Italic=Dave’s narrator voice
[Scene: driving in the car to NY, music of theme song is still playing]
*Dave is shown looking out the window, his face leaning on his hand while everyone else has huge smiles on their faces*
No one ever seemed to give much thought as to what I wanted…their oldest son…their love…the pride. I was always forced under their spell and I never spoke up for myself…ever.
Mr. Gentile: Now, I promise you’re really going to like New York, son…’where I first met your mom. *they look at each other and smile* You see, nothing beats the fresh air of the big city…the beautiful landscape and it’s security. It’s a one of a kind type of place.
Dave: *he ignores his father and sticks his head out of the window* Hey, look, look at that tree! Those flowers, it’s so-
*Molly throws the large ball she’s been bouncing off the ceiling of the car at Dave’s head and he’s knocked out unconscious as the upper half of his body hangs out of the car*
Mrs. Gentile: *without turning around* Be nice to your brother, dear.
*Molly snickers*
*the car is shown driving off as music stops and next they are in NYC*
*Dave wakes up just as his head is about to get knocked off by a passerby car*
They had done it. They had dragged me to this dump of a place to live for who knows how long.
*A scruffy, dirty man’s face is shown, then view goes back to Dave as a big spit wad from the man flies at him and hits his face*
More than likely…forever.
*a group of hookers are shown*
Molly: *shocked and confused* Mother!
Mrs. Gentile: *just to shut her up and unaware of why she had just called her* Of course you can, dear.
Mr. Gentile: This is it, son. This is God’s city.
Dave: *wiping the spit from his face* Sure is…
*Mr. Gentile pulls into a large garage and all but Dave get out*
*Mr. Gentile sticks his face against Dave’s window*
Mr. Gentile: You gonna get out, son?
Dave: *his face in his hands* No.
Mrs. Gentile: Is something wrong, Henry? Why isn’t Dave getting out?
Mr. Gentile: *he turns to Mrs. Gentile* No, Harriet, I think he’s just a little car sick. He’ll be fine.
Mrs. Gentile: Oh, poor dear. *she walks over to Dave’s window and knocks on it* Dear?
*Dave ignores her*
Mrs. Gentile: Dear! *she screams this so loud she startles herself and Dave jumps and screams*
Dave: I swear I’m coming out, just don’t…kill me.
Poor Mom. She was one of those people who worried…way to much…for all the wrong things.
Molly: Mother! Can we go?
Dave: *once he’s out* Where’s all the…grass?
Molly: *she laughs* It’s dead, silly. This is the city. Dead, dead…dead, dead, de-
*Dave gets an angry look on his face and runs after her and picks her up as if he’s about to throw her*
Mr. Gentile: *unaware and walking away with Mrs. Gentile* Come on, kids. We’re going to have tons of fun…maybe even find a place for Dave.
*Molly looks at Dave, giggles, and runs to catch up with her parents as Dave just stands there*
Dave: Why don’t I just take pills like everyone else? *he starts walking*
Look at us, walking off like that…I oughtta kick my ass. But then basically, in a sense, I was headed there anyway.
[Scene: In the city]
Mrs. Gentile: *in a NY accent on purpose* Oh my God, its Macy’s! *she runs up to it and hugs a sign for a sale on the ground*
Molly: Oh, mother, please? Can we go in? Please?
Mrs. Gentile: *happy sigh* Well, of course! *she looks at Mr. Gentile* If it’s…okay with your father.
Mr. Gentile: *he has a map in his hand and is looking around oblivious to everyone else while Dave is just standing next to him stiff with his hands in his pocket…Mr. Gentile looks over at her* What’s that, dear?
Mrs. Gentle: Molly and I were just wondering…*she motions her head toward Macy’s*
Mr. Gentile: Some wrong with your neck, dear?
Molly: *she sighs* Daddy, mother and I wanted to know if we could go into Macy’s. Please?
Mr. Gentile: *looking up from map* Huh? Oh, right…I’m sorry, sweets, but I’m broke. The Depression, you know.
Molly: Daddy that was 35 years ago…
Mr. Gentile: *mechanical laugh* Rats, ya caught me. Well go on ahead, maybe Dave and I can have some bonding time.
Molly: *she runs up to him and hugs him as he hands her some money* Thank you so much, daddy! *she runs into the store followed by Mrs. Gentile who blows Mr. Gentile a kiss and then skips into the store*
Mr. Gentile: *he shouts after them* I’ll meet you guys back here in a few hours!
*Mr. Gentile turns around to stare at Dave and there’s an awkward silence as they both stare straight into each other’s eyes*
I love my dad, really…I do…but if there was anyone worse than mom, it was him.
*Mr. Gentile slowly turns his head side-ways with a huge smile on his face and Dave forces a smile*
Mr. Gentile: *he runs up to Dave and picks him up and hugs him* Man to man, son. Where should we go first?
Dave: Home would be nice.
Mr. Gentile: Nah, not what with the fresh air and beautiful scenery.
Dave: *he looks around* Yup, beautiful alright.
Mr. Gentile: *he points to his back* Get on my back, son, we’re going to explore!
Dave: But I’m not…5…
*Mr. Gentile grabs his hand and drags him off*
We had walked a good ten feet before dad got interested in a game going on in a television store through the window and I took that chance.
*Mr. Gentile is shown staring intently at the screen as Dave slowly backs away from him…and once he gets far enough, he runs as fast as he can, and eventually, while looking back, runs straight into a guy with slightly long, shaggy hair, huge sunglasses and a mustache and they both fly backwards*
Dave: *getting up while rubbing his head* Whoa, sorry about that, man.
Richard: Nah, man, no worries. *he holds up a box* I’m way too interested in this amazing baby.
Dave: What…what is it?
Richard: *slowly caressing it* It’s a lava lamp for my friend Lisa’s birthday. I figure it’s something I like too…
Dave: *reaching his hand out to touch it* Wow…my parents always feared I’d rip off my own flesh if I ever got one of those.
Richard: *pulls it away* You touched it!
Dave: *staring at him, confused* Why, yes…yes I did.
Richard: *he sighs and drops the box angrily* Great, man, just great. *he rubs his hand around his face nervously*
Dave: What?! What’d I do?
Richard: You’re now officially my best friend. It’s a message from the stars.
*awkward silence*
I had a feeling he was one of those real hippies my dad talked about. The kind that actually did drugs and not the half assed kind like myself
Richard: *to Dave as if he’s crazy for not understanding* You know, man…once you touch the box of the…*he motions his head towards the box*…ya know, the…*swallows hard*…the lava lamp, and you’re the second person who’s touched it after the person who buys it touches it…so you have to be my buddy. Follow me or you’ll be doomed to a curse of being hit by lightning within thirty days. *he picks up the box and starts walking*
and so I did.
[Scene: the front of an apartment complex…which was slightly cruddy yet livable]
Well, it looks livable, right?
Richard: *he looks at it with pride* Home, my friend, home. *he walks while Dave is left standing there…and eventually starts walking after him*
*they reach the door and hear muffled singing from behind it…only it’s really bad singing*
Richard: That’s Lisa, she can sing better than me and I can sing better John Lennon. *he kicks the door open because of the box in his hands*
*Lisa is seen rocking back and forth with a tambourine, then suddenly stops as soon as she hears the two of them, without turning around, and once she does, smiles*
Lisa: Ceremonial, um…birthday…dance.
Dave: *in awe* Wow…I…do that, too.
Richard: Really? Lisa and I thought we were the only ones. I really think the stars brought us together, man. *he puts his arm around his and kisses his cheek* Yes, we are now stuck as if glue. Lisa? He’s with us now.
Lisa: That’s swell…I was starting to get sick of that…what’s his name?
Richard: The Tom guy?
Lisa: Ah, yes. The one who refuses to come dance in the park with us. He’s asleep.
Dave: There’s actually a park in this place?
*Lisa and Richard nod*
[Scene goes quickly to: Park where many a hippies are dancing and chatting about…with tambourines]
*Dave just stares in awe as Diana Ross and the Supremes play for a good thirty seconds as he watches everyone: You Keep Me Hangin’ On.
There was a time for greatness…and there was a time for something even better.
Dave: *still staring with his mouth open* Is this heaven?
*Richard and Lisa walk up behind him*
Lisa: Better. It’s Central Park.
All three: It’s groovy…
*the same song plays again as they’re shown running off and still plays as they go through different quick scenes*
*All three are shown staring at a lava lamp through a store window, and smiling…Dave sees his dad walking down whistling and his smile fades and he runs off followed by Lisa and Richard who skip after him and view goes on lava lamp for a few seconds*
*Next the three are shown on a small stage singing cheerily…too cheerily…to an audience of few while playing tambourines and harmonicas until a guy in an important looking suit, hat and glasses comes over and starts yelling and they run off*
*Next the three are shown at a restaurant, and you can tell by the way Richard has opened his mouth that he belched long and loud. The three laugh as a large, old guy with those important looking glasses comes over to them and complains, and you can tell Lisa is complaining to the man about freedom and peace. He gets angrier and yells hard as the three’s eyes get huge and they run out*
*Next, the three are shown skipping down the sidewalk, and the only space Dave has is directly in front of a pole, which he only notices just as he’s about to hit it. When he does, he blacks out*
[Scene: Dream Sequence, in Dave’s living room]
*screen fades to black and white, in a small but fancy looking house, Dave gets up rubbing his head until he sees a little boy*
Dave: *still getting up* Where’d…where’d all the color go?
*a little boy with slicked hair and long socks is seen on the couch swinging his legs back and forth*
Six-Year Old Dave: Color hasn’t been ‘vented yet, Mister.
Dave: Who are you?
Six-Year Old Dave: *he eats a brownie and gets chocolate all over his face* I’m youuu.
Dave: *his eyes get big* Wait…a minute. You’re that…that kid in that picture in that…*he walks over to the hall and finds the picture not there* hall right…there. Where is it? *he looks under a lamp and a rug*
Six-Year Old Dave: Oh, yeah…I don’t take that until next month. Sorry.
Dave: Oh yeah, that’s right…wait, why am I talking to a 13 year younger version of myself?
Six-Year Old Dave: Yeah, see…I don’t really know how it works. I was sleeping in my bed, minding my own business when this…weird, doll looking thing…he said to go in the living room and suddenly it was morning, I don’t know why it was morning, but I was thinking, jeepers it’s morning so I got a brownie and…
Dave: *frustrated* I don’t…okay, but why?
Six-Year Old Dave: Something about, you’re too stupid to stand up for yourself. *he looks down* We are, aren’t we?
Dave: *he sighs* Yeah…
Six-Year Old Dave: Mommy and Daddy have only been paying attention to the baby…
Dave: *he forces a short laugh* I remember that…
Six-Year Old Dave: *he gets up and paces* And they won’t even let me watch “I Love Lucy” Why? What do they do on that program? Why is it the-
Both: *Dave joins in because he remembers the line* devil’s mistress on a Thursday evening in 90 degree weather…
Dave: *he laughs quickly* I remember that, too.
Six-Year Old Dave: Anyway, I think the whole point of this, Mister…is so you don’t screw yourself in the end. I can’t wait until I’m you, so I don’t have to go by their obscenities. I’ll do what I want, when I want because I’ll be an adult.
Dave: *staring in thought* No you won’t…
Six-Year Old Dave: What’s that, Mister?
Dave: I said-
*the black and white living room scene fades away and Dave sees Richard about to hit him in the head with a tambourine, and jumps up as fast as he can*
Richard: *getting up* You…you hit the pole, man.
Lisa: Yeah, we thought you were dead, ‘about to summon the peace flower for you…
Dave: *swallows out of shock* The peace flower?
*Lisa and Richard nod*
*They’re finally back in the apartment and walk in to see that Tom is finally up with only his underwear on and reading a book*
Lisa: *excited* Tom! You’ve finally decided to express yourself!
Tom: *he jumps up and quickly runs into his room*
Richard: *sigh* No…he was just masturbating while we weren’t home. That Tom. *he shakes his head*
*Tom comes back out fully clothed*
Tom: I thought your little dance didn’t get over till 5?
Dave: Well, uh…we decided to go out and about instead.
Tom: Who the hell are you?
Dave: *he laughs nervously* Dave, uh…Dave Gentile. *he puts on his hand to shake*
*Tom doesn’t put his hand out*
Tom: *loudly and pretending to be excited in an angry way, looking up at the ceiling* Groovy piss balls, another one!
*Dave forces a laugh*
Richard: Don’t mind him. He’s one of those business people. He means well…plus, he’s my dad’s friend and if he doesn’t stay with us…he has no where. With no where, it’s my ass.
Tom: *he cracks up* You bought that? I’m the nicest guy here. *he goes up to Dave and hugs him, and whispers in his ear* I’m an *******, but I’m not nicest guy here. *he slaps his butt a little*
Lisa: He’s with us, he’s not leaving, Tom.
Tom: *pulls away from Dave and backs away slowly into his room*
*there is a knock on the door before the three can recover from what just happened*
*Lisa answers it, and finds the Gentiles standing there*
Mrs. Gentile: *she walks quickly toward Dave* Dave, baby, ohh! You had me worried sick you poor, poor baby! Did they kidnap you? *she hugs him*
Dave: *muffled because his face is directly in his mother’s chest* Uh, no…
Richard: We didn’t kidnap him, ma’am…it was a message from the stars.
*Mrs. Gentile pulls away from Dave quickly and stares…then backs up a few feet quickly until she bumps into Mr. Gentile.*
Mrs. Gentile: *she leans in and whispers to him* He’s one of those…those hippies, dear.
*Molly pops out from behind her parents*
Molly: Jeepers are you on drugs, sir?
Richard: No, I…no.
Lisa: Yes, of course not, peace muffin.
*Molly backs away quickly until she bumps into her mother and whispers to her*
Molly: Definitely on drugs.
Dave: Mom, dad…*he looks at her evilly* Molly, I’ve made a decision as to where I want to live.
Mrs. Gentile: *she turns her head to the side curious* Yes, dear?
Dave: Yeah, right here.
Mrs. Gentile: *she refuses to speak back to him and turns to Mr. Gentile* Henry? Henry, you’ve kept quiet…what do you think about this?
Mr. Gentile: *he itches his neck and then appears as if in thought* I’ve been thinking, Harriet…for the few minutes we’ve been standing here. I uh, I think we should let the boy make his own decisions. After all, he is nineteen now.
Mrs. Gentile: But he’s…he’s my baby.
Molly: *sarcastically* Gee, mom, he’s right. He’s a man and all now…wouldn’t want him sleeping in the same room as your little girl anymore.
*silence*
Molly: You know, because we share a room.
Mr. Gentile: *as if he didn’t hear Molly’s bit* Yes, dear…he’s a man now. And with being a man comes responsibility…responsibility and choices. If he chooses this dump, so be it. He’ll one day learn.
Mrs. Gentile: But, dear…
Mr. Gentile: *ignoring her* Yes, dear…he can stay here for as long as he wishes, as we move into that nice house not far from him and check on him everyday…*breath* Goodnight, son. *he walks out and closes the door followed by a now sly looking Mrs. Gentile and an angry looking Molly*
*more silence*
Richard: Wow, man, sucks the bag. *he pats him on the back, opens up a coke and walks into his room*
Lisa: Yeah they seem like…really cool people. *she fakes a nod and walks into her own room*
Holy…****.
*You Can’t Always Get What You Want plays and starts on “you get what you need” line while Dave just stands there in shock*
*rest of ending theme plays as scene fades away*
Yay.

Yay.
