Although this not my favorite list of sitcoms, this is what I think are truly the 100 greatest sitcoms on the planet. The Best of the Best!

When putting these sitcoms in order, I often had this question in the back of my mind: What makes this sitcom to be one of the bests? Nonetheless, this how I figured it for number of reasons:

~ Did it make a huge impact on television?
~ Is it easily recognizeable?
~ Is it apart of American Pop Culture?
~ How long did it last?
~ Was it groundbreaking?
~ Who was apart of the show? (i.e. actors, producers, creators, ect.) Did it have an icon?
~ Were their valuable lessons taught?
~ How successful has it done in reruns?
~ How successful was it in the original run?
~ Did it have any of television's firsts?


With all that said, enjoy looking at this list. Here we go!

The Best special effects show of the 1960's. The longest-running fantasy sitcom.

You guys should be happy. I thought it would be just shows from the 50s and 60s but he actully put so 80s 90s and 2000s shows.

Its not the best series of all time -- but it started it all.

I absolutely agree with you there.

I did like California Dreams but don't feel it should be on the list (same for SBTB: The New Class). Is the original on there? I also think Beverly Hills, 90210 is most recognized for being a teen primetime soap of the 90s.

But overall, not a bad list, and I Love Lucy deserves the #1 spot. I mean, she had a baby (you couldn't even say pregnant) she was in an interracial marriage and really just overall set the standards for sitcoms and reruns in general.

Good choices, some are dubious, but not bad. I'm actually floored LucyFan put The Facts of Life on that list!

Some of the shows I think you listed do deserve to be ahead of M*A*S*H

I think Friends deserves to be ahead of M*A*S*H.
I think Full House deserves to be ahead of M*A*S*H.

But The Munsters, The Addams Family, and Will and Grace dont deserve to be ahead of M*A*S*H The Munsters and The Addams Family, no matter how you look at it, were short-lived sitcoms. They might be classics, but they were short-lived, they only lasted 2 years. And Will & Grace, in my opinion, isnt that great. I dont care much for shows that circle their jokes around sex, gays, and lesbians.

While I think some of your choices are absolutely insane (i.e. Dinosaurs, California Dreams, Brady Bunch being #3 and Ellen in the top 10, etc.) you did include Family Ties, Mama's Family, Growing Pains, and Cheers (all of my favorites), so the list is ok. However Cheers should be much higher up and I generally disagree with the order you put the shows in.

I agree with the list except The Cosby Show was not good enough long enough.

That spot belongs to Seinfeld which was of the most groundbreaking shows of all time and one of the most critically aclaimed.

Just because Cosby broke ground doesn't mean crap when your last 3 seasons sucked.

Exactly. This isn't supposed to be a list of favorite 100 sitcoms, it is supposed to be the 100 greatest. No matter how hard one were to try there is no possible way Full House or Friends could be seen as "greater" than M*A*S*H. I'll admit that I'm an avid M*A*S*H fan and, were this a favorite list I'd demand M*A*S*H be at the top. I do conceed that, while the series is one of the greatest sitcoms of all time in my mind, it isn't the greatest and others deserve to be a bit higher. I Love Lucy and All In The Family come to mind.

I love Friends, I really do, but I can't wrap my head around it being "greater" than M*A*S*H, and the idea of Full House being greater than M*A*S*H is laughable. I'm not saying Full House is a horrible series (I can hardly stand to watch it due to my hatred of late 80s/early 90s clothing) but it just doesn't belong high on a list of 100 greates sitcoms of all time.

the only difference with Friends and Will And Grace is that the men on W&G are gay IMO. I do think Friends was a funnier show because Will and Jack have never been anything except walking stereotypes

this list was Lucy's opinion. I have to admit I'd rather watch Addams Family, Munsters, Friends and Wonder Years than watch M*A*S*H too. M*A*S*H is a good show, but much like Cheers, Friends, All In The Family and Seinfeld, not everyone loves it.

Again, according to the title of this thread, the list was the "100 Greatest Sitcoms of All-Time" not "My Favorite 100 Sitcoms of All-Time". Everyone not loving M*A*S*H has very little to do with a list of the greatest sitcoms of all time. If the list were LucyFan's 100 favorite sitcoms I would be out of place to say the list was wrong. As it is, I think commenting on the list is perfectly acceptable.

even tho I will say Cheers, Mash and Seinfeld should've all been higher, I will defend her top 10

Ellen may seem like the "Weak link" in the list, but for anyone who is gay or lesbian, the importance of what her series did cannot be underestimated. Lucy deserves #1, Archie deserves #2. Brady Bunch may not be a "great series", but can you deny it's impact? Andy Griffith has NEVER gone away, one of the most popular syndicated shows ever. Happy Days the same. The Simpsons has been on for 15 years and has a cult following only surpassed by Star Trek, X-Files and Buffy. Ellen completely opened the doors for wider acceptance of gays and lesbians. Mary Tyler Moore revolutionized the role of women on television. Gilligan's Island is another show that is not a "great series", but you cannot deny it's everlasting popularity. Three's Company is also a classic, just consider the responce John Ritter's death got, it was Jack Tripper that made him such a tv icon in the first place.

Every single one of her shows in the top 10 belongs there, even tho I do think she could've squeezed Cheers, Seinfeld and MASH up a bit and a few others down a notch or three.

I'm fine with people commenting on this list. A good discussion over the list wouldn't hurt. I and maybe others might gain insight through it all.

Again, I want to make this clear: this is not "my favorite shows" list, otherwise shows like The Cosby Show, Friends, All In The Family, Ellen, The Simpsons, ect. would have never made it into the Top 20.

3. Cheers (possibly the world's most beloved sitcom)

1. I Love Lucy (started it all)

with Frasier in a close 6 for the most honored show of all time.

I disagree, because Friends deserves to be on their if youre gonna go by ratings, it's been in the top 5 it's whole run, and I don't care how much Frasier was honored, IMO that doesn't make it a good sitcom

Am I the only one who wouldn't put I Love Lucy as number 1?? I think All in the Family Deserves #1 more than Lucy does. And in general, I like Lucy more than AITF, but I think AITF was the better all around show. ILL had too many annoying cliches.

Ratings dont matter to me, neither do awards.
But there's no doubt that Frasier (at least in the first 7 years) is the smartest written show ever.
Doesn't necessarily make it a better series.

According to you, this list is not a favorites list. It's a quality list. I think AITF was the better sitcom overall. Doesn't mean I like it better.
