I think it was always weak in this area. In the early 70's episodes, the girls all have shags or long, long hair. Also, throughout the run, the guys have pretty long hair for being in the military. Also, would BJ have been allowed to grow his bushy moustache.

Very weak! Especially Margaret's appearance. She looked very contemporary in the later seasons. I agree about the longer hair on the men. Definitely not very GI, even for today!

Aside from the music they listened to, the movies, the newsreel fottage, and some pop culture references thrown in from time to time, the show never really screamed 1950's.

I think they made less of an effort in the early seasons, like hawaii five-o said; in later years, they got better.

The movie and the first season of the TV show were meant as thinly-disguised commentaries on the Vietnam war, so the powers that be weren't trying to hard to make it look like the early '50s.

In fact, for those of you familiar with the original M*A*S*H movie, director Robert Altman didn't want any mention of Korea in his film (if you notice, the word "Korea" isn't uttered once). Under pressure from 20th Century Fox, he added the scrolling "And then there was KOREA" text, with quotes from MacArthur and Eisenhower" during the introduction of Hawkeye Pierce.
