Reality shows 'crass', says Frasier

Former Frasier star Kelsey Grammer is no fan of reality television shows.

He thinks it’s too bad that audiences are tuning into these degrading shows and that TV bosses can only attract large viewing numbers by unleashing an endless stream of “crass” reality programs.

He says: "No one has cracked the nut of how to get viewership without being sensational or crass. Unfortunately, audiences are responding to people behaving badly."

I have to agree with Kelsey on this.

I detest reality series. I think it's all about instant fame, and not long-lasting. I peeped over on another message board, and I was sick to see over 100 posts over the current season of American Idol, while not one person discussed the end of shows like Friends, Frasier, The Practice or Angel. Friends and Frasier both ran on for a decade, yet people would rather discuss flash-in-the-pan people NOBODY GAVE A CRAP ABOUT FOUR MONTHS AGO... and will more than likely be forgotten in 10 years.

I prefer sitcoms 100x over reality shows.
Although I am a fan of two reality shows (Survivor & The Amazing Race)

With Frasier leaving tonight, and the future of Arrested Development unclear -- TV will have no sophisticated and classy shows anymore.
Its all about the instant gratification.

But like they said on the Dateline: Frasier Signing Off Special.... we're not making the show for 2 weeks from now, we're making it for 20 years from now.
And 262 episodes have been gold.... here's to hoping the finale lives up :Cheers:

But I agree with Mr. Grammar and the two posters above me -- reality TV is, by and large, an awful excuse for television that, to be quite honest, makes me feel a little dumber whenever I see any (aside from that nifty "Who Wants To Be A Playboy Bunny" special that was on once).

Kudos to you, Mr. Grammar, for being an all-around classy act.

Exactly, and it's a damn shame. We have men and women from The Bachelor, The Bachelorette and a host of other reality shows being labeled 'celebrities.' Trista Renn says she's turning her back on Hollywood. Huh? She went on national television to snag herself a husband, for crying out loud.. :rolleyes:

Anyhow, I have to agree with Kelsey Grammer as well.

I think I am having a deja blow.

I mean American Idol is the most tolerable in the sense that people are actually trying to perform. As in contrast to a bunch of nobodies that I might have interest in seeing making the most of their 2 minutes of fame jumping around or trying to make nice to a pretty boy or girl.

Uggh.

Reality is all around you. You can see your friends and colleagues make their own assinine decisions everyday.

We don't need help from TV.

Apparently people don't have a lot of friends or don't know how to occupy their time.

I've ALWAYS hated reality shows...and the sudden rash of makeover shows...GET AWAY.

Reality shows went even further down the crapper (it was already pretty far down at this point) when they got some lady...Ummm...M something...Meredith? to be on the Bachelorette, who looks EXACTLY like my VERY EX-best friend. OMG.....NO. I don't need this. F*CK them all. The bad memories come back 100x worse when her f*cking ugly face is on TV... No no no no....Everybody in the reality TV business needs to die right now. Tis a shame that's what their highlight of the week is doing...

Amen. It's not entertainment, it's slowly killing yourself. YOU CALL THIS ENTERTAINMENT?! Psssssh. I could have more fun fighting the bully from my school than to watch some reality show that's gonna bomb within the next few episodes..

The makeover shows.. oh for the love of god, tell me about it. The Swan, Extreme Makeover: You name 'em, they're out there and they need to go. The networks are trying to one-up each other and it's getting ridiculous.

The only reality show that I think has any class is The Amazing Race, because its never about backstabbing or getting made into something your not.
Its a competition just like any other sporting event.
A really LONG competition, but very entertaining.

The only other reality show I like is Survivor.... and I only like that for the competitions.

the only reality shows i watch are the apprentice (which will probably only have been good the first season anyway), american idol (which only gets good the last few shows) and extreme makeover: home edition (they always pick people who really need a great home). other than that it's strictly sitcoms for me

:nod: I only like Trading Spaces. THAT'S ALL. TS has been on since the fall of 2000, longer than any other reality shows out there. And it's not even a reality show- it's just a home makeover show. If you can remember when Alex McLeod was the host and Dez Ryan was still one of the designers on TS, then you HAVE been watching it for a long time.

That's IT. I DO like While You Were Out (on since early 2001), but I like TS better. And even Trading Spaces needs work now - all those designers and carpenters are getting overwhelming! :crazy: What happened to having 8-10 designers and 2 carpenters? Now they're up to...oh I don't know...20 designers and FOUR carpenters!!! PLUS, they have a Family edition and I don't even like that either. I prefer the ORIGINAL.

I like Trading Spaces in the sense that the homeowners WANT to makeover a room, and the results are always really great, and both homeowners love it (98% of the time, anyway ;)).

Oh hey, I remember them. Trading Spaces is one show I'll take over the others, that's for sure. Love it! I'll watch While You Were Out occasionally, but I'd much rather watch Trading Spaces. Things get downright crazy on that show.

The only reality show I really follow is The Apprentice, and Donald Trump agreed to only two more installments so it'll be gone by the end of next season. Overall, there are some good reality shows, but I'd defintely exchange all the good and bad for some good scripted shows.
