Uhhhhh, NO! This is it:

Now the world don't move to the beat of just one drum,
What might be right for you, may not be right for some.
A man is born, he's a man of means,
Then along come two, they got nothin' but their jeans.
But they got Diff'rent Strokes
It takes, Diff'rent Strokes
It takes, Diff'rent Strokes to move the world.

Everybody's got a special kinda story,
Everybody finds a way to shine.
It don't matter that you got not a lot- so what?
They'll have theirs, you'll have yours and I'll have mine.
And together we'll be fine,
Cause it takes Diff'rent Strokes to move the world, yes it does,
It takes Diff'rent Strokes to move the world!

I'm going to say jeans. My reasoning is it rhymes with means.

Julian, your "reasoning" is a head-shaker. Jeans rhymes with means, but genes doesn't? Do you have some explanation for that conclusion that I've missed?

I think it's jeans. It's a play on the phrase "nothing but the shirt on your back". I mentioned this debate to a friend whom I usually agree with, thinking she would laugh at the idea that people think it's "genes", but she thinks it's genes, too. If anyone runs into Alan Thicke someday, be sure to ask him, since he co-wrote the song.

That makes sense.-- Don't you all think that genes would be a rather complex concept inside of an otherwise simplistic lyric? I'll bet that if you polled a bunch of ten year olds you wouldn't get many to go along with, genes.

I heard Allan Thicke once half jokingly apologize to everyone from the Diff'rent Strokes cast and crew for torturing them every week with that theme song.
