Okay, music geeks. Time to put your music geekdom to test.

In the '70s, '80s, and '90s, we had mix tapes. Now we're in the CD burner era. Has anyone created any CD-R masterpieces they're particularly proud of? Post the tracklists here!

Since I'm on a steady income with a lot of time on my hands, I'd like to share with you some of my best creations.

I've reached a new low in lameness - creating a thread about burning CD-Rs.

Anyway, proceeding with my lameness. This is a Tom Petty compilation I burned for a friend, who only had Greatest Hits. This goes a bit deeper into his catalog, including both the MCA and Warner Bros. years.

Of course, like I always do, I kept a copy for myself.

I came up with this compilation the week The Police were inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame.

Lacking creativity, though, I stole the title of the band's official compilation (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B000088NSZ/qid=1084049815/sr=2-1/ref=sr_2_1/104-1069486-4175901).

Oh God, I've made like 748832 CD's, but I dont have any on hand. Most of the ones I'd make are ones of songs I like on the radio, but am too damn cheap to buy the CD because I only like one song from the artist. However, sometimes if I DL more than one song from the artist, it makes me want to buy their CD. Like Outkast. I've liked all 3 singles so far, so now I will buy the album.

Anyways, my 3 most recent CD-R's have been Clay related. I only have one memorized at the top of my head.

Basically all I did was start from his first American Idol audition and end it with his last performance and put it in order. Whoo.

I'm currently working on downloading the medleys off American Idol so I can make a chronological order of songs on a CD or 2. I find myself making CD's with pretty much the same songs because I somehow always manage to scratch them in my car.

I'd buy this, though I'm not familiar with tracks #3, 8, 10 or 12. One World (Not Three) and Demolition Man were always favorites of mine so I'd probably include those.

I used to love making compilations (now I mostly just load everything onto the ipod.) Here's one that I did a couple years ago. I wanted an essential Madonna box set and this is what I came up with.

I still haven't completed my Stones compilation. I'm pretty much just familiar with the singles, so I figued a two-disc comp. would be perfect for me. There's a bunch of stuff not included on "Forty Licks" that I thought should be there, so I decided to put my own collection together. As I said, I haven't done it yet.

lol, I actually have made myself a "Yoko Ono's Greatest Hits" cd a few years ago, so it didn't have anything off 2001's Blueprint For A Sunrise, or her recent forays into dance music. Most of it spans Double Fantasy through 1985's Starpeace

Yoko Ono's Greatest Hits
1. Don't Worry Kyoko
2. No Bed For Beatle John
3. Midsummer New York
4. Yes I'm Your Angel
5. Beautiful Boys
6. I'm Moving On
7. Kiss Kiss Kiss

like I just posted on the 1980's thread... I've been working on my very own "80's box set" compilation to end all of them. Taking tracks from studio albums, mp3's and 80's compilations (but NEVER tracks I own on "Greatest Hits" albums by the artists... the ones I listed in here on GH cd's.... I don't have the GH albums... so for example, Prince songs like Sexuality and Mountains will be here... but NOT 1999 or Little Red Corvette)

MEGA-80's disc 1

1. Buggles - Video Killed The Radio Star. 1979 #40
granted, this song peaked in late 1979... what the song was about, and what it launched makes it very 1980's... a perfect way to start a collection. From The Age Of Plastic. Source, MP3

2. Gary Numan - Cars. 1980 #9
Gary's biggest hit from summer 1980. From The Pleasure Principal. Source, 80's compilation.

3. Devo - Whip It. 1980 #13
Devo were a cult sensation, this is their defining hour. From Freedom Of Choice. Source, 80's compilation.

4. Vapors - Turning Japanese. 1980 #36
One of the biggest one hit wonders of the decade. Not sure the album it came from. Source, 80's compilation.

5. Paul McCartney - Coming Up. 1980 #1
all of Macca's GH compilations use the live version of this song. I actually like the "Chipmunk" original version. So I decided to use this since the GH albums use the other. From McCartney II. Source, McCartney II CD.

6. Alice Cooper - Clones (We're All). 1980 #40
Alice scored his last top 40 hit for nearly a decade with this new wave turn, he sounds a lot like Jeff Lynne in this. Smashing Pumpkins remade it several years ago. From Flush The Fashion. Source, Flush The Fashion CD.

7. Air Supply - Lost In Love. 1980 #3
Air Supply's first big hit, one of their best. The GH cd I have of theirs isn't official but a bootleg self-burned one, so I went ahead and added it here. From Lost In Love

8. Christopher Cross - Sailing. 1980 #1
Christopher won a Grammy for this beautiful song. Definately the highlight of his career. From Christopher Cross. Source, Christopher Cross CD

9. Leo Sayer - More Than I Can Say. 1980 #2.
Leo had a huge hit at the end of 1980 with this song. Great early 80's soft rock. From Living In A Fantasy. Source, MP3.

10. Kenny Rogers - Lady. 1980 #1
Lionel Richie wrote this song for Kenny, spending 6 weeks at #1, this haunting ballad became one of the biggest country singles of all time. From Kenny Rogers' Greatest Hits. Source, MP3.

11. John Lennon - (Just Like) Starting Over. 1980 #1
What was to be the biggest comeback of 1980 wound up the most tragic. While this track was climbing the charts, John Lennon was gunned down. I think this song would've still been as big regardless. He showed that he was moving into the 80's yet also had some 50's into his song, and it worked great. From Double Fantasy. Source, Double Fantasy CD.

12. AC/DC - You Shook Me All Night Long. 1980 #35
While only peaking in the 30's, 1980's You Shook Me All Night Long is one of the biggest hits of AC/DC's career, a mainstay on classic rock channels. It's easy to see why, the song is irresistable. From Back In Black. Source, Back In Black

13. Journey - Any Way You Want It. 1980 #23
Journey were perhaps the biggests arena rock band of the 1980's, this being their first hit of the decade. From Departure. Source, MP3

14. Cliff Richard - We Don't Talk Anymore. 1980 #7
Released in 1979, this song actually peaked in 1980. Cliff is in a league with Elvis and the Beatles in his homeland, but in America, the hits are quite a bit fewer. This being one that was big here. A very pretty new wave song. From We Don't Talk Anymore. Source, MP3.

15. Billy Joel - Sometimes A Fantasy. 1980 #36
Always convieniently left out of Billy Joel's countless Greatest Hits collections, I feel that this song is one of his most underrated. From the catchy "oh-oh-oh-oh"'s in the chorus to the guitar hooks. How this one wasn't bigger is one of life's great mysteries. From Glass Houses. Source, Glass Houses CD

16. The Whispers - And The Beat Goes On. 1980 #18
Disco was dead, but this song still did good in the US. Unfortunately probably better known for being sampled by Will Smith, this song still lives on. Source, MP3.

17. Spinners - Working My Way Back To You/Forgive Me Girl. 1980 #2
The Spinners took a classic Four Seasons oldie and made it into a dance smash. One of their last big hits. Source, MP3.

18. S.O.S. Band - Take Your Time (Do It Right). 1980 #3
a timeless r&b/dance classic. Source, MP3.

19. Rod Stewart - Passion. 1980 #5
Rod's reputation had been shot after doing disco in the late 1970's and he wasn't caring. The lead single to the followup album was another disco record, yet more subtle and has aged better. From Foolish Behavior. Source, MP3.

20. Rolling Stones - Emotional Rescue. 1980 #3
Emotional Rescue isn't quite regarded as one of the best Stones albums, but this song is one of the few that reached a large audience. More disco-oriented than Miss You, the song went to #3 even tho disco was dying out at the time. Accompinied by a strange music video, the success of this song and it's parent album tends to be forgotten because it was in between two blockbusters, Some Girls and Tattoo You, but Emotional Rescue spent 7 weeks at #1 on the album chart itself. From Emotional Rescue. Source, Emotional Rescue CD.

AKA, I'm surprised that you didn't include "Voices Inside My Head" on your Police compilation. That's my favorite Police song. Its also been "sampled" by many rappers in recent years. Man I wish the Police would get back together and go on tour.

Your Led Zeppelin compilation is perfect. You included almost all my favorites. The only one I like that's missing is "Hey Hey What Can I Do."

Now all you need to make is a Pink Floyd compilation :)

Unfortunately, they put Eddie Van Halen in charge of the real Best Of Both Worlds compilation. I think anyone could do better than him; even a musically-inclined circus lion. ;)

Yes, it's actually a part of the back cover now, they don't even bother using stickers anymore. Tacky. The day when artists can get their music out to their fans without needing the help of record labels will be a great day.

There's only one CD I've made which I would consider a compilation. I always burn CDs with various songs, but the one CD I've made that I consider a compilation is the CD I call 1950's Swing.

1. Big Bopper- Chantilly Lace
2. Big Bopper- The Wanderer
3. Big Bopper- Bop Shee Bop Shee Bop
4. Big Bopper- Purple People Eater
5. Buddy Holly- Maybe Baby
6. Buddy Holly- Oh Boy
7. Buddy Holly- That'll Be The Day
8. Chuck Berry- Roll Over Beethoven
9. Chubby Checker- Peppermint Twist
10. Chuck Berry- Johnny B. Goode
11. Del Shannon- Run Around Sue
12. Eddie Cochrane- Come On Everybody
13. Eddie Cochrane- Jeannie
14. Eddie Cochrane- Summertime Blues
15. Jackie Wilson- Higher and Higher
16. Wilson Pickett- In The Midnight Hour
17. Jackie Wilson- Say You Will
18. Jackie Wilson- Talk That Talk
19. Jackie Wilson-That's Why (I Love You So)
20. Ritchie Valens- Come On Let's Go
21. Ritchie Valens- La Bamba

And track 22 is Twist and Shout, which was done by the Isley Brothers in 1962, but I have the track by the Beatles from the year 1964 on the CD because I like the Beatles version better.

That's ridiculous. Anytime anything obstructs cover art (front or back) it pisses me off. I hate "parental advisory" labels (if they must have them, they should put them on a sticker affixed to the jewel case), and I also hate the "COMPACT DISC DIGITAL AUDIO" logo that was on the front cover of a lot of early CDs.

Very cool lineup of songs, man. When I correct song titles, I try not to come off as a pompous ******* (and I hope I don't). That's why I usually try to make a joke and add one of these guys: ;).

Oh I know. Actually I was a little embarassed because I sorta consider myself a music buff, and you one-upped me. But I have a lot of respect for someone with well-rounded, eclectic tastes such as myself. So, yeah... ;)

A friend of mine is baffled by my love for The Beach Boys and wants to at least understand what I see in them. So I made him this disc, hoping to recruit a new fan (I figured my three-disc set would be very overwhelming to the uninitiated).

This compilation focuses on the eras between Pet Sounds ('66) and Light Album ('79), featuring only lesser-known tracks. It is not in chronological order.

I like this one. Something About You is one of my favorite songs, also the tracks from Tears For Fears, Culture Club, Matthew Wilder and Dream Academy. Ditch Night Ranger and it'd be perfect.

There's never been a good career-spanning George Harrison compilation. The Best Of Dark Horse is okay, but it's out-of-print and doesn't cover the first six years of his solo career.

The Best Of George Harrison is awful, because one whole side is Beatles songs. Those should be kept separate.

Anyway, here's my attempt:

I know "Gimme Gimme Gimme" which was on the late-1979 "Greatest Hits Vol. 2" album is out of chronological order next to the spring/summer 1979 "Voulez-Vous" album tracks, but it was needed to fill the end of the disc 1 tracks so everything would fit.

I decided to make a Linda Ronstadt personal GH cd, one that focuses on her 74-80 era, and all but ignores her late 80's Adult Contemporary garbage (I did add Somewhere Out There and Don't Know Much though because both were huge huge hits). It's a shame her great stuff is so overlooked these days because people hear the name Linda Ronstadt and think of her Aaron Neville ballad duets, when she was a great female rocker in her day.

Linda Ronstadt - The Best Of 1967-1989
1. You're No Good (from Heart Like A Wheel, 1974)
2. When Will I Be Loved (from Heart Like A Wheel, 1974)
3. Heat Wave (from Prisoner In Disguise, 1975)
4. The Tracks Of My Tears (from Prisoner In Disguise, 1975)
5. Heart Like A Wheel (from Heart Like A Wheel, 1974)
6. Love Is A Rose (from Prisoner In Disguise, 1975)
7. Different Drum (from The Stone Poneys, 1967)
8. Long Long Time (from Silk Purse, 1970)
9. Someone To Lay Down Beside Me (from Hasten Down The Wind, 1976)
10. That'll Be The Day (from Hasten Down The Wind, 1976)
11. It's So Easy (from Simple Dreams, 1977)
12. Blue Bayou (from Simple Dreams, 1977)
13. Poor Poor Pitiful Me (from Simple Dreams, 1977)
14. Back In The U.S.A. (from Living In The U.S.A., 1978)
15. Ooh Baby Baby (from Living In The U.S.A., 1978)
16. Just One Look (from Living In The U.S.A., 1978)
17. I Can't Let Go (from Mad Love, 1980)
18. How Do I Make You (from Mad Love, 1980)
19. Get Closer (from Get Closer, 1982)
20. What's New (from What's New, 1983)
21. Skylark (from Lush Life, 1984)
22. Somewhere Out There (with James Ingram) (from An American Tail: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack, 1986)

Easily the easiest disc I've ever assembled; I don't think you can even call this a compiltion, but here goes anyway. If you take all the bonus filler (bonus Apple Jam LP, 2001 bonus tracks) off of George Harrison's 1970 album, All Things Must Pass. the entire 2-LP album can easily fit on one CD (total running time of the proper album is 76:37).

That's exactly what I did, but I also compiled the bonus stuff onto its own separate disc, even adding the demo of "All Things Must Pass" from The Beatles Anthology 3 into the track lineup.

George Harrison
All Things Must Pass

1. I'd Have You Anytime
2. My Sweet Lord
3. Wah-Wah
4. Isn't It A Pity
5. What Is Life
6. If Not For You
7. Behind That Locked Door
8. Let It Down
9. Run Of The Mill
10. Beware Of Darkness
11. Apple Scruffs
12. Ballad Of Sir Frankie Crisp (Let It Roll)
13. Awaiting On You All
14. All Things Must Pass
15. I Dig Love
16. Art Of Dying
17. Isn't It A Pity (version two)
18. Hear Me Lord

George Harrison
All Things Must Pass [bonus disc]

Apple Jam:
1. Out Of The Blue
2. It's Johnny's Birthday
3. Plug Me In
4. I Remember Jeep
5. Thanks For The Pepperoni

Additional Tracks:
6. What Is Life (backing track)
7. Beware Of Darkness (demo)
8. Let It Down (demo)
9. All Things Must Pass (demo)
10. I Live For You
11. My Sweet Lord (2000)

Since I don't think I've ever posted this in this thread:

I came up with this one shortly after Nirvana was released in 2002. Unlike said official Nirvana compilation, this doesn't omit any essential tracks. It's also in chronological order.

Nirvana
Verse Chorus Verse: 1989-1994

1. School
From Bleach
2. Love Buzz
From Bleach
3. Blew
From Bleach
4. Sliver
From Incesticide
5. Dive
From Incesticide
6. Polly
From Nevermind [MFSL Edition]
7. Smells Like Teen Spirit
From Nevermind [MFSL Edition]
8. Come As You Are
From Nevermind [MFSL Edition]
9. Drain You
From "Come As You Are" single
10. Lithium (live; 10/31/91)
From Nevermind [MFSL Edition]
11. In Bloom
From Nevermind [MFSL Edition]
12. Aneurysm
From Incesticide
13. Dumb
From In Utero [MFSL Edition]
14. Heart-Shaped Box
From In Utero [MFSL Edition]
15. Rape Me
From In Utero [MFSL Edition]
16. Pennyroyal Tea (Scott Litt remix)
From Nirvana
17. All Apologies
From In Utero [MFSL Edition]
18. About A Girl
From MTV Unplugged In New York
19. The Man Who Sold The World
From MTV Unplugged In New York
20. Where Did You Sleep Last Night
From MTV Unplugged In New York
21. Sappy
From No Alternative
22. You Know You're Right
From Nirvana

I had to create my own fade ins/fade outs for the Unplugged tracks, and, for time-constraint reasons, the live version of "Drain You." The overall result, though, was good.

Aerosmith's Greatest Hits was a bad compilation to begin with. Originally released in 1980, it featured the band's biggest songs to date, but four of them ("Same Old Song And Dance," "Sweet Emotion," "Walk This Way" and "Kings And Queens") were heavily edited from their album versions. In addition, there were essential tracks missing, as well as one song present on the album that didn't belong at all.

I know vinyl has time constraints (about 40 minutes a disc), but they really should have improved the set when it was originally released on CD in the '80s, or when it was remastered in 1993.

Here's what I've come up with. I added ten songs to the original track lineup and subtracted one:

Aerosmith
Greatest Hits

1. Make It (3:40)
2. Mama Kin (4:28)
3. Dream On (4:27)
4. Train Kept A Rollin' (5:41)
5. Same Old Song And Dance (3:53)
6. Lord Of The Thighs (4:14)
7. Toys In The Attic (3:07)
8. Sweet Emotion (4:34)
9. Walk This Way (3:41)
10. Nobody's Fault (4:21)
11. Last Child* (3:54)
12. Back In The Saddle (4:40)
13. Home Tonight (3:16)
14. Draw The Line (3:24)
15. Kings And Queens (4:55)
16. Chip Away The Stone (4:01)
17. Come Together (3:46)
18. No Surprize (4:26)
19. Jailbait (4:38)

*Extended version from Pandora's Box with cold ending instead of fadeout.

Total running time - 79:17

I wanted to make a career-spanning Queen compilation, but instead of going chronological, I decided to take the tracklist of the original UK Greatest Hits album from 1981 (for the most part - goodbye, "Flash") and expand it by inserting songs from the second decade of Queen's career in-between those tracks. This is so the U.S. listener can hear '80s and '90s songs they may not be familiar with comfortably sandwiched in between the '70s hits with which they're more acquainted.

Here's the result:

*I have edited "I Need A Lover" down to a more endurable 3:45. Gone is the instrumental tomfoolery found during the long intro. The lyrics now kick in at the 0:39 point.

I'd like to make a 1975 Crosby, Stills, and Nash album from tracks from the 1975 Crosby-Nash LP Wind On the Water and Stephen Stills's solo LP from that same year, but I don't know how it would turn out.

I made a Beatles 1970 album. I think it turned out pretty well.

Side One:
1. Beware Of Darkness (Harrison)
2. That Would Be Something (McCartney)
3. Working Class Hero (Lennon)
4. What Is Life (Harrison)
5. Junk (McCartney)
6. It Don't Come Easy (Starkey)
7. Look At Me* (Lennon)

Side Two:
1. Oo You (McCartney)
2. Isolation (Lennon)
3. Every Night (McCartney)
4. Love (Lennon)
5. Art Of Dying (Harrison)
6. Maybe I'm Amazed (McCartney)
7. Remember (Lennon)

That's a good compilation! :) Not sure about ending with "Remember," as it ends with an explosion and a reference to Guy Fawkes Day, the "fifth of November."

Oh yeah, that happens to be my birthday!

Its fictitious release date is November 5, 1970. :)

If you check Mark Lewisohn's 1988 book documenting the Beatles's recording sesions, "Let It Be," the single, was released on Friday, March 6, 1970. When any given day of March falls on a specific day of the week, the correpsonding date in November falls on the same day of the week. So November 6, 1970, was also a Friday, making the day before a Thursday, and records were isued in the U.K. on Fridays then. But Parlophone did make an exception for Sgt. Pepper (released Thursday, June 1, 1967), didn't they? ;)
