OH. MY. GOD. You have no idea how excited I am to hear this...no idea. Alf was my absolute favorite childhood show, and I still love it to death today. I'm so freakin' happy that I'll be able to watch this show again, and hopefully get all 4 seasons on DVD. Just thrilled...wow. My other major childhood favorite, Punky Brewster, is being released on Tuesday, so I'm double excited.

What an awesome year this is shaping up to be for TV on DVD! We also got Freaks & Geeks and Gilmore Girls. And SCTV, Laverne & Shirley, Happy Days, Diff'rent Strokes, Boy Meets World are coming up, and who knows what else will be announced later this year? I hear Fox is interested in doing a Wonderfalls DVD set! Maybe Judith Moose will persuade Sony to release Silver Spoons, or maybe Fox will finally get the Malcolm in the Middle music problems taken care of, and release more seasons. Maybe Carsey-Werner will finally start releasing shows. ::crosses fingers::

Plus we should be getting more Simpsons, Married with Children, Saved by the Bell, Will & Grace, etc.

Sorry for the ridiculously long, incoherent post...that Alf news really pumped me up. Thanks for posting that, pavanbadal!

Ever since the first release The Alf Files, I've been waiting for another now finally season sets! It's about time, I notice Warner Brothers isn't releasing it but Lions Gate Entertainment, which is a good company. Warner Brothers better get on the stick because they are releasing other distributors shows and are making the big bucks. Oh well, this is a push and shove for Warner Brothers to release MAma's Family, Growing Pains, and more.

I just hope I have enough money this summer to buy these shows on dvd because alot of my favorites are coming out this summer, like I love Lucy S2, Here's Lucy, Alf, Punky Brewster, Who's the Boss. And too think the summer has barely started yet.

IT'S ABOUT TIME, ALF ON DVD!!!!!!

This is great news indeed. I was just watching me at age 8 watching ALF on my vcr earlier today LOL in old family movies I converted to DVD, and now I find out that it is coming to DVD! This was the best of the best in my book! This was one of the first few shows I really loved and my parents recorded for me :)

I am buying it the first day it comes out. This is going to be the year for 80's shows on DVD!

Punky, Who's the Boss, Alf, Diff'rent Strokes...What's next? I know Silver Spoons isn't that far off, but within the next year hopefully Silver Spoons, Facts of Life, and Gimme A Break will be added from shows that were on in the 80's on NBC!

I'd love to see Small Wonder and Mr. Belvedere on DVD, but since Fox owns them, I'm not holding my breath waiting for it to happen. I believe they are picky with their releases, especially comedies. They're not even sure they want to release Dharma & Greg...so I don't think these 80s syndicated shows have much of a chance. Unless, of course, some other company acquires the rights and releases them.

As for Silver Spoons, I think Sony is having doubts about releasing it, but Judith Moose is meeting with them in July to try and convince them that it is a good idea. She has a petition that you can sign at TVshowsonDVD.com or tvtome.com

Relax, Idol Fanatic. $40 is just the MSRP, the stores will definitely be selling it at a cheaper price. To give you a comparison, I believe the MSRP for Punky Brewster: Season 1 was $35, but it sold in stores for around $25, which is very cheap for a full 22 episode season set, with extras to boot! I expect the Alf sets to sell in stores for around $30 or so.

I have just found out that the extra pilot episode is indeed the unaired pilot! So, the set will have the unaired pilot as an extra, and of course, the aired pilot we have seen. Great news!

And the gag reel will be about 5 minutes in length. Look for our ALF review late next week hopefully!

I'm worried about the length of each episode. The scant few ALF episodes I have on tape (obtained in a trade) from the original broadcasts run approximately 24 minutes without commercials. Other shows from that time frame seem to be the same as well (i.e. 227, Amen, Golden Girls). However the review mentioned that episodes run between 20 and 22 minutes. What's up with that? Edited episodes suck, plain and simple and there is no excuse to release them on a dvd unless the master videotape is gone, which I doubt it is from a show that isn't even 20 years old yet. I will have to do some careful research before purchasing. I was looking very forward to this set, but now have some doubts.

It sounds to me like these episodes may have gotten cut down a little bit for some reason since there suppose to be 24 minutes a piece but I will still buy Alf season 1.I can't imagine why they would cut them without commercials thou.

I'm worried about that too. :( I love Alf and am definitely buying this set no matter what...but I will be very disappointed if it turns out that these episodes are edited from the original airings. If this is the case, then Lions Gate better have some explination for it. I want the FULL episodes, not the inferior syndication edits. It does seem kinda odd, considering that show creator Paul Fusco was involved in production of the DVD. I wonder how he feels about this...?

While annoying, I wouldn't be surprised if this is true about the edits. According to some Saved by the Bell fans, some of the episodes on the Seasons 3/4 set (also released by Lions Gate) are edited from their original airings, with scenes missing.

Well, I've seen the NBC version of the season 1 Alf episode "Strangers in the Night" MANY times back in the day, so I'll be watching very closely looking for any cuts on that episode. 20-22 minutes sounds fishy...if some eps originally ran for 24 minutes, and are only 20 now...well that just stinks.

well...

I know that the pilot episode SHOULD begin with Willie walking out to the garage, telling the store of "the night, that 'he' came"...
in the ORIGINAL airing, we see him walking out alone to the garage, then the kids and Kate come in later, but on the DVD, it begins, just like the syndicated cut, with Willie and Kate already being in the garage.

the DVD is... CENSORED.

so im advising all of you, DONT buy it unless you want stinky, syndicated prints of the episodes.

We should all complain to Lion's Gate Films and tell them that we want UNCUT episodes.

Well,

I won't buy it if they are edited. The only excuse for releasing edited versions of a show is if the original masters are gone. I'm pretty sure that this is not the case with ALF. As much as I like this show, I will wait for unedited versions or simply do without.

There's a possibility that Lion's Gate never told him. But it does leave one scratching their head as to why Fusco let this happen.

It does leave one with satisfaction that Fusco is not pleased. Fusco's Alien Production should've in the first place released the set themselves. I don't understand why Lion's Gate owns the right to the show anyway.

But there's probably a logical story behind that as well. It's hard to tell.

I do know that this isn't the first time Lion's Gate Entertainment has made the same mistake. They released edited episodes of Combat! before.

Hopefully, Fusco can get to the bottom of this as Lion's Gate isn't really telling the whole truth as to why they did this. All they say is that they didn't feel like going through the hassel of getting the original masters and then from there cleaning them up and preparing them for tranfer to DVD.

I'm thinking that Lion's Gate pulled the wool over Fusco's eyes and intentionally did this. But if Lion's Gate owns the rights to the show then Fusco can't do a damn thing about it.

Now I'm kinda confused. Back in March (of this year of course) TVShowsOnDVD.com posted a wrap-up of a Warner Bros chat complete with a list of shows that were being released this year, being worked on, in discussion, or no plans for release at all at this time, and ALF was on the list of titles that there were no plans for at that time. Here's what I took from my original post:

This is taken from the article posted at www.tvshowsondvd.com about the recent Warner Bros. chat.

No plans for release at this time
- The Adventures of Brisco County, Jr. (1993-1994)
- ALF (1986-1990)
- Beetlejuice (1989-1991)
- Birds of Prey (2003)
- Brimstone (1998-1999)
- Bucky O'Hare (1992)
- CNN's Cold War (1998)
- Fish Police (1992)
- The Flash (1990-1991)
- Freddy's Nightmares (1988-1990)
- Growing Pains (1985-1992)
- Justice League (2001-current) [16x9; box sets]
- Off Centre (2001-2003)
- Perfect Strangers (1986-1993)
- Run of the House (2003-current)
- Thundercats (1985-1987)
- Xiaolin Showdown (2003-current)

********
And here's a link to the article http://www.tvshowsondvd.com/newsitem.cfm?NewsID=1224

So, like I said, I'm confused. Could it be maybe that Lions Gate only has the syndie episodes and Warner Bros. have the master tapes? Ugh, I don't know. I just thought it was weird that both Lions Gate and Warner Bros. both the rights to ALF.

Screenwriter

I think Warner Brothers own the distribution rights (broadcast) and Paul Fusco owns the title to be able to produce ALF programs at his will.

It could be a joint ownership.

I think it might be more effective to actually write to them the old fashion way rather than just e-mailing them.

I got this address of the back of the DVD case:

Lions Gate Entertainment
2700 Colorado Avenue
Santa Monica, California
90404

Heres the letter I'm sending to them:

Dear Lions Gate Home Entertainment

When I bought the ALF season one DVD set, I was very disappointed to discover that you used the edited syndication versions of the episodes instead of the original NBC airings. I’m not sure if you’re aware of this, but the syndication episodes present on the DVD are each missing about 2 or 3 minutes worth of footage. I immediately returned the set to the store and informed all the ALF fans I knew about it. However, I would gladly buy the set again if the uncut episodes were used. I’m very glad that you decided to release this show on DVD, and I’m sure that everyone would be very happy if you corrected this problem.

Sincerely
Dane Clark

I strongly recommend that everyone write letters to them like this one.

Lost cause is probably right. I've sent e-mails to Rhino and VSC (the company that produced "The Alf Files") wondering if they'd be inclined to produce an uncut version of season 1. Unfortunately there's been no replies. Ah well, I'll have to be content with the shows I taped when it was first shown and transfer them to DVD myself.

I was also a little disapointed when I found out they have cut the episodes of ALF, but quit complaining about. It seems to me you people have way to much time on your hands and nothing really important to worry about. If you keep complaining about it then they will probably not release a second, third, or fourth season. SO KEEP YOUR MOUTH CLOSED, PLEASE.

Be thankful they released the series on dvd, and now your complaining about it. Don't even count on a re-release of season one for the show, do you even understand how much that would cost.

BE THANKFUL FOR WHAT YOU'VE GOT!!!!

you must have things mixed up, it is not CENSORED, it's syndicated. They had to cut 2 minutes of air time on the show to be seen on television because president clinton passed a law in 1995 to give more room for commercials. Censorship is where they cut out parts of the show that MAY BE OFFENSIVE to others.

THE DVD SET IS NOT CENSORED!!!!

Maybe for the them to even distribute the series on DVD they had to use the syndicated episodes, who knows, maybe Warner Brothers would not allow them to have the full length episodes because they didn't want some other company making a profit off of their series.

Well I guess there goes a chance for more releases for ALF through Lions Gate., people just can't stop.

What I don't understand is, if Warner Bros. owns the show, then why didn't they release it? I think if we should be complaining to anyone, we should be complaining to them.

It seems that Warner Brothers are not releasing any of their shows on DVD. The only show I have seen that Warner is releasing is Friends. I've noticed they are about the only production company that really isn't releasing any of their shows.

I don't understand it myself, they are probably making a huge profit off of their Friend's set so they really don't need to release any other show. The Friend's sets should be done very soon only 2 more seasons to be announced to be released on dvd. Then maybe they will star releasing their other shows. I am so sick of hearing about Friends.

Does anyone know how to contact Paul Fusco? I'm interested in seeing what he has to say about all this.

As someone who had no idea about the fact the eps were edited down by 2 minutes until coming on here today and reading this thread, all I can say is that it made absolutely no difference to me when I got Season 1 on DVD. I guess ignorance is bliss, but I certainly don't think I missed out on anything.. the episodes entertained me fine.

I agree that people should be grateful for what is put out.. we've come a long way from the days when all these classic shows looked as if they were doomed to lie in dusty vaults for eternity.. we should be thankful for the advent of DVD! :)

I watched the ALF season one dvd over the last few days. I knew the episodes were cut but badly wanted to see the show. I forgot how funny ALF is. For about £12 including postage I thought the price wasn't bad for cut episodes. I would have preferred un cut but that option was not available.

I don't have any of the DVD's, but it would be cool with an ALF DVD collection!
