Mary-Kate Olsen in Eating Disorder Rehab

people.aol.com/people/art...24,00.html

By Stephen M. Silverman

Mary-Kate Olsen has entered a clinic for treatment of an eating disorder, sources tell PEOPLE.

"Mary-Kate Olsen recently entered a treatment facility to seek professional help for a health-related issue," Michael Pagnotta, a spokesman for Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, who turned 18 on June 13, said in a statement Tuesday. He did not specify what that health issue was.

Pagnotta added: "She is thankful for the encouragement and support of her friends and family who are with her every step of the way."

The sisters, who each boast an estimated net worth of $150 million and will enter New York University as freshmen in September, admitted in a PEOPLE cover story last month: "Being in the public eye, you're labeled that you have an eating disorder," said Ashley. "You have a drug addiction," said Mary-Kate.

Ashley, however, was quick to add: "We don't have problems! There's nothing to worry about."

Insisted Mary-Kate: "If I had a drug addiction, I would be in a thingy – like Promises, the Malibu (rehab) place. You don't see me there. So, like, come on. It's crazy."

With all that money, why would they eat in a disorderly way?

And why are they going to college?

I find it weird that it didn't say which eating disorder they have. But nonetheless, I really hope they get well from it soon. Any eating disorder is horrible to have. It takes your soul, happiness, self-esteem, and the very last bit of good in you away. Utlimately, it takes your life away too. So, I'm glad they're seeking professional help. Best of luck to them.

A TV People:
It's quite hard to admit a problem like this, so you can't exactly blame them. It's not abnormal to initially be in denial.

I am Him:
I think that was a very offensive comment you made. I know many friends with an eating disorder, and it's not at all parties or games. They're physically and emotionally hurt, and some of them are slowly rotting away. I have an array of eating disorders myself. So I must say I am quite offended...

"With all that money, why would they eat in a disorderly way?"
Well, believe it or not, even if you had all the money in the world, you can still develop one. Just because they have money, doesn't mean they're an exception. The next thing you're gonna tell me is that because they have money, they don't have, say.... the flu? Allergies?? My point is, money has absolutely NOTHING to do with disordered eating.

People catch the flu because the virus is in the air. People are born with Allergies.

Eating disorders are a result of someone choosing unhealthy eating habits. Not the same thing.

Eating disorders are very real conditions and not the result of not being disciplined. Look no further than Karen Carpenter. She tried to overcome her illness. The last thing in the world she wanted was to die.

Eating disorders are a result of someone choosing unhealthy eating habits. Not the same thing. How can you be so certain that they have chosen this? In many cases, it is NOT a chosen ordeal. And even if they initially chose to eat abnormally, it's still a problem nonetheless because the person WILL eventually lose control. Hence the term "disorder." Which, by the way, is why PROFESSIONAL help must be seeked. I mean, if it were THAT easy, couldn't they have just "chosen" to go back to their old habits???

You still haven't explained why money has anything to do with anything.

Yes...and they WANT to break away from that image that they grew up with. They DON'T want to be acknowledged as "The Olsen Twins". Mary-Kate wants to be acknowledged as Mary-Kate Olsen and Ashley wants to be acknowledged as Ashley Olsen. That's not so difficult to do.

MANY MANY famous people with money (why is this such an issue with I AM HIM anyhow I don't know) go to college for education - not just to get a job. Natalie Portman, in the prime of her acting career, attended Yale (or was it Harvard?) in between doing the Star Wars movies.

It's not unheard of and I applaud them - any actor/actress - who goes to college.

Also, the word d-bag is censored, so don't split it up into two words to bypass the censor system. The word is not allowed.

This whole year, I've been suffering from eating disorders too. I've just haven't "opened up" to anyone except for a few, nor did I try to do "much" about it. I spent the whole year moping and feeling sorry for myself, which triggered me to join another messageboard: one eating-disorder-related, that is.

Probably like Mary-Kate, school was my first priority... and I couldn't "care" about my health enough to have it ruin my whole future.

But NOW, since I have no school (tomorrow's the last day), I can focus on my health some more. It's too BAD I got banned from the eating-disorder-relating boards, though. :( Now I have no one to talk to. And I've gotta get through this on my own. :crying: I know I probably need professional help, but I'm too afraid to seek it. And so far, I'm not doing too good on my own. Today started out great-- 404 calories up until 8:00, and then I binged 6000 calories of pound cake along with another 800 calories worth of McDonald's. I felt SO bad... I went to the bathroom and jabbed my throat with a toothbrush trying to make myself throw up, but I couldn't... so instead, I jumped roped for an hour...burning off only 273 calories, though :( I'm SOOO tired now. I suck.

Why do some people think that this is some sort of big joke? I don't think eating disorders or anorexia is anything to joke about. I have not gone through either of them and don't want to experience it. But still i don't think it's funny to joke about. Many people have died from eating disorders.

But the vast majority of them (probably 90 percent) have died from eating too much, not from eating too little.

There's not one ounce of sense in you, I swear. I hope your life treats you FAR worse than you treat others. Have a LITTLE consideration, will yah? If not for others, for yourself?

You've put shame to humankind. ohno:

EDIT:
Oh, and for your information, ilovethe80s said that many people die from "EATING DISORDERS." (Not ONLY Anorexia nervosa). Eating too much could be an eating disorder as well. Have you ever heard of compulsive overeating disorder? Or binge eating disorder? Well I, for one, CERTAINLY have because I suffer from both of them, and among others. And believe it or not-- YES, I DO suffer. I suppose it's nice to know that I'm gonna die now, isn't it? Gee, thanks.

300,000 deaths each year in the United States are associated with obesity.

Overweight and obesity are associated with heart disease, certain types of cancer, type 2 diabetes, stroke, arthritis, breathing problems, and psychological disorders, such as depression.

Now how many in the United States die from Anorexia each year?

Now how many in the United States die from Anorexia each year? No where on this thread was I disagreeing with you. I merely pointed out that ilovethe80s referred to "eating disorders" in GENERAL, and not only anorexics. Also, just because less people die from anorexia than obese people do, that doesn't give you ANY reason to disregard and/or mock them.

And for the record, I wasn't "mad" at you for pointing that out. I was more appalled by your Aeon Flux reference. How rude.

Why do you think eating disorders are something to joke around about. In my opinion all you think they are are a big joke. I never had one but even if i did i wouldn't joke around about it. I just don't find any humor in it. Why do you have to make fun of people because they have an eating disorder. This is really sick. And also very sad :( If you can't discuss this issue in a mature manner then i suggest you don't discuss it at all.

Mary Kate looked really pretty a few years ago in Teen People stories. She looked to thin to be in good health the last few
pictures I have seen her in this year.

Many victims will suffer from it for years before they let on about it or it is properly diagnosed. Also many symptomatic health problems take their toll on people who suffer from anorexia and bulimia. Obesity is no different from bulimia or anorexia in that regard.

At any rate, your not knowing how many people die from those eating disorders, and your posting of the numbers of deaths from obesity, is not an excuse for, or an explanation for your laughing about anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa.

i dont even know why i come here. i think it is sick how u all think this is funny. anyways like i said on the full house board she has all the PRESSURE from hollywood to be thin because people in the public eye all think that only people who are shaped like a twizzler are beautiful. and that is not true. i think mary kate was so desperate to shed her little girl image. that she felt the need to go really skinny. i remember reading an article from the SUMMER that someone said she looked skinny. it's hard growing up in hollywood. :( i could just see it on E! in a few years. and i remember thinking long ago that these twins had it made.
