View Full Version : Tick bites
Krisalicious 05-12-2004, 11:06 PM Any help on this one would be greatly appreciated. And I mean GREATLY.
Okay, so I wanted to know if any of you have ever gotten a tick bite before. And if you have, I'd like to know what exactly it looks like and any other additional information about them because well...I think I might possibly have one. Ehhhhh...
PZelda 05-12-2004, 11:24 PM I got a tick bite in '98. It was on my neck, but I've seen other people who had them.
OK, here's what happens. You don't feel a thing...But the telltale sign is, an area of your skin will be lumpy (think: moles) and there will be a thin slit on the top of that lump. That's how you know you have a tick bite. The lump will usually be red, but again you can't feel anything.
Anything else?
Oh yeah, and you can't remove it yourself. You have to have somebody help you with it. In my case, I was at summer camp and we had a nurse with us at all times, so I just had to go over to the nurses' tent and she took it out with this special tool that looks like scissors.

Okay well....it is lumpy slightly, and yes, it does look EXACTLY like a mole. In fact, I have a other moles on my leg, but they're really light and faded looking. This thing however is really, really dark black. And it is red around it, but I've been picking at it ever since I noticed it. And I think there's a slit on it, however I'm not exactly too sure...ehh. Damn it. Well thank you so much for your help, I greatly appreciate it.
Oh by the way...do you happen to know if ticks live by oh lets say...water, or maybe rainy places? Or in rainy weather. Because if it's yes, then I DEFINITELY have one.

Mine wasn't THAT red, but you do get a ring around the bite..

It'll look something like this.
AND DON'T PICK AT IT!!!!!!! DON'T!!!!!!!! The tick is still inside your skin, and doing so could cause its head to separate from its body and get stuck inside your skin when you get it removed, leading to worse things...
Kazza 05-12-2004, 11:44 PM I think TICKS and H2O get along just fine:D

Sterling Holobyte 05-13-2004, 01:07 AM Not to alarm anyone, but if it starts to look like a bullseye and you get flu-like symptoms, you might want to have it checked out as it could be Lymes disease, which ticks are known to carry. Mostly deer ticks which are smaller than the regular ones.
I was bit by a tick once behind my ear I couldn't get a real good look at it. I did see a little of the bite in a mirror and it looked like a mole. My grandpa had to get it out with tweezers.
bandito 05-13-2004, 06:58 AM See a doctor. :)
HootervilleFan 05-13-2004, 11:19 AM Another vote to get to a Doctor. Lyme Disease is VERY serious. You have to get that thing OUT if it is a tick. Hold a cotton pad with nail polish remover on it on the area. If it's a tick, it should back out of your skin. I'd save the tick itself in case they need it to test it for something.
Kazza 05-13-2004, 11:35 AM It doesn't take a rocket scientist to get that checked out
:)

Hehe..I know...It's SO easy to get one in the summer (I've had a few scares myself) and extremely dangerous to get a tick bite, which is why they tell you to dress with everything tucked in when you go out into the woods. You can never be too safe :)

Here, ticks and fleas are not very commom but shiggers (sp) are. Very annoying and itchy:rolleyes:

Yikes! I don't know how common they're up here...but I did live by the woods at one point and I loved to go into the woods to take a walk or ride my bike, because they had a bike path going through there. So peaceful. :)
Titania 05-13-2004, 04:06 PM A lot of the times you dont get a rash at all. Did you actually see the tick on you?
Lyme's really common around here- serious stuff. Only deer ticks carry it though, if it was a dog tick (larger, deer ticks are only about the size of the head of a pin) then dont be too worried. I'd get it checked out though. If you start to get joint problems, stiffness, or feel really tired, ask to be put on the meds for Lyme even if the tests come back negative- it takes 2-3 weeks after the bite for the results to be accurate- better to start meds asap
Kazza 05-13-2004, 05:59 PM Have you been to the DR yet??

Uh..obviously. I didn't make this thread to ask what I should do if I have a tick bite. Cuz yeah, obviously see a doctor. I asked what a tick bite looks like, because I wasn't sure. But anyway...
I think it was a false alarm, lol. It was probably just a cut or something that was just beginning to heal, because last night my dad took it out with these special tweezers. But I think what he took off was skin. It bled like crazy afterwards, but at least that's over and done with- I think. If I begin to have any of the symptoms, I'll definitely see a doctor. Thanks guys.
Penny Lane 05-13-2004, 08:21 PM I read somewhere that ticks are the only living creatures that seem to have no useful purpose in nature. Even mosquitoes pollenate tiny flowers but no use for ticks are known. Totally worthless creatures!
And not all ticks cause Lyme's disease. I think that deer ticks are bad but Wood ticks (which are common in Wisconsinand maybe the Upper Penninsula of Michigan)are not harmful, only gross!:D Here in the lower Penninsula of Michigan I have never seen a tick ever.
Penny Lane 05-13-2004, 08:24 PM I will stay in Michigan forever! We don't have all those weird critters here! But I will admit that we have too many mosquitoes!

Is it weird that I miss having mosquitoes? I was born in Michigan, and now live in Texas but I never minded getting mosquito bites. Ned Flanders: They are fun to scratch! Sorry I had to quote The Simpsons.
