View Full Version : TVGuide lists Freaks & Geeks #25 Cult Show
vashti1999 05-26-2004, 09:48 PM Freaks and Geeks just made TV Guide's list of the top 25 Cult Shows:
Imagine a high school where cool freaks and tragicomic geeks were equally complicated, likable and entertaining. Actually, real high school was like that--you just didn't know it until this brilliant show came along. Cult-ability: A dvd set contains commentary from obsessive fans, and a book of the show's scripts is coming soon.
 on the book of scripts. As for the TV Guide list, some other personal faves: My So Called Life was #16 and Pee-Wee's Playhouse was #10. The rest of their top 10 list:
9.Xena Warrior Princess
8.Twilight Zone
7.The Prisoner
6.The Simpsons
5.Monty Python's Flying Circus
4.Farscape
3.Buffy The Vampire Slayer
2.X-Files
1.Star Trek
vashti1999 05-29-2004, 11:17 PM Here's the text of The Freaks & Geeks profile page of that year's Fall Preview TV Guide, Sept 1999:
Premise: Do you ever wonder how you survived your wonder years? Set in 1980 at a Michigan high school, this evocative hour-long comedy-drama focuses on a maladjusted brother and sister. Freshman Sam is one of the geeks, nerdy but sweet and longing to belong. Sophomore Lindsay is a pensive brainiac who has begun to rebel and hang with the freaks, for whom school spirit usually means something that could get you suspended.
They Say: "It's a funny show, but...it's not about jokes and not about writers in their thirties thinking about what they could have said when they were that age. We don't want Neil Simons walking around the halls," says series creator Paul Feig, an actor-turned-writer-director who based the show on his own at-times painful adolescence. "It's the kind of comedy that's not funny when you're going through it, but it's funny with time and distance." Feig says he keeps hearing that "kids are having sex earlier and they're so much more mature. I think people are just lying about it more."
We Say: Hands down the best of the fall's new crop of teen shows, this sharply observed memoir is as likely to appeal to adults (who have all been there) as to kids, if that is, anyone can find it on Saturday nights. Funny and tender and often achingly real, this is a show to root for and to fight from getting the premature hook.
Pretty prophetic, that last sentence.

Interesting list, but aren't "cult shows" supposed to be programs that never had large viewership? The Simpsons is a pretty successful show.
I guess they mean shows with a loyal or rabid fanbase.
I just answered my own question I guess.
I'll shut up now.
;)

Okay TVShow Analyzer, I'm getting sick and tired of you and your attitude. The majority of your posts consist mostly of you shoving your opinions down our throats and trying to pass them off as fact. It's getting old.
I can't tell if you're joking with this particular post and to be honest I don't care. Telling someone nobody "gives a whatever" about a show they obviously care about isn't right. Get over yourself, buddy.

The thing is Va****99 has a habit of staring fights with me out of nowhere so now i'm going to do the same to show i can be annoying too. I get along with 97% of the members on here and never look for fights. But sometimes Jackasses appear out of nowhere.
Stop the fights and insults immediately Solomon or you will be suspended, no more warnings.

Let the record show I've never sent a pm to the above poster, while he has pm'ed me twice, both of which I've never read nor responded to. If my intention was "staring (sic) a fight" one would think that the opposite would be the case. By the way, one of the pm's I received from the above poster has nothing but asterisks in the subject line, so assume he's directing curses at me. Regardless, TJ I appreciate the fact that you've restored a bit of order to the boards and you can be sure that none of my posts are intended to incite whatever negativity the above poster is accusing me of.

tvfan0101 05-30-2004, 06:29 PM Back on topic...
I picked up this issue of TV Guide after this thread was started but it didn't really register until I flipped through. I'm glad to see Freaks and Geeks getting some recognition and I agree that The Simpsons really doesn't belong on any "cult" listing. The series is the polar opposite of cult, actually.
Re-re-rewatching the pilot to Freaks and Geeks as I write this.

Just don't reply to none of my threads and everything should be ok. Also put me on your ignore list. Thanks

I believe I'm free to post in whatever thread I'd like.

Well the fact that we don't get along I thought that you SKIPPING my threads would prevent future arguments.

I don't have a problem getting along with you. Some of the things I've posted may have been taken the wrong way by you, but I don't think I've ever insulted you, called you names or used profanity towards you. I can disagree with you without disrespecting you.

OK well maybe i took your question the wrong way when you asked why wasn't that question on the Maude Board. I thought you were being sarscastic.
PrettyinPink55 06-13-2005, 09:45 AM Freaks and Geeks-definetly a cult show, and I'm not ashamed to say I'm so in that cult!
Sophie Treadmill 07-20-2007, 12:55 PM Sigh. I loved this show, I really wish it hadn't been cancelled. I remember a couple of years ago in Austin they showed a marathon of the show at the Alamo Drafthouse.
I think a couple of the actors from the main cast were there as well recurring characters. I remember stepping outside during one of the breaks and the guy that played the hippie guidance counselor struck up a conversation with my husband and I. I didn't realize who it was until "fans" started crowding around him, asking questions. Hubby and I politely moved to the side. :D
He also had somewhat of a recurring role on the Gilmore Girls as well.
I couldn't stay for the whole thing because they ran it for nineteen hours straight, showing every episode consecutively, but I stayed for several and it was well worth the admission.

Whoa! That sounds awesome! I wish I could have been there? Is the Alamo Drafthouse a bar?.....The only thing I've seen that's kind of in that category was the Seinfeld internet cafe, in my neighborhood. They played nothing but Sienfeld episodes all day and night.
And the hippie guy was cool. I remember him from Gilmore Girls as well. He gave the town Troubador some competition, and then later on opened up some kind of fruit stand or something, that made Taylor mad. Haha!....He came back every so often.
Sophie Treadmill 07-24-2007, 10:51 AM Yes! I didn't even realize he'd been of GG at the time, because I watch it in syndication. That's my one and only celeb story. I think he also married Luke's sister in the medieval-themed wedding.
The Alamo Drafthouse is a movie theatre, but it serves food, appetizers, beer, etc while you watch the movie. They seem to have a pretty good system worked out so that others aren't disturbed while you order and receive food during the movie. It's a really cool place--- but they don't usually show mainstream releases, mostly indie movies, documentaries, or old stuff like Reefer Madness.
ETA: Ironically enough, I forgot, I have met one other celeb which was Regina Taylor. She was in I'll Fly Away, which I spoke of in my London twins post. It was very brief, I was interning at a theatre company and she was directing. She was told it was my birthday and came over to wish me Happy Birthday. That was it. Oh, and I also handed her a phone book when she asked for one. Hee!

Haha! That's funny!
The dude didn't marry Luke`s sister though. That was another guy.....ABCFAMILY is showing the 3rd season right now, btw (if you want to watch those episodes to refresh for the last 2 seasons).
And The Alamo Drafthouse seems like an awesome place to hang out.
Sophie Treadmill 07-24-2007, 02:49 PM Thanks for the correction! I guess my memory was fuzzy. :p
I wished I got downtown (Austin) more often, because the Alamo Drafthouse is such a fun place to hang out.
I really liked season 3. I need to start watching it to brush up for the last two seasons. :)
I love the idea of a Seinfeld internet cafe!
