There was a time when people thought that Freddie Prinze did not belong playing the part of Chico.Also that Jose Feliciano did not belong singing the theme song.(when the show first aired).
They were not concidered Chicanos.
NBC was lobbied because of it.
I am grateful that NBC stood its ground and produced the gifts that we know as Freddie Prinze Sr. and Jose Feliciano.
NBC stood their ground in their believe in Freddie and Jose amid the controversy.
NBC could easily have buckled to the pickets at NBC and Burbank Studios by the Chicano groups who felt disrespected.
Freddie made the remarkable statement""If I can't play a Chicano...then God's really gonna be mad when he finds out Charlton Heston played Moses".
What if NBC would have buckled under pressure?
We would not have known who Karl and Maria Pruetzel's son was.Nor would we seek out the beautiful voice of Jose.I can say that CATM is where I encountered these fine people.If not for CATM,I never would have had the opportunity to admire them.
