Shoplifting is my 2nd or 3rd favorite episode. It was just really creative and funny. Other then that, Mrs. Garrett really blended in with the girls in this perticular episode. The plot was fantasic, and I thought that Jo was very very classy in this one.

I love it too!! I do have one picky comment-if the girls wanted to buy Mrs. G a birthday gift (or Christmas gift for that matter) why wouldn't their parents help them out a little bit? I mean maybe Nat's folks could bring up some cash since they live close by and then the girls could reimburse them when they got more cash. Of course if this had happened then there would have been no shoplifting episode.

I am bringing this thread to the top of the page because this particular episode features an actress that I am very fond of! The actress that I am referring to is Hazel Shermet. Now there is a babe if I ever saw one! She is so petite and dainty! In the recent past, someone raised to the top of the page another thread regarding this particular episode. You will see that the last response to that thread is mine. It was a real thrill to see someone other than me actually mention Hazel Shermet's name! A third poster pointed out that it was the same actress who played the saleslady in this episode that also played the music/drama teacher in "Green Eyed Monster". I thought that she did a superb job in both roles!

I am responding to this thread mainly because this is one of the very few pages that I have any interest in that I am not already the most recent person to post. On another thread, I, just for fun, offered a theory as to why this is. According to this theory, a lot of the posters might be Roman Catholic and are thus giving up coming to sites like this for the sake of Lent! On a more serious note, someone on the same thread that I posted that referred to Hazel Shermet's character as the bitchy sales lady. Well, although it was clear that the sales lady did have an attitude, I thought that her mannerisms were very hotsy totsy! I thought that her glasses were a very nice touch! One thing that I would be very interested in would be other peoples' points of view about her part in this episode, the other episode that she appeared in as well as other shows in which she was involved.

I liked this episode as well. That sales associate was horrible, though. Wow..... I wanted to smack her upside the head!

One of the most quintessential episodes of the entire series, to be sure. I think many fans who are fans of the cafeteria years rank this as a top episode.

That sales associate was horrible, though. Wow..... I wanted to smack her upside the head!

I find her an utter delight!

You may have noticed her in a season 3 episode, as teacher Miss Downes in charge of the "South Pacific" production in "Green-Eyed Monster".

I wonder is the “Shoplifting” story was an idea from Season 1 and they revised it for Season 2 with jo. It just feels like something that would have been done in Season 1 and it even has the simple “-ing” one word title, i.e. Dieting, Running, etc.

Huh. That is certainly possible; the lady who wrote that episode, Sally Sussman, apparently only wrote one other episode for FOL, and it was for "Sex Symbol", which features three of the characters from the previous season: Nancy, Sue Ann, and Cindy.

Nah, I don't think any of "our girls" (season 1) would shoplift, though. Cindy, Molly, and Sue Ann would never do such a thing IMO. That seems tailor-made for a newcomer with a troubled past, hence Jo.

The only season 1 possibility I could even fathom would be Nancy, and that's only because of peer pressure of seeing how far she would go to get into "The Group", or to wrongly impress Roger, maybe afraid of losing him to another girl with more $.

I would have guessed Sue Ann shoplifted to one-up Blair’s gift. She smoked dope so wouldn’t stealing be next...? Jk

You raise a good point, SM. Sue Ann would know it was wrong, but after seeing Blair's expensive gift, maybe she would. We know Sue Ann caves to peer pressure ("Dope") and one-upmanship ("Running"). In "Dope", she smokes pot to fit in. In "Running", she rejoins the race in order to stop Cindy from breaking her record.

So, while '80s has a valid point about the Lost Girls normally being squeaky clean, Sue Ann does have a history of questionable, competitive behavior.

Although Mr. Bradley manipulates her into joining the race. And I would think more kids would be more apt to try a drug/smoking rather than steal, but I dunno.

I do think though that Sue Ann wouldn't steal. I mean, this is the girl who says "the right thing is married people staying together."

Funny, Sue Ann's not even my favorite Lost Girl, and here I'm the one having the most faith in her!

And on Sitcommania's original comment, about 4 season 1 titles had the "-ing" titles. Since that's less than a third of all season 1 episodes, I think that's a coincidence, since also, like Retro pointed out in saying the following observation in a different way: the writer of that script never even wrote a season 1 script. It doesn't feel like season 1 at all to me; it definitely feels like an original "new probation student Jo" story.

You are right: Sue Ann definitely has a strong moral compass, no doubt.

Yet I think we've all seen moments where Sue Ann doesn't do the right thing: covering for Blair in "Flash Flood" and "The Facts of Love". And what about her lying about her career in "The Little Chill"? She lied most of that episode! Sue Ann has always been very easy to manipulate or push down the wrong path.

Twenty minutes of listening to Blair brag about how amazing her gift was, might convince Sue Ann to do the wrong thing.

Well, just little white lies, to protect a friend.

To me that feels complex in considering, because that's in the future, and I want to say it wasn't written by a season 1 writer? (I can't recall for sure though)

I still can't picture it. I'm not saying it couldn't happen, just that I can't see her doing it. I don't think they even have "shoplifting" in Kansas City! (Blair: "Please, what's there to take?")

After the first retooling, they never gave Nancy any major role in Season One.

But, aside from that, what would cause Nancy to shoplift?

Tumpy: You're not Blair's puppet, Nancy. We like you for who you are. ...As long as you shoplift an ugly Hawaiian shirt from Harrison's Department Store.

Yeah, the Roger motivation would be Nancy. But how would stealing an ugly Hawaiian shirt save their relationship?

Yeah, I think that would work. Now for the team here to travel back to the 1980s to somehow make this episode happen! I'll grab the fake IDs, you and '80s can grab the ropes and chloroform!
