I haven't seen it yet but I saw a small clip of it on this weekend's Entertainment Tonight and thought it was just interesting seeing John Ritter with 2 different girls! What were your thoughts on the lost pilot, the actors(John especially)! :D

Ritter was good. The Ropers were alright. Mrs. Roper had an accent, didn't bother me. The two girls definitely weren't right for the parts, and nowhere near as attractive as DeWitt and Somers. I liked Zoe the girl who gets "touched" by Mr. Roper. I give it a C-.

I liked the pilot. It's not as good as the third pilot, but it's pretty good. It took a little getting used to at first, for me anyway.

I liked Valerie Curtin and Suzanne Zenor and I think they did a good job as Jenny and Samantha. I don't think they would've worked as Janet and Chrissy, though. I loved the sarcasm-laced comments Jenny made throughout it.

The Ropers were okay in this version. The pilot used more dialogue-based comedy, while the show used more physical comedy.

I just have to say though...the opening sucked. Especially the theme, which was hilarious. Hilariously cheesy, that is.

The pilot had a lot of funny lines, but the original girlls were not as good as Joyce & Suzanne.
Janet and Chrissy were funny, sweet, and kind of innocent in their own way. I didn't get that from Jenny & Samantha. But they did have some good lines.
John was good too, his character was not that different from Jack. Same with the Ropers. Mrs. Roper dressed a little better in the first pilot though.

I'm glad they changed John's character's background. From film school to cooking school. It makes more sense for them to ask him to be their roomate.

In this episode,The Ropers reminded me of The Bundys without children

I just finished watching the Gelbart pilot. I thought it was interesting and definitely had its own merits. I think the secret to liking it is, before sitting down to watch it, try to clear your mind of the series as it existed for eight seasons. IMO, they did the right thing for the show by recasting the two girls since they did not seem to me to have as much going for them in a comedic sense as Joyce DeWitt and Suzanne Somers. I'd give it a 7.8 on a scale of 1 to 10.

Awww Man! I accidentally erased a small segment that aired on lastnight's Entertainment Tonight Weekend edition show, where the showed some snippets of the "lost pilot" and a little bit of commentary by John Ritter who was sporting a full beard!

Does anyone know if Entertainment Tonight Weekend show repeats again? Thanks.:(

I wasn't very impressed with the pilot. Mrs. Roper was kind of mean, the girls were totally wrong for the show, & they called John "David Bell" instead of Jack Tripper. I didn't like it at all.

I agree. Mrs. Roper was harsh. She's more easy going in the Normal TC that we all know. I'm glad that they didn't stick with that.

I like it. If anything, it was a little more daring (in other words better) and funnier than the first episode (which isn't one of the stronger episodes to begin with, but good).
This will upset people here, but I really don't think it mattered who played Janet and Chrissy for the show to be successful. The only key ingredient was John Ritter. If anything, the secondary source of humor was the Ropers, who were usually on camera by themselves. I'm sure there were dozens of actresses who could have recited gags and setup lines, with enough charm to be liked by audiences. Sure, Suzanne Somers became a "self-proclaimed" star and poster girl, but that didn't make Three's Company any better. If anything, it ultimately hurt the show. All that said, I'm glad they made the choices they did. Joyce Dewitt is perfect for the fun and youthful, yet reliable character she played (allbeit secondary).

I thought it was great! It was better than the 3rd pilot if you ask me. I liked the girls as well.

I didn't like the Pilot at all. I thought the girls were fake and corny. Ritter was good though. Suzanne Somers and Joyce De Witt are much more suited for the part. The third pilot is the best!! The Ropers were different Mrs. Roper was such a bitch compared to now...i'm glad they changed the girls though i don't think it would of lasted! I hope when the 3rd season is release they show the second pilot. I beleive that is the the first time Joyce De Witt is shown.

I didn't care too much for the pilot (on the 2nd season DVD). The actresses that played the two girls were so wrong for their parts. They didn't seem right at all. I can never imagine the show going on like that, it was horrible. In fact, I was at a point to quit watching the pilot all together. Aftering watching the pilot, I'm alot more grateful that Somers and DeWitt are in the show.

P.S. - The theme song sucked! That too was horrible! Yuck!

All i can say about that pilot is that i didn't think they were serious when the theme came on, i love the three's company theme, but the one on the pilot on the second season dvd blew......i started laughing because i didn't think they were serious, not to metion, in the opening credits, the apartments they were living in looked like ****......but i'm grateful for it anyways.....:p

Well, it was different and I think it has its moments...it's funny at times but I think that the final pilot was the best of all...plus the first pilot actresses didn't have what it takes to be a good sitcom actress but that's just my opinion.

to see Our Jack as "David Bell", and you can tell he was in no way attracted to Jenny & Samantha, like he was with Janet & Chrissy! :D

Ok I admit it's tough to look at this pilot and keep from comparing it to the show we grew to love, but even judging on its own merit, I thought it was really bad.

The two girls struck me as airheads and nothing fazed them. It was like, "Oh, a guy in our tub...cool!"

When the woman wanting to be their roommate came over to see the place, instead of being put off by her strangeness, they seemed to just play along with her. It's like they didn't even notice how weird she was.

No romantic tension. They may as well have been "David's" sisters. If anything they may have been more interested in him than he was in them.

IMO, very lackluster. But it was still interesting to see, anyway!

Yeah, because of that, it didn't make sense at the end when the girls showed David the bedrooms and said 'one false move and we take you straight to the vet.'

That made so much more sense when Janet said that line in the first official ep of the show, since Jack had been flirting with them previously.

I think some of you are judging the first pilot a little too harshly. You can't fairly compare the characters Jenny & Samantha with Janet & Chrissy simply because Jenny & Samantha were only in one episode!

Sure, I love Janet & Chrissy (I am a Three's Company fan after all), but there's a bit of bias creeping in. I have 5 seasons of Chrissy to compare with one episode of Samantha, and as much as I love Chrissy, she was a bit plain in the final pilot as well. Janet we have 8 seasons to identify with, whereas Jenny's exposure, again, was only one episode. There is simply no way they could hold up, even if their performances were flawless.

Chrissy especially took several episodes to develop. Her snort, for example, which is something of a trademark for her, didn't occur until mid-Season 2. Suzanne Somers had plenty of time to develop as an actress as well as the character (the same with Joyce DeWitt with Janet) but Suzanne Zenor & Valerie Curtin did not.

I wonder how we'd feel if we were to see both pilots for the very first time without having seen anything else from Three's Company. I think we'd probably get a more balanced opinion.

Me personally, of course I prefer the final pilot, but I do think the first attempt holds up really well, considering what the show had to work with, and both actresses did a decent job. Who knows what might have been? Perhaps it might have worked, albeit in the different capacity of a racy comedy (a la All in the Family) that tried to see how far it could go without getting the censors all riled up instead of the loveable farce that it eventually came to be. It also could have bombed.

It was meant to be a show with our trio, no doubt about it, but I think the original actresses deserve more credit than what some of you are giving them.

End of soap box... :)

Anyone know if the second pilot is intended for inclusion on the Season 3 set?
