Why they might be annoying
The show began and ended with Kotter telling the stale old jokes.
The students (Sweathogs) were stereotypes (the dumb/sexy Italian, the weak wise-cracking nerd, the fast talkin' black and the tough/wise-ass Puerto Rican Jew).
The four actors were playing high school students despite all being in their twenties.
Mr. and Mrs. Kotter had small arguments on the show, but the real life actors had real heated arguments. Members of the cast often pick sides.
By the end of the last season (1978-79) Kotter and Barbarino were all but written out of scripts.
The catch phrase 'Up your nose with a rubber hose' was used ad nauseam.

Why they might not be annoying
The series showed troubled inner city kids could learn.
Epstein's notes were pathetic like: 'Please excuse Juan for being late as he was in an ecumenical conference with the Pope.' Signed, 'Epstein's Mother.'
Barbarino launched Travolta's successful acting career. He made 'Saturday Night Fever' and 'Grease' during the show's run.
The theme song 'Welcome Back' by John Sebastian, reached #1 (May 1976).
Debralee Scott who portrayed Rosalie 'Hotzie' Totzie, husband was a New York City cop who perished inside the World Trade Center building on September 11, 2001.
