View Full Version : Facts of Life references on tv shows and movies. Some good, some bad.
DarthMaul'sDiciple 05-27-2004, 10:27 PM I can think of only 1 good refrence and 1 bad refrence relating to FOL and FOL characters.
The good. The Steve Harvey Show-Well, steve Harvey calls his lady friend at school Tootie and something like he asks her where Blair and Natalie are. I don't think there was any mention of Jo, though.
Jo's name as far as a FOL refrence goes was only mentioned in two movie I could recall, and one of the refrences I found very offensive for anyone who's a Jo fan.
Jo FOL refrence 1-Sleepaway Camp Part 2. Some snot-nosed punk kid mentions that he heard that the camp killer, a trans. gender girl who used to be a boy who became a girl, went to Hollywood to audition for the part of the dark-haired girl on Facts of Life. To me, that sounded very offensive.
Jo FOL refrence 2-Now this sounds sweeter, It came from the movie The Craft. Fairuza Balk's character mentions on this one scene that if she had the power to go back in time and make herself younger, she would go back to 1980 and snatch the role of Jo on the Facts of Life and put a wicked spell on Blair Warner.
Dean Winchester 05-27-2004, 10:44 PM Roseanne (1995) - the Connors, sans a very pregnant Roseanne, were watching FOL on tv, and Dan says "you know, this was the Friends of the 70's"
Fresh Prince Of Bel Air (90-91ish), I remember in the early seasons, there was an ongoing gag that Carlton's first crush was Tootie
Margaret Cho's "I'm The One That I Want" standup film (2000), Margaret talks about how she always thought Jo was such a lesbian and kept waiting for the episode that she had sex with Blair.
didn't Living Single also have a Tootie joke in an episode (Kim Fields was on it)

Peg from Married with children, call them the FAT girls on the Facts of Life

Yeah i think Kyle made a reference to Tootie in a Living Single episode
TALLguyinKY 05-29-2004, 06:33 PM "Mama's Family"---(Vint, Naomi, 'n Bubba wanna go bowling instead of to Cousin Ludi's funeral)...
Bubba: "We can dedicate the first frame to Cousin Tootie!"
Mama: "It's Cousin Ludi, Tootie was on 'The Facts of Life', now get outta here!"
LOL
"The Golden Girls"---The girls fire a black housekeeper but are afraid of a "mystic wrath", so when she leaves, Blanche says: "I just want you to know that Tootie was always my favorite on 'The Facts of Life'!"
lol

lol
isn't there also a GG episode where Dorothy was mad about something, then Rose (I think) asked why, and Dorothy replied sarcastically said "no, it's because they never repeated The Facts Of Life Down Under"
MandieR1980 05-29-2004, 08:29 PM Step By Step had a FOL reference in the episode where their TV breaks it was on a couple days ago. Can't remember exactly what was said.
JDS84 06-01-2004, 08:21 PM There has been FOL refernces on The Nanny. In two episodes to be exact...

I think one of the "Nanny" FOL references was when CC and Fran were locked on the cellar and Fran said something like This reminds me of when Blair and Tootie got locked in the freezer on The Facts of Life. Lucky for them Natalie came down for a late night snack. Something along those lines. I can't remember it perfectly.
Pet Rocks are Us 06-04-2004, 12:11 AM Where are all the Jo refrences? Where?
When they mention the girls by name, it's always Blair, Tootie and Natalie, with the occational Mrs. G or Mrs. Garrett. But they never mention Jo at all. I would like to hear a show refrence that they mention Jo in. And not the rude one from Sleepaway Camp part 2 either. And not the one from The Craft where Fairuza Balk wishes she was like Jo so she could punch out Robin Tunney's eye like on that one FOL scene where Jo punches out Blair's eye.
I want an actual tv show or series refrence to FOL Jo or Jo Polnaizchec. How else are we gonna remember her. With a diss? With Fairuza Balk as a Jo Polnaizchec wannabe? I wan't results.
FOL Fan 410 08-01-2004, 01:04 PM There was the one in wine cellar but also where Fran is talk to Gracie about going to an all girl bording school. and Fran goes I went its was great..and Gracie asks Oh who were your room mates Fran put on the spot (because she really never went to bording school) Says..."Ahhhh Blair, Jo, Tottie and Natalie!."

Fran said that Luckily Natalie came down for a midnight snack and Fran was like surprise surprise.
ILOVETV86 08-20-2004, 09:11 PM Thats not nice though that some shows make fun of THE FACTS OF LIFE. I think the actors-actresses that do make fun are just jealous cause the cast of TFOL is doing better in real life than the foul mouth bitches that make fun of them.

oh give me a break. I love when shows use FOL it keeps the show alive IMO
Dean Winchester 08-21-2004, 03:12 PM on a Family Guy episode, there was a joke about the toy company Peter works at. He proposed the idea of "Facts Of Life" transformer dolls, one of which was Natalie turning into a teridactel (I know that was spelled wrong).

another great one (that's coming up on Adult Swim soon) is the one where the family has three wishes (The name of the episode is Family Guy Viewer Mail #1 for anyone who wants to check the listings) anyway, the reference is in the second clip. in this one, the family is spilled by some toxic waste and develop super powers. Peter and the family stormed a town meeting and demanded that they erect a statue of Mrs. Garret and Blair in the town square. I don't know what the line was exactly, but it had something to do with Mrs. Garrett lecturing Blair. anyway, they cut to the park where they show the statue, but Peter says it's all wrong and transforms into Mrs. Garrett's rack and said "This is what her rack should look like....and there THREE SUN SPOTS over on the left breast." something along those lines. so then, at the end of the episode, the mayor is laying in the hospital, and Peter and his family come to visit him. I don't know why, but Peter changes into Mrs. Garrett's rack again (lol) and says "Girls! Girls! Girls!" it was hilarious.
maryfan5 08-23-2004, 07:04 PM This past season on Saturday Night Live, Maia Rudolph played a drunk Diana Ross getting a sobreity test outside Blockbusters. She tells the officers she had just come from a Canyon Ranch health spa with her best friend Tootie, her dog Tootie, and Tootie from Facts of Life. Then she says, "Wow -- I have 3 Tooties in my life!"
Also, several seasons ago, when Michael J. Fox hosted SNL, Chris Farley played Natalie in a skit about 80's sitcom stars.
Gemini_89 04-08-2016, 04:17 PM Amazing! Especially with the Tootie and Jo references
MaryAnnBerry 04-14-2016, 11:30 PM I remember an episode of Newhart when Larry (brother of Darryl and Darryl) had a near death experience and said that God looked like Tootle from the Facts of Life. Then at other points in the episode, he would make remarks about what "Tootie" would want or say.
'80sSitcoms 04-15-2016, 09:51 AM ^---yes, Larry says he saw God and when they asked what God looked like, he says, "Ya know that girl on 'Facts of Life'---Tootie? Kinda like her!"
And then Dick says, "Then what everyone says i--is true." lol
Then later when Dick questions something Larry says, "Tootie works in mysterious ways".
And finally, when Dick and Joanna are in bed and Larry climbs up on a ladder outside their bedroom window to watch over Dick and make sure he's okay, Dick tells him to go away but Larry says, "But I answer to a higher power---Tootie!" lol
Tootie 04-20-2016, 09:25 PM There was this reference in South Park:
Mr. Garrison was teaching the students about the Facts of Life. he states that Tootie left in the fourth season.
He also states that Jo and Blair stayed on the show, and got married leaving Season 4 & 5 stagnant.
To clarify the Golden Girls, Blanche said, "I just want you to know, Tootie's my favorite on The Facts Of Life." And in the other episode, "No, I'm upset because they haven't rerun The Facts of Life Goes to Australia."
On The King of Queens, Carrie tells Doug that her boss made her watch a Facts of Life marathon when he was over their house.
Ohio8 08-16-2016, 06:53 PM "Married...with Children": The theme show was heard in two of the later seasons'
episodes, and I think that Al sang along with it in one of the two.
fol_fan1989 08-17-2016, 09:17 PM In an episode of Gilmore Girls in one of the early seasons, Lorelai is bemoaning having to do something with her parents, I think, and says something like, "It's going to be a bad Lifetime movie and Nancy McKeon will be playing me. I am Jo."
FOL85NatandMrsGRock 08-22-2016, 01:48 AM Where are all the Jo refrences? Where?

In scrubs, JD calls Denise "Jo the tough talking street-wise girl from facts of life" for several episodes. Also, ted's band sings the facts of life theme song.
Wildchats 02-02-2017, 01:55 PM I think on Roseanne, she replied to Dan or something like "Yeah, but then they went to Australia and the show just bombed after that."
'80sSitcoms 07-17-2018, 03:30 PM On another episode of The Nanny, there's this exchange between Fran and Maggie:
Fran: What's with the unga-blues-onaputum?
Maggie: Unga-what?
Fran: Sourpuss. You know, it's a face like that that kept Molly Ringwald from a film career as an adult.
 I laugh in good spirits...not a direct "Facts" reference, but it is a reference of one of our girls.
RetroGuy2000 07-17-2018, 04:42 PM There was this reference in South Park:

I don't really care for South Park, but this truly was a genuinely funny moment. Here, the kids are supposed to be learning sex education, and the teacher is talking about the TV show instead. He doesn't even get his facts right: It was Mrs. G who left in season 8, leaving the show stagnant.

But Molly did have a film career as an adult, so Fran is just plain wrong! As wrong as Mr Garrison when he says Tootie left in the fourth season.

But unfortunately, not a big one. I think they mean the joke as in the fact that she fell from A-lister status as far as box office success/receipts go. Like her moodiness didn't translate well into adulthood, lol.

Well, that's a valid point. I apologize, Miss Fine, wherever you are!
There were several references to the show on Late Night with David Letterman.
David Letterman, Iggy Pop, Marilu Henner, Robert Morton and Gerard Mulligan talk about "The Facts of Life Down Under" in a parody round table discussion. Talk shows were discussing the "Amerika" ABC TV miniseries starring Kris Kristofferson at the time, which was airing opposite it.

ChrisW 05-08-2022, 02:22 AM I'm blanking on which episode of "The Simpsons" it was, but Lisa's future self was listing the accomplishments of her life and the biggest one was getting a reunion of the FoL girls, including long-time hold-out Tootie.

Ha! Little did they know Tootie wouldn't be the hold-out. It'd be Nancy M. or Molly!
