If you're not one for long posts, don't bother. I don't think it'd be worth it. I don't want anybody thinking I'm just another depressed individual out there who needs to work out his problems and stop looking for sympathy online. Well for starters, I'm not looking for sympathy or anything, I just want an answer to a simple question. Why are people so damn stupid? Okay, before y'all space out and wonder what the hell I'm talking about, I'll try and do a recap of the events that took place over the last few days.

So as almost everyone knows, me and my family owns and runs a hotel in Western Colorado, and we have for the last 3 1/2 years. I had some man reserve a room for a worker of his with us for two nights that started last night. He gave us a credit card and I ran it through the terminal to see if it was valid, and it was working normally, so we're all good and dandy right now. He told me he was going to be paying with traveler's cheques when he was going to check out, and since his card was guaranteeing his room, nothing seemed out of the ordinary. (A lot of people hold room on their cards and pay at check out) So the worker arrives yesterday. And the only person around to check him in was my brother. He went though the normal procedures of checking him in, took down his ID and whatnot and gave him the key to his room.

So then this afternoon I had two police officers come into the hotel with a picture of some man and said that they're looking him for committing some fraud in the state. I looked at the picture and the face as completely foreign to me. I took it to my parents as well since they actually see more people than I do and said they've never seen the face before. My brother was over at a friends, so he wasn't there to see the picture, but since he almost never checks in anyone, I didn't think twice about it and told the police none of us has seen the man. They told us that he used faulty credit cards and completely made up IDs to cheat people out of their money and all that. But I didn't think twice about it because he had a good credit card and all ID was written down.

Well, later today my brother finally gets home and my parents begin to talk to him about police coming and all that looking for some guy, and they started describing what he looked like. My brother then told them that sounds familiar to the guy that was in the room he checked in. This is where all the comotion starts. We all get suspicious, so I decide to run his credit card again for the total of the two night stay. I run it and it's bad. So then I try a lower sum, and still, it's declining. All the while I'm wondering what the hell is wrong with the card since it was good the other day when I ran the transaction. So then I decide to call his room and ask him what's up. I called for like 5 minutes straight and nothing. No answer. So I'm like "This has got to be the guy." And I freak out because I can't stand to deal with ass holes like him. A few minutes later, his boss called and told me that he was going to arriving in town later today to pay for his worker, since he wanted to get it done tonight. I told him all about what happened with the card and he was like shocked it wasn't working. So he said he'd be down as soon as he can to pay (He was like an hour away) and I was just like alright. I know, I'm an idiot.

So then when I finished the call, I went to my parents only to find out that they went to his room and he, infact, WAS there. They asked him a few questions and whatnot about his boss and the faulty credit card. I went to them, told them the boss called, and went to the guy to explain the whole deal to him. I looked at his face and I couldn't say it was similiar. It could have been taking months ago, but I didn't see the resemblance. (I'm also on edge now, so I'm not thinking straight) So he said he was going to run down to the ATM to get some money. And he left in a hurry, I didn't even finish talking. Still, it didn't add up to me that it was him. I had an inkling, but I didn't have enough evidence to prove it. My parents were like jumping on me saying it was him and I just let him go. They said it's too late to do anything because he already left and he wouldn't be back. So I go back into the office and supposedly his "boss" calls again telling me we were HARRASSING him and that he's very upset. I was like "What the hell?! I said to him this was a very suspicious coincidence so I asked him politely about him, his boss, the card, etc." Then he went on and on about how he called him and told him we were harrassing his worker to no end. I couldn't believe it. He then just hung up on me. We locked up his room on the deadbolt so he wouldn't come back, grab his stuff, and just run until he paid up. (We always do when people don't pay up) So he came back, couldn't get in, and left again. All before we could do something. And what do you know, the "boss" called and yelled at us for locking up his stuff and not letting him have it. So I told him why he couldn't get in because it was way too suspicious blah blah blah and he was like threatening us with turning us into the cops and whatnot and how he's a very unstable individual, so we shouldn't have allegedly "harrassed" him. So me, still being the moron I am, told him we'll wait until he comes and pays for it, but we're not giving him his stuff until we see the money.

Well, it's been like 2 hours since he's called and nothing ever happened. The boss never came in, the worker never came back. Obvioulsy it was a hoax and everytime his "boss" called, he just ran a few blocks over and called us on a cell phone or something. And in that 2 hours, I replayed the whole episode in my head countless times and I couldn't believe what kind of a sap I was to believe everything. Whenever I'm in a stressful situation, my instincts are always blocked out and I freak out. I can never think straight when two different stories are presented to me. My parents telling me one thing and the boss another. It's my one downfall. There are so many things I could have said and done to nail that fing bastard, but like I said, I don't act normal in stressful situations. And with people like him out there in the world, it doesn't make it any better for me. The point of this post? To ask why there such stupid people out there in the world who like to intentionally cause harm to others. I just don't get it. I try and see the good side in everybody (Probably why I was such a sap) and it just makes me sad to think people like causing misery and grief on others. This is probably the longest post I've ever made on this site, but I'm so goddamn mad at myself and I really needed to vent. Sorry if I wasted anyone's time, but I was already here and needed to get it all out. I really hate people. ohno:

Chris, don't be so hard on yourself. Like you said, you were in a stressful situation and your instincts froze. Besides, and don't take this the wrong way, you're young. You're not a seasoned investigator or cop. You're not supposed to know this stuff. Even an older adult would make a mistake. I know you're upset, but try to calm down. It's not you're fault.

What a horrid situation. I hope that ******* gets caught soon. And I really hope you're not beating yourself up for this anymore. Even though it turned the way it did, I think it's better in the long run to be the type to see the good in people/give the benefit of the doubt. And it's not like you're one of those people who are blind to how some people are--you realize their are many incredibly stupid and all-around-bad people out there. And the freezing in stressful situations is so normal. You can't blame yourself for how you reacted.

I agree with Janice. don't beat yourself over the head over this.

When working with the public you get to see alot of horrid people in the world but, always remember............ Not everyone is a crook.

maybe you need to consider changing your hotel rules and regulations.

I'd like to see you do better.

Eh, I'm better now, but like last night everything just happened the wrong way at the wrong time. I know I'm not the only one it happens to, it just annoyed me to the point where I couldn't think straight, so I wanted to get it out. Plus, this is like the first time something like this has happened in the 3 1/2 years I've been running this place, so I don't feel mad or anything today. I'm not going to sulk in it either. But it did help me to post this get it all out and see how much I overreacted. Thanks guys.

I never said I could do better, I was simply stating that maybe you could change something to help you avoid similiar problems in the future.

:(

If it makes you feel any better, I probably would have done something even dumber. I can't think when I'm confronted.
