Lisa Whelchel - E-Letter
30th E-Letter for December of November 2001 03:13:06 PM
Merry Christmas! I wanted to begin this month’s E-letter with a recent entry from my journal that I thought you might enjoy.
“I am so sick of eating! I feel like Haven when she remarked after, yet another, wonderful meal, “I don’t think I have enough skin to keep my stomach all in.” Then again, I like the way Clancy said it, too, when she asked me if she could walk with me in the morning. I told her that I probably wouldn’t be walking as much anymore because it was getting too cold. She replied, “Oh yeah, to keep warm this winter you will need
the extra blubber.”
It was so hard to drive off from our family in North Carolina after spending such a wonderful time of thanksgiving with them. It made it a little easier knowing that it won’t be another year before we see them
again. But even four months seems a long time after getting to spend the last two weeks together. I’m going to miss Aunt Kathy’s bear hugs, laughing with my beautiful nieces, friendship with Cindy, Grandpa’s prayers, Uncle Tim’s boyish enthusiasm, and Grandma doing my laundry for me!
I would have to say some of the highlights of our time together would be the many nights of game playing, especially Spades, with my partner, Haven, the card shark. I will also never forget Cindy’s Green Velvet
Cake (the store was out of red food coloring.) I still chuckle under
my breath thinking about Steve repeatedly calling Tim, “Tucker” and Tucker, “Tim.” Doesn’t that always happen at family gatherings?
I loved watching Tim’s expression as Tucker opened up the early Christmas gift that he bought for him – a remote control monster truck. I don’t know who had more fun playing with that thing - Tim or Tucker.
The snapshot I will forever keep in my mind of Grandpa is of him sitting in his favorite rocking chair. I would never be able to keep a snapshot of Grandma; it would have to be taken with a video camera to catch
her in motion. She is always cooking in the kitchen, folding laundry, taking care of Kathy, or scurrying about with some project.
In between meals we managed to: celebrate Clancy’s birthday, squeeze in a little more scrapbooking, do a book signing, speak at the home church, and catch a matinee of Monsters, Inc, and sharing an early Christmas present exchange.
While thanking God for the privilege of marrying into such a happy, healthy family I thought of the picture of the awning on our RV. We roll it out to come under it for protection against both the heat and the
rain. Isn’t that the way it is with family? When the heat and the pressure from the day begins to beat down on us, isn’t it good to be able to find comfort in the love of family? And when hell tries to rein down
on us, there is nothing like the protection of our loved ones.
You may be thinking, “Yeah, but I don’t have the kind of family you have, Lisa. My family is dysfunctional and scattered and certainly doesn’t offer protection and comfort.” But I want to encourage you to
reconsider. Picture an awning that is tattered and ripped to shreds. It is old, barely functioning and is certainly more holey than holy. Wouldn’t it still offer more shade than standing out in the heat alone? It might not keep you from getting wet, but it would prevent you from getting drenched.
This holiday season is a good time to thank God for the covering of family instead of focusing on what kind of shape that it is in. We all have great, big tears in the fabric. You gotta trust me, my family isn’t
perfect either. But it sure is better than facing the world alone.
This Christmas, would you consider forgiving whoever put the holes in your awning? Why not “patch things up” by returning to God’s design for your shelter – the covering of family.”
Blessings,
Lisa

Parenting Tip
Rewarding Gratitude
Consider starting a new tradition by putting new “Thank You” note stationary in your children’s Christmas stockings, or by wrapping cute note cards as an extra gift for their birthday party. That will make it
easier for them to write thank-you notes – and the more quickly they do that, the more quickly they can play with their gifts.
Manager’s Note: Lisa will be in Nashville with me next week and will have time to personalize 200 of each of her books with “Merry Christmas” to the person you choose. You can order these books by calling 1-615-242-2420 between 9-5 central time Monday-Friday next week only. Also if
you buy both books they will cost only $25 instead of the usual $30. We will also add the usual $3.95 for shipping and handling in order to get them there by Christmas.
Thank you for watching the Movie. It was the highest rated movie that week for ABC. Next week we will have a very exciting announcement and we will inform everyone by e-mail. Have a great day!!

noooooooo he is not blind, he wasn't supposed to go near that wall. But he accidentally spilled paint on them. I was going to take a picture of my wall too, so I could show my kids what a freak I was when I was little. Oh well, spares me the shame
