hanging by the door. Tacked onto it was a picture of him and CD. Little did he know, it was the same picture that CD was looking at that very moment.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

CD weakly crawled back to her bed and climbed in. ‘I wish Nate would just ask me to not marry Paul. Why oh why doesn’t he just TELL me?’ she pondered in desperation.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Daylight finally broke. Nate breathed a sigh of relief after his mostly sleepless night. He went out for a long walk, and when he came back, he decided that it was late enough to give Kate a call. He wanted to ask her if she thought CD would mind if he didn’t attend the wedding. He just didn’t know if he could bring himself to seeing her marry ANY man, let alone Paul. Kate was at home. “Hello?” she asked after she picked up.
“Hey, Lieutenant, this is Nate. I hope this isn’t too early for you.”
Kate looked at the clock, which read 7:30. Ordinarily, she would have been up for hours already, but today she had slept in. She rolled her eyes and replied, “Not at all. I love the darkness,” she replied dryly. “What’s up?”
“I just wanted to ask your opinion on something.....”
“Yes, Nate, you HAVE to wear a tie to the wedding,” Kate chuckled.
“No, no, nothing like that.....I was just wondering.....do you think CD would mind if I didn’t come to the wedding?”
“What? I thought you said you were coming.”
“Yeah, I know, I did, it’s just......I don’t know.....I really wouldn’t feel comfortable there. I mean, it would just be weird to see her doing such a personal thing, seeing as our relationship is professional.”
Kate again rolled her eyes at that. Their relationship was anything BUT professional, and everyone knew it. “Nate, I don’t think it’s weird at all. I think that CD would be really disappointed if you didn’t come.”
“She would?” Nate asked, his face brightening.
“Yeah, she would. To tell you the truth....I think she NEEDS you to be there today.” Kate didn’t want to betray CD’s confidence, but she also wanted to give her a chance to change her mind.....and she would need to see Nate for that to happen.
Nate thanked Kate, said goodbye, and hung up. His eyes sparkled as ideas starting compiling in his head. He then walked to his bedroom closet and pulled out his best black suit to make sure it was clean and pressed. Then he went out to get his hair cut, and run some other various errands. Only 8 hours to go until the wedding.....and he wanted to get there early. CD needed him, and he knew exactly why. He wouldn’t miss that for the world.
Awwww, thanks, Lisa! Well, guys, your patience is beginning to pay off.....;) :D
---------------------------------------------------------------------
CD leaned over the bathroom sink at the church. She had just thrown up yet again. She was scared out of her mind. Two voices within her constantly argued with each other—one screamed to call off the wedding; the other insisted that it was too late now to stop the proceedings. ‘After all,’ she reasoned, ‘everything is all set. The church is ready. The dinner is being made. The guests are arriving. The musicians are warming up. It’s just too late.’ She daydreamed of Nate rushing in, professing his undying love, and rescuing her. ‘How did I get myself into this nightmare? Why didn’t I just end it with Paul when I had the chance?’ she groaned to herself. CD glanced at the clock on the wall. “An hour and a half to go,” she sighed.
~~~~~~~~~~~~

Nate, now freshly showered, shaved, and dressed up, arrived at the church. He parked his car, and then remained sitting inside of it for a few moments while he stared at the building. Although what he was about to do was the most logical thing in the world, he was also the most nervous he had ever been in his life.

Finally, when Nate felt that he couldn’t wait any longer, he screwed up his courage and began to walk determinedly towards the church. He entered through a side door, hoping to not be noticed. He listened for the sounds of people, and especially for the sound of CD’s voice. After a few close calls, he found the room that contained CD. His eyes fell over her as a wave of emotions washed over him. There she was, looking so devastatingly gorgeous. Her hair was swept up and piled loosely on her head. Little flowers dotted the golden curls. Her dress was not the traditional wedding gown, but rather an elegant white silk that clung to her curves. A matching scarf draped around her neck and cascaded down her back. The vision of CD took Nate’s breath away. He couldn’t speak. All he could do was stand, frozen, in the doorway.

CD felt someone’s presence and looked up. The moment that she saw Nate, she thought her heart had stopped. She blinked and then looked at him again. Her stomach felt as through fairies were having a party inside of it. Her daydream flashed through her mind again. Could it really be coming true? Dare she hope? ‘No...’ she tried to persuade herself, ‘now stop thinking like a damn fool. He’s probably just wishing me luck or something.’ She swallowed hard. “Nate,” she whispered. Her eyes had a look of desperation, as though she was begging him to do something—anything—to save her from her own mistake.

“CD,” Nate whispered in a voice that equaled CD’s. “CD.....you look beautiful.”

CD looked down at herself. The she looked back up at him and smiled. “Thanks.” CD noticed that all Nate was doing was just standing there, gazing at her. Her heart was beating so fast that she just knew that he could hear it. “Um....what are you doing here?”

Nate walked toward her, and CD patted the chair beside her. Nate pulled it around to face her, and then sat down, leaning forward with his elbows on his knees. He took a deep breath, and then loudly exhaled. “CD....have you ever felt like you just had to find out something, or you would regret not knowing for the rest of your life?”

CD was silent for a moment. Then she breathed, “Yeah.”

“It’s just so overpowering. You try to ignore it, but there’s always this little voice inside that says, ‘Find out! Find out! Or you’ll regret it!’”

“I know that voice,” CD quietly replied.

“Last night I couldn’t sleep. The voice was so loud, it kept me awake. There’s just so many questions on my mind.”

“I couldn’t sleep, either,” CD mumbled under her breath.

“And I just have so many questions about you. FOR you.” He gazed deep into her eyes, as though he could see into her soul.

“Oh, Nate. I have so many questions of my own.”

“I know you do, hun....I know you do....and today, I hope to answer some of them.....this morning I took a walk while the sun was coming up. I needed to think about what that voice was telling me. And I just.....had to come and talk to you.” He paused. “I just had to come and see you. I can’t help but think that.... if I had done something more, if I had been more expressive, if I had just TOLD you that I love you....that today, I would be the one that you’re marrying.” Nate took CD’s hand into his own.

CD felt pure joy well up inside of her. “What?” she choked out. “Are you being serious?” she asked in a pleading tone.

“I meant every word of it. You are so much more than a one-night stand, CD. I need to be with you. I love you.” Nate brought his other hand up to her cheek and softly caressed it.

CD closed her eyes at his touch. She felt like she was dreaming. Was this really happening? She opened her blue eyes again, and stared right into Nate’s. She loved him so much, that she no longer cared what happened—she only wanted to be with him. CD placed one hand behind Nate’s neck and pulled his lips closer towards hers, until they met with a passionate force. Nate vigorously returned the kiss. He wrapped his arms around CD, while CD hands caressed his back.

When they finally pulled back, CD’s face lit up with a huge smile. “OK,” she whispered. Her trusting eyes stared into Nate’s.

Nate smiled with surprise. “OK?”

“OK,” CD repeated and nodded. She grinned. “So if you were planning on going to a wedding today, you’re out of luck, mister!” CD laughed.

“Oh, I think I can find something else to do,” Nate replied. His face beamed with utter and complete joy. Nate pulled CD in for another kiss, sweet and lingering. Nate then gazed at her, as he gripped her shoulders with his hands. “So what does this mean? What are we?”

“What do you want us to be?”

Nate grinned. “I think you know what I want us to be. You are the only woman for me. You are my partner, my best friend....my soul mate. I want it to be you and me, for always.

A few tears sprung to CD’s eyes. “You do?”

“And I always will.”

CD blinked back the moisture in her eyes. Her face beamed. “Well, that’s good, Nate Basso.....because I’m keeping you, whether you like it or not,” she laughed.

“Oh, I definitely like,” Nate replied, as they moved in for another kiss. When they separated again, Nate gave a devilish grin and a wink. “How about we blow this joint?” CD’s smile fell.
“What’s wrong?” Nate asked, concerned.

Her voice choked up. “I can’t face all those people out there. I can’t face Paul....and my mom....and our 200 guests. What in the hell am I going to say to them?”

“CD, I’ll handle it,” Nate soothed.

CD ignored his last statement. “I mean, what am I going to say? ‘Oh, sorry everybody for buying thousands of dollars of gifts and clothes and traveling, and taking a day out of your lives, but I’m not getting married today?’”

Nate watched her face, but then movement in the doorway caught his attention. His face fell in dread. “CD,” he whispered.

“What?” CD asked, puzzled. She slowly turned around to see what Nate was looking at. “Oh man.....” she whispered, her face ashen.

---------------------------------------------------------------------

Nate watched her face, but then movement in the doorway caught his attention. His face fell in dread. “CD,” he whispered.

“What?” CD asked, puzzled. She slowly turned around to see what Nate was looking at. “Oh man.....” she whispered, her face ashen.

Polly stood in the doorway, her jaw dropped in shock. “CANDACE!” she shouted.

CD didn’t know what to do or say. “Mom, I—“

Nate stepped in, cutting her off. “I’ll take care of it, CD.” He stood up and crossed over to Polly. They had never met, but he knew her from listening to CD. “Mrs. Dankow, CD has changed her mind. She will not be marrying Paul today, and not ever, and that’s all there is to it.”

“And who the hell are YOU?!” Polly exclaimed. She put her hands on her hips, and jutted her jaw out.

“I’m Nate Basso.”

“Her partner?”

“Yeah, that’s me.”

Polly looked at her daughter, who was now standing slightly behind Nate. “Well, Candace? Is this true?” CD nodded silently. “What do you have to say for yourself?”

CD looked at her mother, and then grasped Nate’s hand and moved beside him. “I think Nate pretty much explained it, Mom....I’m not marrying Paul. Period. I’ve been trying to work up the courage to break it off for months now, but I never did. Now....well, let’s just say I got some help.” With that, CD looked over at Nate and smiled. Nate smiled back.

“I can see that,” Polly snapped. “So I see—you get some young, sexy male partner, and your fiancé suddenly doesn’t mean anything to you anymore. How can you do this to Paul?”

“EXCUSE me?! How can I do this to HIM?! You have NO idea the crap he’s pulled on ME, mother. He cheated on ME, not the other way around.”

Polly just stood there, glowering at CD and Nate. “Well, I just hope you’re happy for ruining what should be the happiest day of your life.”

“Oh, believe me, Mom, NOW it’s the happiest day of my life,” CD replied, grinned at Nate, and gave his hand a squeeze.

Nate grinned at CD, and then looked back at Polly. “And now, if you’ll excuse us....we have to go make an announcement.” With that, Nate and CD, still hand-in-hand, left the room.

~~~~~~~~
Nate pulled CD into the hallway behind the sanctuary. “Um, CD....I’m going to just go up there and let people know what’s going on, OK? Where do you want to wait while I do it?”
CD smiled sweetly at him. He cared so much about her and her feelings. “I’ll just....wait over on the side for you. Then we can make a quick getaway,” she giggled and winked at him.
“Sounds great, sweetheart,” Nate whispered with a devilish grin. He gave her a kiss, and then they parted ways at the side entrance to the platform. Nate took a deep breath as he saw the scope of the room. It looked beautiful. White and pink ribbons, bows, candles, and flowers were everywhere. About 100 nicely dressed guests were already in their seats, chatting amongst themselves. Others milled about in the back. The harpist was playing soft classical music. Although he felt intimidated, it didn’t stop Nate. He would do anything for CD, and to have CD. He walked up on the platform and picked up the microphone. Nobody noticed much, as he just looked to be a groomsman. “Attention, ladies and gentleman, I have an announcement to make,” he declared into the microphone. People looked up at him in curiosity. “Can we get the groom and the bridal party in here, please? They need to hear this.”
People began to whisper, and an usher and a gift attendant went to go find the bridal party. Nate waited nervously for them to arrive. It seemed to take years, but in actuality it was less than a minute. They all filed into the sanctuary, anxious to find out what the commotion was. Then Nate spotted Paul in the back. Paul looked at him, and his jaw dropped. He knew what was coming.....and the look on his face showed it. But somehow, Paul didn’t seem to care anymore. Not having a wife to sneak his affairs around would make his life a hell of a lot easier.
“OK, I think just about everyone is here....” Nate started. He took another deep breath, glanced at CD’s smiling face, and felt a rush of strength. “I’d just like to say thank you for all the effort everyone here has put out in coming here today, and that it’s appreciated. Hopefully, someday soon, I’ll see half of you again,” he said with a chuckle. A few guests gave out a nervous laugh, but they all looked at each other in question. Nate continued. “Anyway...I’m sorry that this effort will have been a waste for you, but there’s not going to be any wedding today.” The guests let out a collective gasp. “The circumstances are a private issue, but I would like to take this opportunity to say.....” he turned to CD’s direction, “CD, I love you. I have since the moment I met you, and I will for the rest of my life. And I can promise, in front of all these witnesses today, that I will always take care of you, love you, be faithful to you, and be whatever and wherever you want me to be.”
CD’s eyes welled up with tears. She had never felt so loved in her whole life. At last....she had actually found someone who truly loved her, and all of her. CD no longer cared what anyone thought. She ran towards him on the platform, threw her arms around his neck, and held him tight. “I love you, too,” she replied. Then they kissed, right there in front of everyone.
When they pulled back, Nate said to the guests, “I think that about concludes this announcement. We’re going to be on our way now.” He put the microphone back in the stand, and then he and CD ran out the side door.
When they pulled back, Nate said to the guests, “I think that about concludes this announcement. We’re going to be on our way now.” He put the microphone back in the stand, and then he and CD ran out the side door.
CD grinned and giggled as she and Nate ran, hand-in-hand, out the exit of the church. The sun
was setting, and snow was softly falling around them. Many of the guests hurriedly followed after them. “Where are we going?” CD asked between breaths.
Nate pointed with his free hand to his car. “Over there.” He led her to the passenger side, opened the door, and let her in. Then he jogged over to the driver’s side, got in, and turned to CD with a huge smile. “Did you really say that you love me?” he asked.
CD nodded happily. “Uh huh.”
Nate grinned. “Then let’s blow this joint!” They both laughed, and Nate began to drive out of the parking lot. He glanced out the window at the crowd. “Geez, you think they’d never seen
a bride leave the groom at the altar for another man before!” he laughed.
CD laughed as well. “Yeah, what hole have they been living in?” Then CD snuggled up beside Nate as they drove off together.
“Well, where should we go?” Nate asked after a few minutes.
“You mean you didn’t have that planned, too?” CD chuckled.
“Actually, no......I didn’t want to get my hopes up too much, in case you went through with the wedding anyway.”
“You goof,” CD sighed with a smile. “But at least you’re MY goof now.” Nate smiled broadly at her. He was so beyond excited, even about something little like CD saying that he was HER goof. Then CD added, “Well, you know.....I still have two plane tickets to Barbados......” she looked at him with a sly grin and a wink.
“Oh yeah.....” Nate replied, with an equally sly smile.
“And hotel reservations, and I would just HATE to have to lose all that money.....now don’t you think that Paul owes us a vacation?” she chuckled.
Nate winked at her. “Oh, I think he sure does!” he laughed.
“Awww, poor Paul, paying for his ex-fiancé and her new boyfriend to go on HIS honeymoon,” CD chuckled sarcastically.
“Well, you cheat, you lose,” Nate added.
CD laughed. “But the plane doesn’t take off til 1 PM tomorrow. In the meantime......damn, I guess we’ll just HAVE to use that reservation for the honeymoon suite at the Hyatt!”
Nate grinned at her. “Yeah, but I don’t think we’ll be getting much sleep.”
CD giggled and gave him a big kiss. “I sure hope not.”
Here's more----still not long, but longer than last time!
------------------------------------------------------------------------
CD and Nate stood, hand-in-hand and grinning, at the check-in desk at the downtown Hyatt. “Reservation in the name of Dankow,” CD announced happily.
The clerk checked his computer. “Dankow and DeLorenzo?” he clarified.
Nate cleared his throat and glanced at CD. “Um, yeah, that’s me,” he lied.
CD winked at him approvingly. The clerk replied, “Oh, and I see that you’re on your honeymoon. How nice. We’ll get someone to get your luggage.”
“Um......” CD stammered nervously. They didn’t have any luggage. “No, that’s OK, we’re only going to be here one night. We hardly have any luggage.”
“Oh, but ma’am, we insist. Let me get a bellhop to help you.”
“No, really, we’re fine. But thanks anyway,” CD replied and took the card keys out of the clerk’s hand. She and Nate turned and walked to the elevators.
Nate affectionately placed his hand on the small of CD’s back and nibbled her ear. “Now then.....where were we?”
CD grinned, and they stepped onto the elevator. She pulled Nate in for a long, intimate kiss. “I think we were just about to start where we left off three months ago,” she purred. The sound of CD’s voice and her touch on his skin made shivers run up and down Nate’s spine. He felt like he was floating in bliss. He kissed her again. His hands gripped her around her waist, and CD pulled off his tie before playing with the buttons on his shirt.
Finally, the elevator stopped and the doors opened. At first they didn’t notice, until a family of five stood before them and collectively cleared their throats. Nate and CD turned their heads to look. Their faces were priceless with their surprise. “Um....excuse us,” CD mumbled, and she and Nate tumbled out of the elevator and past the family. They quickly turned the corner down the hallway towards their room, but they could still hear the family whispering behind them.
“Mommy, why was that lady unbuttoning that man’s shirt?” asked the six-year-old girl.
“Um.....I guess he was getting hot, dear,” the mother replied nervously.
“But why didn’t he just do it himself? And ewwwwww, why did he have his tongue in her mouth?”
The mother sighed. “I’ll tell you when you’re older, dear.” The older two kids just snickered knowingly.
Nate and CD found their suite and unlocked it. CD giggled as Nate pulled her into the room, and kicked the door shut behind them. They immediately dove in for another kiss, wrapping their arms around each other. CD pulled the jacket off Nate’s shoulders, and then finished off the buttons. Nate’s lips now worked around CD’s neck, while his fingers pulled down on the zipper along the back of her dress. He then slipped the straps off of her shoulders, and the silk fell to the floor. CD pulled Nate down onto the large, soft bed with her. Her hands roamed across his bare flesh, as they each dispensed with the rest of the clothing. “Oh, CD, I missed you so much,” Nate huskily breathed against her soft skin.
“I missed you, too,” CD purred. Her hands went further to revisit familiar territory.
“You have no idea how I waited for you.”
CD smiled at him in the dim light. A glow was cast across her face. “Oh, I think that maybe I do.....but it’s time I made it up to you.” She rolled on top of him. “Now it’s just you and me, forever.” With that, she guided him inside of her, and they made love.
An hour later, Nate and CD laid entwined in each other's arms, panting. CD's head rested on Nate's shoulder, and Nate's hand toyed with hers. CD let out a sigh of contentment. "You're not going to run off the second I fall asleep again, are you?" Nate joked.
CD rolled her eyes at him. "Naaaate! Sheesh, that's not even funny!"
"Well, I thought it was," Nate replied with a grin. He paused for a moment. "This is so amazing, CD."
CD smiled at his words, and then at him. "I love how you call me CD."
"What? It's your name," he replied nonchalantly.
"I know, it's just.....well, I hate it when people call me Candace or Candy, so I really appreciate it when people take it into consideration."
"CD, I'd call you Queen Elizabeth, if that's what made you happy," Nate whispered softly. The soft glow of the light radiated his face. He gently kissed her hair.
CD stared into his eyes, sparkling with love. She ran her hand down his arms and chest slowly, taking in all that was now hers. She was so happy that a few tears sprung to the corners of her eyes. "I love you so incredibly much, Nate," she whispered. "I.....I don't know how I ever lived before you. I can't imagine my life without you. I can't imagine what my life would have been like if you hadn't walked into it."
A tear sprung to Nate's eye, as well. He felt the same exact way about her. The realization came to him that he had never loved anyone before the way he loved CD. Sure, he had loved Molly.....but not with the uncondition or intensity that he had for CD. He knew that he would follow CD to the ends of the earth, if she asked him to. "I am so happy, CD."
"So am I," CD replied.
Nate continued, "I don't even want to think about the possibility of life without you. As far as I'm concerned, there is no life without you. Well, at least no life for me."
CD smiled and brought one hand up to Nate's cheek. She caressed his face slowly, and then rested her hand on the back of his head. "Well, that's one thing you'll never have to worry about, because you're not losing me this time. Not now, and not ever."
They laid resting for a while longer. Then CD said, out of the blue, "Did you really beat up Paul like he said you did?"
Nate smiled bashfully. "Yeah......." he mumbled.
CD grinned. "You got him GOOD. Now that is one great quality to have in not only a partner on the job, but a partner in life."
"Awww, it was nothing," Nate replied.
"Nothing?! The man practically had to have reconstructive surgery, and you walked away without a scratch!"
Nate finally chuckled. "You do have a point. Well.....guess I got a little pissed off.....understandably, I think."
"Totally," CD agree with a smile and a kiss. Then she said, "So, did you want to go get some dinner?"
"Well, I don't think I want to spend that much time in public, where we can't fool around," Nate chuckled with a devilish grin.
CD laughed and reached across Nate to pick up the nightstand phone. "Room service, it is."
Here's more, guys! Sorry it's so long in coming! :wave:
-------------------------------------------------
The next morning, Nate and CD got up, had some breakfast, and left to go pack. Of course, neither had any luggage with them, and they would definitely need it if they were going all the way to Barbados for their “honeymoon.” After stopping off at both of their apartments to pack, they then headed to the airport.
~ 1 P.M. ~
Nate and CD had settled into their seats on the plane, which had now been crawling around the air field for 45 minutes. They had been given warm soda and cashews while they waited, but neither cared. All they could do was sit, hold hands, and smile at each other like giggly teenagers. “Didn’t you say something once about having bad luck traveling with women?” CD asked curiously.
“Hmmm?” Nate replied.
“You know, about warm soda and cashews?” CD prompted.
Nate smiled. “Oh, you know me, CD, I talk a lot about random stuff.”
“Uh huh,” CD replied with a skeptical smile. He cracked her up.
~~~~~~~~~~~

After they landed, CD and Nate found their hotel, unpacked, and then grabbed a late bite to eat. Luckily for them, the golden arches abounded even in Barbados. After they finished eating, Nate reached for CD’s hand, which she gladly gave with a seductive smile. “Are you getting tired?” she purred into his ear and nuzzled him.

“Yeah, a little......but I thought that maybe, seeing as the hotel is on the beach and all, that we could take a little moonlit stroll before we go back,” he replied and smiled.

“Oh, my, aren’t we romantic?”

“Well, I don’t know about you, but I try to be,” Nate chuckled. He winked at her.

CD laughed too, and shook her head. “Yeah yeah......just shut up and kiss me.” Her beaming face invited him as she spoke.

Nate cupped her face in his hands and sweetly and passionately kissed her. CD melted into his embrace. She still couldn’t believe how right this felt.....how right she knew it was. When they pulled back, Nate whispered, “Like that?”

“Yeah, that would do it,” CD choked out, still under the influence of his kiss. Nate grinned, and they held onto each other as they made their way to the beach.

They strolled along the sand dunes, in the soft, tropical, night breeze. The air smelled of a mixture of ocean spray and coconuts. The soothing sound of gentle waves crashing against the shore could be purely heard in the quiet night. The light of moon and stars in the black night sky glimmered on them and sparkled against the water. Nate and CD slowly strolled along, barefoot on the sand. Their arms wrapped around each other’s sides, and pure contented bliss radiated from both of them. As simple as this pleasure was, it was something that neither one had ever imagined could make them so happy. At last, for the first time ever, Nate Basso and CD Dankow had found their soul mates.

-------------------------------------------------------------

With the following summer came a wedding. A REAL, TRUE, wedding: one that joined a man and a woman who were genuinely and unconditionally and eternally in love. CD and Nate were married barefoot on the beech that June, out in the warm summer sun and the gentle ocean spray. Only their families and closest friends were there to share in the joy. CD wore a simple white cotton sundress. Her hair was left down in ripples of natural waves, and adorned with daisies. Nate wore stone khakis and a halfway buttoned down white cotton shirt.

The minister announced Nate and CD Basso as husband and wife, and then gave permission for Nate to kiss his bride. Nate kissed her, wrapped his arms around her waist, lifted her up, and twirled her though the air. Their day had come.

THE END
