Do I even need to say?

At the height of Michaelmania, I still was never quite into him as much as I got into Prince. I wanted the "Beat It" jacket, and got into the older Jackson 5 material, but that's about it. With Prince, after hearing 1999, I went back and got all his previous albums, which I hadn't owned before. I bought every magazine, every 45 rpm single, every 12 inch single, vinyl and cassette tape, every protege act, made my mom buy our first vcr because the movie Purple Rain was coming out on video. 20 years after both these guys had their commercial peak, I'm very happy I picked the guy I picked.

I think Michael Jackson is overall a better performer, and has the better material as well. I like most of his earlier work such as, Off The Wall, Thriller, Bad, and even Dangerous. The only Prince albums I like from beginning to end are 1999 and the When Doves Cry soundtrack. I do give Prince points though... he has the greater comeback. Musicology is actually good unlike Invincible.

Prince doesn't **** small children, nor has he ****ed up his face.

So yes, Prince is much less of a freak.

changing your name to an unpronouncable symbol (probably the "freakiest" thing Prince has ever done) is hardly the same thing as child molestation

So if Michael didn't have all of this child molestation problems, who would you pick? If he wasn't whiter than Marilyn Manson, and was still the chocolate color he used to be?

I'd still like Prince better.

I've always like Michael Jackson's music better than Prince's. Musically speaking, I don't think Prince achieved the superstardom of Jackson.

Prince, he's more of an artist than MJ could ever be. MJ's always been nothing more than an entertainer, Prince is that and so much more

that is true, but I think MJ and Prince have always wanted different things. MJ's been about trying to maintain his superstardom, trying to top Thriller, whereas Prince never really cared about the fairweather fans and has always done what he wanted, regardless of selling 10 million or 10,000.

Prince finally broke to the "level" (or at least close enough to it) of MJ stardom with Purple Rain in 1984... instead of resting on those laurels and trying to maintain the popularity, 9 months later he released Around The World In A Day, which sounded more like a lost 1967 Beatles recording than "Purple Rain II". I think that alone showed that Prince wasn't just going to slack because he was a star, and instead keep on challenging his listeners. In comparison, both Bad and Dangerous sounded like "ok, this is how Thriller would've sounded if it came out in 1987/1991 instead of 1982", and while there were fun moments on both albums, it did put a dent in the creativity that made Off The Wall and Thriller so successful

Don't get me wrong - weirdness aside, I enjoy Michael Jackson's catalog up through 1995 (the song "Scream" with sister Janet was his last great track). But I've always preferred Prince. Just a matter of my weird taste, I guess.

Yep. I like Jackson's old stuff but I like Prince better. Like others have said, he was more of an artist than Jackson was.

Beginning with 1983's Little Red Corvette and ending with 1994's Most Beautiful Girl In The World, Prince had a single hit the top ten on Billboard's Hot 100 each year for twelve consecutive years? Only Mariah Carey matched that feat. Not even MJ.

I remember being pissed when I Hate U stalled at #12 in 1995... putting an end to the streak.

Yes, I was definitely pissed, knowing that he had that streak going. Seeing it jump from #56 to #13, I just knew that song would hit the top ten...and it didn't. But aside from that, Prince's consistency was the thing. Even if you wanna say Prince put out mediocre albums, you had to wait 4-5 years for a MJ album that ended up mediocre, there was always some good stuff being put out by Prince.

A cinch!! Prince of course! The music died for Michael when he left the Jackson 5 to go solo apart from Thriller and Bad of course! Prince is far more true to his soul than M.

Well, this thread is old and that was said before Michael had died. Either way, still not a very nice comment.

To answer the question, I've always liked Michael's music whereas I don't even know if I can even think of a Prince song off the top of my head besides Little Red Corvette...which I don't even like. Just never got into his music, while with Michael I grew up with his music and still enjoy it.

Well, the two men are very different in their talents I always thought

Prince is very eclectic in the instrument he plays, and Michael is a superhuman dancer.

I always thought Prince was pretty arrogant. I watch Purple Rain and just go ...what?
