Hey all,

I just found out our wishes are coming true. On www.tvshowsondvd.com there is an announcement about The Golden Girls coming to DVD on November 30th, and not just a 'best-of' compilation either. The complete 1st season is tentatively scheduled for release November 30th! Hooray!

Here's the link: http://www.tvshowsondvd.com/newsitem.cfm?NewsID=1584

I've missed watching this show immensely since I quit my cable service about a year ago. Now it won't matter that I don't get Lifetime! Now if only Designing Women would follow suit...

Worth waiting for; I've never seen the first couple of seasons. Maybe a show here and there. Same with King of Queens....I have bought the first two seasons now and savor them like a fine chocolate.

Hopefully these DVDs will sell like hotcakes, enough to warrant release of eventually the whole series!!! Maybe we'll even get eventually The Golden Palace and Empty Nest too!

Either way, I can't wait for the first season of UNEDITED episodes!

Wow, that's so awesome! It's about time Golden Girls got out on DVD! Yeah, November seems like a long wait, but I guess just knowing that it's going to be out is fantastic! Is there anything to worry about the whole "not confirmed" thing?

You see, when a mommy and a daddy REALLY love each other...

Oh, you mean, "The Facts of Life". Heh-eh.

Anyway, This is AWESOME! I didn't exactly get the impression that "The first season IS coming our on November 30th", people, so don't hold your breath. I certainly HOPE it's a for-sure thing, but, I didn't get the impression that it is surefire yet.

The DVD set of Season 1 is definitely coming. It just hasn't been officially announced as to when, that's all. A lot of things could come into play, like if any extras are planned or bloopers, things of that nature.

Also to consider that if the projected date isn't the actual date, it should be thereabouts, at least before Christmas. For sure, they'd want to cash in on the holiday season...

The only word we have is from an unofficial source. I'm not trying to be a party-pooper, but it's not confirmed yet. I'll believe it when I see/hear the press release from amazon.com or Buena Vista.

It's in the works, as far as I know. TVShowsonDVD.com reported a November 30 date, and that sounds just about right to me. Buena Vista might have a lot of extras planned, like they do with their Boy Meets World season one release.

It's said that for a while on Amazon.com regarding the Golden Girls and Buena Vista had also announced that it will release The Golden Girls on DVD in January of 2004 but that has yet to happen. I don't understand what they're waiting for and not for nothing but Boy Meets World over the elusive Sophia Petrillo and the rest of the gals? What are they thinking?!?!

RoseNylund
08-06-2004, 07:36 PM
There is one reason and one reason only: MONEY. The show is making a nice amount of money in syndication. Selling it on DVD could lower the market value. Well, that's what some companies might think. They want to make as much $ off of the show as they can. Not to say that selling DVD's would make people watch less, but I remember Roseanne saying she wanted her show released on DVD, but not if her checks stop coming in from syndication.

Golden Girls, The - List Price Info, Plus New Date for the Girls
Posted by David Lambert
8/17/2004

We had hoped to wait on this info until we had more details, but tonight we started receiving reports that some retailers are starting to list these, even though it's just a date and a price. So here's what little we know:

Last May there was a report from a Disney-themed fan site, UltimateDisney.com, that said The Golden Girls - Season 1 would arrive on DVD this November 30th.

Now we've learned that the release date is actually November 23rd (just in time for Thanksgiving), and that the list price of this set will be $49.99. And that's all we know right now!

Our thanks to Michael Clifton, Jeff Montoya, and others for their help with this. Stay tuned for further developments and updates on it; we're working to get the rest just as soon as we can!

Most definitely these were bootlegs. You're much better off waiting for the official release. Sometimes on EBay the spin-off series, The Golden Palace is offered too, but again this is a bootleg. Bootlegs are fine for things that will never see the light of day (at least in my opinion) but for something that's around the corner, I say wait for the official release.

Just my 2 cents...

It sure would have been nice if they put an episode or 2 of Golden Palace as a bonus on the DVD. Maybe when they get to season 7...

It's the same song more or less, just edited. But what's majorly different from the original NBC airings are the clips that are shown during the theme song. Each season it'd change and reflect more on that particular season instead of a generic one clip for all 7 seasons intro that Lifetime currently uses.

Nope actually it's the other way around. Airdate order is the jumbled mess. Lifetime and syndication airs the episodes in production order. This is the order that I and most of you are most used to, concerning The Golden Girls.

In airdate order, Job Hunting which is episode 2 was one of the final episodes to air during the first season.

In my opinion, production order is the way to go and is what I'm the most used to. Thus, this hopefully will be the only flaw.

Actually I think I'm right

www.tvtome.com/GoldenGirls/season1.html

TVTOME has the episodes listed in airdate order, tell me if that's how Lifetime airs them, I don't know the episodes well enough to tell.

you'll see PC that is production code, that's how some companies put the DVDs in. That's listed after the episode summary on TVTOME.

Hopefully you can help us to know for sure if it's airdate or production order :)

Well, I don't know about the DVDs, but the TV Tome episode guide is in Airdate Order, and Lifetime airs them in production order. If the DVDs are in Airdate Order I'd be really disappointed. They make more sense if you watch them in production order.

Actually, sometimes the production order doesn't make sense. Often times, things are shot out of sequence for whatever reason, and it's only when it's adjusted for airdate order does the continuity make sense. Mind you, I'm not saying that that is the case with The Golden Girls; just pointing out what's usually the norm.

Ed

This is understandable. For example, Good Times taped Part 1 of an episode than taped a different episode before taping Part 2.

However, it's just a matter of being used to a certain thing. Golden Girls has never aired in airdate order (other than when it actually did on NBC and the morning repeats from 1989-1990) Syndication and Lifetime have always aired in production order.

For the most part, most TV shows are aired in production order and then when they come to cable, certain channels (Nick & Nite & TV Land) air them in airdate order, others don't.

Like for me, I always always saw The Brady Bunch in production order and then when it comes to cable, suddenly they're showing the episodes in some "foreign" order. It takes time to get used to. Whats funny is, that Nick at Nite and TV Land actually still don't have it right. (airing Law & Disorder with the 3rd season episodes)

But a question that comes up is, what about the strike years (early 80's), when sitcoms had episodes held back that didn't get aired until laters seasons. This is the case with One Day at a Time, The Jeffersons, Alice and Diff'rent Strokes. In this case, production order makes more sense. Then there's shows that had episodes that never aired during its original run, like Good Times, Rhoda and Mr. Belvedere.

Really, I guess it depends on the show.

So what seems more logical:

Season 1
1. 1-1 001 14-Sep-1985 The Engagement (a.k.a) Pilot
2. 1-2 004 21-Sep-1985 Guess Who's Coming to the Wedding?

I would like production order better for the GG DVD set, because the lighting and makeup and hairstyle (for Sophia) are much different in the first 5 episodes or so... so I would like all of those at the beginning just because they are similar in that sense.

I agree. That's exactly what I meant above when I said they made more sense to watch them in production order. It's not necessarily about continuity(which Golden Girls was never known for anyway) but they just seem to flow better in production order. That's the best way I know to explain it. But no matter, even if they are in Airdate order on the DVDs I'll be ecstatic to get them! :) I'll also be watching them in production order.

OK, our reviewer for this set, skees53, has gotten the DVD today. He says it is in "airdate order." More info will be available in his review, which will be up later tonight or tomorrow. Keep checking back!

(Hint: Season 2 DVD is out this Spring ....)

Might as well ... Home Improvement S2 and Boy Meets World S3 will also be out this Spring, most likely in April. I have passed the info to TVShowsonDVD.com and they'll have something up soon.

This is great news!!! Wow, I can't believe we already have info for season two before season one is out. This gives me faith that we will have the whole series without any difficulties. Buena Vista has officially become my favorite TV on DVD company. :D

and great review, btw. Nice to hear the original opening credits are restored and that the episodes are indeed unedited. The special features sound pretty pitiful, but that's OK. As long as I get all 7 seasons unedited on DVD I don't really care if there are special features or not. Would be nice, but not required. THough you would think on a future release they would include the Reunion Special that aired on Lifetime a couple of years ago.

Thanks Pav, that's great, I bet they all come out the same day again, which is great too :D

Let's just hope that sales are healthy for both releases so that we'll get more seasons. Since Lifetime currently airs repeats of the show, I'm hoping against hope it doesn't hurt sales of the sets. As much as I'm grateful to be getting anything on the show, I don't want an incomplete series. I want the whole thing, plus The Golden Palace as well if we ever get that far....

I love the Golden Girls. It's my favorite sitcom of all time. And I hope for all 7 seasons to be released on DVD, and have high hopes that Buena Vista will release them, however, they can keep The Golden Palace. That show was a scar to the Golden Girls in my opinion. It wasn't the same without Dorothy, and without the house. None of the episodes stand out as being very good and the episode where Dorothy returns just seems like the writers were being spiteful to Bea Arthur for leaving. I just want The Golden Girls, all 7 seasons, and I'll be perfectly happy. :)

As would I, but I wouldn't mind have The Golden Palace included after we get the 7 seasons. It's not a necessity but it would be nice to complete the collection. Plus, when one of the cast members passes away, we're going to want any and all appearances of them, good or bad. I'd rather get it before something like that happens.

I suppose. I still don't think I would buy it, but hey, who knows. They may not even release it. I'm just so excited about Season One right now though I can barely contain it. Just one more week!!:D And all my classes were cancelled for 11/23, so I can just go pick up the set and spend the whole day with Dorothy, Rose, Blanche, and Sophia!:D

There was a release party 11/18 in LA for the DVD, and Bea, Betty and Rue were all there.

Read about it here (http://www.prnewswire.com/cgi-bin/stories.pl?ACCT=109&STORY=/www/story/11-19-2004/0002466500&EDATE=). Wouldn't this have been cool?!?!?!

You have no idea how much it warms my heart to see them all together again. After all that stuff about Betty and Bea, how ever much of it may or may not be true, I'm glad to see them put aside any differences for this occasion. It's just great to see the three of them together again. Sad that Estelle couldn't be there:(

Hey all...

As soon as I finished the morning coffee Tuesday, I went to Circuit City and bought the Golden Girls DVD set (picked up first three seasons of Seinfeld, too). As with many of you, I am thrilled at having uncut, un-interrupted episodes. I have all of the episodes on VHS, recorded off commercial TV, some from the original network run (after 1989) and some from the syndicated run. The first season is extremely important to me because I worked every Saturday nite back in 1985-86 when the show debuted and did not own a VCR at the time so this DVD set offers me my first look at the first season episodes as they originally aired.

A few observations...

1) I was startled when the opening credits began. After the brief scene with the sun and plane landing, the view of Miami was shown as the theme music got underway. I have never seen that particular view of Miami from any of the Golden Girls episodes aired in either prime-time or in syndication. Was anyone else surprised by this? Or do y'all even know what I'm talking about?

2) In "Guess Who's Coming to the Wedding," I noticed some lines and streaks and the DVD did a little skipping around the time that Dorothy begins squeezing Blanche's hand when she's upset with Stan. Did anyone else notice this?

3) Audio sounds great with this package.

Golden Girls is definitely a welcome addition to my DVD collection. I'll post more after I've viewed all of the discs.

i was taken back with the plane landing too. ive been told that the opening credits are different for each season! that will be cool to see. also there was a new scene in "guess whos coming to the wedding",(when rose and dorothy went into the kitchen with the knife) which was really cool because it was seeing it for the first time and i had almost forgotten what that felt like! but in regards to the skipping, it didnt happen on the dvd i got... hmmmm...

whatd you think about the joan and melissa commentary? i couldnt stand it so i didnt watch the whole thing..im sure i will eventually though..

I watched about 5 minutes of the fashion commentary and turned it off; it was horrible. What on earth was Buena Vista thinking? There was such excitement and anticipation over the DVD release, I felt the commentary was completely out of place. Everyone likes the Golden Girls...except for Joan and Melissa Rivers.

The fact the commentary was the ONLY special feature included made it even more puzzling.

Only thing I can think is someone in marketing was smoking some strange substance and thought the commentary was classy; I found it tacky, vile and vulgar.

I'm somewhat disappointed in the DVD. Sure it's great to have un-cut eps of GG on DVD...but no good special features. After buying many Friends seasons on DVD which are LOADED with special features...this is a letdown. Hopefully season 2 will be better.

I think the lack of features on this set was deliberate. It costs more money to invest in features on the production end, and they weren't sure whether it would be profitable for them to release The Golden Girls seeing as how re-runs on Lifetime still get high ratings. It doesn't make sense since other shows get the DVD treatment and still get high ratings as well, but most of those are current shows that don't require any polishing up, where as The Golden Girls, being an older show, does require some touching up. This adds to the cost on their end. If they added extras and stuff to these sets they'd have to jack up the price somewhat to make sure they made their money back, and they don't want to raise the price since they feel many would pass on the set.

Hopefully, if sales are more than healthy, we'll not only get all of the seasons released, but also much better features, and maybe some interviews and outtakes. In the meantime, they consider this release as a test. Hopefully it'll pass it...

That's not true. They spent the money on the dumbass fashion commentary, they could have surely used that to get some interviews from the "Golden Girls" themselves.

Uh, not to bemoan the obvious, but the 'cost' of that fashion commentary doesn't even begin to compare to the cost of interviews. For the interviews, unless they were done in the present day (and usually they're not; interviews of the present day are typically served as commentaries), they'd have to search for them and touch them up. They'd have to also credit and pay $$ out to the interviewers.

The fashion commentary, as silly as it is, cost practically nothing, especially in regards to restorative costs.

I'm getting this for Christmas...I can't wait!

To me, the Joan and Melissa featurette almost seems like a special they made for E! that never aired that they dusted off for the DVD. I read in Entertainment Weekly that Rue,Betty and Bea were not pleased that Joan & Melissa trashed the 80's fashions on the DVD. Bea's response was "What?? Have you seen the way Joan Rivers dresses??" And Rue said she still has most of the clothes and loves them. I hope future DVD editions will include scenes from E's "TV Tales: Golden Girls" - and excellent special that aired about 2 years ago featuring fresh interviews and lots of clips. Also, it would be lovely for them to include the Lifetime Reunion special that aired last year (which I missed twice!)... and finally, for the 7th season DVD, i'd love for them to include the 2-part Golden Palace episode in which Bea Arthur guest-starred. What a nice bonus that would be.

if Bea, Betty, and Rue were upset, then I wish they would try to force theirselves onto the people in charge of the DVDs and do some commentaries or behind the scenes documentaries or something. Anything would be better than more Joan/Melissa garbage.

I totally agree. Joan Rivers has gotten so tacky. In her recap of the Golden Globes, all she could say about Mick Jagger was "ew-those wrinkles! Mick,go home!" - sorry Joan, but not everyone is running to their plastic surgeons every 3 weeks. She no longer looks human and her mouth barely moves. Maybe Joan should stay hme and skip her next inevitable face-tweak before she runs out of skin to pull back. Even Bea Arthur decided after 1984 that she would never have another facelift.
I'd love to hear Terry Hughes or the girls do a commentary track on the Season 2 DVD...

When The Golden Girls started, that was the view of Miami which was used for the title screen. They changed that to the more common one in 1986 (Season 2), and that one remained until the end of the show.

MeLoveBea - the opening credits don't change every season. The first change is for Season 2 (as I mentioned, the title screen is updated, plus a couple of clips changed). Those credits were used until Season 5/6, when a couple more clips were changed, as the characters' looks altered. Interestingly, however, Beatrice Arthur's and Betty White's credit clips were never changed, despite their looks changing over the course of the show (especially in Bea's case). However, Rue McClanahan's and Estelle Getty's were changed a few times.

I got Season 2, but haven't started watching yet. It debuted on the DVD chart at No. 23 (per the chart that appears in Billboard, compiled by VideoScan). That's pretty decent, as I don't recall Season 1 cracking the top 40 (it was released during the busier sales period, the holiday season, though). Seinfeld (Season 4) entered at No. 2, which is the highest ranking for a TV series on the chart thus far.
