You take the good, you take the bad, you take them both and there you have
the latest resuscitated campy schlock from ABC's "Wonderful World of Disney."
A "Facts of Life" reunion show on November 18 joins the network's stable of
retro-remakes, which already includes rehashes of "Footloose" and "Grease."
This tribute to the 1979-1988 NBC sitcom will include appearances by Mrs.
Garrett, Blair, Tootie and Natalie, but, in a stunning blow to dykes
everywhere, adolescent lesbian icon Jo won't be joining the rest of the cast.
Actress Nancy McKeon, who played the butch brat on the original show,
reportedly no longer wants to be identified with the teenage tomboy
character. The fact that she's the only cast member who has a job (she's a
series regular on Lifetime's police drama "The Division") might have
influenced her decision as well. In any event, actresses Charlotte Rae, Lisa
Whelchel, Kim Fields, and Mindy Cohn will revisit the fictional Eastlake
School for Young Women and reprise their respective roles. The plot centers
around grown-up Natalie, who needs the other girls' advice after she receives
two simultaneous marriage proposals. Natalie solves this "problem" with the
help of Tootie, who's become a Hollywood talk-show host, and Blair, who owns
a chain of hotels. Mrs. Garrett will also be there to share her wisdom with
Natalie, and God knows she probably has lots of it, now that she's older than
dirt. Filmmaker Charles Herman-Wurmfeld, whose lesbian indie film "Kissing
Jessica Stein" hits theaters in March, directed this get-together, which was
packaged by openly gay producer Laurence Mark ("As Good as It Gets").

Then why did you bring it up at all?
The article called the character an "icon" to the gay community. It never said anything about the character really being gay. Unless any of you were gay in the 80s and were looking for a character to identify with, I don't think you are in any kind of position to say wether or not a lesbian has the right to call Jo an "icon". You all need to interpret what these things say before assuming that it was an attack on your beliefs.
Shelley 10-24-2001, 10:45 AM It's not funny. I am part of the Facts of Life Yahoo Group. It's a review of the FOL Movie by Planetout, a gay website.
John 22 10-24-2001, 01:49 PM well, a lot of lesbians did connect with Jo. Yes, Nancy McKeon is straight and so was her character, but so? Right now, the series "Queer As Folk" is very big with gay men, and only 2 of the 7 main characters are gay in real life, but that doesn't stop the lesbians from looking up to Michelle Clunie (Melanie) and gay guys with the same to Gale Harold.
The Obsolete Man 10-26-2001, 02:01 AM Jo was a lesbian icon!
No biggie....
Look at it this way... Xena is a big lesbo icon, but Lucy Lawless is married, straight, and has kids.
Just because lesbian culture identifies with a character doesn't make the character or actress portraying the character a lesbian...

Well said, coily. The fact is, Jo/Nancy was and still is a lesbian icon, but that doesn't make her or her characters gay, so don't get all offended. And no, the article wasn't funny.

Cokies 10-28-2001, 11:29 PM Not surprising. I laughed at the "blow to dykes everywhere" comment. It probably is. Too bad for them. http://www.sitcomsonline.com/ubb/biggrin.gif
Obviously, Jo wasn't gay, nor is Nancy McKeon, so I don't know what there's to get up in arms about.

Impressions 09-08-2018, 11:14 AM I don't get the "big blow to dykes" comment, I know that they were trying to be funny but um, it wasn't and clearly Jo was not a lesbian in the original show...she dated men and she got married to one after all.
Also, who also thought the plot of the reunion movie was a little ridiculous? It's not that I wouldn't believe that Natalie would receive two marriage proposals, it's just that I don't know why it became the focus of an entire movie. No wonder Nancy wanted no part in it.
RetroGuy2000 09-08-2018, 12:27 PM The movie was very campy and over the top.
I still like the scene where they go to Eastland, mentioning Mr. Parker and Sue Ann, but the rest of the movie is terrible.
