Moonlighting - Just in time for the holidays!
Posted by David Lambert
5/28/2004

Not too long ago we passed along word straight from Bruce Willis himself that Moonlighting was returning to DVD, this time in box sets.

Property-owner Buena Vista is releasing it themselves this time, reportedly in season sets. A website that is in-the-the-know about BV's DVD plans, UltimateDisney.com, has this to say today in their new story about several upcoming releases:

The popular hour-long series "Moonlighting" also comes to DVD in a boxset this November. Left with a run-down detective agency and no other options, ex-model Maddie Hayes (Cybill Shepherd) becomes boss. The agency's only detective David Addison (Bruce Willis) is a polar opposite to her. But they might just be the perfect couple.

The other three releases cited in that story are all scheduled for November 30th, so it's probably safe to assume that this is the date for Moonlighting as well. Stay tuned, and we'll have more for you just as soon as we can get it. Our thanks to Paul Hillsdon for making us aware of this.

Bruce Willis confirmed on his site (Sept. 20) that Moonlighting will be released on DVDs on December 1, 2004. He was not sure if all of the episodes will be released together, or whether they will be released season by season.

GREAT NEWS!!!!!!!!!!!

A few months ago he talked about the DVDs being released on or about November 30, 2004. So I bet November 30 will be the actual release date since most DVDs come out on a Tuesday. BUT there have been a few exceptions, as I recall.

Whatever date it happens, I'm elated it's going to happen!!!!!

TVShowsOnDVD.com said today that "Moonlighting" is tentatively scheduled for release in the second quarter of 2005 (that's May-June) but it may move. They said the chances are very likely they'll only release the first season or a combined seasons 1 & 2 set, not the entire series like Bruce Willis had commented on. I have no doubt that the first release will sell well & the other seasons will be released eventually. Man, what else do we have to go through to see our Moonlighting on DVD!! I wish they would stop toying with our emotions like this

It's so frustrating. You get all excited because finally something is scheduled to come out on DVDs that is intelligent, funny, well-written etc. -- then somebody kicks you in the shins!

Last night, I went to a local store and was greeted by a DVD series of Don Knotts' greatest movies. NOW, if they can put that crappola on DVDs, then why can't Moonlighting be put out? Why should we have to wait? None of this makes any sense at all.

Tazmania

HASTA LA VISTA!?

Why do they keep doing this to us:confused:

Maybe they are having trouble to get all the DVDs ready before this year since so many people are asking about. Are they afraid that they won't have enough to sell?

I know! I think around six seasons of Friends are out to buy already...and nothing against Friends fans, but that show pales in comparison to ML. Don't you think they could've ditched "The Best of...Season Four" and given us just one ML DVD instead? That seems pretty fair to me.

I agree, I've not even heard of Don Knotts! I'm sure lots more people have heard of Bruce and Cybill!!!

Some of the DVDs on sale in England seem to be the worst of British and US TV, most of which are still on TV over and over again....

I like Friends myself, but I'd swap all my Friends DVDs in order to get the Moonlighting ones!!

One thing being on DVD has nothing to do with another thing being on DVD.

And Im pretty sure lots more people have heard of Don Knotts than Cybill.
But Bruce is more famous than those 2 combined.

Yep I realise that it's all to do with the individual companies, producers, owners, music rights, money, actors, etc. I'm just commenting on the unfairness of it all. :)

I can't imagine that Don Knotts is more famous than Cybill in the UK or Europe. I've honestly never heard of him...has he been in any films?

 Don Knotts was Barney Fife on The Andy Griffith Show & Mr. Furley on Three's Company.

Barwars is right - here in America, more people are familiar with Don Knotts than Cybill Shepherd, but Bruce Willis is more famous than those two all together.

kismet

You think that Don Knotts is more famous than Cybill?

WOW - we disagree BIG TIME on that point.

Could you please list the Academy Award winning movies that Don Knotts has been in? The movies that I saw released on DVD with him in it were not the greatest, IMO.

If you disagree, it's fine.

IT'S ALL GOOD.

Thank you Barwars - I couldn't agree more. Don Knotts is an American TELEVISION (not movie) icon.

Kismet, we'll have to agree to disagree. I'm not taking anything away from Cybill, I have nothing but love for her. I'd have to guess that you're a little biased though, because you seem like a huge Cybill fan. I had the pleasure of meeting Cybill at Sardi's in NYC about 10 years ago. I acted like a fool & asked her a bunch of ML questions lol I also got her autograph. My sister worships Bruce Willis & last year she saw him in concert at Myrtle Beach, SC & got to meet him after the show. She said he gave out Krispy Kreme doughnuts to everyone lol But like you said, it's all good

If it sounded like a putdown, it wasn't meant to be.

I guess I was mad because Don Knotts' movie career does not need to be put on DVDs before a great show like Moonlighting IMO.

Don Knotts is an American icon. His two television shows should be on DVDs -The Andy Griffith Show and 3's Company. But when I see Don Knotts and his movies put out on DVDs before a great show like Moonlighting is put out, then I get a little mad. I also did not agree that Don Knotts is more famous than Cybill. Maybe to some older folks in the U.S. (like me), he is quite famous, but as you can see, some people from other countries have never heard of him.

The thing is, it cost Universal practically nothing to put that on DVD.

But it will cost Paramount a hell of a lot more to release Moonlighting.

(and movies have 100x the chance of a TV show to be released on DVD)

I do agree with you on one thing - Moonlighting SHOULD be put on DVD before Don Knotts' movies lol But unfortunately, movies seem to come before TV shows in the world of DVD marketing.

don knotts is an american movie icon, as mentioned earlier. but, to correct most peoples wrong outlooks, america ain't the world. it's a huge part of it, not not all. as many people just on this board alone that are from other places, i am sure many have never heard of him, at least not by name. they may have seen him, but not caught the name and such.
he was in a bunch of movies in the lates '50's, i believe, and throughout the '60's.
but he will be ALWAYS known for the andy griffith show and three's company.

Tazmania
09-24-2004, 07:59 PM
I know who he is (guess I'm a little older...) but he's not famous and hardly known here at all.
Cybill isn't very famous anymore either in Europe, but...... almost everybody knows who she is!

I guess a picture of Cybill stays engraved in your mind and Mr Knotts doesn't. LOL
But I really wished that they wouldn't look at the pricetags so much but just what the public wants, THAT"S IMPORTANT!

david&maddie4ever
09-24-2004, 09:57 PM
I wouldn't be able to tell you who I think is more famous here in America because all the people I talk to (stupid teenagers) know Barney Fife, but not Maddie Hayes. I think the idea of who's more known depends on the age group you ask.

Anyway, to get back on topic, I can see where you're coming from, kis. I get just as frustrated when I see shows that aren't half the caliber of ML released on DVD. In my book, Moonlighting is a classic (it even made EW's "Top 100 TV Shows" list), and the fact that getting it out to buy is taking this much work and aggravation is unbelievable to me.

CyBr
09-24-2004, 10:50 PM
The harsh reality is the DVDs are about making money. As great as Moonlighting is, my guess is that it will be expensive to get it on DVD, particularly given all the music involved. I'm sure The Powers That Be are weighing that against the demand to make sure there is some profit. Let's hope it balances out in the black.

btw-don knotts is barney fife? i live in new york city with 10,000 things to do and me and my friends actually record the andy griffith show to watch barney fife. he's funny just doing nothing. and my mom and dad and grandparents, sisters and brothers all agree that there's nobody funnier. and that's the only thing we agree on. and you don't have to be a little older to love him-i'm 14.

Hey, Carolanne. I see that you're a newbie here...welcome! My name's Lauren; I'm 14, too. :D

What I actually meant by the whole "age group" comment was that people of an older generation tend to be more familiar with Don, and people of the 80s tend to be more familiar with Cyb. It really doesn't have anything to do with who you like, exactly...just who you view as more famous.

That would be a big mistake in this case. Moonlighting has a very dedicated fan base that knows the show extremely well. If they release incomplete episodes that are no better than syndication, I predict they will not sell well. A lot of diehard fans (pardon the expression) already have incomplete versions on tape.
