View Full Version : First time driving thrill
Kay Scarpetta 06-23-2004, 05:06 PM Do you guys remember your first time driving? What was it like? Did you hit anything?
Last night was my 'official' first time driving.. as in, there were other cars around me that my mother was afraid I was going to hit :D
Now my mother has a Buick Park Avenue... the car is so damn long it's like the Queen Mary.. so it was hard for me to parallel park. After 5 minutes of trying she suggested we go to an empty parking lot. So then I proceeded to gun it to 45 mph and my mother thought I was going to kill us, so she said "step on the break!" and... well you can imagine. Anyway, I got a big thrill out of going 'fast'. After an hour or so of just driving and practicing turning and stuff, she actually concluded I might be a decent driver. I don't get my permit until next May actually, but all my friends know how to drive, so she's teaching me to shut me up.
I still say run for your lives when I hit the road...
Brent88 06-23-2004, 05:16 PM I remember the first time I drove on the highway, about 10 months ago(I turned 15 last July, turn 16 in about a month). I was PETRIFIED of all the cars. I LOVE driving outside of the city on the highway or on the interstate, but I hate the stop-n-go traffic. Haven't had a wreck yet though(crosses fingers). Our family ran a golf course for 9 years and I got good practice driving golf carts. I've also been driving on dirt roads for years.
*MIBabe03* 06-23-2004, 05:38 PM I remember my first time driving. It was during drivers ed and it was me and another guy in the car. Anyway he was driving and the instructor told him to pass the car on his left. The kid threw it into park while we were on the highway! Needless to say it was scary and the car got totally jacked up.
Cashodeen 06-23-2004, 05:59 PM I vaguely remember my first "official" time driving. It was pretty basic. I had been practicing at a high school parking lot for two days, and then I drove into real traffic. I didn't hit anything then or ever--while practicing. :D
I can understand the car you're working with. I practiced on my mom's Buick LeSabre. Gawd... it's an old person's car and my mom was only 41. She hated it though. But I hated it more, lol.
vienna waits 06-23-2004, 06:04 PM I drove around a cemetary and my high school parking lot for awhile. My first official time on the roads was when I drove home from the high school. I was nervous the whole time.. that's about all I can remember. I learned how to drive on a Buick too

 it's hell for me. The thing is so damn long!
And in response to Cashodeen, my mom is only 45  but she's getting an Alero [sp?] in a month or so. A MUCH smaller car.

Very good. :D
My mom has a chevy lumina now... another huge one! She hates it too but my dad drives her cars a lot, so he picks them out. I'm surprised at her--she doesn't let him call the shots on anything else. Just the cars. He does ask her if they're okay, and she says yes... even though she hates them.
Hollow 06-23-2004, 06:35 PM erm ive never driven but me and my friend accidentally turned on my moms car one time. to this day i have no idea how that happened because we didnt even have the key.
Mr. Stefani 06-23-2004, 06:36 PM I've been driving for 6 months now,"Legally" since June 4th. Yeah I hate driving now. The excitment of having a new car and a license is gone. But lets see, i've hit many things in the past 6 months. I rammed this car infront of me in my car which I've had for not even 3 weeks going about 30. Not too much damage though:lol: When I was first learning to drive I drove the opposite way down a one way street. That was pretty bad.
Brent88 06-23-2004, 06:40 PM Our two vehicles are a 1995(I think) White Oldsmobile Ciera and a truck we bought in November(Black 2001 Ford Ranger). I love that truck. :D
I am getting me a car sometime around my birthday. Not sure what I want yet, but am looking at a smaller car.
Here's the car(this isn't the same car, but it looks EXACTLY like it):

and here's the truck

(Only difference is it has a back seat with two small windows and two seats that face each other).
Mr. Stefani 06-23-2004, 06:42 PM I learned how to drive on a SUV and this big "boat" car from drivers ed. Now I drive a small sports car. I like driving small cars better, much easier.
dawsongirl 06-23-2004, 07:08 PM Remember it....not really. It was 10 years ago.
I do remember my first few lessons with a manual transmission. I hopped that truck like a bunny.

 at the one way street thing
I just got back and I managed to do a few 3-point-turns or whatever the hell you call them. Okay, so I almost hit someone's recycling bin, but I didn't. I did good.
This is so exciting!
EmoJoe 06-23-2004, 07:44 PM I dont drive yet :D
consentida 06-23-2004, 07:52 PM I'm 17 and I dont even have my permit yet. I dont know how to drive, I know nothing about cars...nothing. Its quite sad. I need to get my permit sometime soon though. I need to take driver's ed in my senior year.
-*Leah*- 06-23-2004, 08:25 PM I've been 'driving' since I was like 4...yeah, with my daddy's help in the bottoms...agh, now I sound so country. But yeah, the first time I drove somewhere by myself, on like a 30 minute road trip it was exciting.
AllIWantIsYourClutch 06-23-2004, 09:00 PM My first time driving...I don't even remember. I think it was around the block or something. If all goes well, I should be getting my license sometime this week. I'm just praying I don't have to take the road test because I don't have a prayer. Backing around a corner is not my strong point...
*Pleasant Tomorrow* 06-23-2004, 09:21 PM Wow...closest I've come to driving is getting in the drivers seat (mom's permission mind you) scared just by doing that...I pushed that pedal and it went like two feet and I flipped out and went back to the passenger seat.
My mom's more excited about me driving than I am. I'm scared ****less. :)

I have to take the road test on July 26 to get my license(my birthday is the 24th, but is on a Saturday).
I am going to be a nervous nellie.

I am going to be a nervous nellie. I passed the test with my driver's ed teacher so I shouldn't have to take it at the DMV, but they have certain "spot check" dates where they'll make you take the test anyway...
Tuesday Weld 06-23-2004, 09:40 PM I remember when I used to drive - I LOVED it! And when I started out, it really was a thrill and it made me feel good about myself! I've got to get back into driving again! :D
ABlairican Pie 06-23-2004, 09:42 PM Because of my mother's freakiness, as well as some of the hardcore TSE instructors over 20 years ago at Auburn High, I have YET to get my driver's license. I have passed the written test several years ago, I have yet to take REAL driving lessons from qualified instructors (I had a person at church give me lessons, and did very well over 5 years ago).
I think the real problem was that my first lessons were so traumatic that it made me put them off for so long. I NEED to get my license AND a car so I can haul around my guitar and amp equipment to shows real soon.
*Marilyn Monroe* 06-23-2004, 11:59 PM I learned how to drive on a manual transmission, and I killed it at every stop sign. Switching gears was so hard for me, but it made driving automatic so much easier.
I don't remember my very first times of driving, but I remember driving with the Driver Education guy one time when I didn't do so well. He was talking to the other student-driver, who was in the back seat. I was trying to move my seat up while trying to drive at the same time. That caused me to step on the gas real hard by accident. Then, in a semi-panick, I stepped on the break hard also. I did that a couple of times before I finally stopped to adjust the seat. We were all three practically getting whiplash, but the drivers-ed guy just kept talking to the girl in the back seat as if nothing had happened.
Sounds like you're going to be a regular ACE at there Karly!;)
Janice 06-24-2004, 02:47 AM Oh no, Karly with wheels . ;) You'll do fine.
It's nerve racking at first, but becomes old hat in no time.

3-point turns...fun stuff. :D And recycling bins are no biggie...parked cars...that's bad. I did that once. :o
My car can sometimes do those without having to stop and back up. Yay!
dawsongirl 06-24-2004, 09:14 PM Just remember this one helpful hint: Don't drive angry, especially if you like to drive really fast...like me.
