I have heard somewhere, I am not sure where, that Carl Reiner did not want any rehearsal footage used as bonus features on the DVD sets because he did not want the world to see the cast out of character. I have also heard that the producers of the DVD sets have chosen to honor his wishes. If this is true, then why do we get rehearsal footage on the Season Three set. It would seem to me that if this were okay with Carl Reiner, then other gag reels would be fine as well.

I've wondered the same thing myself.
I'm also curious as to why the "Stump The Stars" game show was included, when the actors are obviously "out of character" on that show as well.
But, yes, I too have heard (via both Sam Denoff at www.dvdondvd.com and Mr. Van Deusen at www.thewalnuttimes.com) that it is true that Carl didn't want any "bloopers" included on the DVDs because of this "out of uniform" (so to speak) reasoning.
If you can locate the 24-minute "From The Cutting Room Floor" VHS Tape of Van Dyke Show outtakes, I'd recommend it. Many funny bloopers.
