While watching my Dick Van Dyke Show DVDs, I came across the old N@N commercials about "preserving our television heritage".

And it got me to thinking -- a lot of the shows N@N once aired and is currently airing REALLY are part of our heritage.


Its like taking history in school.
You should be taught just as much as the Vietnam War as World War II....

and people should have the same oppurtunity to watch Cheers just as much as I Love Lucy

You make a very good point there.... I'd be complaining more about N@N if we didn't have TV Land, but since we have TVL I think it's okay for N@N to move into more modern sitcoms

Nick at Nite used to have a whole bunch of commericals called "Our Television Heritage." I remember one of them was Amnesia. Superman had it .. so did Flipper.

I have a few on tape from the 1995 N@N anniversary special. They had a half hour special of the best of their commercials. The commercials N@N air today are nothing compared to what they used to be. Although their commercial for Clifford and Heathcliff for The Cosby Show was funny. I also enjoyed their "Be Glad Your Not Helen" commerical for Wings. But maybe that's just because I love that show.

You know something . . . come to think about it. Since everyone is fine and dandy with modern tv classics on TV Land, then why not have all of them air on TV Land [since people have been saying it's a 24 hour network]! In the mean time, keep the much older classics on TV Land but have Nick at Nite soley for them (remember, three decades versus only one)! With that said, this is what I think would make a perfect schedule:

I do not understand you at all. Does anybody else? Why mix new classics with SOME of the old ones on TV Land and then have all old ones on N@N. This is LucyFan's personal agenda. TV Land showing two modern classics at 12midnight and 1am hardly constitutes a network takeover. TV Land is still mostly old classics. But as time passes, I know LucyFan hates this, TV Land will have to show shows from the 80s and eventually, yes, even from the 90s. It is called time progression. It also comes down to people liking the newer shows better than the really old stuff form the 50s and 60s. More people would rather watch Cheers than Green Acres or Bewitched.

And I notice that all the modern TV classics on TV Land get the very worst time slots and the old classics get all the best...

That is the problem, "at one point in time." Networks are going to change overtime. You hold networks to ridiculously high standards.

The best thing NAN/TVL can do, imo, is only have 1982-1987 Cheers on TVLand and 1987-1993 Cheers on NAN.

That way, we won't be seeing the same exact episodes on the two channels, and the older half of the series is on TVLand and the more modern half is on NAN. But it wouldn't be on four times a day on either, since none of them would be showing all 275 episodes...

Good thinking. It is kind of bad when you can see one episode on N@N one night and in a few nights see the exact same one on TV Land. I like having Cheers on both, but I can see why people would be mad over that. And I will be too when they get back to the Diane years because I like the Rebecca years a lot better.

The idea was to transform Nick at Nite back to its old self and to establish a network for ONLY shows from 1950's to 1970's while transforming TV Land to a five decade network since it has more airtime. It makes perfect sense.

Not really. As FamilyTiesGOP said, time marches on. Shows from the '70s and '80s are looked back at with as much nostalgia as shows from the '50s and '60s were when Nick At Nite started.

exactly, I understand LucyFan's stand, but she needs to realize that shows like Cosby and Cheers are as old NOW as Mary Tyler Moore and Happy Days were when they went on Nick

I totally agree with you. Look at it this way - N@N started in 1985. In July of next year (if I recall hearing, that's when it started), it'll have been 20 years ago it debuted. TWENTY YEARS AGO. TWO DECADES AGO. Times DO change in 20 years. It was the thing back then for N@N to air shows from the 50's/60's, and with the introduction of TV Land in 1996 (am I right on its debut year?), it had even more room to air old stuff. Times have changed. Now it's cool for them to air TV shows made 15-22 years ago...God, LF, you really need to chill. You're really acting like you have 24/7 PMS.

LucyFan.... all you do is complain and then make schedules. WE GET IT THAT YOU ARE NOT HAPPY

Personally, I don't think TV Land is at its strongest schedule right now (but that's only because of show preferences, not the types of shows they're showing).... but TV Land changes all the time. It is by no means abandoning the older shows - Addams Family is coming in June and airing two times in a row in primetime surrounded by Green Acres and Andy Griffith.

I miss how N@N used to be but I understand why they have moved into the 80s and 90s.... The rerun field will not always just be 50s-70s, you have to GIVE IT UP... it's not gonna change and there will always be a place for reruns from the 50s-70s as well as reruns from 80s on
