Another followup on the grammies for the last decade and a half. These were the nominees. Who do you think should have won? What do you like/hate? What if anything is missing?
1989-
Nick of Time (single)- Bonnie Raitt- WINNER
Wind Beneath My Wings- Bette Midler
Cry Like A Rainstorm, Howl like the Wind-(album)- Linda Ronstadt
Straight Up- Paula Abdul
Don't Want to Lose You- Gloria Estefan
IMO: Raitt is the best, when you start to hit 40 it becomes particularly more meaningful, Midler's record is hoary, Abdul can't sing
1990
Vision of Love- Mariah Carey- WINNER
All Around the World- Lisa Stansfield
I'm Your baby Tonight- Whitney Houston
From A Distance- Bette Midler
Nothing Compares to U- Sinead OConnor
IMO: I like Stansfield better than Carey's talent show sound. Midler's record this year is much better than the one form 1989
1991
Something to Talk About- Bonnie Raitt- WINNER
Get Here- Oleta Adams
Emotions (album) Mariah Carey
All the Man I Need- Whitney Houston
Baby Baby- Amy Grant
IMO: Good competition overall, Raitt deserved it though Houston and Adams are very enjoyable. MISSING: Gloria Estefan's Coming Out of the Dark
1992
Constant Craving- kd lang WINNER
Save the Best for Last- Vanessa Williams
Celine Dion (album)- Celine Dion
MTV Unplugged- Mariah Carey
Diva- Annie Lennox
IMO: I don't care for lang, any of the others would have made me happier. Probably Williams. Carey's record had I'll Be There which is one of her best singles to me
1993
I Will Always Love You- Whitney Houston WINNER
I Don't Want to Fight- Tina Turner
Dreamlover- Mariah Carey
Ms Chatelaine- kd lang
I Don't Know Why- Shawn Colvin
IMO: Houston was huge with this song that year but I don't like it. I prefer Turner's tune. Colvin wasn't bad either
1994
All I Wanna Do- Sheryl Crow- WINNER
Ordinary Miracles- Barbra Streisand
Longing in their Hearts- Bonnie Raitt
Hero- Mariah Carey
Power of Love- Celine Dion
IMO: Don't like any of these, I guess Celine just to pick someone. MISSING:Patty Smyth for Look What Love Has Done
1995
No More I Love Yous- Annie Lennox- WINNER
Colors of the WInd- Vanessa Willaims
You Got It- Bonnie Raitt
I Know- Dionne Farris
One of Us- Joan Osbourne
Fantasy- Mariah Carey
IMO: Lennox was the best of this bunch, MISSING: Vanessa had a much better single The Sweetest Days that would have been a deserving winner, Carey's single is r&b while the poppier sounding Always Be My Baby showed up in r&b female vocal for some reason
1996
Unbreak My Heart- Toni Braxton WINNER
Because You Loved Me- Celine Dion
Who Will Save Your Soul- Jewel
Reach- Gloria Estefan
Get Out of this House- Shwan Colvin
IMO: I don't care for Braxton's singing so I vote for Celine MISSING: Wonder by Natalie Merchant and the original I Will Remember You by Sarah McLaughlin which is better than the late award winning live remake
1997
Building A Mystery- Sarah McLaughlin WINNER
Sunny Came Home- Shawn Colvin
Butterfly- Mariah Carey
Foolish Games- Jewel
Where Have All the Cowboys gone- Paula Cole
IMO: I think they chose McLaughlin because she organized Lilith Fair more than for that song. Mariah back for the last time to date form her 1996 vacation is the only one not part of that tour. I dislike McLaughlin's record. Colvin gets my vote though it's not a favorite. There must have been something better in 1997
1998
My Heart Will Go On- Celine Dion WINNER
Can't Take My Eyes off of You- Lauryn Hill
My Favorite Mistake- Sheryl Crow
Torn- Natalie Imbruglia
Adia- Sarah Mclaughlin
IMO: I guess Celine defined the year but I don't like that song. Torn was more interesting MISSING: One Belief Away- Bonnie Raitt
1999
I WIll Remember You (Live) Sarah McLaughlin WINNER
Genie in a Bottle- Christina Aguilera
Baby One More Time- Britney Spears
Thank You- Alanis Morrisette
Beautiful Stranger- Madonna
IMO: Don't like any of these at all esp Britney. Cher's Beleive won a dance grammy but was better than any of these and should have showed up here
2000
I Try- Macy Gray WINNER
Save Me- Aimee Mann
Both Sides Now- Joni Mitchell
Music- Madonna
What A Girl wants- Christina Aguilera
Oops I Did it Again- Britney Spears
IMO: Nothing I like much, I guess Gray but she sounds like she's on drugs
MISSING: Thank You by Dido
2001
I'm Like A Bird- Nelly Furtado WINNER
There You'll Be- Faith Hill
By Your Side- Sade
Someone to CAll My Lover- janet Jackson
Essence- Lucinda Williams
IMO: Hill is the only one I like in this eclectic mix
2002
Dont Know Why- Norah Jones- WINNER
Complicated- Avril LAvigne
Dont LEt ME Get ME- Pink
Britney Spears- forgot which song
Soak Up the Sun- Sheryl Crow
IMO: Jones is overrated, but I dislike the others more. MISSING: A Thousand Miles by Vanessa CArlton
2003
Beautiful- Christina Aguilera WINNER
I'm With You- Avril Lavigne
Fallen- Sarah McLaughlin
Ms Independent- Kelly Clarkson
White Flag- Dido
IMO: Aguilera's vocals sound computerized unlike MacLaughlin who I often dislike strongly but made a good mature record this time
